Our Contributor, Cris Peixoto, wrote about a different type of experience in the City! Skip the shopping and come try Flower School NY! Experience flower arranging classes in NYC.
People visit New York for many reasons: the amazing museums, awarded Broadway plays or the incredible variety of restaurants. We have one more to add to this extensive list: Flower School NY.
Located in the trendy Chelsea neighborhood, the school is a place to explore your flower arrangement design skills. You might also want start a new profession or just spend some time relaxing and getting creative.
Eileen Johnson, the Founder, decided to open the school after realizing that there wasn’t anything similar in the city: “I always wanted to have my own business and I love to entertain. I had thought of having a cooking school, but there were already so many…”.
So, she saw an article in the NY Times about a flower arrangement program in Paris and was intrigued. The experience was really enjoyable and when she came back to NY she decided to start the Flower School wanting “to highlight the artists who are in New York”.
Moreover, the program is really extensive, with classes for all levels, available year-round. You don’t need any previous experience to join. The professional program lasts 8 weeks with a month-long internship in a real flower shop.
In the Spring, the Flower School NY offers a trip to Holland where students can experience the unique flower auction in Aalsmeer, visit local florists and attend workshops with some local masters.
The trip is opened to anyone interested. Plus, it’s an opportunity to learn the behind the scenes of the flower industry.
Speaking of masters, Eileen brings the most renowned ones to give workshops throughout the year. Names like: Christian Tortu, Oscar Mora, Olivier Giugni, Shane Connoly – Prince Charles’ personal florist, just to name a few. Each one with his or her own technique and style.
“Like great chefs we are highlighting the art and artistry of great florists”, says Eileen.
I have, myself, attended the professional program. Besides the professionalism from the instructors and the staff, the classes were just delightful and therapeutic.
Eileen has big plans. Next is the Perfume School of NY for people who want to learn the art of perfume making with some of the best perfumers of the world.
“There’s a resurgence of interest in artisanal perfuming and we are interested in being part of it.”
On your next trip to New York City, put aside the shopping and try the Flower School and their flower arranging classes in NYC!
In addition, you enjoy this type of activity, you might want to try the community-driven classes at Brooklyn Brainery and a unique Korean cooking class in a gorgeous kitchen in Manhattan.
Lastly, for corporate activities, let your experts organize a fantastic experience for your and your team.
