Motorino Pizzeria: An Authentic Taste Of Naples Outside Italy

Motorino offers a large variety of delicious pizzas on its menu, besides other dishes aside from pizza. Clams, meatballs, salads… When I went there I wanted try the Napoletana pizza style. Like that proverb says: “When in Rome do as the Romans do”.

I love pizza! I suppose you do too. The Upper West Side is one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city and I truly enjoy to hang out there.

One day, after running some errands I got really hungry. I decided to look for a cool spot to have a nice meal. That was when I saw a place with a small line outside that intrigued me. I looked inside and it was small, but it was also cozy and inviting. “I’m gonna have pizza for lunch today”, I thought to myself.

As soon as I walked inside Motorino I was greeted. The décor was simple with some frames on the wall, marble tables, steel chairs. Pretty simple, yet comfortable.

A highlight was the brick-oven. Brick-oven pizzas are the best, in my opinion, and at Motorino all doughs are baked in house. I noticed the guests were really diverse. Some were alone, other in couples, while some had children. It’s definitely a family-friendly place.

The venue offers a large variety of delicious pizzas, but you can find other dishes besides pizza, as well. Clams, meatballs, salads… I was craving to try their Napoletana pizza style. As the proverb says: “When in Rome do as the Romans do”. In this case, we’d switch Rome for Naples…

After a while trying to pick the best option to kill my hunger, I ordered a traditional Margherita.

It’s made with both Pecorino and Mozzarella cheeses. The crust was terrific and the sauce very tasty and balanced. It was cut into 4 regular slices. So, depending on how hungry you are you could eat it alone or share with a friend.

I was able to eat 3 slices that day and I took the leftover home, of course. It was delicious! I didn’t have alcohol, but they have a decent selection of beers and wine to pair. I knew it wouldn’t be long until I’d come back …and I did.

A month later I returned with my roommate. This time I ordered the Soppressata Piccante. Soppressata is an Italian dry salami and it’s picante (aka spicy) because the pizza comes with chili flakes on it. I was really anxious to check how that combination would come out. Result: I loved it! I shared it with my roomie that loved it too.

The Napoletana style pizza was approved! Yum! To finish the meal in style, we ordered Tiramisu for desert. Fantastic! I love Italian food in general and Motorino really knows how to prepare them.

If you don’t live close enough to the Upper West Side or that neighborhood is simply not your cup of tea, Motorino has 2 more locations across town – a 2nd in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn.

So, if you’re craving great, traditional Italian pizza, give it a shot and share with us what you chose from the menu. For other great pizza spots in New York you might also want to try Roberta’s in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
