Andre Vasconcelos: NYC’s Top Shelf Guitarist And His Studio Ghidrah Music

Curiosities Insider Interviews Andre Vasconcelos Ghidrah Music Studio Pronoun

We’re excited to share another exclusive interview with Andre Vasconcelos. He’s one of NYC’s top shelf guitarist and now founded his studio Ghidrah Music. His journey is brilliant and his skills in working both roles, are undeniably amazing.

Back in June of 2017, we featured an exclusive interview with the guitarist Andre Vasconcelos, where we talked about how we was shaking up New York with his music. Today, we’re going to talk about his thriving studio Ghidrah Music.

The word, love and appreciation for his talent and skills have spread through out New York, and certainly to other parts of the globe.

Since then, we’ve been to countless shows where he’s performed with his own band, RANN, and we’ve followed his steps when performing beside other great musicians.

It’s been an amazing journey to see Andre thrive from (still) being one of New York City’s top shelf guitarists to now additionally starting his new business, a music studio: Ghidrah Music.

Check out the inspiring interview below and learn more about Ghidrah Music:

1. After our 1st interview a while back, so much has happened, and we’re curious to have an update on what you’ve been up to in NYC.

I’m glad to be back here on this amazing platform of yours Fernanda! I meet lots of people on a regular basis and your platform has made a big name for itself. People constant refer to it and one can easily spot the success it’s been garnering! I’m happy for you both on a professional and on a personal level! Congrats!

Life has been very busy, challenging and productive on the creative world for me. Me and the RANN boys instituted a plan for 2020 “A Song a Month” and we’ve been at it since last December really. With 6 songs out now, a 7th to come on June 26th and a lot of added Spotify traction (we got placed in 2 editorial playlists and increased our fanbase to everywhere in the world, places like Stockholm, Lithuania, Korea are jamming to RANN now!) we’re happy to have made that plan as it proves itself quite the fun challenge. We’re excited to feed both our old and new fans more music every month!

I’ve also been performing a lot as a sideman with some really cool pop artists. Last year I was invited to perform at Zara Larrson’s (Massive Europop star) intimate set at Billboard and Buzzfeed, toured North America with EZI (opening for Top 40 artists MAX, Bryce Vine and Nina Nesbitt), played a bunch of festival dates in both the US and Europe and was supposed to be going on another North America run with Kat Cunning and Allie X before the whole world got shutdown over COVID. So life’s busy and chaotic as usual over here in my camp.

A lot of what I’ve been doing lately as well is more on the songwriting side of the art as well.

Me and my music house-mates of Ghidrah Music, are writing tons and tons of music for/with a bunch of different artists all over the world like Loren Allred, Marcus Paul James, Marta Galuszewska, Maria Mathea, Tom Martin, Cathy Richardson (from Jefferson Starship) and many more.

We’ve written theme songs for TV shows, movies, trailers, video games and many many more.

2. So, what is Ghidrah Music? What type of services are you offering and lastly, how are you guys distancing ourselves from others in the same industry?

Ghidrah Music is the production outfit of RANN. Composed by the same team as the indie rock band, Ghidrah is a Studio Team that meets over at the wonderful production room that we have at Studio G, in Williamsburg.

Our work is mostly dedicated to writing music and placing songs via sync licensing. We are partnered up with vocalists and writers from everywhere on the planet that are interested in doing the same thing. We write these songs, produce, mix and master them, then we send them out to the various pipelines. Finally, we have in the hopes to sell these licenses to tv shows, movies, video games and such.

Some songs that made their way into big productions are RANN’s “Childish Ways” that was featured in the mega movie “Tudo por um Pop Star” in Brasil and “Cellophane” also placed in a Brazilian blockbuster movie named “Entrando Numa Roubada”.

Other examples are MR VVOLF’s “Never Look Back” that got placed on the movie “All For Nikki” and a parody song we did in for Axe’s North American Campaign “Don’t Overthink It”.

We are currently working with at least 20 different artists trying to diversify and populate our song catalog for placement and we are truly excited about it.

As far as social distancing and pandemic rules go, our Studio got shut down when the Governor gave the order. We split our gear into 3, creating individual “home stations” for each of us and we tackled the work that could be done from home.

It was a challenging time but we adapted correctly and we made the best we could with what we had. This is truly a historic and defining time in all our lives and the main choice here is to not lose focus of what’s important, our health. Being responsible and considerate is paramount. So for now, we’re minimizing our in person sessions very close to 0%. And, we’ll loosen the grip on that restriction as the weeks of successful reopening go by.

3. How was this transition from being on stage, to going behind the scenes and starting Ghidrah Music?

Honestly, you can hardly say it’s been a transition. This is just the natural growth of both paths of my life that were always present. I’ve been on the road and on stage for a long time, but those activities typically happen later during the day.

The production and writing stuff is often occurring during morning of weekdays so, between these two roles you can imagine my schedule gets pretty hectic. A good example of how this works can be be illustrated by last December.

In the morning the Ghidrah boys and I finalized an instrumental cue that we sold the publishing off to NBC, for the show “Making It” with Nick Offerman and Amy Poehler. Right after that I had to get to a rehearsal, so I left the studio, did the rehearsal and made my way to the Bowery Ballroom, where we played a sold-out show with Pop Star songstress Kat Cunning.

Typically my days work like that, mornings and early evenings for Ghidrah, the rest of the evening and nights for side man or RANN live performances.

4. I’ve seen that in a super short time, you’ve worked with major brands in Brazil and other corners of the globe. Can you share a bit about some of these great projects?

Having discovered that what we truly wanted to do was also our strongest asset was incredibly lucky and fortunate.

We are a group of originally 3 producers. Our company was even called 3P, for 3 Productions. We did the entire debut record by the Brazilian artist Rachell Luz under that alias. We eventually decided to change the name to Ghidrah Music, to honor our ridiculous tendencies. With the name change also came a change of focus, we wanted to use our time and our talents to write music together instead of working as producers for artists. We still do that, but it isn’t the main focus of the company anymore.

What started happening was, the people that knew us as producers and now as songwriters started using us to write songs for their business campaigns. Sometimes it would be a big advertisement campaign, such as the Claro “Novo” campaign we did last year for South America’s biggest phone and internet company.

Sometimes it’d be for an intro for a podcast, or for Call of Duty professional e-sports team Twitter teaser trailer. The point being is that we took our one stop approach for audio solutions from before and we added something even more rare and hard to come across: the ability to write good songs.

That expanded the horizon for us and let us work with a ton of different companies and entities everywhere in the world.

5. A question, maybe hard to answer at this time, but with the global situation of Covid-19, have you been able to identify any new trend or opportunities in the music industry? How severely did the Pandemic affect the industry?

The pandemic has been extremely harsh to the music industry. With shows and events cancelled for the foreseeable future, a lot of my music professional peers are suffering greatly.

I know so many people that have been living exclusively on the road, whether they are side man like me, or road crew, lighting tech, tour managers, day-to-day managers, FoH engineers, etc. Every single one of these guys have had their futures cancelled for an undetermined amount of time. And, that is a very scary thought.

Hopefully the world will arrive at a solution for this horrible virus problem and we’ll be able to return to some form of normalcy soon. Personally, I’ve lost so many concerts, rehearsals and recordings, frankly too many to count.

From a main stage festival slot at Central Park to two mini tours in Mexico and Japan, to a RANN + Jefferson Starship throw down at the Westhampton Theatre, the losses are actually incalculable.

But, what isn’t is the fact that I am alive, well and healthy. We can always regain opportunities and earn back money lost, but we can’t always recover people from the damage caused by this brutal virus.

6. Do you have any upcoming projects that you can share with us? We’d love a sneak peek!

Too many upcoming projects!

We’re working on a songwriting competition with the awesome Marcus Paul James, that’ll be happening on Friday. We wrote a song together for it and we’re super excited to support our amazing friend belting his beautiful voice in favor of positive change.

We are also expecting to receive Cathy Richardson’s vocals on a song we wrote for a big feature film to be produced in Los Angeles once production re-opens.

And, last but not least, RANN is releasing our newest and most exciting song to date named “When I’m Lucky”. We are so thrilled to share the song with the world, we did an amazing quarantine collaboration video with Brad Wagner and it’ll reach all streaming platforms and Youtube on June 26th, so stay tuned for it!

Thank you, Andre, for this amazing and inspiring interview.

It’s been an amazing journey to see you thrive from (still) being one of New York City’s top shelf guitarists to now additionally starting your new business venture, your studio Ghidrah Music! It’s truly inspirational and amazing to see all you’ve achieved.

No doubt your career in New York City, and across the globe, only continues to skyrocket!

Good luck and keep up posted!

Fun Things To Do In NYC This Fall

Curiosities Our Bucket Lists Fun Things To Do In NYC This Fall Central Park The Lake

New York, New York is a fabled city of dreams. Considered the epicenter of American multiculturalism, New York City brings together the best of tourism, scenery, and choice. Today we will share with you some pretty fun things to do in NYC this Fall!

Unfortunately, since New York City has taken a considerable hit since COVID-19 infiltrated its borders, most of its iconic spots and activities have been suspended through the summer. However, it’s still possible to plan a fall trip for this year that blends the timelessness of tourist spots with the eclectic spirit of its hidden gems. We’re gonna show you some fun things to do in NYC this Fall!

Formerly known as New Amsterdam, the city we now know as New York was initially settled on the Hudson River by the Dutch in 1624. Forty years later, the English took over and gave the city the name we know and love today: New York.

It is perhaps most famously known as the “gateway to America,” as the city saw a massive influx of immigrants between 1892 and 1954.

Because of this fact, it’s estimated that up to 40% of Americans can trace their lineage back to this group of immigrants who entered the country via Ellis Island, which could arguably be America’s most famous border stop.

New York’s rich cultural history has cemented its status as one of America’s must-see cities.

But for those unfamiliar with its geographical and social landscape, it might be overwhelming to dive in and navigate.

Fortunately, we’re here today to provide you with a list of sites you’ll visit during your time in ‘The Big Apple.’

These might look like pretty touristy spots to go, far from a “behind the scenes” experience at first glance, but we always tweak the experience into a memorable and unique one!

So, keep on reading and check out a few fun things to do in NYC this fall, with our “behind the scenes NYC juice” to top it off:

Taking Broadway to another level with a Meet & Greet experience!

There’s no business, like show business, baby!

Any American who can carry a tune has heard of Broadway; its world-class theater productions draw millions of international visitors each year.

Many of its iconic shows and songs have woven their way into the cultural fabric and lexicon. Broadway itself is the name of the street where most of those theater companies made their home in the early 1900’s, a time when the height of the Industrial Revolution ushered in massive public transportation shifts.

New York’s new subway system made getting around the city far easier, and with it came the popularization of live theater entertainment.

Nowadays, Broadway’s definition has expanded to include all streets between 42nd Street and 53rd Street in Midtown and is appropriately named the Theater District.

While there was a downturn in demand for theater productions during the Great Depression, Broadway would soon rise again.

There’s several acclaimed Broadway shows in production this fall, and anyone who wants to get an authentic taste of the city would be wise to buy a ticket to see one of these shows.

If you’re new to the theater world, consider The Lion King.

Not only is the story familiar thanks to Disney’s hit 1994 animated film, but it’s also the highest-grossing Broadway show of all time, raking in over $2 million every week.

That’s $1.4 billion in total since the beginning of its run! If you’re looking for a brief account of American history with a modern-day twist, then we recommend Hamilton, one of the most popular shows to hit Broadway in years.

If you’d like to see this show but aren’t too keen on shelling out $150 for a ticket, you can enter a digital lottery to win one for $10.

Now, for our “behind the scenes NYC juice”! Watching a Broadway show is definitely an amazing experience, but we can make it priceless with a pre-dinner with the stars and a backstage meet & greet after the show!

How about that for a memorable experience, huh?! Definitely one of the highlights of fun thing to do in NYC next Fall!

Central Park and all its secrets!

Curiosities Our Bucket Lists Fun Things To Do In NYC This Fall Central Park Walking Tour
Photo Credit: ©Behind the Scenes NYC

If New York is America’s most famous city, then Central Park is America’s most famous park.

The New York State Legislature set aside 750 acres of central land on Manhattan Island for park development on July 21, 1853. Central Park would become America’s first and largest public park and kicked off the urban park movement that would continue to spread throughout the country in the coming decades.

Those lobbying for the construction of the park argued that a big public park would contribute to the collective benefit of both society and public health. Their reasoning struck a chord, as nowadays America boasts over 53 national parks and 6600 state parks. Smaller public parks are estimated to double or triple the last number.

If you think all there is to do in Central Park is walk around, think again. You can fish for bass, explore Belvedere Castle, take in the floral scenery at the Conservatory Garden, and catch some Shakespearean theater if you’re so inclined.

What makes Central Park so amazing is that there’s something for everyone here.

Want to spread a blanket out on the Big Lawn and bask in the sun? You can do that–just don’t forget your prescription sunglasses (it gets pretty bright out there!).

Would you rather experience all the romance of a gondola ride without making a trip to Venice, Italy? Well, you can do that too on Central Park’s lake. If you’re new to the city, you have to make your way to America’s most beautiful and most memorable park before you go.

And still, let us organize a beautiful full picnic for you and your friend’s or loved ones! We’ll take care of everything from setting it up, to cleaning it all, when you’re done! It’s one of the fun outdoor activities you never thought about doing in New York.

Last, but not least, you can also sign up and experience the Secret of Central Park Walking Tour! So fun and you’ll learn even more, and explore a couple more off-the-beaten-path areas.

The Secret NYC Underground!

Perhaps, though, these tourist destinations aren’t your cup of tea – even though we added our unique twist. So here are some secret and fun things to do in NYC this Fall.

If this is the case, rest assured you’re in the right place to explore and discover a trove of establishments that generally fly under the radar.

New York City is teeming with cocktail bars and live music hubs that can give you a taste of the undercurrent of the city’s culture.

Peachy’s Cocktail Bar has an impressive set of house rules that accosts every visitor before entry: NO FIGHTING, NO PHOTOS. Indeed, in today’s picture-perfect world, a bar like Peachy’s is an excellent place to relax with a drink and unplug. Located at 5 Doyers Street in Chinatown, this chic speakeasy-like lounge is under Chinese Tuxedo – a restaurant we love!!

But the phone-free element is not the only part of its unique vibe. Peachy’s cocktail bar dons some seriously fresh tiger-print wallpaper, intricate floral arrangements, and myriad flickering candles that all work together to create a funky yet beautifully understated mood.

Its most famous drink comes with complementary blue algae, but don’t worry. Not only are these algae safe for consumption, but it’s flavored with pineapple to conjure up childhood memories of blue Fun Dip. Talk about a sweet spot!

Are you looking for a laugh? Then, check out Live @ The Apt.

What began as a three-person venture out of a 5th floor apartment has evolved into a comedy club with multiple locations across the city. Known as one of the hottest modern comedy clubs, Live @ The Apt has featured some of today’s most prominent, up-and-coming comedians, including Hannibal Buress, Hasan Minhaj, and Phoebe Robinson.

Live @ The Apt also partners with Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels’ Above Average Network to bring you the best on comedy production. They’ve also expanded their shows to national tours and branded content campaigns.

You won’t be disappointed if you make a trip to Live at The Apt. Just remember to bring your funny bone with you.

The list of things to do in NYC this Fall doesn’t stop here. But, we’d be here all day if we wanted to dig into all the uniquely incredible activities you could do in New York City.

However, know that it’s always good to keep your street smarts about you while you’re navigating the city.

We also have some travel recommendations for out-of-towners, and you can see the 16 Things NO ONE EVER Tells You About NYC.

Some additional tips include:

  • never getting into an unmarked cab (all yellow NYC cabs feature their driver’s medallion number on their taxi light),
  • sticking to well-lit, populated streets,
  • offering to panhandlers valuables like subway cards or food instead of money,
  • and keeping your wallet on you and within reach at all times (gotta watch out for those pickpockets).

So, we hope you’ve learned a little bit about our beautiful city today. We hope that you’ll get the chance to see it for yourself someday.

BACKSTORY:

About producer Rebecca Fay Walsh, aka Faymous, and her inspiration for creating alternative theatrical platforms and is “exposing Opera to a new audience and preserving this unique art form for years to come.”

“FAYMOUS was founded by Rebecca Fay Walsh, an Opera singer in New York City. “Fay,” a rising star in the Opera world, had been recognized many times by the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions for her soprano voice.

In addition, when she arrived in New York City to pursue her career on stage, she was equipped with another tool beyond her voice; a recently purchased a DSLR Canon camera. Thanks to the ease and intuitive nature of the Canon cameras, Fay became a highly sought after portrait photographer in a matter of months, pulling her career trajectory in an unexpected direction.

Also, her talents garnered the attention of Emerald Gruin, the gallery director of the ROX Gallery on the lower east side where she was offered an artist residency.

During this time, Fay documented many of the greatest stars in the Opera world, not limited to Diana Damrau, Isabel Leonard, Ailyn Perez, Jamie Barton, Matthew Polenzani, and Sing for Hope founders, Monica Yunus & Camille Zamora.

Moreover, Emerald encouraged Fay to deepen her relationships with these exceptional artists by offering the gallery as a recital platform. Fay’s concept was to expose a new audience to these artist’s voices in a pure and exposed manner juxtaposed against the backdrop of a notoriously edgy contemporary art gallery.

After an Opera showcase, Opéra ROX, featuring Isabel Leonard and other stars of the Metropolitan Opera, FAYMOUS was born.

Lastly, FAYMOUS continues to maintain the spirit of this first performance, promoting classical singers and Opera by creating alternative platforms in New York. In building these platforms, Fay hopes to foster a new generation of Opera lovers, preserving this unique art form for years to come.”

ALL NEW YORK’S A STAGE: Celebrating NYC’s Small Theater Industry

Entertainment Culture All New Yorks A Stage Kiss Me Kate

ALL NEW YORK’S A STAGE – the First Campaign Celebrating NYC’s Small Theater Industry! New Yorkers invited to experience 200+ performances and events throughout the five boroughs.

Entertainment Culture All New Yorks A Stage Kiss Me Kate

We loved learning about the ALL NEW YORK’S A STAGE campaign to celebrate NYC’s small theater industry and this is totally up our alley!!! See what it’s all about and how you can get tickets to this huge list of performances and events around town!

The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, in partnership with SHOW-SCORE.COM, announced the launch of ALL NEW YORK’S A STAGE, the first-ever campaign dedicated to raising the visibility of our vibrant local theater industry, which is made up of small venues, companies and related organizations throughout the five boroughs.

Up through October 31st, New Yorkers and visitors can explore the ALL NEW YORK’S A STAGE website to discover an exciting array of more than 200 performances and events throughout the city.

ALL NEW YORK’S A STAGE offers New Yorkers an opportunity to learn about musicals and dramas, adaptations of classics, immersive and site-specific performances; staged readings, previews and special promotions –that may be right around the corner from where they live or work.

The site also offers reviews and recommendations from other theatergoers, as well as those by professional theatre reviewers.

“ALL NEW YORK’S A STAGE is the first citywide campaign to focus on connecting audiences to the amazing work of our small theaters, which are integral to the city’s creative culture, and where established and up-and-coming talent does some of their most creative work,” said Anne del Castillo, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment.

“We hope that this campaign serves as a starting point for New Yorkers and visitors alike to explore local theater all year long!”

You can see the campaign will be featured on New York City subways and bus shelters, with dedicated print and digital ads in local publications; while theaters citywide will use the hashtag #localtheaternyc on their social media throughout the month of October.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be partnering with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment on this important initiative,” said Show-Score CEO Deeksha Gaur.

“We created Show-Score four years ago to help audiences discover great theater, particularly beyond Broadway. That is where New Yorkers can experience – in the intimacy of a small venue and at an affordable price – some of the most exciting talent and ground-breaking work the city has to offer. In fact, the Tony winners for Best Musical for the last five years all performed Off-Broadway before making the move uptown.”

“The most ambitious, innovative and adventurous work isn’t just made inside the Broadway Box, it’s created in all 5 boroughs by hundreds of independent artists who are ready for the kind of exposure this campaign can bring,” said Aimee Todoroff, Acting Director of the League of Independent Theater.

“Congratulations to the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment for recognizing that, from traditional theaters to rooftops, and in site specific and found spaces, audiences are hungry for the diverse work made in Independent theaters all across NYC.”

If off-Broadway show is totally up your alley and you love exploring independent theaters, then you might also enjoy going to STOMP! Plus, take a look at Cherry Lane Theatre, the longest continuously Off-Broadway theatre in New York City!

You’ve never heard of the Annual New York Burlesque Festival? Well, it’s about time!

This is a 4 night, 5 event festival of burlesque, boylesque and variety. It will take place in New York City on September 26th through the 29th.

They are celebrating their 17th year of glitter and glamour in Gotham. So, we’re here to help spread the love for their art and work!

We’re excited with the entire festival, but specially the Saturday Spectacular at Sony Hall on Saturday, September 28th. In addition their is also the Sunday Burlesque Bazaar – a mini shopping mall full of glamorous goodies!

Get tickets here!

“4 Days & Nights of Glitter and Glamour in Gotham with burlesque, live music, vending, classes and more.
Put on your top hat n tails for the Saturday Spectacular at Sony Hall, below The Paramount Hotel on 46th Street. This magical night is hosted by the king of comedy Murray Hill and showcases only the finest Burlesque performers from around the globe in a 1920’s supper club atmosphere. This is truly a luscious night, not to be missed!”

So, you can’t attend the festival but you enjoy burlesque art?

There are a few on going performances that happen in New York that you can also enjoy and that we really recommend going.

Company XIV, created by the Juilliard graduate Austin McCormick, they mix everything from dance, theater, circus, opera and burlesque, to a decadent design to create a one of a kind theatrical experience.  Their work has a huge inspiration on the reign of Louis XIV, but with a contemporary twist.

Dances of Vice is another priceless experience! I was going to try and explain it in my own words, but they just put it so beautifully. I decided to get an excerpt from them:

Dances of Vice is a fetishistic New York nightlife sensation specializing in highly stylized themed entertainment and fantasy clubbing experiences. Dances of Vice attracts a decadent menagerie of creative mavericks and sensual sophisticates who gather in mutual devotion to beauty and shared defiance of social convention to celebrate the liberating effects of fantasy and surrealism.”

These immersive theatrical experiences and burlesque shows are always breathtaking and unpredictable. So, I’m sure you’ll have an unforgettable experience!

Learning Some Beats With STOMP

Entertainment Culture Music Learning Some Beats With Stomp NYC

If you haven’t heard about Stomp, it’s about time! Founded in the UK, back in 1991, today they are world famous, creating the most impressive percussion acts with unexpected objects and body parts! Get ready to feel your bones shake!

I absolutely L-O-V-E Stomp!

If you haven’t heard about them, they are an Off Broadway show, that was founded in the Brighton, United Kingdom in 1991 by Steve McNicholas and Luke Cresswell. Today they are world famous and attract audiences that come from all over the globe.

Their show takes place in a great spot in the trendy East Village and are always super full, when not, totally sold out!

In short, they are “a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy”. And, their comedy acts are truly hilarious!

The most amazing thing is that there is absolutely no dialogue throughout the entire show, but these guys are experts in getting you crackin’ in your seat!

They literally create some of the most astounding and impressive percussion acts, using countless unexpected objects and body parts.

“Matchboxes, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters and more fill the stage with energizing beats at STOMP, the inventive and invigorating stage show that’s dance, music and theatrical performance blended together in one electrifying rhythm.”

We spoke to, and learned some beats with 3 of their NYC performers: Desmond Howard, Jasmine Joyner and Simeon Weedall.

Plus, I couldn’t forget to thank our dear friend, Marivaldo dos Santos, that was the one that set this video shooting up for us! Marivaldo is also part of the super talented NYC performers, since the early days, when it all started! You guys HAVE to see him in action!

So, before you watch, be sure to subscribe to our channel, turn on the notifications and come explore New York with me!

Day 1: Siemens NYC’s Hidden Technology – A Behind the Scenes Tour

Curiosities City Secrets Siemens BTSNYC Tour Carnegie Hall Fernanda Paronetto

We had two priceless days with Siemens USA. We visited some of New York City’s major attractions to understand how Siemens actually helped build the city! So, tag along with me to see what “Siemens NYC’s Hidden Technology – A Behind the Scenes Tour” was all about!

Curiosities City Secrets Siemens BTSNYC Tour

It’s even hard to start writing about the amazing 2-day experience I had with Siemens a few weeks ago on their “Siemens NYC’s Hidden Technology – A Behind the Scenes Tour“.

A couple of weeks back I was invited to participate in a priceless experience they had put together. I was immediately exited and curious, especially considering the name they chose for the project, ha!

We have millions of people visiting New York City during the year, over 60million to be more exact. Actually, in 2017 the number surpassed 62 million curious travelers and it keeps growing.

Most of you know about my indescribable passion for New York that I’ve clearly spoken about thousands of times before. And, the more I live here, the more I see the infinite stories and historical facts that together have built this tireless and sleepless city.

What people – not only travelers but also locals – don’t actually stop to think about, is “what is the real power that makes this perfect engine function throughout the city?” And, in obvious ways, enhances our experiences through the world-famous landmarks and historical attractions that symbolize the Big Apple.

Siemens’ technology is literally scattered everywhere you can possibly think about. From the Statue of Liberty, the subway system, the Amtrak and the respected World Trade Center Memorial Fountains, to the ceilings at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the acoustics of Carnegie Hall and even, hidden within the top breweries that make your days eternally memorable experiences.

After all, in a digital area like the one we are living, people are craving these unforgettable moments to share with friends and family. Aren’t you?

So, let me start telling you what where we went and what I saw!

11am – Kickoff Brunch at The Trading Post

Curiosities City Secrets Siemens BTSNYC Tour The Trading Post

We meet the entire group at a great spot I have never been to: The Trading Post.

It was great to meet the group, we all introduced ourselves, learned a bit more about Siemens and had a glimpse of what was about to happen during the day!

The itinerary sounded extremely exciting and up my alley, since I’m all about explore the “behind the scenes” spots and facts about New York!

Oh, and the food was fantastic!

I had the asparagus risotto with fava beans, English peas, goat cheese and soft poached hen’s egg, a refreshing salad and a trio of ice creams!

A great way to start the day!

12:30pm – World Trade Center Memorial Fountains

Curiosities City Secrets Siemens BTSNYC Tour World Trade Memorial Fountains

Ok, so this place is quite special. We all know about the 9/11 event, how it impacted not only the lives of so many families out there that lost their loved ones, but also of an entire Nation.

It took years of very hard physical and emotional work to reconstruct that part of the city. And, World Trade Center Memorial Fountains, came out to be a beautiful homage to the lives that were lost.

Obviously the hardest part of it all, was not the physical exhaustion. It was being able to think and put together a project so beautifully and carefully thought for, that was able to truly and respectfully honor ever single life that was lost that day – from people in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and the Stonycreek Township in Pennsylvania, to all passengers in the planes, the brave firefighters that fought through the smoke and law enforcement officers.

The project was led by Delta Fountains, experts in designing and manufacturing the most renowned fountains in the world. All the motorized pumps and totally integrated automation technology is Siemens.

Joe Petry, President of Delta Fountains, talked to us about this monumental project.

Did you know that The World Trade Center Memorial Fountains are the largest man-made waterfalls and reflecting pool in the entire world?

The fountains sit exactly where the towers were originally located. They had phenomenal planning for it to be as perfect and precise as it is – mechanically and visually.

Here is the list of the most relevant and even curious facts that you should know about it:

  • Idea of the project was to reflect the absence of the lost souls
  • Fountains run 24h / day at a constant flow what is automated to monitor itself in an energy efficient way regardless of the weather
  • The recirculation systems are able to pump as much as 18,000 gallons of water at peak performance, every minute of every season
  • It’s intelligent enough to know the environmental conditions and understand if, for example, it needs to adjust the water in the system, not to over flow the pumps, in case it’s raining
  • The fall is 29-feet tall and had to be precisely planned to allow water to flow constantly, despite the weather conditions
  • The total drop – including the waterfall and the void in the center – add to 49-feet
  • The void is 40ft x 40ft
  • But, the water pool you can see, is only 1,5-foot deep
  • You can touch the sterilized water beneath the engraved names around the fountains
  • The stainless steel weir structure, designed by Delta Fountains was the most challenging. Through numerous testing, they found out that the weir structure needed to be exactly at 1/16th inch from each other, with an even water flow, over the entire 1,400 linear feet structure, to have the desired results
  • Water rises up peacefully, looks very still and fall perfectly into the fountain because of gaps in the stones
  • Sandy flowed in from the Hudson River, around the fountains, into the structure, causing over U$100 million in damages and flooding all the 9/11 artifacts in the Museum

Siemens cutting-edge automation technologies:

  • It offered high tech engineering, automation control and pump flow precision
  • 16 motorized pumps – controlled through Siemens VFD’s (Variable Frequency Drives) – regulates water passing through weirs. Their biggest challenge during the project was to figure out how to keep 600,000 gallons of water in each pool constantly flowing and crystal clear
  • The solution was the comprehensive Siemens SIMATIC S7-300 programmable controller solution, a first generation technology, that dramatically reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions
  • It’s controlled daily and remotely from Jacksonville, Florida, through the WinCC Flexible, an engineering software
  • The weather station, with PLC’s (Programmable Logic Controllers) monitors the wind temperature, velocity and pressure to control and even shut down the system, in case of extreme necessity
  • Its fully integrated diagnostic system monitored with HMI (Human Machine Interface), with touch-screens make advanced graphics to detail and oversee all details with precision and operating cost-savings
  • The sensors on it and the ability to have preventative maintenance make it electronically sustainable
  • Siemens has the greatest equipment in the market to integrate with the computer system, with 3-year warranty, sustainable practices and was a company clearly not focused only on making money, hence the success!

3:30pm – Carnegie Hall

Curiosities City Secrets Siemens BTSNYC Tour Carnegie Hall Fernanda Paronetto

The Carnegie Hall is one of the world’s most famous concert venue and in the words of many experts “It’s the #1.” It was founded back in April of 1891 – built by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and designed by the architect William Burnet Tuthill.

How did the idea to build the Hall come to life? Andrew Carnegie’s wife, Louise Whitfield, sang at the Oratorio Society and during their honeymoon, she asked Mr. Carnegie to build her a music hall as a wedding gift. And, voilá! In no time, it was up and running beautifully!

Here, we were hosted by Richard Malenka, the Chief Administrative Officer and an “unofficial historian.” He is known for having super valuable and curious stories of Carnegie Hall and a priceless knowledge too.

Oh! One of the highlights was actually being able to go on stage at the Isaac Stern Auditorium, also known as the Main Hall. It’s considered the most prestigious concert stage in the US. Why? Because of the mix of acoustical quality/warmth and visual experience. The totality of the experience makes it one of the best.

Now, here are the top curiosities about the place that called my attention:

  • The fluke!!! Andrew Carnegie hired the architect William B. Tuthill to travel world and build a totally different music hall, from what he’d seen. It ended up being more an Opera house than concert hall. The Fluke: Tuthill never actually built a concert hall!
  • Carnegie Hall boasts its fantastic 165,000 square feet, 3 auditoriums and over 3,600 seats
  • They host up to 700 concerts and 700,000 visitors a year. WOW, right!?
  • Names like Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King, The Beatles, Igor Stravinsky, Louis Armstrong, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Maria Callas, Caetano Veloso, Luciano Pavarotti and others have been on stage
  • The building was fully redesigned thinking about technology mixed with sustainability
  • The unique acoustics is a driving force and it’s important to maintain it and to keep the high levels and quality

Siemens was part of the project to modernize the building. Their technological partner, responsible for implementing fire safety, electronic security and building automation. The project not only modernized this historical landmark, but also make it more energy efficient.

Plus, Richard said something super important: “Tech is serving the institution well when it is invisible.” And this is exactly what Siemens has done!

Because of this brilliant partnership, Carnegie Hall has been awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification, 1 point from Gold.

Siemens cutting-edge automation technologies at work here:

  • They’ve installed sensors outside to have a more responsive and immediate response and had to learn how to problem solve the reality of working on a landmark structure and implement a contemporary technology
  • The security system (Siemens SiPass access control), ensures the highest security for guests, staff and talent inside the building
  • The Fire and Life Safety System’s precision and velocity guarantee the emergency control system to immediately activate the fire door closure, elevator management and air handlers
  • The Centralized Control manages the ventilation, air conditioning and heating in one platform, permitting even being remotely controlled, if desired. The system keeps track and analyzes any necessary electrical repair and maintenance
  • The challenges revolved around working on a landmarked building, that restricts countless interventions
  • Now, the 125+ year old landmark is utilizing the next-gen tech found in brand new buildings throughout NYC!

Siemens was able to bring Carnegie Hall into the 21st Century!

To end this fantastic day, with some of the most amazing experiences and priceless knowledge, we headed to Chelsea Piers for a boat-dinner!

The Bateaux New York Dining Cruise was a great experience and way to end the day. But, the interesting information about it, is that the route passes very close to Lady Liberty! To be very honest, I always thought it was a bit too touristy, and it still is, but it’s worth experiencing it once in your life!

And, this is where Siemens comes into play again! They told us that back in 2012, Siemens technology was chosen as the perfect solution to be part of the Life Safety Upgrade Program, led by the U.S. National Park Service, for the Statue of Liberty.

The purpose was to upgrade not only the Statue of Liberty’s emergency rescue elevator, but also the engineering framework called Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Portal software. In addition, they also used Siemens safety PLC’s – safety modules and comfort panels to ensure redundancy or operations!

As said above, the best type of tech, is the invisible one. And, once again, Siemens showed us how they are part of New York City’s engine!

Here is more on the TIA Portal, in case you’re still curious:

The TIA Portal allows automation processes to be designed optimally and efficiently from a single computer screen. This ground-breaking innovation shortens the engineering cycle, saves commissioning time, and reduces maintenance costs and TCO (total cost of ownership).

The Life Safety project included the need to upgrade both the safety and function of the 30-year old obsolete rescue elevator which had reached the end of its useful life. The new rescue elevator is a special purpose personnel machine that uses innovative technology to enhance safety and reliability making the system more user friendly. The TIA portal brings efficiency and reliability to the project by allowing and integrated work platform to manage the world class Siemens Safety PLC and Comfort Panel hardware, which make up the heart of the safety rated elevator controller.

The elevator is designed and intended for emergency personnel, not public use, giving EMTs, firefighters, and other service personnel access to the Statue when someone in distress needs to be reached and retrieved. The system includes the Siemens Fail Safe Safety CPU, various digital inputs and outputs, and the Siemens’ HMI comfort panel, all of which were designed and commissioned using TIA Portal. The project also uses PROFIBUS communication protocols and PROFINET industrial Ethernet.

As I mentioned, this was a 2-day experience, so take a look what Day 2 looked like!

We started at the Arthur Ashe Stadium where the US Open is currently happening. Then, we headed for tasting and lunch at the Other Half Brewery in Brooklyn. Finally, we finished our day at LO3. They are a young NY company working on the Brooklyn Microgrid project with a blockchain enabled transactive energy platform!
