A Different Type of NYC Truck: Uprooted Flower Truck

Shop Specialties UpRooted Flower Truck Client

New York City is known for the countless food trucks roaming tirelessly around the city. You can find food trucks, ice cream trucks, juice trucks and even “fashion” trucks. But, Uprooted Flower Truck is the one and only, flower truck!

Uprooted describes themselves are “NYC’s florist on wheels”, which I think is pretty awesome. They are pioneers in launching this business and we have to agree that if you’re a pioneer in NY, you’ll most likely thrive!

It all started back in April of 2015, the exact month that I actually moved from my hometown São Paulo, Brazil to New York City!! What an exciting month! Hahaha!

Founders Ashley Custer and Kristin Heckler ran a super successful Kickstarter campaign, raised $15,000 and started their entrepreneurial path! And, what a journey!

New York is known for being the birth city of countless successful startups, but is quite tough having a brilliant idea no one has thought about, right?

When I met Ashley, back in February of 2016, she told me that her very first job was working at a flower shop, at the age of 14.  She majored in Criminal Justice at Temple University, but felt totally uninspired with the current social system. When she moved to NY with Kristen, her Co-Founder and Partner, she got back to working with flowers to brighten people’s lives – and also, her own.

On the other hand, Kristen, always had an entrepreneurial spirit. As her first job, she founded a local event planning business in her hometown: Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She studied Women’s Studies and Spanish at Duke University, but chose to follow a career as a Theater Director. That was actually what brought the duo to NYC in 2013. Kristin was going to attend her MFA at The New School. Today, she continues to self-produce theatre as well as working on Uprooted Flower Truck.

So, let’s talk about the truck!

The truck has a floral cooler, electrical system, work counters, and sink with hot water – surely a fully functional florist on wheels! Plus, there is no way to miss it, when it passes by or is parked somewhere around the city. It’s gorgeous and with beautiful bright colors!

Flower bouquets are prepared and sold in three sizes – “the studio”, “the loft”, and “the penthouse” ranging from $12 – $45. Pretty good price for NYC!!!

Are you organizing an event? Needing new ideas of how to “wow” your clients, your team or your friends & family can be quite exhausting. We certainly know how event planning can be crazy! Phiuf! So, besides being able to have all your flower arrangements organized by Uprooted Flower Truck, have you ever thought about actually “booking a truck”? They organize custom floral events including bouquet bars, flower crowns, & branded bloom giveaways.

And, of course, weddings! I love everything about wedding, but the flower decoration is something I always look forward to! Why? Well, I have friends in the flower business in Brazil and became passionate about it! Anyway, their arrangements are certainly the style I want for my own wedding. They’re extremely colorful, with exotic flowers, unique arrangements and that no one will ever have the same! So, talk to the girls to explain what you want for your wedding!

Now, if you’re the type that loves Doing It Yourself (DIY), the girls organize pretty cool workshops to learn how to make the perfect flower arrangements.

You’ll be sure to learn all the tips and tricks behind doing the perfect vase and bouquets. I had an “express” course when we shot the YouTube video and was amazed at little tricks that make all the difference on the final result!

And lastly, if you live in New York and love having you home weekly decorated with beautiful flowers, but like every true New Yorker, you have absolutely no time to refill your vases, take a look at the Uprooted Subscription! Besides saving money, it’ll save you tons of time and fill your home with gorgeous arrangements. As they explain:

“Treat yourself or one of your favorites with a gift that keeps blooming! Choose your delivery dates, tell us about your preferences & we’ll send you the freshest flowers in town!”

We are sure you’ll enjoy it!

If you want to really go “pro”, take a look at the post we wrote about the Flower School in NYC.

“Looking back to move forward.” ~ Helio Ascari

We all know how valuable handcrafted goods are, right? Furthermore, we also know how they exponentially increase the charm of a place.

Founded in 2011 by the designer Helio Ascari and frame builder Gary Mathis, Ascari Bicycles fuses a timeless sense of fashion with an equally timeless appreciation for the hand-built bicycle.

With the finest material, Ascari builds their own bikes – one by one. In addition, he cares about the minimal details, making sure it’s the perfect bike in aesthetics, fit and ride.

As a matter of fact, here is how Helio explains:

“At Ascari Bicycles we design and build our bikes. All our frames, forks and stems are made by us in the USA. By using time proven techniques and only the best materials we are able to build the finest bicycles on the planet.

As with the details such as our logos and head badges, the dropout faces and serial number badges are brazed in copper and brass.

They are works of art themselves. With a jewelers touch we bring the luxury to compliment the time and passion built into each Ascari.

As the Ascari name is synonymous with Formula One auto racing, Ascari Bicycles hopes to be as synonymous with the enduring legacies of fashion and cycling.”

Are craving to order your first Ascari bike? Well, you can be involved as much as you like in the design process! It is really going to be a one of a kind art work for you!

In 2016, they opened their first brick & mortar store, in collaboration with two friends. New York City based Max Poglia and Milan based Alessandro Squarzi. What a talented trio!

The store is named The Space NYC and is one of the most amazing places we’ve recently seeing opening. It’s a multi-faceted location with a store, workshop space, creative studio and a highly-curated showroom, in Bushwick.

We adore their work and the newly launched location in Bushwick is fascinating. It’s certainly a unique store, great concept, fantastic products and with a very strong and individual identity. Therefore, they are light years ahead of the traditional retail market.

Most certainly, one of the top places we recommend to visit if you’re passing by New York City, or if you live here.

Moreover, if you have any specific request regarding products, workshops, events, or any Corporate inquiries, let us help you out!

And last, after visiting the The Space NYC, you might want to check out the neighborhood. We love Honey’s, side by side with the store, with great wine options. AP Café, is a small spot, perfect for a coffee pitstop. In addition, if you want to explore the neighborhood at night, visit our friends at Lot 45 Bushwick, or see what’s going on at the House of Yes.

Hours:
The Space NYC opens Monday – Friday: 12pm-6pm
Weekend visits by appointment only!
To learn more about Ascari Bicycles, are also by appointment only.

How it works?

Students and guests curate all the course and workshop topics at Brooklyn Brainery. So, teachers are part of the most amazing group of people spread throughout New York.

If you have a passion and would like to share your expertise and talent with a group of like minded individuals, come and teach!

The people in charge of running this community-driven business will take care of all the details for you. From planning the class and organizing all the sign ups, to promoting the workshop and gathering all the material you need. You only need to come and teach.

What you have to do? Focus on what you’ll do best: teach! Take time to organize your class in a unique and engaging way, where students will leave wanting more!

The classes are are usually set up to last from 1-2 weeks. The community is smart enough to organize it all and keep it as inexpensive as possible. Their understanding is that you “shouldn’t have to spend a paycheck to learn something new.” And we agree!

So, in general, classes and workshops are something like $30, for a couple of sessions. But, they still do offer an entire variety of free events!

Follow Brooklyn Brianery on Instagram to see all the cool things happening in their two locations, in Brooklyn.

Plus, you’ll love reading about other workshops in NY,  like the ones at the National Gourmet Institute, located in the heart of Manhattan. And still, how about learning about French pastries with Chef Simon Herfray?

These types of activities are great to organize with friends and family, or even for corporate groups, so contact our experts to brainstorm great experiences catered for you!

We are not here today total about a new meditation technique, nor a new Yoga practice we recently discovered in New York. Today, we are writing about a place we always pass by in Manhattan, but took us a while to walk in. So, one day we got pretty curious and opened our hearts to a new discovery.

The place is called Lion Brand Yarn Studio and for our amazement, we loved everything there!

Yup, that’s right! This yarn studio is located in the heart of Manhattan and is a perfect place to learn the art of knitting!

This practice is definitely NOT considered anymore one only the cute “grandmas” – that  we personally adore – but for everyone interested in expressing themselves artistically. On the other hand, many people that knit consider it one of the best types of meditation practices today.

The art of knitting is taught today for people of all ages, genders, styled, but with this common interest.

They offer some pretty amazing classes and workshops. Moreover, they also offer some very interesting free events, and even private lesson appointments.

You can also see online their schedule for the free special event night, where they feature a guest speaker, fashion show, or other cool happenings. It is always pretty fun with a curious and engaging crowd!

In addition, once a month they have a “Men’s Night”. So this is for the guys out there – this is not something only for women any more!

Have fun knitting and being creative! Besides, it’s quite relaxing!

New York City also has come other very interest classes and workshops. You might want to explore a few others, like the Flower School NY and Korean Cooking Classes at an amazing industrial kitchen in Manhattan.
