4 Unexpected Places You Can Visit In New York [NYC Secrets]

4 Unexpected places to visit in NYC FDR Track 61 Waldorf Astoria Fernanda Paronetto

Although NYC is one of the busiest cities in the world, it’s also the home of countless secrets. Take a look below to see 4 unexpected places you can visit in New York!

New York City, or the “Big Apple” as it is well known, is one of the busiest cities in the world. It is home to millions of people, as well as thousands of tourists who come to see the wonders and marvels of its huge economy and millions of businesses. We love exploring unexpected places you can visit in New York.

There’s a lot to plan when you visit New York, from deciding which attractions are absolute must-sees to getting all your tickets and travel insurance in order. (Oh! Did you know that one week in a US hospital can cost $30,000, for example? It’s definitely not something you want to forget!).

Most tourists flock to the famous sites and top attractions such as the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. But, the experience in these places might not be as expected because of the huge crowds taking photos, walking around or just standing there idle.

There are, however, other lesser-known places where you can go and have a better, less tourist-centric experience.

Here are 4 unexpected places you can visit in New York:

Track 61

You may well not have known, but there was a secretive presidential train platform deep under the Grand Central Terminal, called Track 61 one of NYC’s subway secrets.

It was mostly used by the heads of state to secretly commute to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, first in the late 1930’s by the then-president General John J. Pershing, and second by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the early 1940’s.

President Roosevelt hid from the public due to his physical condition, after he contracted polio at the age of 39 and was confined to a wheelchair.

The track has since stopped being used and is mostly abandoned. As of now, it’s currently completely closed to the public and the MTA doesn’t allow anyone to visit the location. But, there is an amazing tour of the Grand Central Terminal secrets that we love and you can explore too!

Unfortunately today no one can access there anymore due to security reasons.

Brooklyn Heights’ Hidden Subway Ventilator

A walk through Joralemon Street, in Brooklyn Heights, might seem like nothing out of the ordinary, from the beautiful brownstones to the relaxing environment and being steps from the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge Park.

However, what is unknown to many is that 58 Joralemon Street looks exactly like the rest of the houses, but is actually a subway ventilator used as an emergency exit. (OBS: In the picture above, the fake house is the one in the middle.)

It was a residential home before being converted in the 1800’s during the subway extension from Manhattan to Brooklyn. The house is heavily guarded by the NYPD, so getting close to it might be a problem. Yikes

The Blockhouse

Located in the northern part of the Central Park, right by lower Harlem, is The Blockhouse. It is said to be the second oldest thing in the park and dates back to the early 1800’s during the war with the British.

The Blockhouse was supposed to help the Americans defend themselves, but was never used, because the British never reached the city. The building is always locked, in time lost its wooden roof and is totally abandoned.

While visiting it, take your time to walk to the East side of the park and take a peek at other spots like: Fort Fish, Fort Clinton, Nutter’s Battery and Charles A. Dana Discovery Center…all located around the Harlem Meer. Oh! Meer means “Lake” in Dutch!

Location: West Side at 109th Street and Central Park West.

Tribeca’s Dream House

Established in the early 1990’s by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, the house is secretly located in Tribeca, just off Church Street. It acts a quiet peaceful space where anybody can go, sit, take a deep breath and just relax.

The incense, sound art and light installation in the room are therapeutic and will leave you calm and fresh. The mellow looped music changes depending on your position in the room, whether you are upright or relaxing on your back.

The place is currently under La Monte Young’s foundation known as MELA and is financed by the Dia Art Foundation.

Many people believe that the best NYC hotels are located in Manhattan. So, we decided to show you one of our favorite hotels in New York, located in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn!

The 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge officially opened this past February and in no time, became the new hot spot to stay (and play!), when in NY.

“Thoughtfully designed. Intentionally built.”

It’s the 3rd property of the group, that has a hotel in South Beach – Miami and their 1st NYC location in Midtown Manhattan, steps away from Central Park.

Not only is the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge strategically located by the Brooklyn Bridge – with one of Brooklyn’s prime views of Manhattan, but the entire concept behind the property is pretty cool.

To start, the group behind these properties is active and implements sustainable practices and techniques throughout all their hotels.

We are all about working and supporting Sustainable Traveling – a topic widely discussed this year after the United Nations announced 2017 as the Year of Sustainability.

The idea that travelers today are looking for “smart travel” where you can have fun and, in addition, leave a positive impact in the local community, is growing and what we hope will soon go mainstream.

Moreover, as we discussed at an event we recently sponsored called Travel+SocialGood Summit, sustainable traveling should not be a topic of discussion, since all traveling should be sustainable.

The 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is aligned with the 3 pillar of Sustainable Traveling: Social, Economic and Environmental.

So, let’s talk about their amenities!

Hotels 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge Dumbo View

To start, the gorgeous rooms are decorated reclaimed woods, industrial steel, 100% organic cotton sheets and custom hemp-blend mattress by Keetsa. We enjoy the floor-to-ceiling windows – many of which feature an unobstructed view of New York City!

We love cool bathrooms. You can expect bathrooms equipped with robes, socks and soft cotton-knit towels. Plus, their design is pretty unique and integrated perfectly into the room. The interesting and sustainable aspect of it, is that they use triple-filtered rain showers, that come from the rainwater tank built beneath the hotel.

If you want to stay there in grand style, check out the Riverhouse Room, a.k.a. Presidential Suite. It has 3 bedrooms in a 2,000 square foot space, carved stone tub and artwork by fantastic local artisan. And still, a super cool curated minibar where you’ll find some house-made cocktail recipes. How much better can it get? Well, from your bed you have a priceless view of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan’s skyline!

In addition, the hotel offers some delicious restaurant and food & drink options!

Their main restaurant is called The Osprey. As they explain, they serve “market driven American comfort food” and just recently opened early November. The restauranteur behind it is the expert, Matt Abramcyk, known for places like Yves, Warren 77, Tiny’s and Beatrice Inn, where our Insider Interviewee, Natalie Klein, recommended a while back. Matt partnered with chef Michael Oliver and brought in chef Mike Poiarkoff to run the cuisine. The décor, of course, if fabulous with floor-to-ceiling windows and a great view of Brooklyn Bridge Park. They are open daily for dinner at 5:30pm.

Their café, Neighbors, worked exclusively with local Brooklyn purveyors offering super fresh, healthy and seasonal products.

Located at their lobby area, the café receives natural sunlight – a perfect scenery. Their menu offers countless beverages, smoothies and Devoción coffee. In addition, for breakfast they have delicious sandwiches, pastries, granolas, bagels and eggs. Lunch and dinner menus are abundant with soups, salads, sandwiches, sweets and options for the kids. And, they have a fantastic curated selection of ready-made Brooklyn artisanal goods.

The 1 Rooftop is the place to be, especially during the hot and deliciously humid months of the year. Yes. We love “humid” day. They have outdoor seating, full-bar service, great music, beautiful and energetic crowd, tasty bites and a seasonal rooftop pool. It’s a great place to go for drinks or celebrate a birthday with friends! The view? Yup. Priceless! Seeing the sunset and the Manhattan lights lighting up is surely the ultimate Brooklyn sunset experience. They’re open daily from 6am – 10pm.

Hotels 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge Dumbo Rooftop
View from the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge rooftop.

And still, the Lobby Lounge is an excellent option for drinks before dinner or before going out at night. They focus on local botanicals, local beers and seasonally foraged ingredients. We love it! They open daily from 4pm through 11:30pm.

After spending a long and exhausting day exploring New York, we can’t forget to mention the Bamford Haybarn Spa!

Open daily from 10am – 8pm, the spa offers a tempting selection of holistic treatments focused on nourishing you from inside out: body – mind – sprit, as they say. All products are made with natural and organic ingredients organically certified. Treatments happen in one of their 12 treatment rooms start with a default hand-and-foot ritual. They range from facials, body treatments, massages, manicures & pedicures and grooming.

Also, this is most certainly a place we recommend to consider if you’re planning a NYC Wedding, a birthday, an important celebration or even a work event. If you’re not certain where to start organizing it all, let our experts help you out and for Corporate Requests, we can assist you too.

For the pet-lovers, they are pet-friendly! Just note: your pet should be under 40lb (18kg). They also state that you have “another kind of pet”, they’re happy to try and accommodate them!

They have other locations across the globe, so be sure to check them out!

This week, our Founder talked to the beautiful lifestyle, food and travel Instagrammer, Tamara Peterson (@_TamaraPeterson).

Tamara is a native New Yorker, born and raised in NY. For the past 10 years, she’s been living in the charming Brooklyn neighborhood called Clinton Hill and she did confess her deepest love for it.

Her friends and followers are always asking her “why” they haven’t seen these gorgeous townhouses with amazing façades she always posts. Her answer? “You haven’t been to Fort Greene and Clinton Hill in Brooklyn!”

Tamara started her Instagram page, that has now over 187k, around 3.5 years ago as a hobby and it eventually started growing and becoming her second business. Her main work was as a professional organizer for 15 years, but now she works equal time between both businesses, definitely making her days pretty busy!

Her exciting professional life doesn’t stop there! In addition, she also has a background in Fashion working for Glamour Magazine!

The Instagram hobby brought her several new, amazing work possibilities related to travel. In May, she was invited by Viking Cruises to go on a breathtaking 15 day trip that passed through fascinating places like: Norway, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Russia, Finland, Sweden and during her last week, before coming back to NY, she added a quick visit through London and Paris. Can’t complain, right?!

Now, in August, she’ll be exploring the Hudson Valley, in upstate New York. So, keep your eyes opened and check her Instagram feed to find out more about this stunning region in the State of NY.

Tamara shared with us her Top 7 Tips of place in her “hood”, so get your Metro Passes out and come explore them!

Colonia Verde

Curiosities Insider Interviews Tamara Peterson Colonia Verde

“Colonia Verde is a small restaurant in Fort Greene which I love. I’m always there and love sitting outside – they have a lovely garden in the back that you’d never expect to find. It’s the type of place that transforms you when you leave the city and go into Brooklyn.”

As they say in Spanish “La comida compartida sabe major!”…which means “Shared food tastes much better!” The restaurant has a clear Latin American inspiration and offers a menu with the most delicious locally sourced fresh ingredients. They have great brunches, but are opened mostly for dinner.

Oh! And they offer Full Catering Services and Event Services too, so do take a look online and contact them for further information.

“Maison-May is a new place, and it’s adorable. They have a restaurant and a more casual café. It’s incredible. They have home items, pastry, coffee, amazing wooden tables I love. Definitely a hidden gem.”

Maison-May is explained as: “physically, two distinct places: Maison-May Dekalb & Maison-May Vanderbilt. They were founded and are led by Catherine May. They’re retelling the story of what the restaurant business is all about. Maison-May is an ethos, a way of operating rooted in replenishing, feeding & empowering. More than a business model, Maison-May is a way of living.”

So, Maison-May Vanderbilt has breakfast and lunch, a café, a patisserie, plus they offer private dinners, a drop-off menu and sell some beautiful home objects.

Maison-May Dekalb offers dinners, brunches on the weekends, they rent the space for private events and is a beautiful spot for a small, intimate ‘brownstone wedding’.

Even though it’s located in the center of Manhattan, steps away from Central Park, once your inside the 1 Hotel Central Park, everything become calm and you feel as if you can finally breathe and relax.

The experience starts off with a stunning, rustic, green entrance, where every detail makes you in awe. The furniture are mainly made out of wood and the pillows and details are very unique. You’ll find a small farmer’s market where you can get fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts for snacks. Yum!

The rooms and suites are beautifully done, with gorgeous rustic reclaimed wood – same found through out the hotel), super clean lines and even energizing friendly plants in different spots to make you company.

With fresh farm organic ingredients the restaurant Jams, by Jonathan Waxman is one of the highlights for guests and visitors.

Also, the 2nd floor offers a lounge with drinks to relax from the busy city. It’s also a great place to work, if you need to catch up on some emails.

If you can’t live without exercise, their gym is a great option to start (or finish) your day. You’re surely going to enjoy the natural lighting!

In addition, the 1 Hotels are great for kids with curious, cute amenities like “in-room camping with sleeping bags, binoculars to borrow for stargazing or bird-watching in Central Park, and even games.”

And still, are you a pet person? The 1 Hotels are pet friendly, so ask for your “BarkBox amenity, beds and bowls, and occasional neighborhood “yappy-hour” events”.

Did we forget to mention that the hotel was all planned based on the pillars of sustainable tourism!? This is definitely up our alley, since we are huge advocates and believers in spreading and working with sustainable travel.

The hotel offers spaces for networking and social events like meetings, weddings, catering and any type of celebration you’re looking for.

Lastly, being in the heart of Manhattan can be amazing for some people. But, if you’re more a “Brooklyn-type” person, they have the perfect hotel for you in Brooklyn Heights – and we love it. It’s beside the Brooklyn Bridge with a priceless view of Manhattan’s skyline.

Plus, they have another hotel in Miami, if you’re ever around.
