New York is New York because of its situation on one of the world’s best harbors.  And, NYC’s Maritime History Tour will tell you everything about this!

For the first three and half centuries of its life, this city was defined and sustained by its maritime operations.

However, in the past few decades most of the 8 million people who call New York City home or the 60 million people who visit annually barely even give a second thought to the harbor, bays, rivers, or boats that used to define and supply this popular set of islands.

New York’s maritime roots are often overlooked and ignored.

Take a journey back through lower Manhattan with Untapped Cities guides Justin Rivers and Mandy Edgecombe to experience New York as the world’s greatest ports of call.

BOOK NOW!

Best New York City Passes To The Top NYC Attractions

BTSNYC Experiences On Going Best New York City Passes NYC Top Attractions

There is so much to see in New York City that it can get pretty overwhelming and expensive. See the best New York City Passes and differences between The Sightseeing Pass x CityPASS. Go to the top NYC attractions! Pick the one that serves you best!

BTSNYC Experiences On Going Best New York City Passes NYC Top Attractions
The Metropolitan Museum of Art ©Behind the Scenes NYC

Even though we are focused on talking about local spots, brand and events far from the touristy scene, we also understand that many of our readers and followers have never been to New York City.

And, we do agree that going to main attractions is a must! We’ve even written two great Guides: 1st Cheap NYC Guide: 40+ Top Attractions and the 2nd Cheap NYC Guide: 30 Top Attractions.

So, with that in mind, we wanted to share with you a bit about the two Pass options that offers access to these top attractions, making your trip easier, and definitely cheaper!

We know that many of the must-see attractions are quite expensive. When you add all them up, it can be a big investment, specially if you’re traveling on a budget. But, don’t worry! New York is known as a very expensive city, but there are amazing options for all pockets!

If you’ve never been to New York City, you do have to check off major attractions like The Statue of Liberty, museums like the wonderful Metropolitan Museum of Art (aka MET), the 9/11 Memorial, The Top of the Rock, etc…

Now, here is the 1st step to help you can decide: If you’re thinking about visiting at least 3 of these spots, it’s already worth purchasing these Passes!

Other factors to consider to help you decide to buy a pass:

  • #1: It’s cheaper! If you buy all attractions separately, depending on how many you’re visiting, it turns out much more expensive.
  • Optimizes your time. Specially if you have only a few days in the city, these passes are super convenient during the trip. Once you buy, you’re good to go!
  • They have different options to better suit your needs, so be sure to see what is best for you and your family/friends!
  • Many museums have free entrances in specific days/times, so check them before going, so you can go to more attractions with the Passes, and not “waste” them on the ones that can be free!
  • If you’re with a big group, or even traveling with family and kids, it might be a good option to expedite things during the day!

Below, we briefly explain the two great options when it comes to the Passes:

The Sightseeing Pass

Observation Decks, Museums, Bus Tours, Airport Transfer and other sightseeing costs can add up pretty quickly and take hours to plan! The Sightseeing Pass has 2 Pass options to best suit your needs:

  • Flex Pass: This is great if you don’t want to rush to see everything you want and if you’re still not sure. You can take your time to plan and pick up to 12 attractions, from a total of 100! Plus, the pass is valid for 30 days from purchase date.
  • Day Pass: You can buy as many days as you’d like and you have unlimited attractions within the days you purchased. It’s up to 10 consecutive days. Good for people that are going to really use it going to at least 2-3 attractions/day and have a shorter trip to NYC. It includes, NYC Hop on Hop off buses during the days you purchased!

You can save up to Save $200+ on 10 NYC Attractions!!!

NYC Sightseeing Pass

The Sightseeing Pass is great for exclusive NYC Attractions, transfers to the 3 airports and even to go to the famous Woodbury Outlet, if you’re into shopping! They have some very cool exclusive attractions – ex: They are the only pass for the One World Observatory!

  • Over 100 Attractions included
  • 6 Double-decker Bus Tours
  • Get Unlimited Hop on Hop off Buses in NYC
  • 2 Great Pass options for every budget
  • $40 Credit for additional tours, attractions, Broadway shows and dinner cruises

Here is an easy way to pick and choose:
BTSNYC Experiences On Going Sightseeing Pass New York

If you’re still not sure, take a look at their NYC Prices page, where you’ll be able to have a better idea of prices and how you’re saving money!

Another good thing, is that USA Sightseeing Pass is literally 1 ticket to over 250 Attractions in 10 USA Destinations, so if you’re traveling somewhere else, after NYC, be sure to check it out!

To be part of their community, be sure to add #thesightseeingpass to your IG posts, and tag them

CityPASS

As they say: “Spend Less and Experience More at Top Attractions”.

We really do want you to “leave with more than you came with”—whether that’s more money to spend on other parts of your vacation (or to save), more time to spend with the people you’re traveling with (or yourself), an enriched vacation experience, or some combination of all of those things. The concept remains as vital and relevant today as it did back then, as we recognize the increasing value that experiences bring to all of our lives.

So, what does it include:

  • One simple purchase
  • 9 consecutive days of validity, including the 1st day of use
  • Expedited entry at many attractions
  • Instant delivery with convenient mobile or printable ticket options

Two Options:

  • CityPass: 6 attractions (3 fix + 3 to choose from)
  • Any 3 that you decide

NYC Food Trends Taking The City By Storm

Dining NYC Food Trends Insects Black Ant

Yes, New York has every possible cuisine you can desire or imagine on Earth. That said, take a look at the NYC food trends taking the city by storm. Some are not super new, but probably came to stay!

Dining NYC Food Trends Insects Black Ant
How about a pair of crunchy insects in your dish? Lol! ©BlackAntNYC

New York is the restaurant capital of the world – just consider there are 24,000 eating establishments in Manhattan alone.

In fact it has been estimated that you if you ate at a different restaurant every day, it would take you over 22 years to dine at them all.

One of the reasons that NYC is so diverse for dining, is that there are influences and cultures from all around the globe. This means that there are always great new NYC food trends, which you can even try cooking at home.

Take a look at a few of the food trends below and let’s see how adventurous you are when trying new cuisines! Lol!

Glorious Grasshoppers

As we think more about sustainability and food ethics, insects are hitting restaurant tables in a big way. They are actually an excellent source of protein and delicious with a little spice.

If you head to Toloache, the Mexican restaurant headed up by Julian Medina, you can sample them in tacos, hot with chili and cooked with crunch.

The Black Ant, in the East Village, is another great eatery that is embracing grasshoppers. In fact, almost every item on their menu uses insects. The grasshopper-crusted shrimp however are a triumph.

If you want to have a taste at home you can easily buy grasshoppers online, they may even become a household staple.

Beautiful Baogels

Dining NYC Food Trends Baogel Black Seed Bagels
Baogel at Black Seed Bagels. ©BlackSeedBagel

The baogel is another wonderful cultural hybrid, featuring a soft pork belly filling, usually found in a bao bun, and of course combined with a soft, bagel.

It is the creation of Black Seed Bagels and Chinese restaurant Nom Wah Kuai, and usually served with a chili cream cheese on the side for ultimate dipping.

To try this at home, the pork belly cooks best in a sous vide machine, a beautifully gentle slow cook that will leave the pork tender and succulent, ready to be folded into bagel dough.

You can then return the bagel into the machine, to make a really soft baogel. This trend just goes to show how versatile water bath cooking is.

Raindrop Cake

Dining NYC Food Trends Raindrop Cake
The peculiar Raindrop Cake. ©RaindropCake

The raindrop cake is a thing of simplistic beauty. Originating from Japan, it is a beautiful dessert that is made from water, agar and sugar.

It is served in bamboo, alongside a flour that is made from roasted soybeans. The dessert is vegan, has very few calories, but it a textural delight in the mouth.

It’s all about feeling that sweet burst of liquid on the tongue. Darren Wong, who originally brought this cake to Smorgasborg food fair said that he wanted the raindrop cake to be reminiscent of the Asian jelly desserts he ate as a child.

You can now buy kits to have a go at making the raindrop cake at home. They are delicious with a little syrup and some fresh mint on the side.

Locations: Smorgasburg has 4 locations.
Thursdays: BK Bridge Park, 6pm
Fridays: WTC, 11am – 7pm
Saturdays: 90 Kent Avenue, 11am – 6pm
Sundays: Breeze Hill, Prospect Park, 11am – 6pm

New York is a special place for dining – if you can imagine it, the likelihood is that there is a restaurant serving it. These fresh, new ideas and NYC food trends are also changing the way that we consider our home cooking.

So, come explore New York with us and don’t forget to share your discoveries in the comments below! We’d love to hear about them, so we can also check them out!

New York City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in America, attracting more than 60 million guests each year. This, thanks to its world-famous landmarks, eclectic cuisine, and unique culture.

Exploring by bike makes it easy to see parts of the city that other tourists rarely get to enjoy, and it also makes it easy to snap pictures, grab some street food, or simply take in the view.

Exploring Landmarks Downtown

Downtown, you can find many of the major landmarks of Manhattan, including the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, and Freedom Tower. You can also explore more hole-in-the-wall places, including small restaurants and specialty shops in Chinatown, Little Italy and the up and coming, South Seaport.

You can also see the filming locations of certain famous movies, including the Ghostbuster Firehouse, the Tiffany & Co. flagship store from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and many more. For a thrilling ride, you can cruise through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, the longest continuous underwater road in the U.S.

Experience Uptown Scenery

Uptown is known for its stadiums, like the famous Yankee Stadium, and museums through out the artsy Museum Mile. But, primarily tourists head up to see the scenery.

From the perspective of an automatic motorcycle, you can get some of the best possible views driving up the West Side Highway along the Hudson River. You might also see the palisades that rise over five hundred feet above, cross the George Washington Bridge, head up to the Medieval inspired MET Cloisters and wander through the less well known northern areas of Central Park.

Tour Midtown Monuments

Midtown Manhattan is home to the Empire State Building, Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, and other impressive bastions of culture and architecture.

Are you looking for something a little bit more out of the ordinary? You can visit sites such as the mysterious Rose Hill Historic House, the historic C.O. Bigelow Apothecary, or the quirky Chancellor Robert R. Livingston Masonic Library.

You’re looking to avoid the crowds and experience New York City from a unique angle? So, simply tour the city by motorcycle. Traveling by bike makes it easy to get around. You’ll be able to find all of the hidden gems that NYC has to offer.

Whether you’re riding through the streets of downtown New York, enjoying the sights of midtown, or exploring the refined uptown area, touring New York City by motorbike gives you a unique and exhilarating look at the city.

How To Enjoy NYC With Kids, Outdoors!

Curiosities Our Bucket Lists How To Enjoy NYC With Kids Outdoors Hudson River

Yes, New York is a great city for kids, so don’t worry! See below how to enjoy NYC with kids, outdoors seamlessly and have tons of fun and stories to tell!

Don’t believe people that say differently. The city is full of amazing attractions and activities for kids of all ages and we will show you what we mean!

Before we became parents, we spent countless weekends in New York City, staying out late, enjoying nice dinners, and partying at the best bars and nightclubs.

After our son was born, we realized that traveling to the Big Apple needed to change. We replaced our original itinerary with activities that were fun for the whole family.

Despite the skyscrapers, congested traffic and throngs of tourists, New York City has secluded pockets that give the kids room to play. It is possible to enjoy the great outdoors in Manhattan.

Park It

Curiosities Our Bucket Lists How To Enjoy NYC With Kids Outdoors Central Park
Central Park [Photo Credit: Courtesy of The 2 Idiots Travel Blog]
At 840 acres, Central Park is the hub for outdoor-loving families. You can rent bicycles and explore the paved trails, enjoy rides on the carousel, and try horseback riding through the park’s highlights.

This is not a just a stop for tourists – the entire park is also teaming with New Yorkers who appreciate the best of New York’s great outdoors!

We love Sheep Meadow, near the famed Tavern on the Green restaurant. It’s great for kids because of its wide open space (15 acres), kite flying, room to play catch, and loads of families.

Shop a local market and bring a picnic, or let experts cater one for you, and make a full day of sitting under the trees; the museums will still be there tomorrow. Even in the winter, you can use the park for ice skating, cross country skiing and sledding.

You can also visit waterfront parks along the Hudson and the East River, providing great views, cool breezes and lots of fresh air. We love Hudson River Park for its play areas with water features on hot, summer days.

Our son can spend hours playing in the splash park, and you’ll find mini golf and sports fields and courts for older kids to get their play on.

See the City from the Water

Curiosities Our Bucket Lists How To Enjoy NYC With Kids Outdoors Statue of Liberty

Surrounded by water – Manhattan is an island, after all – spend time on the rivers. Kayak rentals are available for the families with older kids, and you can set sail on leisure ships for an hour or two of sightseeing.

There are also some pretty cool jet ski rides up and down the Hudson, as well as around the entire island!

The Staten Island Ferry is a great way to see New York’s skyline from the Hudson – and it’s FREE!

Or, if you want to splurge, you can charter a private cruise on a small sailboat.

You can also catch the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. She stands on an island that is a national park. No need to climb to the top, just enjoy the views while your toddler plays. (This is also another great picnic spot!).

If you’ve never been to Ellis Island, it’s also a great spot, with some pretty exclusive tours.

If you’re willing to travel further, cross into New Jersey to Liberty State Park and you’ll find even more space to enjoy. Playgrounds, a boardwalk with viewfinders, and picnic tables all overlook Manhattan.

Enjoy Outdoor Attractions

Curiosities Our Bucket Lists How To Enjoy NYC With Kids Outdoors Highline
Walking the Highline [Photo Credit: Courtesy of The 2 Idiots Travel Blog]
Many of New York’s best attractions will get you outdoors, such as the Central Park Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden. The Gardens offer special activities and event for young kids and is a special treat – NY Botanical Garden and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

Or, grab your stroller and take a walk along the High Line, which stretches over a mile on an old rail line. You can take a trip to Roosevelt Island with a ride on the Roosevelt Tram providing a fun ride and cool views before you take in the skyline from the East River-based island.

Even grabbing a bite under the sun is easy to do in New York. Take advantage of the many restaurants that have rooftop dining or secret patios. You’ll be surprised how much of the city can be enjoyed in the open air. Try Birreria, the rooftop of Eataly’s grocery and market or ‘wichcraft for sandwiches, both in the Flatiron District.

And, because New York’s diverse neighborhoods offer safe playgrounds for the kids whho live close by, seek out AirBnBs or boutique hotels near a small park. It makes for a good start to your day to grab coffee and muffins for breakfast in a nearby park, as well as a relaxing end to a long day of sightseeing.

When you leave New York and download all of your photos, we bet you’ll be surprised by how many of them were taken outdoors and away from crowds. You might not even think they were taken in the city!

Oh! Wait! You’re they type that doesn’t take pictures, but always regret it after?

You might want a professional photographer that will seamlessly be with you during the day, capturing the most amazing, spontaneous moments! You’ll not even notice!

Have fun and be sure to tell your other friends how to enjoy NYC with kids! We are sure you’ll be back for more!

So many people come to NY and tell me that they’d love to have a picnic at the park. They see so many locals having fun and they want the same experience, but don’t know where to start from or don’t have time to plan it all.

In addition, going to Central Park can be an overwhelming experience due to all the tourists roaming around. But, going to Central Park, with the right information of the best hidden spots for a delicious, unique picnic, can be priceless!

Plus, it’s also a great idea for a special celebration or a romantic afternoon at the park!

Well, we love this experience, so do many of our private and corporate clients, and we’ve written about it before!

You will definitely have a great time! There are countless different options to choose from so contact us for more information and to book the experience!

Horseback Riding

BTSNYC Experiences On Going Outdoor Activities Horseback Riding Central Park

Yes! You can do horseback riding at Central Park too! Different from the carriages that over work the horses, our partner takes really good care of them.

Each horse works a maximum of 6hours a day and are transported to the park properly.

The tours are 1 hour long and pass by the most beautiful spots in the park from Strawberry Fields, where the John Lennon memorial is, to the Reservoir and other special spots.

If you have kids, it’s also a great activity since they have 10min pony rides. Little ones should be 2 years old at least and the guide is beside them all the time.

I rode Oscar, a huge, beautiful, white horse and had a great time exploring Central Park through another angle.

I had heard before that people could rent a jet ski, hop on and enjoy the Hudson River! But, I had never really tried it.

Well, I finally decided to be brave and go try it out, after all, how cool is it to actually ride a jet ski on this famous river?!

We got the ferry at a downtown spot, ride beside the 9/11 Memorial and head to a Marina on the Jersey side. It’s only 15min away from Manhattan. Super quick and seamless.

Each way costs $8/person and ferries leave quite frequently, so don’t worry.

There are 2 types of rides, a shorter one that covers mostly Midtown Manhattan and downtown, and the 2.5h ride that you actually drive around the entire Manhattan island. So cool!

I had a great time! The view is truly spectacular, it’s a priceless experience and the Hudson water is quite, by the way!
