Lets talk about Dating in New York City?! Everyone knows about the “rumors” about NYC’s dating scene and how different it is from the rest of the world! Antonia Greco tell us about the best spots to hang out, if you’re single!

If you’ve just moved to this beautiful, tireless city, or if you’ve been in New York City long enough, you will notice two topics that will always (and we mean, always!) come up during dinners or bar conversations:

  1. RENT! It’s amazing how people are eager to know how much you pay for rent and all the amenities you have in your building to justify the high prices. Note: It does not matter if they just met you, they WILL boldly ask…
  2. DATING! The “Dating Scene” in New York is, without a doubt, unique and different from anywhere else on this planet! It’s a battle to figure out all the do’s and don’ts, right? So, after you do, and everything seams to be flowing well with your beau…BOOM! The guy dumps you…

With the Dating topic in mind, our Contributor Ari Crane interviewed Antonia Greco, a NYC-based Dating and Relationship Expert for the New York Dating Coach. She is also the co-author of “Who Lies More, Men or Women? 6 Ways to Succeed in Dating, Relationships, and Life”.

Over the past eight years, Antonia’s worked one-on-one with clients of all ages to help them meet partners, date successfully, and has had a helping hand in several marriages.

In her spare time, she likes to run, fuss over cute dogs, play piano and bake pies.

“A question I often get asked by singles is ‘Where can I go to meet people?’ — Simply put, you can meet people anywhere you go. It’s just a matter of having the guts to open the dialogue and/or be approachable. That said, it’s beneficial to pick places that reflect something about your lifestyle, your passions, or something new you’d like to try.”

Here are Antonia’s top picks in the City! Do check them out and, who knows, maybe you’ll find your partner in crime, for life.

Not only all the ingredients are fantastic and super healthy, but they also produce their own delicious chocolate bars.

B-Cup

Curiosities Insider Interviews Antonia Greco B-Cup

“Whether you’re “working remotely” or in the mood for a chill place to enjoy some coffee, look no further than B-Cup. This hip little haunt is tucked away in Alphabet City and is the “office” for many singles. With free, reliable wi-fi and iced coffees served in carafes, this friendly space is a mix of funky and accommodating. Bonus: Most people come here alone so it’s the perfect place to table share during the busier hours!”

Alphabet City is part of what most people know as the East Village. The area is very residential, but it is the home of several bars, cocktail spots and super cool restaurants. The area is filled with life and great spots to uncover.

Their park is called Tompkins Square Park. You might recall it from the post we wrote about a Feeding Program our Founder coordinates, feeding 200 homeless every week!

The area has also a significant Puerto Rican community, that definitely brings an uplifting vibe. After all, we know how cheerful Puerto Ricans are, right!?

Curiosities Insider Interviews Antonia Greco Cooper Hewitt

“If you find museums to be boring, then maybe Cooper Hewitt will change your mind. The interactive environment – especially in the Immersion Room – is the perfect place to strike up conversation with others, all while interacting with art and design. When you’re done, grab a coffee from the cafe and head to the garden!”

The museum was founded in 1897 and was named “Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum”.

It’s dedicated exclusively on historical and contemporary design, making it the only museum in the US with this focus.

Therefore, it has “more than 210,000 design objects spanning 30 centuries.

From ancient textiles and works on paper to icons of modern design and cutting-edge technologies, Cooper Hewitt’s collection serves as inspiration for creative work of all kinds and tells the story of design’s paramount importance in improving our world.”

Regardless of your pace or athletic level, this is a good place to meet others – especially for those that are tired of the bar scene. Get Fit with World Famous Fight Experts at Renzo Gracie Fight Academy

Fitness Health Renzo Gracie Fight Academy Fernanda Paronetto Daniel Gracie Nica

I worked today from one of the places I love the most, in Williamsburg, when two guys arrived and sat beside me, at the bar. I’m great at starting conversations with random strangers and this time, it lead me to learn more about Renzo Gracie Fight Academy NYC where world famous fight experts meet.

I always say that every cool girl, is half boy. Impossible not to agree, right!? While I was working today from Beco Bar, today I started a conversation with two guys.

These guys were Daniel Gracie and Nica. They start telling me about their Fight Academy just around the corner called Renzo Gracie Fight Academy.

I was crazy looking for a good place to go back to practicing Muay Thai, which I practiced for over 1 year back home. So, I’m definitely signing up with them later today for classes!

Their 1st academy was Founded by the famous Renzo Gracie 20 years ago. It opened right across from the Madison Square Garden where they still are today.

Many of their students were based in Brooklyn, so in 2011, they opened the Williamsburg location. There they have modalities like the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai, but they also have spaces dedicated for weight training. Classes are not only for adults, but also for kids!

It’s surely one of the best fighting academies in NY  and I knew about them from back home in Brazil. Famous guys like Anthony Bourdain and Guy Ritchie have trained there too!

Daniel told me one of the funniest stories that happened with him and Guy Ritchie.

He was always training with Guy, and one night Guy asked “Do you want to come with me tonight to my wife’s show?”, and Daniel answered “Yeah, of course!”.

They got into Guy’s car and when Daniel noticed, they were entering Madison Square Garden. So, he asked Guy, “Wow, your wife must be pretty famous to be singing here!”

Obviously, Guy thought that Daniel was joking and he called Renzo Gracie telling what had just happened. He handed over the phone so Daniel and Renzo could talk, when Renzo said, “Daniel, that is Guy Richie!”

Daniel had no idea that he was THE Guy Richie, even though he loves Guy’s work as a movie director. He turned in amazement and said, “No way! I love your work! I think you’re one of the best film directors in the World!” Hahaha…

Well, obviously they still train together and are close friends today.

Daniel and Nica, thank you so much for a great “bar talk” and see you guys soon on the fighting floor!

Oh! If you like UFC, on November 12th, the 1st UFC will be hosted in NYC at the Madison Square Garden. Their academy will have 5 students fighting the Championship!!

Named after the idea that peace begins with the source of one’s food, Peacefood Café was founded by Eric, an antiques dealer, and Peter, an interior designer. They believe that “the awareness of non-violence can be spread through feeding people with delicious vegan food,” and their dishes are definitely delectable!

Upon discovering the hidden gem tucked away from the busy University Place, I have already gone back with several of my friends. I especially recommends the Un-Chicken and Waffles, made with a special seitan only sold to vegan restaurants. It’s not found in grocery stores and it’s topped off with saccharine yet fresh agave syrup!

Peacefood Cafe’s first location opened in 2009, on the Upper West Side. Following its success, a second location was opened near Union Square, in 2013. Now, food lovers around New York City can enjoy a delicious vegan meal!

Hours:
Both locations are opened every day from 10am – 10pm.

Ronen Seri and Pamela Blackwell founded Blossom in an intimate and historic Chelsea townhouse, in 2005. Back then, vegan food was nowhere near as popular as it is today, and their actions were motivated by their love for animals and passion for entrepreneurship.

All of Blossom’s choices are not only heavenly, but are also creative in their use of soy, tofu, and seitan. They use these ingredients to recreate meat dishes, ensuring vegans do not miss out on the tastes and texture of bacon, eggs, or chicken. After your main course, I recommend getting the Tiramisu, which I think is even better than the non-vegan versions. Believe it or not!

Blossom has also opened as second location on Columbus, featuring a full bar with wine and beer. Most importantly, all of their ingredients are fresh, organic, and sourced from local farms and small distribution companies!

Pippin Vintage Jewelry is owned by Stephen and Rachel Cooper, whose first date was to an auction! Before opening the shop, Stephen was a vendor at the Chelsea Flea Markets and Rachel, an antique collector and teacher.

In the summer of 2006, the Coopers and their friends and families renovated what was previously a hidden carriage house down an alley. Pippin opened its doors to vintage lovers across New York City ever since!

What sets Pippin apart from most jewelry stores is that while others specialize in certain kinds of jewelry, Pippin has a whole spectrum. Their selection ranges from five dollar charms to engagement rings that cost thousands of dollars; the jewelry come from as early as the 1800’s and as current as the 1980’s.

As well, while most stores guard their jewelry behind glass encasements, Pippin displays their jewelry in creative ways. They change them up often, allowing customers to interact with the pieces.

We asked the store manager, Tatianni, her advice for vintage jewelry lovers.

“First of all, come here,” she laughs. “But seriously, with vintage jewelry, you just have to find something that speaks to you because vintage has such a range of style through the decades. Buying vintage is great because it has a lesser impact on our planet, and most things were made here.”

“The type of jewelry that is trending right now are unique stones like agates. Druzies are also very in vogue right now.”

Besides the jewelry on display, Pippin also has drawers upon drawers of earrings and cufflinks. Tatianni let me play around with the jewelry, and even helped me pick out a pair of clip-on earrings from the 1970’s.

Fun fact: most vintage earrings from the 1970’s happen to be clip-ons. So, you do not have to worry about whether you or your intended recipients have pierced ears or not!

Behind Pippin Vintage Jewelry, through a whimsically lit alley, you will find its sister store, Pippin Home.

It specializes in furniture and antiques carefully curated and bought from estate auctions in Western Massachusetts and Vermont.

Manager Jack advises those looking to furnish their homes to never be too anxious. He says:

“Space fills up quickly, so you want to be well thought out on your pieces. The advantage of buying vintage over mass produced is that vintage always maintains integrity and value.”

So the next time you’re in Chelsea or New York City, be sure to visit this treasure box of vintage jewelry and home goods!

The other day I was walking around Williamsburg and ran into Fê (read about her here), BTSNYC’s Founder! We spent a lovely afternoon together hunting cool pieces at Narnia Vintage. She couldn’t believe that little door on Driggs Avenue would offer such an amazing selection of Boho garments and accessories.

On the racks you can find designer labels like Oscar de la Renta, YSL, Moschino, Celine, Missoni, Stella and much more. You are probably thinking, but what about prices? The majority of items will fall into the $75 to $250 range.

Fê actually bought a gorgeous black leather skirt for $95! The brand? Oscar de la Renta!!! To die for!

Go for it!

We loooove everything related to Daybreaker! We’ve written about them countless times before. Their style and their concept: “a morning movement that will start your day off unlike anything else”. Expect everything related to Yoga, Dance, Wellness and Mischief!

They’re blasting off to the dance floor with moves that are outta this world. Earth Day’s around the corner, so they wanted to celebrate everything that’s ever walked, trotted, hopped and — most importantly — danced across this beautiful planet.

Then they thought, what would make it even more epic? An invite to the entire solar system, you say? Let’s. do. it.

On Wednesday, April 19th, they’re opening up the dance floor to every animal, mammal and alien-inspired costume our minds can think up, at their event called “INTERGALACTIC SAFARI: ANIMALS & ALIENS“.

And, since they’re bananas for DJ Sammy Bananas, he’ll be spinning the tunes to spin us into orbit. He’s also among the DJs For Climate Action, so it just feels right, ya know?

Plus, secret locale alert: They just locked in the Gilded Lily for this one, so buckle up and get ready to blast off in an oldie but goodie.

See you on the dance floor, and let’s inter-get-at-it at Daybreaker NYC…ohhh snap!

Wake up…and let’s dance! Tickets here!

Lastly, if you enjoy these types of healthy, fitness events to start off or end your say, take a look at this article we wrote about the upcoming New York City party scene!

Get ready, if you love the burn!

The Frick Collection is like a little oasis secluded from the business of Manhattan with its marvelous art and majestic garden spaces and sculptures. I would suggest going here to catch a break and for a little time travel into the early 1900s.”

We all know that New York City hosts some of the richest and most important museums in the world!

In addition, we know that it’s always tempting to visit all of them when you’re visiting the city.

That is, if you’re interested in art, of course.

The Frick Collection is surely one of these great spots.

And, it showcases one of the most important collections of Western fine art today.

Location: 1 East 70th Street, Upper East Side

The West Village is surely one of the top 3 restaurants we most love in Manhattan.

We are always there exploring new spots or just roaming around the beautiful streets.

It’s predominately a residential neighborhood, but the small shops, coffees and restaurants give it a lively vibe!

We love what the guys at The West Village Life doing to share the neighborhood’s beauty – picture are all theirs.

Location: Bleecker Street, West Village

To wrap up,  we asked them two fun questions:

What does NYC mean to both of you?

“I believe New York City means opportunity. Opportunity to feed off of the bustling energy and to learn from some of the most talented people in the world. It is a city where trends are started and dreams made. At the same time, one must stay weary and escape now and then and to catch a piece of mind and put it all into a perspective.

I think it is important to stay grounded and humbled. And, not to let so many of the temptations this city has to offer distract and interfere with one’s core values. Whatever the end-goal – why you came to this city – don’t even forget to take one day per week to yourself. And, just let loose and have fun.”

What would you girls tell a 1st timer in NY?

“I would share with a 1st timer in New York to take it all one step at a time. Also, to be more observant in order to learn rather than dive readily into action.

Also, I would tell him/her to enjoy the variety the city has to offer. From different districts to spectacular sites, like the views from the top of the Rockefeller Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Arts.

Finally, as mentioned above, don’t forget to go away now and then to catch your breath. Plus, let it all sink in to gain a better perspective on life and to prosper personally and in your career.”

Thank you Amra and Elma for being part of our Insider Interviews and sharing your favorite spots in NY!

Record the Mantra OM to the World at the Rubin Museum in Chelsea

Culture Music Rubin Museum of Art OM Lab Booth

How about recording your own voice saying the powerful mantra OM and having it combined with thousands of other voices that will be showcased in a remarkable exhibition in June!? This is an outstanding exhibition at the Rubin Museum of Art.

So cool, right? You can do that until May 8th!

This past week, I went to the Rubin Museum in Chelsea to check out the Om Lab that Michelle from City Wellness Collective told me about during a meeting.

They are having a several amazing exhibitions that we will soon post on our website, but this one we’d decided to share now!

The “OM Lab” is an installation located on the 6th Floor. If you study meditation or other practices and religions, you probably know that “OM” is referred to as: “The Universal Sound”.

As they explain it:

A Cosmic Vibration. ‘OM’ is believed to contain the power of all other mantras and the elemental sound of creation. Its three phonetic components (A-U-M) and ensuing silence cover the entire spectrum of the human vocal mechanism, from the throat to the lips. The mantra OM is considered the embodiment of the ultimate, omnipotent, and all-pervading essence of existence.

While I recorded my voice, the line shaking in the back (see video!) showed the vibration of my “OM”! Soooo cool!

All the voices recorded will be compiled into one single, universal voice. Then, they’ll be showcased at “The World Is Sound“, opening June 16, 2017.

After doing the recordings, you can walk around the floor to read the explanations about the power of this mantra. It goes back to the Big Bang and how it all correlates. It’s simply fantastic.

Run to the Rubin Museum in Chelsea to record your voice and be part of the unique project!

I’ve done my recording! Actually, 3 times already!
