I’m not a mom (yet), but I always have a pretty hard time buying stylish, good quality clothes to my friend’s kids, that don’t cost a fortune!!! A sustainable children’s brand would be a dream come true too, right?

Those chain brands are great with prices, but after 1, 2 washes, it practically dissolves inside the washing machine, hahaha! Plus, you’ll probably see other kids wearing the same thing as your baby…that that’s just a “blah”!

That said, the other day I was walking around Williamsburg, in Brooklyn and bumped into a super cute store called The Little Red Planet. And I have to say, I fell in love with it!

Everything there was amazing, carefully though about, unique, fun, stylish and still, ethically curated! Since it’s an independently owned brand, like we love, they don’t have huge amounts of each piece.

Here is how Mindi Smith, the Founder, explains her brand:

“The Little Red Planet offers exceptional design, style and quality from over 30 global children’s designers. We want to introduce to you a new concept in ethical children’s fashion for the mindfully stylish.

Our goal is to hand-select designers who slow manufacture their apparel, give back to charity, and/or use organic and sustainable materials whenever possible.

I work creatively with our designers to bring awareness to and support global children’s causes. Let’s teach our children together that less is more, quality counts, and we can make a positive change in the world we live in.”

How amazing is this, right?

I really enjoyed everything they do and stand for! And now, I can finally buy kids gifts that I just really l-o-v-e and would buy for my own (future) kids!

Now, since you’re in Williamsburg, you might just want to head a few blocks North to the Artists & Flees Market. You’ll find some pretty cool stuff there too!

And lastly, you’ve never been to NYC because you have small kids, or you’re considering moving here, but you’re skeptic? Take a look at the many reasons why NYC is great for kids!

Sweet Corner Bakeshop: A 2 Pound Chocolate Nutella Heart

Shop Specialties Sweet Corner Bakeshop 2 Pound Chocolate Nutella Heart

I cracked open New York’s most famous 2 pound chocolate Nutella heart at Sweet Corner Bakeshop, in the West Village, and got chocolate all over me. But, then again, it’s Nutella!

Subscribe You Tube Behind the Scenes NYC

Even before I moved to New York in April of 2015, I already had a favorite spot in the West Village I visited every time I visited to NYC. It’s not only loved by visitors, but also certainly, by locals.

So, today I have a surprise for you, so you might as well continue reading and watch the video above. Why? I cracked open their famous 2 pound chocolate Nutella heart.

The result? I had Nutella all over me. Hahaha!

Before we start, if you love New York, want to be posted and in tune with all the hidden secrets, new spots and the coolest brands, be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel.

Located on a street corner in the super trendy West Village, Sweet Corner Bakeshop is known for their Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie.

I don’t need to prove how good it is, because everyone who’s tried it, will agree!

But, in case you’ve never been to Sweet Corner Bakeshop, I want to tell you that it’s even won the title of “Best Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie” in town. It’s hard to properly describe and put into words, but I can guarantee that it’s definitely worth ALL the calories, lol!

Plus, it’s made with 4 kinds of chocolate and Sea Salt directly from France, perfectly balanced per cookie!

To pair the cookie, you might want to order their coffee made with beans from Honduras, Brazil and Columbia. The killer combo for any time of the year.

Oh! And that’s not the only highlight. This neighborhood gem is also known for having countless desserts overflowing with a super delicious and rich Nutella filling, like their red velvet Nutella cookie.

And, come on, who in the world does not like Nutella?

Sweet Corner’s founder, Rodolfo Gonçalves, is also known for being a spectacular cake designer, with a creativity many other professionals might envy. Since he was a very young boy, he was always drawing and expressing his artistic gift in school.

The result? Well, you might want to pass by sometime and check out their cake boutique window at the store. You’ll certainly be amazed with what he’s been creating with his team of experts. Some cakes can even take up to 2-3 days to be completely finished!

Plus, as we know, every man has a powerful partner beside him, right? In Rodolfo’s case, his wife, Patricia, is his right and left arm. Such a beautiful, kind, smart and determined woman that is responsible for big part of their well-deserved success.

I told Rodolfo that I’d heard him saying that his mom thinks he’s a super star, and I found that adorable! I mean, moms are moms, but I told him…that maybe she’s right! I heard a few rumors of a quite exciting project coming in early 2019 that might prove her statement! I can’t it share now…but do keep your antennas on! This will be pretty amazing!

I also asked him about a “big dream” he’s always had! Something about a F1 car!?

Well, it appears that, as a huge fan of Formula 1 race car driving, Rodolfo dreams to one day be able to design and bake a life sized replica cake of a Formula 1 race car. And….tchan tchan tchan tchan…this might happen earlier than we expect! So exciting!

Now, straight to the point! I had seen this surreal 2 pound chocolate Nutella heart they were selling during the 2018 Valentine’s Day. Oh, and it’s painted with this super beautiful edible gold paint! It’s went viral on Social Media, especially because only 300 special hearts were produced. Apparently, people were calling and begging to get at least one for them. Quite a commotion! So, I decided to head there, invade their kitchen and help create this huge piece of delicious art. And, of course, crack it open! As Rodolfo said:

“It’s the only heart you can break!”

I was able to do it all, get in action in the kitchen, but I had a bit of a hard time cracking it properly. And, it ends up that I got Nutella all over me and, with the help of Rodolfo, I even had it on my face! But then again, it’s Nutella, so it’s ok!

I’m a chocoholic and I do believe that chocolate is love, and so is Nutella. So, there’s no better gift, in my opinion, regardless of the time of the year. After all, Nutella needs no reason!

Keep your eyes open for the upcoming super star moment and also for the next Valentine’s Day, where they told me, they’ll have another big, viral surprise!

Tips By One Of The Top Hair Experts In NY, Rogerio Cavalcante

Shop Specialties Oribe Rodrigo Cavalcante

Taking care of your hair in a city like New York can be a challenge in many ways. One of the top hair experts in NY, Rogerio Cavalcante, shared with us some great tips about the products he’s been using!

Shop Specialties Oribe Rodrigo Cavalcante

The weather in New York City can go to extreme temperatures in the summer with long, humid days, and in the winter with the dry freezing air.

We all that taking care and keeping our hair healthy and strong can be quite hard.

So, we asked our friend and one of the top hair experts in NY, Rogerio Cavalcante to give us the secret to the perfect hair.

He told us everything about a fantastic brand called Oribe and pointed out his favorite picks.

Besides being dermatologist-tested, all products are formulated without parabens, sulfates or sodium chloride. It is color and keratin treatment safe. And still, it has UV protection for hair. The best? It’s vegan, cruelty-free and gluten-free.

We simply love it! Take a look below!

To start, a bit about the brand:

Oribe was founded by the Cuban-born American hairstylist, Oribe Canales. He’s very well-known for having worked with the biggest top models like Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista. Moreover, he’s been the artist behind several Fashion Week high-end brands, like Chanel and Thierry Mugler.

They have a vast line of products for different hair and treatments, so you’ll definitely find the right one for you.

Collections are:

  • Gold Lust
  • Beautiful Color
  • Signature
  • Magnificent Volume
  • Brilliance & Shine
  • Moisture & Control
  • Bright Blonde

Rogerio’s top picks:

Today, a hair treatment starts before washing the hair, while in the recent past, you’d apply an intensive care mask after showering, remember? This pre-shampoo called Gold Lust Pre-Shampoo Intensive Treatment is a miracle worker.

Description: Bring damaged locks back to life. This rejuvenating pre-shampoo treatment balm melts into hair, deeply moisturizing and repairing while protecting against harsh aggressors such as washing, styling and pollution. Softness, shine and strength are restored.

Shop Specialties Oribe Rodrigo Cavalcante Gold Lust

Benefits:

  • Protects hair from damage and moisture loss
  • Intensely hydrates and nourishes dry strands
  • Repairs existing damage while reducing future breakage and split ends
  • Revitalizes softness, shine, strength and elasticity
  • Restores moisture balance without weighing hair down
  • Helps to protect against free-radical and environmental damage

From the same Collection, called Gold Lust, he also recommends the Shampoo, Conditioner and Texturizing Spray. The Texturizing Spray to use after a day at the beach and swimming in the ocean, will be sure to restore your hair.

Now, if you’re looking for some amazing volume that leaves your hair light and natural, you can try the Volumista Mist Spray.

Or, you can try the Swept Up Volume Powder. It gives the hair volume and nice body. Just be careful not to use it all the time, since it leaves a bit of residue on the scalp. Use it for special occasions!

One of the coolest and most unique products, that definitely come in handy is the Airbrush. You use it to cover the small unwanted white hairs that shows up. They have it for all different hair colors.

For the very hot and humid NY summer days, you can try the Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray. This spray will certainly keep your hair fresh and “in control”! Be sure to spray it arm distance away.

Two of the unique products are the Shampoo and Conditioner in a can, instead of in a plastic recipient. The texture some out like a kind of mousse and the perfume is very good.

The Bald d’Or Heat Styling Shield is great to protect the hair before blow drying it or using any type of curlers! Benefits are countless, like:

  • Shields fragile strands from thermal damage
  • Leaves hair looking ultra-sleek and shiny
  • Fights frizz, flyaways and wiry greys
  • Makes hair easier to style and manage
  • Age-defying formula restores hair’s strength and density

And still, the Gold Hair Nourishing Oil is a great one to have in handy. As they explain:

“This luxuriously light oil absorbs instantly to restore hair to its prime. Infused with a rich blend of jasmine, edelweiss flower, lychee, sandalwood, cassis, bergamot and argan extracts, each protective drop penetrates the hair to deeply condition, strengthen and smooth—imparting intense nourishment and incredible shine. Works wonders on dry, damaged and color-treated hair…Liquid gold.”

If you have curly hair, you might want to try out the Surfcomber Tousled Texture Mousse. Once again, their description is just perfect:

“Sexy, surfed-in hair is no longer the domain of beachgoers in their tropical climes. Texturize your locks with this hydrating mousse that creates perfectly imperfect separation for that effortlessly tousled look.”

Lastly, they have some super great Kits. Check out their Holiday Travel Essentials Bag and the Holiday Gold Lust Collection.

Shop Specialties Oribe Rodrigo Cavalcante R And Co

In addition, besides Oribe – that is certainly one of Rogerio’s current favorite brands – he also recommends everyone to check out a brand called R+Co.

About R+Co:

“R+Co is a collective of some of the most forward-thinking, rule-bending hairstylists in the business. We are a think tank of top editorial and salon stylists and educators—with a combined century of hairdressing knowledge and experience—and we make sure that we have more than one viewpoint on everything we do.”

…and coolest part:

“Everything is formulated without parabens, sulfates (SLS or SLES), mineral oil and petrolatum. They are all vegetarian, cruelty-free, gluten-free and color-safe.”

Now, you can prepare yourself to face NYC’s harsh approaching winter, and keep in mind what to buy for the next summer!

Happy shopping!

You can find Rogerio, one of the top hair experts in NY at Maria Bonita Salon & Spa, in SoHo!

We Love Uncovering The NYC Subway Secrets

Curiosities City Secrets NYC Secret Subway FDR Tracks Waldorf Astoria

One of the things we love the most in New York City, is uncovering the NYC subway secrets. We compiled a few of what we most enjoyed!

Curiosities City Secrets NYC Secret Subway FDR Tracks Waldorf Astoria
Secret FDR Tracks beneath the Waldorf Astoria Hotel – ©Behind the Scenes NYC

There is just so much to talk about when the subject is: NYC subway secrets. It’s hard even to know where to start from.

To start, maybe we should go back and see how it all began:

“At 2:35 on the afternoon of October 27, 1904, New York City Mayor George McClellan takes the controls on the inaugural run of the city’s innovative new rapid transit system: the subway.

At 7 p.m. that evening, the subway opened to the general public, and more than 100,000 people paid a nickel each to take their first ride under Manhattan.

IRT service expanded to the Bronx in 1905, to Brooklyn in 1908 and to Queens in 1915.

Since 1968, the subway has been controlled by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA). The system now has 26 lines and 468 stations in operation; the longest line, the 8th Avenue “A” Express train, stretches more than 32 miles, from the northern tip of Manhattan to the far southeast corner of Queens.

Every day, some 4.5 million passengers take the subway in New York.”

~ via History.com

That said, we can still list some other peculiarities that we love about the NYC subway secrets:

1. Did you know that there are many abandoned platforms, like the one underneath 42nd street on the A/C/E line?

2.  The FDR Subway Track – Track 61 (picture above!), beneath the Waldorf Astoria Hotel is one of the most protected sites. FDR, stands for Franklin Delano Roosevelt and was used exclusively by him during his Presidency, due to his physical impairment, after contracting Polio. Even though we had to luck of going down there, today Track 61 is completely out of bounds for the public.

3. Wanderlust Projects, know for their illegal parties, that trespasses authorized areas, has organized an illegal party in an abandoned Subway Station. We love these guys!

4. Up through 2006, the New York City transit system operated an armored Money Train that took all money collected from fairs to a safe place at 370 Jay Street, Brooklyn. (You can see more at the New York Transit Museum).

5.  Joralemon Street, in Brooklyn Heights, has a fake townhouse, in the middle of several others colored ones, that hides a ventilation shaft for the Subway.

6. MTA Arts for Transit invited the sculpture Tom Otterness, in 2004, to create those beautiful little bronze creature spread through out the 14th Station and 8th Avenue. See more about his project below:

…and still:

7. The Knickerbocker Hotel was once a very acclaimed hotel, where names like F.Scott Fitzgerald and John D. Rockefeller used to “hang”. The forgotten white door at Track 1 on Times Square/42nd Street station.

8. When you get the Q Line from Dekalb into Manhattan (the abandoned Myrtle Ave station), you will be able to witness the Masstransiscope artwork by Bill Brand, installed in the year of 1980. This was once the is located in the abandoned Myrtle Ave station. Facing the front of the train, you need to sit on the left side seats.

9. We love the Underbelly Project, dating back a few years to 2009. See below where some of the most amazing works of art are secretly hidden.

10. Decommissioned in 1945, the famous City Hall Subway Station has maybe the most amazing architectural designs of all. How to see it? Stay on the 6 train after its last stop, at Brooklyn Bridge. It will continue running, and you’ll be able to see a bit from this station, when you pass by. Beware: it might get a little dark, since lights might go out at some point. Just, stay cool.

11. The Woolworth Building had an exclusive and direct access into the subway, for all the tenants. For an exclusive tour into the building, contact our experts!

12. The weird “finger-pointing” moment that every conductor does before opening the train’s doors, is simply for safety reasons, indicating that the train is completely stopped.

…finally:

13. Famous people have done fantastic works of “art” in the subway. Take a look at what Aaron from Underground_NYC has created through the dance moves of the famous Brazilian ballerina, Ingrid Silva:

Curiosities City Secrets NYC Secret Subway Ingrid Silva by Underground NYC
Ingrid Silva by Underground_NYC.

…there is just so much more, but we’ll leave it for a second article about the NYC subway secrets!

So, with all this, there are a few books and gadgets we’d like to recommend, if you’re into these secret subway stories and adventures like us:

1. Beneath the Streets: The Hidden Relics of New York’s Subway System
2. The City Beneath Us: Building the New York Subway
3. Lost in NYC: A Subway Adventure: A TOON Graphic (Toon Graphics) (for Kids)
4. Helvetica and the New York City Subway System: The True (Maybe) Story
5. The New York City Subway: The History of America’s Largest and Most Famous Subway System
6. My Subway Ride (for Kids)
7. The Race Underground: Boston, New York, and the Incredible Rivalry That Built America’s First Subway
8. Sterling Industries 138-094 Double Sided Wall Clock with Map of New York Subway
9. New York Puzzle Company – New York City Transit MTA Subway Kids – 36 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle (for Kids)
10. Glossy Paper Subway Gift Bags
11. and still, a New York City Subway Map Poster Print

And last, we hope you enjoyed this post, as much as we enjoyed doing it!

Yup, we are fascinated with uncovering the NYC subway secrets!

New York City is know for the myriad of creatives spread through out the 5 Boroughs. The list of names with these artists is extensive and we love meeting them!

One of the names you should keep in mind, is Grace Kang. She started her successful career as a fashion buyer and worked for the biggest retailers like Saks, Bloomingdale’s and Barney’s. But, her childhood passion for stationary eventually came back in full force. So, after receiving awards as “Buyer of the Year”, Grace was read for her next challenge.

Moreover, she opened her first Pink Olive store in 2007, in the East Village. Today, she has other 4 location: East Village, in Manhattan, 2 in Brooklyn in Williamsburg and Park Slope and a last location upstate NY in Cold Spring.

Through out this journey, Grace extended her business. She created Olive School that focuses in empowering other artists to build a strong brand and work to make their product ‘retail ready’. In addition, she also launched OliveBox – a monthly subscription service directed to the paper-lovers out there.

Pink Olive is a great place to buy every thing from baby gifts, distinctive letterpress cards, handmade jewelry, to original artwork, books and fabulous vintage finds.

“Pink Olive is more than an ordinary gift shop. It’s a creative place with a mission to inspire giving and beautiful living. Let your imagination sparkle!”

In fact, her team has “the eye” it takes to make the brand and the store stand out! So, you will definitely find the perfect gift for every occasion – baby showers, birthdays, pregnancy, love, marriage, holidays, and the “just because” moments!

Similarly, if you’re not NYC-based or if you don’t have time to go to one of Pink Olive’s neighborhood gift shop, but need something specific, you can purchase online!

Plus, if you decide to pass by the Brooklyn store, you can just extend your visit and grab a delicious coffee at Freehold, in Williamsburg!

In the East Village, we love Hi Collar, and in the West Village, try a charming secret spot called The Elk. And still, close to the Park Slope location, grab a coffee and a chocolate at The Chocolate Room.

Now, if you decide to explore Cold Spring, in upstate New York, let our experts help you out and plan the perfect weekend! On the other hand, for arrangements for Corporate travel, we can also assist you and your team.

Hours: Check online for store hours of each location.
