Tasting The Biggest Wine Bottle I’ve Ever Seen, at Macari Vineyards

Day Trips and Travels Macari Vineyards Wine Tasting

When people come to New York, they forget that their trip doesn’t to be confined within the 5 boroughs. The state of New York is beautiful and filled with amazing adventures. I explored the North Fork of Long Island, known for the countless vineyards and wineries, like Macari Vineyards!

Since I’m a huge wine lover and I decided to take you on a journey with me, to one of my favorite wineries, Macari Vineyards. This gorgeous family-owned, family-operated vineyard and winery is located just 1.5 – 2h from Manhattan and the trip itself is a beauty.

Based on the North Fork in the Long Island region, it’s known for being the home to countless great wineries spread throughout these lands.

I met with gorgeous Gabriella Macari at the winery and had not only a great tasting experience with her, but was given a complete tour of the property. And I mean, WOW! I was truly amazed with what the Macari family has built and the memorable experiences they are offering their guests.

So, let’s start from the beginning! Oh! And don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to our channel!!!

Their story goes way back to the 1930’s, 40’s when her grandfather, Joseph T. Marcari Sr. started producing wine in his basement located in Corona, Queens – with his dad and granddad.

Several years go by, business starts flourishing and in the 1960’s they decide to purchase a 500-acre property in Long Island – the same land they are currently on. This old potato farm took quite a few years to regenerate and go back to becoming super fertile.

But, after that happened, and they were able to start producing wine, business took off and never stopped!

Now, what to expect when you arrive at Macari Vineyards?

The first glance at the property is already breathtaking. Everything these is impeccably taken care of, to the smallest detail. Inside the main house, you’ll find the store with their numerous wines and different bottle sizes. There, you are also able to do some wine tasting, before deciding on which bottle to actually purchase and take home with you.

This house has a huge and beautiful porch. The perfect place to continue your tasting with a great prime view of the winery. It’s the perfect start to your experience at Macari.

After you’ve tasted their wines and paired them with a few yummy appetizers – like a great cheese and charcuterie platter – you can explore and tour the property. And, of course, continue your tasting.

Brooklyn Kura: Hand-Crafted Sake On Tap

Nightlife Bars Brooklyn Kura Industry City Sake On Tap

A well-crafted sake is surely indescribable. Brooklyn Kura is a brewery and tap room in Industry City, serving sake on tap! Quite special right?

I’m a huge sake lover and really enjoy trying sake not only in different spots of New York, but also when I travel.

When we were shooting two YouTube video about Industry City, one about Teressa Folgia’s hats and another one about 5 great spots to visit, Teressa introduced us to Brandon Doughan, the head brewer and co-founder of Brooklyn Kura.

The space was actually closed when we passed by, but Brandon was super polite to let us in, teach us about sake and show us how it’s done. And, yes, we did get a sneak peek into their brewing process and, of course, we had some sake!

Nightlife Bars Brooklyn Kura Industry City

One of the cool things about Brooklyn Kura is that their menu changes every now and then with different sakes that are sold by the glass and carafe.

Plus, they have a few delicious small dishes to pair with your choice of sake, like cheese, charcuterie and a few other delicious options. If you’re into tasting, it’s also a great place to stop by!

Plus, it’s a fantastic spot to host a private event or even a corporate gathering – and we can help you out!

If Industry City is a bit far for your to always head that way to grab your favorite sake bottle by Brooklyn Kura, you can find them in countless other spots.

Nightlife Bars Brooklyn Kura Industry City Sake On Tap

What is Sake?

With only 4 very simple ingredients – rice, water, yeast and koji – these talented brewers are able to extract the most amazing variation of aromas and flavors.

How it all started?

“During a chance meeting in Tokyo in 2013, Brian Polen and Brandon  discovered a shared passion for high quality sake. One glass led to two, which led to many more.

They took courses, traveled to Japan, apprenticed at breweries, and began to develop their own recipes. They sought out experts and absorbed all they could.

Before long, an idea began to form – a sake brewery in New York…”

What to expect?

“At Brooklyn Kura, we are committed to a new tradition of American Craft Sake. Building on more than 1,000 years of Japanese brewing history, we’re demystifying sake and making it more accessible. Our sake is brewed right here in New York City, hand-crafted with the highest quality ingredients.”

A Different Type of NYC Truck: Uprooted Flower Truck

Shop Specialties UpRooted Flower Truck Client

New York City is known for the countless food trucks roaming tirelessly around the city. You can find food trucks, ice cream trucks, juice trucks and even “fashion” trucks. But, Uprooted Flower Truck is the one and only, flower truck!

Uprooted describes themselves are “NYC’s florist on wheels”, which I think is pretty awesome. They are pioneers in launching this business and we have to agree that if you’re a pioneer in NY, you’ll most likely thrive!

It all started back in April of 2015, the exact month that I actually moved from my hometown São Paulo, Brazil to New York City!! What an exciting month! Hahaha!

Founders Ashley Custer and Kristin Heckler ran a super successful Kickstarter campaign, raised $15,000 and started their entrepreneurial path! And, what a journey!

New York is known for being the birth city of countless successful startups, but is quite tough having a brilliant idea no one has thought about, right?

When I met Ashley, back in February of 2016, she told me that her very first job was working at a flower shop, at the age of 14.  She majored in Criminal Justice at Temple University, but felt totally uninspired with the current social system. When she moved to NY with Kristen, her Co-Founder and Partner, she got back to working with flowers to brighten people’s lives – and also, her own.

On the other hand, Kristen, always had an entrepreneurial spirit. As her first job, she founded a local event planning business in her hometown: Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She studied Women’s Studies and Spanish at Duke University, but chose to follow a career as a Theater Director. That was actually what brought the duo to NYC in 2013. Kristin was going to attend her MFA at The New School. Today, she continues to self-produce theatre as well as working on Uprooted Flower Truck.

So, let’s talk about the truck!

The truck has a floral cooler, electrical system, work counters, and sink with hot water – surely a fully functional florist on wheels! Plus, there is no way to miss it, when it passes by or is parked somewhere around the city. It’s gorgeous and with beautiful bright colors!

Flower bouquets are prepared and sold in three sizes – “the studio”, “the loft”, and “the penthouse” ranging from $12 – $45. Pretty good price for NYC!!!

Are you organizing an event? Needing new ideas of how to “wow” your clients, your team or your friends & family can be quite exhausting. We certainly know how event planning can be crazy! Phiuf! So, besides being able to have all your flower arrangements organized by Uprooted Flower Truck, have you ever thought about actually “booking a truck”? They organize custom floral events including bouquet bars, flower crowns, & branded bloom giveaways.

And, of course, weddings! I love everything about wedding, but the flower decoration is something I always look forward to! Why? Well, I have friends in the flower business in Brazil and became passionate about it! Anyway, their arrangements are certainly the style I want for my own wedding. They’re extremely colorful, with exotic flowers, unique arrangements and that no one will ever have the same! So, talk to the girls to explain what you want for your wedding!

Now, if you’re the type that loves Doing It Yourself (DIY), the girls organize pretty cool workshops to learn how to make the perfect flower arrangements.

You’ll be sure to learn all the tips and tricks behind doing the perfect vase and bouquets. I had an “express” course when we shot the YouTube video and was amazed at little tricks that make all the difference on the final result!

And lastly, if you live in New York and love having you home weekly decorated with beautiful flowers, but like every true New Yorker, you have absolutely no time to refill your vases, take a look at the Uprooted Subscription! Besides saving money, it’ll save you tons of time and fill your home with gorgeous arrangements. As they explain:

“Treat yourself or one of your favorites with a gift that keeps blooming! Choose your delivery dates, tell us about your preferences & we’ll send you the freshest flowers in town!”

We are sure you’ll enjoy it!

If you want to really go “pro”, take a look at the post we wrote about the Flower School in NYC.

Hours & Locations: Uprooted Flower Truck hits the NYC streets Thursday through Sunday each week. Follow them on Instagram and Twitter for exact parking locations and other surprise pop-ups!

Lilia Ristorante: Coveted Italian Restaurant in Williamsburg

Italian cuisine is probably one of our top 3 picks and we love everything from the food to the culture behind it. We were thrilled when we heard about a new spot opening in Williamsburg, called Lilia.

But be prepared: You might experience a huge waiting time for “walk-ins”, so we recommend to have a reservation. And even so, it might be booked for over the full next month. Crazy!

To start, Missy Robbins, Head Chef & Owner, discovered her passion for Italian cuisine while working for 5 years as the Executive Chef at the renowned restaurant Spiaggia, in Chicago. After returning to NYC in 2008, she took the role of Executive Chef at the Michelin-starred restaurant A Voce.

So, after having gathered a remarkable experience at these fine dining restaurants, Missy decided to fly solo and open her own spot: Lilia Ristorante.

Lilia is located in the heart of Williamsburg and brought to the neighborhood the possibility of dining at an exquisite place with fantastic food. The Italian menu offers everything from hand-crafted pastas and wood-fired seafood, to great classic Italian cocktails and to-die-for desserts.

Moreover, the place is gorgeous. The high-ceiling and huge, tall windows with the rustic but, nonetheless, chic décor set the mood. Certainly a high-end Brooklyn style spot for people that enjoy a great high-end casual dining spot, but don’t feel like going into the city. Lilia was certainly a fantastic addition to the neighborhood.

We’ve been there countless times, so here are some of our favorites dishes.

For cocktails snacks, try:

  • Prosciutto, Balsamic Mustard, Parmigiano Butter
  • Housemade Mozzarella, Toasted Garlic Bread, Lemon, Bottarga

Antipasti, ask for:

  • Cauliflower, Spicy Soppressata, Sicilian Pesto, Majoram
  • Roasted Trumpet Mushrooms, Arugula, Balsamic, Sicilian Almonds
  • Whole Artichoke, Garlic, Mint, Parmigiano, Breadcrumbs
  • Castlefranco, Bacon, Tropea Onion, Parmigiano

If you enjoy fish, you can have:

  • Grilled Scallops, Walnuts, Yoghurt, Marjoram
  • Mussels, Herb Butter, Sea Salt
  • Crispy Shrimp, Gremolata, Parsley Aioli
  • Black Bass, Salsa Verde, Coal Roasted Yukon Gold Potatoes

For the pasta-lovers:

  • Spaghetti, Lemon, Pine Nuts, Parmigiano
  • Ricotta Gnocchi, Broccoli Pesto, Basil, Pistachios
  • Fettuccine, Spicy Lamb Sausage, Tomato Passato, Fennel Seed
  • Squash Filled Ravioli, Hazelnuts, Parmigiano, Sage

And, for the meat eaters:

  • Grilled Lamb Leg Steak, Roman Spices, Fennel, Celery

Now, we do recommend you leaving space to try their desserts. It’s actually hard to pick the best ones.

If you want to host a small event, they offer a semi-private area in the restaurant for up to 20 people. So, be sure to contact them for further information about the space.

In addition, you might also just want to pass by the Caffé. They have delicious and super fresh pastries and coffees. A great place for a pitstop while you’re in the neighborhood!

Enjoy this super cool Italian restaurant in Williamsburg.

Lastly, while in the hood, go shopping at these vintage shops, or check out the coolest music store.

Hours (Restaurant):
Monday – Friday: 5:30pm – 11pm
Saturday & Sunday: 5pm – 11pm

Hours (Caffé): Opens daily at 7am

My Sweet Brigadeiro Reminds Us How Much We Love Brazil

Anyway, the list of reasons to love Brazil can just go on forever. As we mentioned, the even sweeter reason are the famous brigadeiros.

Brigadeiro is a chocolate type of candy that is very traditional and with a very unique texture!

Brigadeiro Bree-gah-day-ro is Brazil’s favorite and most traditional sweet. Made with condensed milk, cocoa and butter, its cooking process requires love and patience. The result is a delicious round shape sweet with a unique and unforgettable consistency.

Two Brazilian expats in New York, Paula Barbosa and Christina Bahn launched My Sweet in 2011. The recipes and idea came through Paula. Her Grandma Lucila is the one that inspired and taught her how to perfectly bake them.

And, we have to agree. Everything we learn with Grandmas, are the best, right?

Speaking about, Paula uses only organic and very high quality ingredients, sourced through local producers. A great way to support the community, for sure! In addition, there are absolutely no preservatives and artificial ingredients, making them perfectly natural, and delicious!

Do you want to know who are a few of their most loyal customer are: Gisele Bündchen, Al Pacino, Andrea Dellal, Alessandra Ambrosio and Izabel Goulart!

So, it’s a definite pit stop when you are exploring the super artsy Bushwick neighborhood.

Lastly, you can also shop online if you aren’t able to go to the store. There, you’ll be able to discover all the amazing different flavors. Flavors like: cinnamon pecan, peanut lover, BW crunch, lavender, ginger, fresh mint, sea salt and countless others! We particularly love the traditional one, with only chocolate.

So, as we stated: We love Brazil!

This might be a great treat to have at any upcoming private event or dinner you might be organizing for friends and family. It’s also very popular to see it in weddings, so it can be a great option! If you need assistance to organize a Corporate event or meeting, our experts can cater to your needs.

Plus, you can also find them at Whole Foods Tribeca and Fresh Direct.

Martina Campos and Rafael Quintella are both Brazilians, born in São Paulo. They met in the gorgeous Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha through friends in common. However, the “flirting scene” took place in the Big Apple, where Rafael had been living for a couple of years.

In no time, Martina transferred to NY through the company that she worked for and moved in with Rafael. After running the New York Marathon a few months later, Rafael proposed at the finish line! Surely a surprise for her!

They immediately chose New York City to celebrate the wedding. This way, their friends and family could feel a little bit of all the excitement and affection that they both have for the city.

They wanted a party where they could show what “being a New Yorker” feels like. Therefore, they avoided all of the typical Brazilian wedding peculiarities like: the Bem-Casados – a typical sweet given to every guest at the end of the party, a Brazilian DJ, flowers scattered throughout the entire party. They decided to play around with the New York characteristics.

They left the church in a vintage yellow taxi cab, appetizers were all typical dishes such as oysters, dumplings and hotdogs and the furniture had a cool vintage style. Plus, the DJs were the same that were seen playing in the best nightclubs in town.

This is what they organized:

Thursday night the couple hosted their guests for drinks in the speakeasy bar in Chinatown, Apothéke. It’s one of those hidden spots that only after walking in, you realize how cool it is. Very NY-style.

On Friday, they had a formal cocktail at the rooftop of Hotel Americano. After all, the New York skyline is definitely one of the highlights of our beautiful city!

The wedding ceremony happend in the “Church of Saint Paul the Apostle”, located in the Upper West Side. After leaving the church, guests headed to the party in those touristy double deckers buses. It was unexpected and surely very fun!

Lastly, the party happened at Cedar Lake, a dance & art space in Chelsea. The neighborhood is known for being the home to the coolest art galleries in New York.

As we all know, Brazilians are definitely one of the liveliest people in wedding parties. So, everyone was there until sunrise, evidently.

NYC By The World-Famous Visionary Floral Artist, Jeff Leatham

Curiosities Insider Interviews Jeff Leatham

The World-Famous Visionary Floral Artist, Jeff Leatham, tell us his flower secrets in New York City! Your home will never be the same after reading this!

Curiosities Insider Interviews Jeff Leatham

We all know how hard – or painful – it can be to have beautiful flowers in your Home. Living in New York can make this “simple” chore, a challenge.

For some people, like our Founder, Fê Paronetto, their palms start sweating just with the thought of What, How, Where to buy Flowers. Don’t get it wrong, our Founder is crazy about flowers….but knows nothing about them! Ha!

Why? Well, lets analyze:

  1. Everyone living in New York is literally always busy running up and down around the city. It’s pretty easy to forget to water your adorable flowers in the morning or when you get home.
  2. New York has a cruel Winter that we only survive due to the massive heaters and has a hot, humid Summer that make us sleep practically embraced with the air conditioner. This makes it so hard to keep flowers alive and glistening.
  3. When you go to a flower shop – in a grocery or market, a boutique flower shop or one of these bigger stores in the Flower District – you never reeeeally know what to buy.
  4. Mixing and matching your arrangements? Ha! This can be a complicated task for sure, specially when you only know the names of flower like Roses and Lilacs.

Well, this week Fernanda interviewed the world-famous visionary floral artist, Jeff Leatham.

Curiosities Insider Interviews Jeff Leatham Black and White

Jeff is currently “the Artistic Director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V, in Paris and as well as the Artistic Director at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, where has been creating a sensation with his floral designs and installations since he first began working with flowers there 17 years ago.

Jeff’s work is a combination of his love for flowers and his passion for design. His creations are bold statements, using shape, color and simplicity to produce a dramatic effect. Breathtaking and unforgettable, Jeff’s flowers and design essentials are always integral to the setting, never merely a backdrop.

Known for his floral installations that are often compared to contemporary art, His continuous collaboration with international luxury brands has allowed him to present his work in several international design expositions around the world. Such Luxury Brand’s as Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bulgari, Swarovski Crystal, Givenchy, Ellie Saab, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Waterford Crystal, Dom Perignon, and Samsung have commissioned Leatham’s design signature style.”

He shared with us a few tips and ideas about which flowers to buy, how to arrange them in your home, what is a cool gift to give someone you love, where he gets his inspirations and much more!

As Cher (Yes! The Singer!) said, and we agree: “Jeff is not a florist, he is a genius.

“Despite of how touristy or well known this place is, the Flower District (on West 28th Street), is one of the places to go if you love flowers. You can find everything from fresh blooms, to faux flowers and never ending supplies.”

Location: The block of West 28th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues

“I’m known as the “King of Clean” and really believe in less is more. The basics of floral design is to separate blooms (ex: Roses to one side and Hydrangea to the other side). People are usually afraid of being judged, so make it clean, simple and chique, never mixing more than 3 types of flowers and never more that 3 monochromatic colors.”

“To gift someone with flowers is to invest in beautiful vases, so have something pretty to put flowers in. Which vases to buy? I always recommend 3 types: cylinder shaped, bubble bowl or a square shaped. Ideally it’s good to know the personality of the Home, but if you don’t know, keep it simple. My house always has white flowers. When I have a party I still go with the white flowers like Rose, Hydrangea, Casablanca Lily and/or Tuberose.”

Moreover, take a look at his Vase Collection for Waterford where you’ll find these 3 types of vases and a couple more.

Prices vary from $135 – $1,600.

Which flowers are more resistant?

Curiosities Insider Interviews Jeff Leatham Orchids

“When talking about ‘Which flowers are more resistant’, it’s hard to say because there are so many external things that can impact this answer. Orchid plants can be a good example, because you can travel and you don’t need to worry about watering them. So, a good tip is to drop 4 ice cubes and they can take care on their own.”

“When I travel to New York, my inspiration comes from several different sources like the galleries in Chelsea, MoMA, and the Gagosian Gallery. The Highline has a great variety of different flowers (even though it can get quite crowded), as does the Botanical Garden in Brooklyn which is gorgeous. Also, the art installations around the City, all the colors spread around NY, the architectural designs are amazing too. Plus, I also get lots of inspiration browsing through the Elle Decoration magazine. It has beautiful homes and amazing flowers. All these decoration/home magazines definitely have great ideas.”

In addition, Jeff has also written a few books, this the one below, published by the Rizzoli. It’s named “Jeff Leatham: Visionary Floral Art and Design“.
