Curiosities Our Bucket Lists Carroll Gardens June
June Wine Bar, in Carroll Gardens

Welcome to the city that never sleeps! New York City is truly a place like no other, with an endless array of things to see and do.

After exploring the well-known touristy spots, from the bright lights of Times Square, attending the best Broadway shows and witnessing some of the best musical and theatrical performances in the world….be sure to get tickets to the off-Broadway theaters like Cherry Lane, in the West Village, the longest continuously running Off-Broadway theater.

You should also start exploring to the quiet streets of Brooklyn where or the most amazing local vendors, hidden bars and local gems are.

Be sure to explore Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill with so many local stores, coffee shops and super hype wine bars like June, on 231 Court Street – loved by locals!

Also, after taking a stroll through Central Park (that I have to say that should AWAYS be explored, regardless of the tourists) or grabbing a bite to eat in one of the trendy neighborhoods like SoHo or the Upper West Side, why not head up to explore Harlem?

We love having lunch or dinner at Seasoned Vegan, one of the best vegan restaurants in NYC.

I’ve taken MOST the meat-eating friends there and they can’t get enough of all the delicious dishes – and always want to go back again. I promise it’s going to surprise you!

If you decide to extend the day a bit more…Harlem is known for some of the most famous and traditional Jazz spots. One of the hidden spots we love is Room 623 – Harlem’s Speakeasy Jazz Club.

Or head down to spots in Manhattan love by locals and jazz lovers like Smalls, Blue Note and the hidden like spot: Zinc!

And don’t forget to explore the incredible street art and live music scene that thrives in this bustling city. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, there is always something new to discover in New York City.

Attend unique events

Show at Irving Plaza in New York City

Looking for something out of the ordinary to do this weekend? Why not attend a unique event and discover some hidden gems?

Jazz clubs are the perfect place to unwind and explore some new sounds, while also enjoying a night on the town (like we just mentioned above).

Or, if Halloween is your jam, check out the annual Halloween parade in Greenwich Village, but after head to Blood Manor: New York’s Premier Haunted Attraction. You never know what kind of creative costumes or spooky surprises you’ll encounter along the way!

Exploring unique events can add a little excitement to your routine and give you the opportunity to discover something new.

So go ahead, grab some friends, and try something different this weekend. Be sure to check out venues like the Irving Plaza, or the Metropolitan Museum of Art for some interesting and offbeat events they host during the year (but you need to stay tuned to be sure to not to miss them).

For some Brooklyn spots, be sure to go to Bushwick. There you can explore places like The Keep NYC – a rustic vintage lounge with live music, psychic readings and burlesque performers; or Elsewhere – a huge venue featuring several spaces (including a roof terrace) with live music and DJ nights.

Plus, you’ll get the chance to explore some of New York City’s gems that are often overlooked.

But, after checking off these touristy spots, be sure to head to attractions like Domino Park in Williamsburg Brooklyn or the underrated The Met Cloisters in Inwood (at the very tip of Manhattan). They are a branch of the Metropolitan, showcasing medieval art in a French monastery overlooking the Hudson – the sunset is priceless!

And, of course, head upstate! The Hudson Valley is super exciting and full of incredible outdoor experiences. If you enjoy hiking, canoeing, biking, or just finding a remote spot with no visitors for a delicious picnic, plan your trip.

Here is a small description on what to expect from this tour:

The abandoned Ellis Island Hospital complex—once the standard for United States medical care (and later transformed to the FBI headquarters when the island served as a detention center)—has been left to decay for nearly 60 years.

Now, our amazing partners is bringing you behind-the-scenes for a unique exploration of the abandoned facility.

On this experience, you’ll visit the contagious disease wards and the autopsy rooms. And still, have exclusive access to places usually closed to the public.

While Ellis Island has become one of New York City’s top tourist attractions, drawing over two million visitors per year, the 22-building South Side hospital complex is hidden in plain sight. It’s just to the left of disembarking passengers headed towards the Great Hall…

Looking at its desolate, skeletal frame, it’s difficult to imagine the backstory as one of the largest public health undertakings in American history.

Join us for our upcoming hard hat tour, guided by a Save Ellis Island docent. We’ll uncover its many, buried secrets.”

OMG!!! So cool, right? Save Ellis Island has their own tour. But, this one has a few extra secrets, as we mentioned in the beginning. We do access some pretty sweet out of bound spots to the public!

This is one of the tours we love the most! But, then again, we are always psyched about exploring abandoned spots that have groundbreaking history!

You’ll learn the most curious facts and have opportunity to shoot several “Instagram worthy” pictures. They will leave your followers in “awe” and might even go viral!

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS:

How You Can Manage Your Weight During Your NYC Trip

People running on a sunny day in Central Park in Manhattan, New York City

When traveling, we already recommend having the best time and enjoying every moment, but today we will talk about how you can manage your weight during your NYC trip!

People running on a sunny day in Central Park in Manhattan, New York City

New York City is a dream destination for many and the number of visitors it attracts clearly reflects that. In 2022, the city saw a 71% increase in tourism since 2021 with 56 million travelers paying a visit to the Big Apple.

Even more tourists are expected in 2023—around a whopping 62 million.

So, if you’re one of the many planning to take a trip to NYC, you’ll probably be excited to try out all sorts of experiences, including the dining scene, but you might be concerned about your weight.

The good news is that you don’t need to sacrifice your vacation time by spending it at the gym daily or skipping some food spots you want to stop by.

Here’s how you can manage your weight during your trip and still make the most out of your visit to New York:

Explore the city on foot

NYC’s most iconic elements are its yellow taxis and subway, which are the usual ways tourists and residents alike get around.

Though taking public transportation is sometimes necessary, you’ll find that one of the best ways to explore the area around you is by walking; in fact, NYC is one of the most walkable cities in America.

Not many have cars and opt to take public transportation for long distances.

With walking, not only will you have more control over which nearby places you want to visit, but you’ll also be benefiting from the exercise and boosting your fitness and health.

An increase in your daily step count can lower your risk of premature death, heart disease, and cancer. Brisk walking—even in short bursts—further amps those benefits.

That additional calorie burn can also prevent more weight gain during your trip when you’ll most likely eat a lot.

Try walking to your destinations if they aren’t too far and use that opportunity to explore places like Little Islands, Central Park, South Seaport or other iconic locations and neighborhoods.

Avoid binging and then depriving yourself

NYC is a culinary hotspot known for its diverse range of cuisines worldwide that can be found in street food stalls, delis, pizzerias, bakeries, and high-end restaurants.

These food offerings can tempt you to let loose during your NYC vacation, but sometimes you’ll feel guilty later on and deprive yourself of food.

One of the most common weight loss mistakes people make is underestimating their portion sizes, which can prompt people to overeat.

Especially when eating out, most people underestimate their portions by as much as 46%. After pigging out, you might feel the urge to deprive yourself and not eat as much or as often.

You then feel uncomfortable and tired— leaving you susceptible to “unplanned” food choices later, and the cycle continues.

You’ll probably not be bringing measuring cups to every dining spot in NYC, but you can make a rough estimate using your hand.

For example, a one-ounce serving is around the size of your thumb, and a cup is roughly as big as your fist. If you can’t control portions, stick to a single serving before ordering or buying more food.

Get enough sleep

NYC is famously dubbed the “City that Never Sleeps,” but that doesn’t mean you should skimp on your shut-eye too.

You might want to take advantage of the excitement of the city that never seems to sleep, but that won’t do you any favors if you’re trying to watch your weight.

Sleep deprivation impacts weight loss and management in various ways. Staying in bed for less time was shown to lessen the amount of fat loss for those on a calorie restriction.

Disturbed sleeping patterns also lead to increased energy intake, mainly through snacking on fat and carb-rich foods.

If you plan your days more efficiently, you don’t need to lose sleep to maximize your NYC trip. Have a general itinerary for things you want to do each day to budget your time efficiently.

Whether visiting the MoMA, stopping by Liberty Island, or watching a Broadway show, planning your activities can help you schedule your time to ensure you can get home and get enough sleep without removing things from your to-do list.

New York City is easily one of the most common tourist spots in the United States, with the city seeing 66.6 million visitors which generated $47.4 billion in spending in 2019 alone, as the Office of State Comptroller reported.

It’s also a hot spot for movie filming – it’s believed a whopping 300 movies were filmed in NYC in both 2015 and 2016, for example.

That comes as no surprise, as the city is the perfect backdrop for nearly every genre out there.

While we’re not about to list hundreds of movies, let’s take a look at some of the most iconic movie sets you should visit if you find yourself in The Big Apple.

Ghostbusters (1984) and the New York Library

After getting a call and their first job from the library administrator, the Ghostbusters arrived at the New York Library to take care of a ghost that apparently had an affinity for books during her life.

The library also shows up in Ghostbusters: The Video Game and brings the characters back between the shelves to battle Book Bats and a Book Golem.

In the game, the library had at least 12 bodies beneath the structure and a sub-basement along with a few secret rooms. While these rooms (and the bodies underneath!) don’t actually exist, you can visit the library itself.

CNN mentions that you might even be able to get a free book!

King Kong (2005) and Gapstow Bridge in Central Park

Few films did for NYC what the original King Kong did, and the subsequent exposure in pop culture cements the locations.

It even spawned the 2005 game Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie, released on Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PS2, and PC, which shows plenty of the iconic places in NYC.

The giant ape also features in some of the Ladbrokes online slot games, including Kong the 8th Wonder of the World and Kong’s Temple.

Both have his image featured heavily, with the first title also seeing him sit atop the Empire State Building. The Empire State Building also shows up in other games, including SimCity. So, of course, it’s quite a well-known location thanks to movies and games.

The Gapstow Bridge is another location that quite a few filmmakers have used.

In King Kong, the bridge is used as a backdrop for a heartwarming scene between Kong and Ann as they skate over the frozen lake before tragedy strikes.

If you want to see the bridge for yourself (frozen lake or not), head over to the southeast corner of Central Park.

Night at the Museum (2006) and the American Museum of Natural History

Of course, the movie Night at the Museum was not filmed in the museum itself but was based on the museum and its exhibits.

The external shots, however, were of the museum itself with permission.

If you go, you can see the very same exhibits including the T-Rex (although it probably won’t want to play fetch with a giant bone. Sorry!).

Of course, there are some new exhibits as well, including the Sharks Exhibition where you can learn about these marine terrors and even buy some souvenir fossils to take home.

New York City has plenty to offer – from great food to museums dedicated to nearly everything! It’s hard to be bored here.

If you’re a movie buff who wants to see some of the most iconic movie sets from your favorite movies, come on down!

Any fan of the hit sitcom Friends will immediately sing along to these lines and find themselves clapping reflexively.

Years after its ten-year run, Friends continues to strike a chord among old fans and generations of new ones.

Although the series was filmed on a sound stage in California, the show will forever be associated with New York, where all the misadventures took place.

If you are planning a trip to New York and want a one-of-a-kind tour, why not dedicate a day to crafting your itinerary around some famous Friends locations to experience the city through your favorite characters’ shoes.

Enjoy our tips below to the Ultimate Guide to Planning Your ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S.’ Tour in NYC and have fun!

The one with the fountain

While singing those lyrics, you might have pictured a certain fountain with the whole cast playfully splashing around in their coordinated black and white outfits in the opening credits.

Although this was also shot on the Warner Bros back lot, debates abound on whether it is based on the Cherry Hill Fountain in Central Park or the Pulitzer Fountain in Midtown West’s Grand Army Plaza.

While you can choose which of these locations you prefer, feel free to dance around as much as you want as it’s a public space, after all. Just be sure that you don’t jump in!

Although the memorable orange couch won’t be stationed in front of the fountain as in the credits, you can still sit around, people watch, and perhaps even whip a guitar out and belt out ‘Smelly Cat’ à la Phoebe Buffay.

The one with the apartment building

Much of the Friends action takes place on the corner of Grove and Bedford Street in the West Village. It’s better known as the destination of the kitschy Central Perk coffee shop as well as majority of the clique’s apartments.

This little corner destination is also a spot on the NYC TV & Movie Tour, but sadly, you’ll have to use your imagination to visualize the Central Perk logo.

Instead, you can actually walk into the Little Owl restaurant in its place and have a cup of coffee or even a full meal. Don’t expect Gunther to serve you – just pretend you’re at your own cozy little neighborhood joint and enjoy the distant chatter.

The one with the bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge and Friends have inevitably become intertwined because of how prominently it is featured on the show – including many scenes of the gang driving along it.

Just last year, fans of the series congregated on the Brooklyn Bridge for a special reunion called the “Friends 25th Vegas Takeover” with Lego replicas of its sets, live performances, and an appearance of Ross’s former pet monkey, Marcel.

The landmark is often used to promote merchandise from the series and has been featured on traditional games like Scene It! and Trivial Pursuit.

The iconic bridge is still being used to promote Friends across digital mediums with a dedicated title among the selection of slot games on Cheeky Bingo putting the Brooklyn Bridge front and center.

This not only shows how Friends is reaching new fans, but how the Brooklyn Bridge has come to symbolize the show. Fans who want a tangible memento of this image can look into the array of merchandise, as the collectible box sets feature the main cast in front of the iconic bridge.

Friends has become a pop culture phenomenon and its memory continues to live on 25 years later.

As a reunion is in the pipeline and the series and all related things are within arm’s reach, all you have to do is plan your trip. No matter when you schedule your visit, know that these places will be there for you!

Also known as the Stephen A. Schwarzman building, has been not only the scene of countless blockbuster movies but, on the other hand, it’s a sacred refuge for New Yorkers that need time off from the noise.

#3 The Empire State Building

It’s great and definitely a place to visit if you never have before. But, we do love the Top of the Rock Observation Deck at the Rockefeller Center. Its 360º view is unbeatable.

#4 NY City Hall

Getting married in New York City is the dream of countless brides and brides-to-be out there, right? Well, to make it right – if you do make your dream come true – is go get your Marriage License at New York’s City Hall! So Carrie Bradshaw style…!

#5  Carry Bradshaw’s Apartment

…Which, we can’t forget when talking about the City of Dreams (and fashion, and art, and gastronomy…and…)! Well, it’s the best city. So, you must visit Carry Bradshaw’s apartment in the West Village – or just Village for the locals! 66 Perry Street.

#6 Foley Square

Located right in front of the famous New York County Supreme Court. Remember Harvey Spector and Mike Ross in the series Suits? We miss these guys…

#7 East Village

One of our favorite neighborhoods! It’s crazy (but we’re thankful), how tourists have not yet discovered how awesome the East Village area is! If you’re a food enthusiast, this area a great area to explore countless local gems!

#8 Little Italy

Mangia Che Ti Fa Benne! Literally, it translates to “Eat that it will make you well!”. Italians believe in the power of food and in the beauty of the entire food experience! And, Little Italy will welcome you into this mind set! Be sure to stop at any of the famous restaurants to enjoy pasta or pizza, with a nice glass of wine!

#9 Chinatown

Probably one of the most underrated areas in Manhattan. I guess, people just don’t know their way around the neighborhood, but those that do have a great time exploring speakeasy bars, amazing local restaurants like Buddha Bodai, creative cuisines…and some even venture into those small underground “spas” for a good foot massage.

#10 Soho

Not on the top of our list, but if you’re an Influencer, or aspiring Influencer, the area is the mecca for Instagram Fashion Photography. But yes, SoHo’s cobblestone streets are truly a beautiful background.

#11 Brooklyn Bridge

Probably the most famous Bridge in the world, and also one of the most unique for sure! It’s definitely a touristy attraction overflowing with visitors, locals bike riding their way across the bridge for work, local merchants selling small gifts…it’s a real confusion, hahaha! But, crossing the Brooklyn Bridge always gives me some of the most amazing feelings and you’re really able to experience New York City’s energy.

#12 Flatiron Building

Another great spot for photographers and visitors is the Flatiron Building. Its architecture is amazing, and it has a big history. Built in 1902, this magnificent building is located between 5th Avenue and Broadway. The neighborhood has become very popular and the pedestrian paths in front of the building as well as the nearby Madison Square Park are ideal scenery for photos.

#13 Brooklyn Wall Art

Graffiti is a huge deal in New York and has been relatively European, but not anymore. Lots of areas of Brooklyn have artistic walls, which make for great photography. Williamsburg, for example, has plenty of vivid graffiti murals that are unique and signed by famous names like Eduardo Kobra, or just Kobra! It’s time to discover the real New York. If you have time, go get lost in Bushwick (only a few subway stops from Williamsburg, also in Brooklyn), also known for The Bushwick Collective with its graffiti and street arts.

#14 Greenwich Village

One of the most beautiful places, the Greenwich Village, is known for its beautiful buildings, its red bricks or brownstones, and the different shades of green that exist in every corner of the area. Also, it boasts plenty of peace and quiet from the bustling city. The area is known for being a historic place in the fight for the LGBTQ+ rights and where the famous Stonewall Riot happened in 1969, kickstarting this movement.

#15 Liberty Island

Now this is surely a photographer’s dream location (but not a paradise for locals running away from the flocking tourists. Liberty Island is a small, uninhabited island, which hosts our beautiful and powerful Lady Liberty (aka Statue of Liberty).

The statue is 93 meters high and the seven rays of the crown represent the seven seas and seven continents. It takes about an hour to see it all and to take all the photos you’ll want – a bit longer if you really want to capture the hum of the city.

The view of Manhattan’s skyline, from the island, is unique and truly unforgettable – it’s a must for any new tourist to the city. If you do not want to get off the ferry boat, you might want to take the Staten Island Ferry that is a free option and you can see the Statue. Unless…you want to go inside the statue where it costs around $18.

It’s the true heart of NYC and a place that you will always remember visiting. The city itself is home to so much beauty so it’s always best to get around walking and exploring all neighborhoods. Leave the Ubers for nighttime when you decide to slip into those heals (or pretty shoes)!
