Have you ever thought of seeing the best of New York City by motorcycle? Let us give you a few pointers on how this could be an amazing experience!

Curiosities City Secrets Seeing the Best of New York City By Motorcycle Sandra Frey Cropped

New York City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in America, attracting more than 60 million guests each year. This, thanks to its world-famous landmarks, eclectic cuisine, and unique culture.

If you’re looking for something other than the typical take on the NYC experience, ditch the buses and walking tours! They are quite touristy anyway… Instead experience the best of New York City by motorcycle.

Exploring by bike makes it easy to see parts of the city that other tourists rarely get to enjoy, and it also makes it easy to snap pictures, grab some street food, or simply take in the view.

Exploring Landmarks Downtown

Downtown, you can find many of the major landmarks of Manhattan, including the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, and Freedom Tower. You can also explore more hole-in-the-wall places, including small restaurants and specialty shops in Chinatown, Little Italy and the up and coming, South Seaport.

You can also see the filming locations of certain famous movies, including the Ghostbuster Firehouse, the Tiffany & Co. flagship store from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and many more. For a thrilling ride, you can cruise through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, the longest continuous underwater road in the U.S.

Experience Uptown Scenery

Uptown is known for its stadiums, like the famous Yankee Stadium, and museums through out the artsy Museum Mile. But, primarily tourists head up to see the scenery.

From the perspective of an automatic motorcycle, you can get some of the best possible views driving up the West Side Highway along the Hudson River. You might also see the palisades that rise over five hundred feet above, cross the George Washington Bridge, head up to the Medieval inspired MET Cloisters and wander through the less well known northern areas of Central Park.

Tour Midtown Monuments

Midtown Manhattan is home to the Empire State Building, Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, and other impressive bastions of culture and architecture.

Are you looking for something a little bit more out of the ordinary? You can visit sites such as the mysterious Rose Hill Historic House, the historic C.O. Bigelow Apothecary, or the quirky Chancellor Robert R. Livingston Masonic Library.

You’re looking to avoid the crowds and experience New York City from a unique angle? So, simply tour the city by motorcycle. Traveling by bike makes it easy to get around. You’ll be able to find all of the hidden gems that NYC has to offer.

Whether you’re riding through the streets of downtown New York, enjoying the sights of midtown, or exploring the refined uptown area, touring New York City by motorbike gives you a unique and exhilarating look at the city.

#2 Screenshot the subway map before you get onto the subway

Curiosities Our Bucket List 10 Life Saving Hacks To Travel Around NYC Subway APP Joshua Newton

Some subway cars aren’t yet updated to show the next upcoming stops/transfers so use your phone to navigate where to get off.

You can catch a cellphone signal in between some stops, but play it safe with having it already on your phone. This way, you don’t get lost or have to hover over someone to check the subway car map.

And still, if you’re more into tech-hacks, just download an APP called “New York Subway MTA MAP”. It’s works with no wifi too!

#3 Bring a selfie stick

Curiosities Our Bucket List 10 Life Saving Hacks To Travel Around NYC DJI Osmo Mobile

It may seem like such a tourist thing to do, but if you don’t want to bother a busy New Yorker to take your picture, then this is the best way to snap a quick pic!

Which one we recommend? Try the one from DJI, named Osmo Mobile 2.

Also, for inspiration, follow Fomofeed to find all the cool free NYC instagram-worthy shots.

#4 Pack comfortable walking shoes

10 Life Saving Hacks To Travel Around NYC Fort Tyron Park

With so many great walking spots in NYC, you will need a good pair of shoes that won’t hurt your feet after a few miles.

Some favorite (and free) walking spots include Fort Tyron Park, FDR Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island, and the gorgeous pink Williamsburg Bridge, that has been featured in countless movies!

If you’re into adventure, you might want to explore the beauty of upstate New York or our Behind the Scenes Tour of the Abandoned Ellis Island Hospital! So scary and curious!

#5 Use travel APPs to make your life easier and save some cash

Curiosities Our Bucket List 10 Life Saving Hacks To Travel Around NYC Bike Chris Barbalis

Here’s a list that may come in handy when traveling around NYC.

  1. Check out Yelp for check in discounts to restaurants around the city and Open Table to make a quick reservation.
  2. Use Juno, Lyft or Uber to share rides and get around the city, or the Citibike APP if you prefer biking around.
  3. Download Splitwise to make it easier to track and split expenses amongst your travel party.
  4. Check out the HotelTonight APP for exclusive hotel deals.

#6 Carry a portable phone charger

10 Life Saving Hacks To Travel Around NYC Mophie External Battery

This is crucial, especially because with pictures and social media, your battery will drain in no time. You’ll be out and about all day in New York, so be sure you buy a phone charger so you stay plugged in all day – most will be under $30 and well worth it!

But we love the Mophie products, even though they are a bit more expensive. They have a (RED) Collection where “a portion of the proceeds from every (PRODUCT)RED™ purchase will go to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa”.

#7 Beware of street food

10 Life Saving Hacks To Travel Around NYC The Halal Guys

NYC is well-known for their delicious hot dog stands and roasted peanuts, but be careful with where you choose to eat! You might have a bad time during your trip if you pick the wrong one!

Find a food cart that has a long line or keep an eye out for the most trusted food cart, like the traditional “The Halal Guys”. We love them, and so does every other New Yorker in town.

You can find them at West 53rd Street corner with 6th Avenue, and a few other spots in the city!

#8 Save money on Broadway tickets

Curiosities Our Bucket List 10 Life Saving Hacks To Travel Around NYC Hamilton Broadway

If you have time to spare, you can find steeply discounted Broadway show tickets the day of at the big red TKTS booth in Times Square, South Street Seaport, Lincoln Center and Downtown Brooklyn. Check their website for queue hours.

Want another secret to the currently most coveted show on Broadway: Hamilton!? They have an APP called “Hamilton – The Official App” where, twice a day, they have a lottery giving out tickets for $10/each and you can buy up to 2! Note: Tickets for the show starts at $199, and skyrocket to over $800 for the premium seats.

Oh! And if you want the true “behind the scenes experience”, you might want to have dinner with 2 cast members from Hamilton before the show, watch the show from the best seats, then go back stage to meet the entire cast! How? See here!

Not a fan of Hamilton? Don’t worry! We have this experience for all Broadway show!

#9 – Don’t fall for street scammers/hustlers

Curiosities Our Bucket List 10 Life Saving Hacks To Travel Around NYC Matteo Catanese

NYC will always have people hustling outside on the streets so beware of the scam! You may wind up with fake tickets, blank DVDS or something else counterfeit that you just paid for.

Just go straight to the official website or authorized resellers to purchase and be safe.

#10 Research pay what you wish museum days

Curiosities Our Bucket List 10 Life Saving Hacks To Travel Around NYC Free Museums Frick Collection

Some of the major museums in NYC have donation based nights that can save you some serious cash!

The 9/11 Museum, Bronx Zoo, New Museum, and the Frick Collection all have weekly donation based entrance fee hours to name a few.

Plus, many have specific days/hours with FREE entrance.

The list can go on, but these are probably the top 10 lifesaving hacks to travel around NYC!

We are always looking for and exploring unique properties in upstate New York to share with you. Cedar Lakes Estate is certainly on the top of our list.

We also know that many people aren’t really sure where to go or what to do during the harsh New York winter, so we decided to help out!

This past weekend, we packed our bags and headed upstate to stay at a place called Cedar Lakes Estate. We’ve been following closely experiences they’ve been creating for guests and couldn’t wait anymore to go and explore!

Located in the heart of our gorgeous Hudson Valley, Cedar Lakes Estate’s story is quite special.

To start, the property is family owned. A few years back, the sisters Stephanie and Lisa Karvellas, that have countless unforgettable childhood memories at the Estate, decided to share the property not only with friends, but with outside guests.

They started working and organizing everything, building new rooms and cabins and renovating what needed a fresh look. In no time, they got so much organic press that not only people started reaching out, but also super young companies like Uber and Google decided to host team gatherings and activities during the year.

Below a short video of our experience:

The property is really something! You’ll be able to indulge in their 500 acres with 2 lakes, 2 pools, miles of hiking trails, boats, tennis, basketball courts, football fields, ziplines, and the BLOB.

Lets talk about their accommodations!

They have rooms for every style, pocket and need!

The Bluebird Cottage and the Lakeside Cottage are great for a complete experience. These cottages boast with spacious formats, king-size beds and private patios. Plus, each one has its own cool amenities like full modern kitchen, heated stone floors, fireplace, living room and/or dining area.

In addition, the 10 Sleepy Pine Cottages are under a beautiful cluster of pine trees! It offers one queen or two full size beds, rain shower, Nespresso machine and mini bar. Perfect in size.

Furthermore, the Poolside Cabana is fully equipped with a fireplace, washer/dryer, with access to pool area, patio, outdoor wet bar and refrigerator, gazebo (extra bathroom in gazebo) and it’s also pet-friendly!

The Garden Suite is perfect for families, or for the more demanding couples. It has a fully equipped din-in kitchen, a fireplace with sitting area and a beautiful, large bathroom.

And, their option for Glamping (glamour camping), is called Campstyle. This communal house can host up to 43 people common room seating areas and a kitchen. Don’t worry, the bathrooms are just as nice as the other options above, and also offer complimentary toiletries (shampoo, conditioner and body wash).

Finally, the Rustic Cabins are for people that really have camp roots with bunk beds, ceiling fans and a communal bathhouse. But, they offer fresh linens and towels!

Now, not many people know or can even imagine how many activities are available at properties upstate.

Cedar Lakes Estate is perfect not only in the summer time, but also during winter.

As they explain:

“Guests have full access to all that the grounds has to offer, including the use of the lakes, pools, hiking and biking trails, bonfire pits, tennis and basketball courts. With outdoor activities like The Blob, “drive in” movies under the stars, and guided yoga classes, we have everything needed for a memorable and refreshing getaway.”

Super cool right?

So if you’re the adventurer type, sporty-type or lets-chill-type, they have it all. Swimming, fishing, countless sports and games – basketball, tennis, volleyball, kickball, softball and football; plus, everyone’s favorite lawn games, like bocce, horseshoes, cornhole and ladder toss. Phiuf! What a list!

Close by the property, you can take some time to explore too. The region offers restaurants, breweries, farms, antiquing, markets, distilleries, artisan shops, ski mountains, and breathtaking hikes.

You might be asking…but what about the food and drinks!?

Where do we begin? We had a delicious, tasty experience and loved it all.

They have a garden where, not only they grow their own produce, but they also host summer outdoor dining experiences.

“Walk into our expansive Chef’s Garden and see where it all begins. The garden charms with its white picket fence and twinkling lights as we bring out the season’s best, harvested right beyond your feet. A 50-person farm table sits on a reclaimed brick patio in the center of the garden for a truly farm-to-table experience under the stars inside this expansive 4,000 square foot wonderland.”

“This Chef’s garden is a testament to our farm-to-table values, as we tailor our crops each season to grow produce specifically for the menus chosen by our clients. Whatever we cannot grow or make ourselves is sourced from our small-town farmer neighbors. We believe that cultivating a network of local purveyors ensures the most outstanding seasonal fare for your event.”

During winter, they put together a Apres CLE Party and some really private Pop Up Dinners that gathers the coolest crowd from NYC and neighbor towns! The menu is to-die-for!

The Apres CLE party is every Saturday, from 12pm – 6pm.

You can expect the grooviest tunes, a group of happy campers, old school toboggans, giant jenga, hot hot hot crackling fires paired with some yummy spiked hot cocoa!

Cedar Lakes Estate, a luxury custom wedding venue, was founded by entrepreneurial sisters Stephanie and Lisa Karvellas after recognizing the raw natural beauty of their parents’ 500-acre former summer camp in the heart of the Hudson Valley.

On a beautiful day in June, Stephanie herself got married at the Estate. As the owner and site coordinator, she was given carte blanche to host the most spectacular wedding imaginable. After building a team of the industry’s best, including Mindy Weiss as the planner, her vision came to life and the wedding was truly second to none.

About Stephanie, Derek and the Wedding:

Derek Baynton and Stephanie met Memorial Day Weekend 2012 in a share house in Montauk…not your typical love story. 25 singles in a beach house seemed like a recipe for disaster, but those who don’t believe in love at first sight, their housemates will tell you otherwise.

Since Stephanie spends all of her days planning other people’s weddings at her Estate, she wanted her wedding to feel different, and custom to what her and Derek care most about: extraordinary food, masterful cocktails, and creating an unforgettable experience for their beloved friends and family. Luckily she also had access to the industry’s best, who all couldn’t wait to make this wedding a showcase of their best work as well.

Stephanie and Derek offered three different cocktail hours in three locations.

The first one on the bluestone patio surrounding the infinity pool overlooking the lake, with a Montauk vibe. They offered lobster rolls, fresh sashimi cut to order, classic rum punches and live beachy music.

In addition, the final cocktail hour was in the open air pavilion with a massive stone fire pit. Decorated with tufted leather couches, cigar bars, cow hyde rugs and antler chandeliers, the men (and ladies!) enjoyed dirty martinis and small-batch whiskey flights.

Finally, the reception space was masterfully lit and draped with romantic, airy fabric and lace. Elaborate, wild green and white centerpieces hung from the ceiling. And, eucalyptus garland ran down the center of the barn wood tables. The tables had handmade lace runners and lace overlays draped on the chairs.

Joe’s Shanghai is my favorite spot for soup dumplings and peanut noodles! It’s well worth the wait. Even though I now live in Connecticut, my boyfriend and I will sometimes take Metro North into the City just because we’re craving those dumplings! Bring cash and an appetite.”

The restaurant was launched in 1995, in Flushing, Queens.

And, in no time, it became a hot spot for soup dumplings and crab pork meat!

A specialty shop serving authentic Belgian fries, perfectly doubt cooked (yeah!), topped with countless tasty sauces.

Can life get better that this?

We don’t think so. Ha!

“For a quick afternoon getaway, hop in the car and head up to Fishkill Farms, in the Hudson Valley. Depending on the time of year, there are plenty of fruits and vegetables to pick. Apple season is my favorite and their organic varieties are out of this world.”

Carly has been to Fishkill Farms several times – notice the different seasons in the pictures.

It’s a third generation Hudson Valley farm with ecologically-grown fruits and vegetables, with over 100 years!

The farm store and pick-your-own are open from 9am-6pm.

Here are a few other fun questions we asked Carly:

What does NYC mean to you?
“It sounds cliche, but I think NYC really does mean opportunity. Not only do you have the chance to make it in almost any career you could possibly imagine, but there are also so many opportunities for experiences. No matter what time it is, or what day it is, or what neighborhood you’re in, there’s something interesting and exciting going on.”

What will a New Yorker never tell someone?
“If you’re in a pinch and need to use a restroom, skip the $5 Starbucks coffee toll and pop into a hotel lobby instead. They’re generally easy to locate and super clean.”

What piece of advice would you give someone that just moved to NYC?
“Get an unlimited MetroCard and commit to exploring different neighborhoods. I like to pick a restaurant or park in a spot I’ve never been to and then do some exploring before and after my visit.”

Curiosities Insider Interviews Amra and Elma Amra BeganovichAmra Beganovich

“After toiling away as an economist on World Bank projects for a few years, my sister and I realized that our calling lied elsewhere – like many of our millennial peers, we started dabbling in the digital space.

We began blogging in late 2012 on our website Club Fashionista and that quickly grew into our own brand Amra & Elma, which now is the only influencer lead digital marketing agency. With our own 2.3M following and a network of over 300,000 consumer influencers, we specialize in making brands explode in the digital space.

Our services include photo production, no-fee blogger program, social media management and media outreach. We have also contributed to some of the most prominent publications such as ELLE, InStyle, Marie Claire, Business Insider, and Bloomberg.

Some of our high-profile clients include: Uber, SmartWater, Johnson & Johnson, Avon, Make Up For Ever, E S P R I T, and Dr. Marten’s. I currently reside in New York City but make an effort to escape and travel as often as I can as I find a great deal of creative inspiration in all corners of the world.”

Curiosities Insider Interviews Amra and Elma Elma Beganovich

Elma Beganovich

“When my career in law seemed to spiral into a rut and started looking like a dead-end job, I took a leap of faith (in myself mostly) and joined my sister Amra, who was working on her blog and digging deep in the social media and digital space.

Blogging soon grew into our careers as digital influencers, which then turned into our own namesake brand Amra & Elma – the only influencer founded digital media agency. We focus on social media and digital influencer marketing. We are proud of our own 2.3M following on social, and boast a network of over 300,000 consumer influencers, many of whom are our personal friends and colleagues.

As mentioned above, our goal is to help brands catch fire in the digital space, and our services include photo production with professional models and/or influencers, no-fee blogger program, social media management, and media outreach.

We have also contributed to some of the most prominent publications. I currently reside in New York City but enjoy traveling whenever possible in order to break free of the everyday and nurture my creativity.”

Take a look at their Top 7 Favorite Spots in NYC:

Curiosities Insider Interviews Amra and Elma Ralph Lauren Cafe by Habituallychic

“This is one of our favorite spots during NYFW as influencers all across the world gather here between shows to sip on their favorite coffee and tasty (and healthy) treats. The café is tucked away on the second floor of the store allowing one to catch a break during a busy day.”

We all know about the massive Ralph Lauren flagship store located in the heart of 5th Avenue.

But, not many people know about a tiny coffee shop inside it.

It’s certainly a great space to escape the Manhattan chaos!

Their coffee ‘is certified organic, ethically and sustainably sourced’, which does make all the difference!

Location: 711 Fifth Avenue, 2nd Floor, Midtown

Curiosities Insider Interviews Amra and Elma John Frieda Serge Normant

Manhattan is not only the center of fashion, but also a center for beauty!

With so many amazing spots, it’s definitely hard to pick one!

One of the leading hair stylist in NYC, Serge Normant, partnered up with John Frieda, famous for his signature Hair Care Line.

Together, they founded Serge Normant at John Frieda.

Via Quadronno is a traditional Italian restaurant, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

It was founded in 1999. It’s known for being a paninoteca, serving truffled paninis and delicious homemade pastries paired with irresistible cappuccinos.

As they explain:

“Mankind trained dogs and pigs to sniff for white truffles, assisting in the quest for this heavenly treat. Wild boars don’t need training: they instinctively know how to locate truffles, for they have been enjoying them for millennia. It is the boar’s nose for truffles that helped fuel his reputation as the undisputed gourmet of the animal kingdom.”

“The Storm King Art Center almost seems magical with its outdoor sculptures, which are the best to experience during the spring and summer months. It’s a perfect place to observe art and absorb the refreshing outdoors scenery away from the concrete and the hectic energy of Manhattan.”

The Frick Collection is like a little oasis secluded from the business of Manhattan with its marvelous art and majestic garden spaces and sculptures. I would suggest going here to catch a break and for a little time travel into the early 1900s.”

We all know that New York City hosts some of the richest and most important museums in the world!

In addition, we know that it’s always tempting to visit all of them when you’re visiting the city.

That is, if you’re interested in art, of course.

The Frick Collection is surely one of these great spots.

And, it showcases one of the most important collections of Western fine art today.

Location: 1 East 70th Street, Upper East Side

www.frick.org

The West Village is surely one of the top 3 restaurants we most love in Manhattan.

We are always there exploring new spots or just roaming around the beautiful streets.

It’s predominately a residential neighborhood, but the small shops, coffees and restaurants give it a lively vibe!

We love what the guys at The West Village Life doing to share the neighborhood’s beauty – picture are all theirs.

Location: Bleecker Street, West Village

To wrap up,  we asked them two fun questions:

What does NYC mean to both of you?

“I believe New York City means opportunity. Opportunity to feed off of the bustling energy and to learn from some of the most talented people in the world. It is a city where trends are started and dreams made. At the same time, one must stay weary and escape now and then and to catch a piece of mind and put it all into a perspective.

I think it is important to stay grounded and humbled. And, not to let so many of the temptations this city has to offer distract and interfere with one’s core values. Whatever the end-goal – why you came to this city – don’t even forget to take one day per week to yourself. And, just let loose and have fun.”

What would you girls tell a 1st timer in NY?

“I would share with a 1st timer in New York to take it all one step at a time. Also, to be more observant in order to learn rather than dive readily into action.

Also, I would tell him/her to enjoy the variety the city has to offer. From different districts to spectacular sites, like the views from the top of the Rockefeller Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Arts.

Finally, as mentioned above, don’t forget to go away now and then to catch your breath. Plus, let it all sink in to gain a better perspective on life and to prosper personally and in your career.”

Thank you Amra and Elma for being part of our Insider Interviews and sharing your favorite spots in NY!

*Pictures were taken during the month of October!*

Here is what Vicky shares with us:

Sounds like the perfect timing to escape the city and explore the Hudson Valley. One of its gems is the Storm King Art Center – a contemporary outdoor sculpture museum where you can enjoy a nice cultural day outdoors.

To start, it’s located in the lower Hudson area, one hour north of New York. The property has 500-acre landscape of fields, hills and woodlands.

This outdoor museum features a collection with more than 100 sculptures created by renowned artists like Barnett Newman, Louise Bourgeois, Maya Lin and Richard Serra.

A great way to experience the landscape Storm King has to offer is touring the gardens on a bike!

Rentals are first-come, first-served, so be sure to see that as soon as you get there.

They also offer a small kiosk with food and drinks, but don’t expect a huge sit down lunch. Options are limited and if you have any food restrictions, we recommend you bringing something from home to guarantee you’ll be fine!

In addition, one of the options to get to Storm King is via Metro North train from Grand Central Terminal to Beacon. Then, you can get a taxi from Beacon to the Storm King.”

Lastly, Storm King reopens Wednesday, April 5th at 10am! They are offering a free Storm King Family Membership to their first visitor on the 5th! So, if you’re interested, don’t forget to hurry up there.

So, we can’t wait to be back there this year!

And, not to mention, Storm King Art Center is the perfect place to organize not only a visit with friends & family, but also a cultural corporate activity with your team!

We love the Catskills region of upstate New York. Moreover, we are also fascinated in exploring abandoned spots where there once was an entire booming scene of people and life!

It’s incredible to learn what happened to these places. Why it became forgotten and to be able to walk through and register what it has transformed into.

If you L-O-V-E photography books and these abandoned locations, then you’ll love this book! It’s called “The Borscht Belt: Revisiting the Remains of America’s Jewish Vacationland”, by Marisa Scheinfeld.

It takes place in the Catskills Mountain Region, in upstate New York. In addition, it has some of the most intriguing images that will entice your curiosity.

Below is an excerpt from Marisa’s website where she explains with more details what this project is about.

“Today the Borscht Belt is recalled through the nostalgic lens of summer swims, Saturday night dances, and comedy performances. But its current state, like that of many other formerly glorious regions, is nothing like its earlier status.

Forgotten about and exhausted, much of its structural environment has been left to decay. The Borscht Belt, which features essays by Stefan Kanfer and Jenna Weissman Joselit, presents Marisa Scheinfeld’s photographs of abandoned sites. There, resorts, hotels, and bungalow colonies once boomed in the Catskill Mountain region of upstate New York.

The book assembles images Scheinfeld has shot inside and outside locations that once buzzed with life as year-round havens for generations of people. Some of the structures have been lying abandoned for periods ranging from four to twenty years, depending on the specific hotel or bungalow colony and the conditions under which it closed.

Other sites have since been demolished or repurposed. This makes this book an even more significant documentation of a pivotal era in American Jewish history.

The Borscht Belt presents a contemporary view of more than forty hotel and bungalow sites. From entire expanses of abandoned properties to small lots containing drained swimming pools, the remains of the Borscht Belt era now lie forgotten, overgrown, and vacant.

In the absence of human activity, nature has reclaimed the sites, having encroached upon or completely overtaken them. Many of the interiors have been vandalized or marked by paintball players and graffiti artists.

Each ruin lies radically altered by the elements and effects of time. Scheinfeld’s images record all of these developments.”

Take a look at Marisa’s countless upcoming events. These are great opportunities to meet her and get your book signed!

She is an extremely sweet person, besides obviously, extremely talented.

You will love her!
