I was invited to enjoy a unique NYC dining experience, different from what I have already done around New York City. And believe me, I have done countless experiences around town.

But this time, I was called for a Vegan African Feast at Chef Linda’s home! I was intrigued from the start, considering that not only would Chef Linda cater a totally new menu, but she was going to open her home to host us for this super special night!

I was excited and extremely curious too!

Chef Linda (aka Linda Adria Sebisaho) is was born in the Eastern part of Congo, in Africa and moved to New York at the age of 15! Initially, she dreamt of getting into medical school, but totally changed her mind and became a math teacher! Her cooking talent  kicked in a bit later.

Today, she runs her own catering company. She loves these types of social dining experiences, having meals with strangers, that leaves as friends by the end of the night!

She says, “it’s a form of art”, and we couldn’t agree more!

That said, Chef Linda was thrilled to co-host this night with Your Friends Kitchen, created and founded by Meenakshi lala.

So, let me tell you a bit about how the night unraveled!

Chef Linda’s home is in Harlem, a neighborhood I love exploring with all its Jazz spots and amazing restaurants like Seasoned Vegan. I headed up with a friend, that was just as excited!

As we arrived, everyone there warmly greeted us! The table was decorated with colors inspired by the African culture, setting the mood of the night to come.

In addition, they printed a beautiful menu with what we were going to eat during the night! The menu had this beautiful illustration of an African woman wearing one of the gorgeous fabric head arrangements, already bringing us into the journey that was about to start!

Chef Linda introduced herself and in no time, the feast had started! The event is “B.Y.O.B. – Bring Your Own Bottle”, so be sure to bring any drink that makes you happy!

Here is what the menu looked like:

  • Starter #1: Yucca – Mashed Yucca stuffed with chickpeas or cheese
  • Starter #2: Sambusa – Fried dough filled with spiced carrots, peas and potatoes
  • Salad: Sachumbari – East African salad made from tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and lime
  • Main #1: Yassa Aubergine – Harissa spiced eggplants, pilau rice and ginger caramelized onions
  • Main #2 (a surprise!): Plantain with white beans, onions and tomato sauce
  • Dessert: Beignets – Savory fried African doughnut served with strawberries

Each dish was explained by Chef Linda, where she would tell us a quick story of its meaning, influence and ingredients.

Portions were extremely generous, beautifully arranged and the best of it all: we had truly a great time, laughed all night long with the stories everyone shared and made some interesting business connections.

Chef Linda amazed us with her talent and we left having a new group of friends that we hope to stay in touch with and explore other dining experiences by Your Friend’s Kitchen!

Last, but definitely not least, I’d love to thank Meenakshi, for inviting us to be part of this special night! We are happy to be part of this new community she’s building and will definitely be back for more!

As they say “While Grand Central Terminal is majestic, for some reason Penn Station is worn down, ugly and universally hated.” But, the old beating heart and beautiful rich history of the station is still alive and worth sharing!

To start, people don’t keep track, but New York Penn Station is the “main intercity railroad station in New York City and the busiest in the Western Hemisphere, serving more than 630,000 passengers per weekday as of 2018.” (Source: Wikipedia).

Amazing, right?

That said, there are two things most commuters don’t realize about Penn.

First, there used to be a gorgeous Beaux Arts station that was demolished in the mid-60’s. Second: Parts of that old station can still be found today. They’ve just been buried under the arena that landed on top of them.

On the tour of “The Remnants of Penn Station”, you’ll be taken back inside this central transportation hub to discuss the past, present and future plans for the structure. Although Amtrak only acknowledges one remnant remaining, tour participants will learn about station history and discover remnants of the McKim, Mead & White building located in plain sight.

In addition, tours will continue to be supported by photographic presentations of the station by renown photographers Norman McGrath, Peter Moore, and Aaron Rose. Along with the work of railroad aficionados Alexander Hatos, an employee of Pennsylvania Railroad and Ron Ziel, a railroad historian.

Lastly, take a look at what the revamping of Penn Station looks like below!

It’s said that this renovation has been approved and will cost around $1.6 billion and that the new Moynihan Train Hall will have countless attractions and amenities. It’s estimated to be done by the end of 2020.

Let’s wait and see!

Six Impossible Things: Interactive Magic Experience with Joshua Jay

Events On Going Six Impossible Things Joshua Jay NYC with Fernanda Paronetto

Who doesn’t enjoy a little bit of magic in their lives? I certainly do! I got a behind the scenes peek into Six Impossible Things, a magic show that defies all Laws of Nature! Uncover with me the world of Joshua Jay!

When we walk around New York, we find a little bit a magic spread throughout every corner of the city!

Events On Going Six Impossible Things Joshua Jay NYC Skull

And I mean, who in this world does not like a bit of magic? I do!

Joshua Jay is one of the most renowned names today in the world of magic!

He’s performed in over 100 countries, he’s won several prizes, he’s been live in countless TV shows and he even holds a Guinness World of Records for card tricks, which is pretty awesome!

He still holds the title up to this date!

How I met Josh? Well, I met him back in 2011 in Brazil where my brother and I participated in a small shooting he was doing at a friend’s photography studio!

I really thought that we would not fall for his tricks, but…to my surprise, it was truly a-m-a-z-i-n-g!

Now, Josh lives in NY (hum…actually he’s been here for over 10 years!) and started a special show called Six Impossible Things.

I went behind the scenes before his show started, to check out what’s going on, before he goes on stage!

And the magic happens, right behind a blue door…

Get your ticket!

My experience at the show!

Events On Going Six Impossible Things Joshua Jay NYC Fernanda Paronetto

After the shooting with Josh, I actually came back to witness the show and I was in awe all through this interactive experience.

There were only 20 people there, keeping it quite intimate. Every single person was able to participate in one or another magic and engage with Josh during the show.

Plus, each one had a one-on-one with him!

At each magic trick it just kept getting more and more amazing and it truly blew my mind (and everyone that was there). I paid close attention to see if there was any way to figure out how it was done, but some tricks were pretty complex to even try…

What can I say? For one, I don’t want to do any spoiler alerts, but you’ll be sure to see some of the most spectacular magic tricks ever, that even defy all Laws of Nature! Oh, and the art work by Serge Bloch is breathtaking and pretty special!

I LOVED IT and recommend it to every one out there, at every age!

More about the show:

“Six Impossible Things is an interactive magic experience in which you will experience astounding magic inches from your face, in the dark and even alone.”

The show is approximately 75 minutes and includes an unusual refreshment and a hard-backed volume not otherwise for sale.

Events On Going Six Impossible Things Joshua Jay NYC Hands

Six Impossible Things has been built into Wildrence, an acclaimed event space on the Lower East Side.

Tickets are $106—136.

Doors open fifteen minutes before showtime and the show begins promptly at the designated hour. Absolutely no late admittance or refunds offered.

We love everything related to Daybreaker! We’ve written about their morning dance party that  you should take a look. Their style and their concept: “a morning movement that will start your day off unlike anything else”. Expect everything related to Yoga, Dance, Wellness and Mischief!

They’re blasting off to the dance floor with moves that are outta this world. Earth Day’s around the corner, so they wanted to celebrate everything that’s ever walked, trotted, hopped and — most importantly — danced across this beautiful planet.

Then they thought, what would make it even more epic? An invite to the entire solar system, you say? Let’s. do. it.

On Wednesday, April 19th, they’re opening up the dance floor to every animal, mammal and alien-inspired costume our minds can think up, at their event called “INTERGALACTIC SAFARI: ANIMALS & ALIENS”.

And, since they’re bananas for DJ Sammy Bananas, he’ll be spinning the tunes to spin us into orbit. He’s also among the DJs For Climate Action, so it just feels right, ya know?

Plus, secret locale alert: They just locked in the Gilded Lily for this one, so buckle up and get ready to blast off in an oldie but goodie.

See you on the dance floor, and let’s inter-get-at-it at Daybreaker NYC…ohhh snap!

Wake up…and let’s dance! Tickets here!

Lastly, if you enjoy these types of healthy, fitness events to start off or end your say, take a look at this article we wrote about the upcoming New York City party scene!

If you’re into music, really good music, incredible artists and intimate events in unique spots, this is for you! Many have already heard of Sofar Sounds NYC, right?!

Events On Going Sofar Sounds NYC Live Music

It all started with a group of friends playing great live music in someone’s living room, back in London! People were chit-chatting during the show and this group of friends couldn’t really enjoy the band, as they wanted.

So, they decided to start hosting private, secret gigs, with fantastic upcoming bands, in their own living room. In no time, rooms were filled up and people were fighting for a spot at their events.

Then, their concept simply went global, and they started hosting events in several different cities and countries. Today, they are in over 300 cities and are still able to keep it private and secret.

How it works? You’re able to see the neighborhood the shows will happen, but you have no idea which 3 bands are performing. When you sign up, you need to wait for the confirmation that your ticket is confirmed. Then, the exact location is sent through email only a few hours prior to the show.

But wait!!! All Behind the Scenes NYC followers have a promo-code allows you to skip the line and guarantees you instant access when purchasing tickets! WUHU!

The code is: BEHINDTHESCENES (Code might change every now and then, so contact us if it doesn’t work!)

Formally Founded in 2010 and based…all over the place. Sofar is an expanding network of artists and music lovers. A Global Music Community. Each month Sofar is happening in 263 cities all around the world.

Sofar Sounds started in 2009, in a tiny North London flat. Frustrated by the traditional live music experience, we hosted three young artists who played to a carefully selected audience of true music lovers. And after that show, those people went and told their friends…

We are now the world’s largest live music discovery community; curating secret, intimate gigs in unique spaces all around the world. Bringing the magic back to live music.

Sofar Sounds offers artists and music fans the unique opportunity to perform and experience intimate gigs in packed living rooms regularly.

Join us in creating a better way to discover live music. If you can get in.”

Lucky you are part of our BTSNYC world, so you can skip the line, right? You might bump into us and our Founder, – she’s always there with friends!

Have fun!

People visit New York for many reasons: the amazing museums, awarded Broadway plays or the incredible variety of restaurants. We have one more to add to this extensive list: Flower School NY.

Located in the trendy Chelsea neighborhood, the school is a place to explore your flower arrangement design skills. You might also want start a new profession or just spend some time relaxing and getting creative.

Eileen Johnson, the Founder, decided to open the school after realizing that there wasn’t anything similar in the city: “I always wanted to have my own business and I love to entertain. I had thought of having a cooking school, but there were already so many…”.

So, she saw an article in the NY Times about a flower arrangement program in Paris and was intrigued. The experience was really enjoyable and when she came back to NY she decided to start the Flower School wanting “to highlight the artists who are in New York”.

Moreover, the program is really extensive, with classes for all levels, available year-round. You don’t need any previous experience to join. The professional program lasts 8 weeks with a month-long internship in a real flower shop.

In the Spring, the Flower School NY offers a trip to Holland where students can experience the unique flower auction in Aalsmeer, visit local florists and attend workshops with some local masters.

The trip is opened to anyone interested. Plus, it’s an opportunity to learn the behind the scenes of the flower industry.

Speaking of masters, Eileen brings the most renowned ones to give workshops throughout the year. Names like: Christian Tortu, Oscar Mora, Olivier Giugni, Shane Connoly – Prince Charles’ personal florist, just to name a few. Each one with his or her own technique and style.

Like great chefs we are highlighting the art and artistry of great florists”, says Eileen.

I have, myself, attended the professional program. Besides the professionalism from the instructors and the staff, the classes were just delightful and therapeutic.

Eileen has big plans. Next is the Perfume School of NY for people who want to learn the art of perfume making with some of the best perfumers of the world.

“There’s a resurgence of interest in artisanal perfuming and we are interested in being part of it.”

On your next trip to New York City, put aside the shopping and try the Flower School and their flower arranging classes in NYC!

In addition, you enjoy this type of activity, you might want to try the community-driven classes at Brooklyn Brainery and a unique Korean cooking class in a gorgeous kitchen in Manhattan.

Lastly, for corporate activities, let your experts organize a fantastic experience for your and your team.

During Business School, Jenny and her husband Matt, found it difficult to find a comfortable environment to meet interesting strangers and talk openly with friends. So, they started the I Forgot It’s Wednesday dinners with a unique mission to actively engage people on a deeper level.

Jenny is a professional chef and has a background in fine dining. Most recently she was part of the team at 2 Michelin starred Atera, in New York City. Her husband, Matt, a self-taught mixologist, recently won the Star Chefs Cocktail Competition. Amazing duo, right?

Since January 2014 they’ve hosted 70+ dinners, including 3 large scale popup events.

They just relaunched their dining experiences in New York City last month, after taking over San Francisco by storm last year.

They were named the “#1 supperclub in SF” by the prestigious 7×7 magazine, over Michelin-starred Lazy Bear! In addition,  SF Weekly, Eater and other renowned publications featured them!

Their February relaunch was profiled by UrbanDaddy. They’ve since been written up in Huffington Post and Epoch Taste as well!

I Forgot It’s Wednesday Dinner Series:

  • Location: Artist Loft in Chelsea – 18th and 8th Avenue
  • Dates & Times: Dinner – one Saturday a month at 8pm
  • Price: 7 Course Dinner | 4 Cocktail Flight: $85 | $30
  • Website & Menu: Check online

Today, the dinner series does not happen anymore, but they created Studio ATAO. It’s a 501(c)3 is a nonprofit, mission-driven immersive events company that creates exhibitions & live experiences at the intersection of food, art and social impact.

Last, if you are looking for other dining experience in NYC or would like a private and catered experience for you, contact our experts. On the other hand, we also work with companies of all sizes to organize corporate events and dinners.

How does Brooklyn Brainery work?

Students and guests curate all the course and workshop topics at Brooklyn Brainery. So, teachers are part of the most amazing group of people spread throughout New York.

If you have a passion and would like to share your expertise and talent with a group of like minded individuals, come and teach!

The people in charge of running this community-driven business will take care of all the details for you. From planning the class and organizing all the sign ups, to promoting the workshop and gathering all the material you need. You only need to come and teach.

What you have to do? Focus on what you’ll do best: teach! Take time to organize your class in a unique and engaging way, where students will leave wanting more!

The classes are are usually set up to last from 1-2 weeks. The community is smart enough to organize it all and keep it as inexpensive as possible. Their understanding is that you “shouldn’t have to spend a paycheck to learn something new.” And we agree!

So, in general, classes and workshops are something like $30, for a couple of sessions. But, they still do offer an entire variety of free events!

Follow Brooklyn Brianery on Instagram to see all the cool things happening in their two locations, in Brooklyn.

Plus, you’ll love reading about other workshops in NY,  like the ones at the National Gourmet Institute, located in the heart of Manhattan.

These types of activities are great to organize with friends and family, or even for corporate groups, so contact our experts to brainstorm great experiences catered for you!

190 Underhill Avenue, Prospect Heights
