A Downtown NYC Shopping Guide For Men By Joey Zauzig

Shop Ladies and Gents Menswear Joey Zauzig NYC

If you’re looking for few great places to shop for men’s clothing and accessories, take a look at this selection by our amazing Contributor, Joey Zauzig! It’s a short downtown NYC shopping guide for men.

Joey Zauzig shared some of his favorite stores to refresh your closet!

Downtown shopping is something that some would describe as challenging. Uptown shopping has a stigma of having the best stores for your go-to closet must-haves.

Moreover, some of the best spots to shop at downtown do exist. They just might be a bit trickier to find and filter out with all the other boutiques on every street in the downtown boroughs.

For instance, some of my favorite stores from Midtown Manhattan to Brooklyn include, Dover Street Market, Fish for the Hip and Bird.

Bird is always a great shop not just because of the must have mens pieces it has to offer, but the comfy, downtown environment. Not many know about this retail gem, but you might feel like you’ve struck gold when you see the refined men’s section.

So, trust me, sure to find your winter to fall transition piece here.

To be honest, when it comes to designer re-sale, I’m always a bit weary. Additionally, there are so many “popular” ones, you really never know what you are going to get.

Fisch for the Hip is key to finding your favorite designer staples.

Dover Street Market

Last, but certainly not least, Dover Street Market.

It not only has the dopest selection of your favorite classic and more eclectic pieces, but wins for best esthetically pleasing shopping experience.

Sometimes window shopping isn’t such a depressing thing and if you’re going to do this it would be here. Yet, you would most likely find yourself buying the latest designer piece to hit the floor or grabbing a pastry at Rose Cafe.

Sunday: 12pm–6pm

STORY at Macy’s: Reinventing Themes, Curating Object, Anticipating Trends

Let’s reinvent everything every 4 to 8 weeks! “STORY at Macy’s is a space that has the point of view of a magazine, changes like a gallery and sells things like a store.”

previous arrow
next arrow
previous arrownext arrow

STORY at Macy’s has a fantastic concept, right? We love the math: reinventing themes, curating object and anticipating trends!

To start, the space was launched in the end of 2011 by Rachel Shechtman. She’s been was nominated as “one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business and Fortune Magazine’s 40 under 40”.

So how did it all start?

“Founded by Rachel Shechtman, a former brand consultant for Kraft, TOMS shoes and Lincoln, the idea was to create a retail concept that would serve as a matchmaker between brands and consumers, integrating strategies of marketing, merchandising, and business development.”

So, let’s go back and understand what their concept actually means.

Well, every four to eight weeks, the 2000 sq ft store completely reinvents itself presenting new themes, objects and trends!

They do a complete makeover from merchandise and store design to floor plan and fixtures.

A few themes they’ve explored are:

  • Design: During NYC Design week)
  • Style.Tech: Connects the dots between style and technology)
  • His: An experiential dialogue about men’s grooming and style)
  • Good: Tapping into our collective power to make change)
  • and other theses like Love, New York, Wellness, Art and more!

As Beth Comstock, CMO and GE at STORY says:

“There is a huge value for brands in having a place where you can experiment, and to have a lab that actually creates a profit and a recurring revenue stream, and gives people a good experience.”

We couldn’t agree more! We love the entire concept, the product curation and specially the experience provided to every single customer that walks into the store!

So, go see what we mean by: reinventing themes, curating object and anticipating trends! They have closed their Chelsea store and now can be found in multiple Macy’s department stores!

We are all about local businesses, but in this case, STORY grew into STORY at Macy’s and is expanding! If you want to go back to exploring something local, a great spot is Rough Trade, in Williamsburg.

Hours: Check store hours online.

Location: Multiple Macy’s locations, please check online.

We never get tired of Djula!

To start, Djula, launched by Alexandre Corrot in 1994, in the famous and chic Quartier Latin, in Paris was an immediate success.

His fashionable and at the same time, timeless designs have become an addiction not only for us, but for several amazing women.

In addition, famous names like Chiara Ferragni, Rihanna, Natalie Portman, Georgia May Jagger, Zooey Deschanel, Isabeli Fontana and countless others celebrity clients!

Plus, in 2013 they created the first collection for men. They offer pieces for men like watches, bracelets and even protection talismans. We have to state that their pieces are for the more modern, stylish and innovative men out there.

And still, we also enjoy their extremely creative and playful campaigns. Hands are obviously the protagonists and are arranged in interesting ways to best expose the pieces.

Take a look at a behind the scenes video of their 2014 Campaign shoot:

More about the brand:

“Outrageous and provocative, Alexandre Corrot builds his collections, like his campaigns, into authentic works of art. Beyond the constraints of traditional jewelry, the Djula spirit remains that of the young Parisian house spearheading the «Glam Rock» trend in its jewelry almost twenty years ago.”

More importantly, the sourcing follows rigorous and ethical policies. The impeccable quality and Carrot’s creations are inspired by different women’s personalities.

In conclusion, when you buy jewelry the experience is meant to be a memorable one.

So, if you live in New York City, or if you are visiting and you’re interested in buying fine jewelry, contact our experts to see what our Private Jewelry Shopping & Consultation is all about!

Jay Kos NYC: Definitely Not For The Timid

Shop Ladies and Gents Jay Kos by Rebecca Dale Adler

Jay Kos NYC is a brand for the bold, unique men with strong and fearless personality. It is definitely not for the timid. If you’re this type of man, then jump right into this post!

Jay Kos is one of the stores we really enjoy recommending to the bold, unique men with strong and fearless personality.

Jay’s story begins back in Westfield, New Jersey. It doesn’t surprise us when we learned that Jay had a hard time adjusting to the uniformity and lack of individualism of that community. Inside, he wanted to express his talent and creativity, but it was only years later that he got closer to the fashion universe.

At 16 he started his own flea market business and in the early 1990’s he began selling high-end luxury brands. In no time, he was the “talk of the town”!

He even tried Dental School, but found out his real calling, was Fashion!

Today,  Jay is not only a designer, but also a Chef. He gets much of his design inspiration from the food’s tastes, colors and textures! Pretty special, huh!?

His store is located in SoHo and it’s décor sends you back to the 1940’s, with a twist.

He designed a special kitchen that, if you’re lucky enough, you’ll be served a snack by Jay himself! The selection for the bold and adventurous men range from polka-dot ties, felt hats, rich colored vests and blazers, to other pretty exotic items.

In addition, for the more conservative men, they are also able to find amazing items. From perfectly tailored linen and wool suits, corduroy pans and the best: exclusively tailored suits that range from $4,500 up to $20,000. Certainly a special piece to have in your closet.

It can get pretty expensive, but Jay’s singular touch and eye for details do make the price comprehensible.

Shopping at Jay Kos NYC is, above all, a rare experience! So, enjoy!

If you’d like to have a Personal Stylist helping you out, and even pre selecting the items that match your style and taste, contact our experts.

Goorin Bros Custom-Made Hats: A Silent Statement

Shop Ladies and Gents Goorin Bros Dog Hat

Goorin Bros journey starts back in 1895, when they set off to create custom-made hats. Today they are one of the best stores in New York to purchase your head adornment!

Goorin Bros hat shop has a fantastic story!

It all started way back in 1895, with Cassel Goorin. He created custom-made hats off his horse cart in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“A hat allows you to make a statement without saying a word” – Ben Goorin

Furthermore, several years later, in 1921, Cassel taught his two sons, Alfred and Ted, the art and business of his trade. When Alfred and Ted took over Cassel’s business, it became the Goorin Brothers.

Alfred and Ted knew about their father’s passion for outdoor activities and decided, in 1948, to create the Grenadier Catalog. In other words, it was a sporting line designed to accommodate the hunter, fisherman and camper alike.

In 1949, Alfred moved to San Francisco, expanding their business and their awareness. They also added hat-related accessories to their successful line of headwear. Unique items like gloves and mittens, socks, and other sportswear were created.

The successful story passed on through generations of the Goorin family. In 1991, Ben Goorin of the 4th generation, observed the cultural movement of the 90’s. He knew that the Goorin archives contained the hats that would make a great comeback.

Eventually, in 2012 Goorin Bros focused on bringing a personal level of genuine interaction back – hat shops and customers.

They wanted to make hat wearing relevant again.

Now, imagine a world with beautifully crafted hats once again reigning the street scene. How cool would that be!? Well, on our end, we’re huge supporters!

Plus, sometimes you can be lucky enough to see a rare solo set in their Williamsburg store!

Note! They to have hats for women too, so girls, go there have fun! If you have kinds, they have the trendiest options too.

In addition, if you just love head adornments and you’re, let’s stay, the “bold” type-a-gal, you might want to check out Dora Marra. She has one of the best stores in New York.

Inventory Magazine: Design, Craftsmanship, Culture For Boys

Inventory Magazine was launched in 2009 as an online and biannual publication. With focus on design, craftsmanship and culture, they definitely stand out from other publications out there!

The founders focus on exploring a unique and global perspective on design, craftsmanship and culture, instead of only scouting trends.

Furthermore, the goal is to offer an experience based on brands, designers and artists that have the commitment to quality and desire for innovation!

The magazine emphasizes on accomplished journalism and amazing imagery. In addition, they are working to represent contemporary icons alongside future influencers.

So, guided by the same principles, the Inventory store offers a carefully considered selection of brands, publications and objects. They are all available online and at retail spaces in New York and Vancouver. You can also find them at Dover Street Market’s London and Tokyo locations.

Unfortunately, they’ve decided to stop publishing the magazine in 2016.

Below you can see the letter written by Ryan Willms, the Founder:

“Inventory Magazine: 2009-2016 — After seven years, we’ve decided to stop publishing Inventory. We’re extremely grateful to everyone that has supported the magazine by advertising with us or selling it in their stores; to those of you that have purchased a copy; and to the people and brands that have helped to bring our pages to life over the course of thirteen issues.

Making this magazine has been such a valuable experience. The lessons learned, knowledge gained, and relationships cemented will never be replaced, and it’s a journey that I’ll remember forever. Due to the content and the people involved, it’s been a very personal project from the start, and I have to say the biggest thank you to my colleagues along the way. Plus, I want to acknowledge the pivotal work of Simon Roe from the beginning to the very end, as well as the roles played by Philip Watts and Owen Parrott, Stephen Mann and Anthony Hooper, Matthew Klassen and Chris Allen. Without your dedication Inventory would not have reached the same heights.

I look back on the legacy of what we’ve created with awe and pride, but the publishing landscape has shifted and it feels like the right time to move on, to conclude things with arguably our best issue, and pursue new challenges and opportunities.

Ryan Willms”

We wish you guys all the best and can’t wait to see your upcoming projects!

With design in mind, you might want to take a look at a post we did about Bang & Olufsen. They have a fantastic vintage collection that will enrich your home’s design.

More about Satya:

“Satya’s first entrepreneurial endeavor started in 2010 when her mother asked for a soft hat to cover her bare head. She had begun to lose her hair from cancer treatment.

So, Satya continued making hats for herself, her mother and their friends out of her apartment using a jiffy steamer and her home oven.

As demand increased and needing to fill orders, Satya’s friend designer Charles Nolan, introduced her to the Makins Hat Factory (one of Manhattan’s last hat factories, located on 35th street in Manhattan).

Furthermore, she worked closely with them until 2013, when the 40 year old Makins Hat Factory abruptly closed.
By saving Manhattan’s last hat factories Satya and her team continue to preserve the legacy of the Makins Hat factory and the craft of hand made hats in America.

Satya grew up in Southern California & graduated from Wellesley College.”
