Pippin Vintage Jewelry is owned by Stephen and Rachel Cooper, whose first date was to an auction! Before opening the shop, Stephen was a vendor at the Chelsea Flea Markets and Rachel, an antique collector and teacher.

In the summer of 2006, the Coopers and their friends and families renovated what was previously a hidden carriage house down an alley. Pippin opened its doors to vintage lovers across New York City ever since!

What sets Pippin apart from most jewelry stores is that while others specialize in certain kinds of jewelry, Pippin has a whole spectrum. Their jewelry selection ranges from five dollar charms to engagement rings that cost thousands of dollars; the jewelry come from as early as the 1800’s and as current as the 1980’s.

As well, while most stores guard their jewelry behind glass encasements, Pippin displays their jewelry in creative ways. They change them up often, allowing customers to interact with the pieces.

We asked the store manager, Tatianni, her advice for vintage jewelry lovers.

“First of all, come here,” she laughs. “But seriously, with vintage jewelry, you just have to find something that speaks to you because vintage has such a range of style through the decades. Buying vintage is great because it has a lesser impact on our planet, and most things were made here.”

“The type of jewelry that is trending right now are unique stones like agates. Druzies are also very in vogue right now.”

Besides the jewelry on display, Pippin also has drawers upon drawers of earrings and cufflinks. Tatianni let me play around with the jewelry, and even helped me pick out a pair of clip-on earrings from the 1970’s.

Fun fact: most vintage earrings from the 1970’s happen to be clip-ons. So, you do not have to worry about whether you or your intended recipients have pierced ears or not!

Behind Pippin Vintage Jewelry, through a whimsically lit alley, you will find its sister store, Pippin Home.

It specializes in furniture and antiques carefully curated and bought from estate auctions in Western Massachusetts and Vermont.

Manager Jack advises those looking to furnish their homes to never be too anxious. He says:

“Space fills up quickly, so you want to be well thought out on your pieces. The advantage of buying vintage over mass produced is that vintage always maintains integrity and value.”

So the next time you’re in Chelsea or New York City, be sure to visit this treasure box of vintage jewelry and home goods!

We’ve been following their growth and in awe with their Social Media success…we do have to agree that Wowfulls ice creams are THE perfect dessert to photograph right!?

These guys started in grand style, being part of the Smorgasburg and in no time became their “to-go dessert spot”.

They explain their magic:

“We serve 1950’s-style Hong Kong egg waffles also known as Gai Dàn Jai. The taste and texture of our Gai Dàn Jai — crispy on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside, was once only found in the streets of Hong Kong. We’ve cultivated that awesomeness here.

Not only are we introducing one of Hong Kong’s most famous street snacks to foodies in the States, we’re also injecting our cultural spin to Wowfulls. For example, we blend Japanese Matcha to create our Green Tea egg waffle with white chocolate chips.”

This is what you can have:

  • Chocolate Wowfull with ice cream topped with Oreo Cookie Crumbs & chocolate banana Pocky
  • Matcha Green Tea with White Chocolate Chip Wowfull with ice cream topped with mochi & green tea Pocky
  • Original “Gai Dån Jai” Egg Waffles with ice cream topped with fresh strawberries & strawberry Pocky

OH-MY-GOD! Crazy, right? It’s actually hard to pick one to try first, so you’ll probably “have” to go back for more!

Now, the other best part is that they cater events too! We’re positive that your friends will talk about your gathering for an entire year after having some Wowfulls ice creams.

We also shot a delicious YouTube video there, where we walked about the Most Famous NYC Desserts, if you want to check it out!

If you don’t have time to organize your event, let our Concierge Services experts give you a hand!

Not much more to say, other than “Enjoy!”

Lastly, if you want to uncover more unique vendors that started at Smorgasburg, you might want to find more about the guys from Big Mozz! They do have one of the freshest and creamiest mozzarellas in town!

Hours: Monday – Sunday: 1pm – 9pm

Locations: 309 Houston Street, but you can still find them at Smorgasburg (Saturday’s in Williamsburg and Sunday’s at Prospect Park)

“Joe’s Shanghai is my favorite spot for soup dumplings and peanut noodles! It’s well worth the wait. Even though I now live in Connecticut, my boyfriend and I will sometimes take Metro North into the City just because we’re craving those dumplings! Bring cash and an appetite.”

The restaurant was launched in 1995, in Flushing, Queens.

And, in no time, it became a hot spot for soup dumplings and crab pork meat!

“I can’t get enough of Sarabeth’s amazing brunch. While many locations can have a ridiculous line, swing by Park Avenue South for a shorter (or no!) wait.”

Opened over 30 years ago, Sarabeth’s is definitely a must go if you’re in NYC.

They offer delicious homestyle cooking in a relaxed, non pretentious environment.

It’s great for Happy Hours too, so check their website to figure out which of the 5 locations will suit you best.

Curiosities Insider Interviews Carly A Heitlinger Pommes Frites

“After closing for a while, Pommes Frites is back in business! The authentic Belgian fries or poutine make a great afternoon pick-me-up. I have a personal rule to try a new dipping sauce every time I go– you can’t go wrong.”

What to expect?

A specialty shop serving authentic Belgian fries, perfectly doubt cooked (yeah!), topped with countless tasty sauces.

Can life get better that this?

We don’t think so. Ha!

Location: 128 Macdougal Street, Greenwich Village

“There tons of spas around the City, but if you’re short on time and still want to squeeze in a little pampering, try Heyday. Conveniently located in NoMad, the express spa offers 30-minute facials. Walk out of there with glowing skin in a New York minute!”

This is the perfect way to keep your skin healthy, even with a stressful NYC agenda.

They are soon opening a 2nd location, in August, in TriBeCa.

Locations:

UNFORTUNATELY THIS STORE PERMANENTLY CLOSED, BUT THEY STILL SELL ONLINE!

“Described by the NY Times as “intoxicating, “CW Pencil Enterprise is the place to go for pencils. It’s really one of the city’s more unique shopping experiences whether or not you’re a pencil enthusiast!”

Founded by Caroline Weaver, we couldn’t agree more with Carly as being a must-go spot to unleash your creative side!

We’ve written about CW Pencil, so check it out for further information and pictures!

Curiosities Insider Interviews Carly A Heitlinger Stick With Me Sweets

“Stick With Me Sweets is the place to go if you have a serious sweet tooth. The chocolate shop offers ridiculously delicious bonbons, caramels, truffles, and more.”

The store was launched in December of 2014 by Susanna Yoon, Founder and head chocolatier.

They offer over 24 unique flavored, hand made treats like bonbons, flavored caramels, chocolate truffles, crisp brittles, toffees, nougats, nut butters, and elegant small cakes.

Oh! And, their chocolatiers were trained under this city’s finest Michelin-starred chefs.

Can’t be less than “amazing”, right?

“For a quick afternoon getaway, hop in the car and head up to Fishkill Farms, in the Hudson Valley. Depending on the time of year, there are plenty of fruits and vegetables to pick. Apple season is my favorite and their organic varieties are out of this world.”

Carly has been to Fishkill Farms several times – notice the different seasons in the pictures.

It’s a third generation Hudson Valley farm with ecologically-grown fruits and vegetables, with over 100 years!

The farm store and pick-your-own are open from 9am-6pm.

Location: 9 Fishkill Farm Road, Hopewell Junction, NY

Here are a few other fun questions we asked Carly:

What does NYC mean to you?
“It sounds cliche, but I think NYC really does mean opportunity. Not only do you have the chance to make it in almost any career you could possibly imagine, but there are also so many opportunities for experiences. No matter what time it is, or what day it is, or what neighborhood you’re in, there’s something interesting and exciting going on.”

What will a New Yorker never tell someone?
“If you’re in a pinch and need to use a restroom, skip the $5 Starbucks coffee toll and pop into a hotel lobby instead. They’re generally easy to locate and super clean.”

What piece of advice would you give someone that just moved to NYC?
“Get an unlimited MetroCard and commit to exploring different neighborhoods. I like to pick a restaurant or park in a spot I’ve never been to and then do some exploring before and after my visit.”

Take a look at her website to follow her work and find her on her Social Media Channels!

Our Contributor, Helenita Salom, shared with us a delightful place to visit in DUMBO, that we love! We’ve written about it in the past and this is a fresh update!

DUMBO, which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a wonderful, constantly evolving neighborhood in Brooklyn. Very easily accessible by the “F” train if you are coming from Manhattan, it is one of my favorite neighborhood for its charm, unique stores, beautiful views of Lower Manhattan, and extremely friendly walkable streets.

It has also been, for a number of years now, a growing tech start-up scene — but more about this, as well as the other charms of DUMBO, in another post perhaps!

What drew me to DUMBO for this visit was none other than Burrow, a French pastry shop with Japanese influences owned by Ayako Kurokawa.

“Ayako Kurokawa is a patissier, a pastry sculptor, and a food stylist in NYC. She picks her inspirations from her restaurant experiences, Brooklyn life, and day dreaming in the subway.

Her pastry recipes are based on classic French recipes, but are developed with the Japanese and American influences she had growing up. She developed the portrait and sculpture cakes from her love for stone carving and clay sculpting.”

I first came across Burrow on Instagram about one year ago. I saw a picture Burrow had posted of a Mer-man. That’s right, a fully iced sugar cookie shaped and decorated like a male mermaid. Immediately I knew I had to make a trip out to DUMBO and visit this bakery for myself and check out this superbly made portrait cookie of a mer-man.

Located on Jay Street inside the lobby of an old standard industrial looking building, is Burrow. I almost completely missed it on my first visit down there.

Once inside Burrow though, you immediately feast your eyes on beautiful seasonal cakes, cookies and many more treats. It all spans far beyond just the portrait cookies which, from what I understand, you order in bulk in advance and aren’t sold in the store. I must say the charm of Burrow did not disappoint.

I have been numerous times since my first visit last year, and among my favorite is the strawberry short cake. Light, creamy and just enough sugar to leave you satisfied, yet not in a food coma, this is a must have if it’s available.

If you are a fan of different textures in your dessert you will enjoy this too, as it has a few different layers to it which all complement each other perfectly.

I will most definitely be returning soon.

DUMBO is a fantastic and super cool neighborhood to explore and even stay, if you’re in NYC for a few days.

The 1Hotel opened its first location in Manhattan and is surely one of the best additions to Brooklyn! This hotel is one of our top picks if you’re more a Brooklyn-style traveller.

If you’re looking for a off-the-beaten track spot to go at night, St. Ann’s Warehouse is the place to go! They not only showcase the most unique concerts and theater performances, but the place is breathtaking. It’s located right by the East River and was a former Church in the 1980’s.

Be sure to save some time to just talk around the place and be sure to take that perfect picture of the Manhattan Skyline.

Oh! And even though quite touristy, be sure to see Jane’s Carrousel, just a few steps from the warehouse.

Hours:
Monday – Friday: 9am – 6pm
Saturday 1pm – 5pm

Location: 68 Jay Street, #119

The other night we walked into Ray’s Candy Store with a group of friends and we we were lucky enough to bump into Ray himself. It was not only a huge honor to meet him, but so much fun too!

As you pass by, you might not even pay attention to it, since it’s doesn’t have a gorgeous, new, fresh façade! It’s actually a small entrance, but the bright yellow colors might jump out at you! Don’t hesitate and step in! You’ll be warmly greeted!

“That is a superb egg cream.” ~ Anthony Bourdain

The store has been opened since 1974 and they surely make some of the best milkshakes, deep fried Oreos, ice creams, hotdogs and a bunch of other yummy stuff!

We also shot a super fun YouTube video there, about the Most Famous NYC Desserts, if you want to check it out!

It’s the perfect spot when you just want to splurge on your calories and have enjoy the good moments of life!

Not only everything there is to-die-for, but Ray and his beautiful wife are simply the best hosts ever. Believe it or not, they are opened 24h, since the day they opened the place. Amazing!

And, on the image below, is our Founder, Fernanda with Ray! She invaded the counter area the night she was there with friends and started doing funny Boomerangs with him.

You don’t believe us? Take a close look. That’s what happens after eating too much sugar! Kids…lol!

Woops! Bakeshop: A Neighborhood Bakeshop In Williamsburg

Dining Woops Bakeshop Williamsburg Façade

Our Founder, Fê Paronetto, loves working from a cute Bakeshop in Williamsburg called Woops! BakeShop.

Dining Woops Bakeshop Williamsburg Façade

Woops! Bakeshop was founded in 2012 in New York City. Like many of the amazing store today, Woops started with a pop-up shop at Bryant Park’s Holiday Shops and after the huge success, they began expanding.

They started by making the famous macarons and today have a selection of over 30 yummy artisanal pastries inspired in their tireless travels around the world exploring what each place offers best!

We are always in search of the best soy chai in New York, and the one at Woops is Fê’s number one. She loves adding a bit of honey to make it a bit sweeter, since she’s got a sweet-tooth! Their mozzarella with olive pesto sandwich is a great pick for a quick afternoon bite!

You can find them in some of the coolest neighborhoods through out the U.S. But, you’d certainly think they are a small local vendor, with an amazing small bakeshop and to-die-for goodies. They kept the “local” vibe and it’s certainly what makes the difference.

As they explain:

“Although we have expanded quite a bit since our debut, we put in extra effort to keep a close relationship with our local communities. Nothing is more satisfying or heartwarming to us than creating a space in which people can connect, relax, and enjoy the “sweeter” side of life.”

The Williamsburg location is the one in NY we love the most. Their décor is super cozy and welcoming, all cool Brooklynites go there and the food is obviously fantastic. Plus, they are super friendly with freelance people sticking around to work, so they have plugs all over the shop, making sure can hang around for a while!

You’ll probably bump into Fernanda their, since this bakeshop in Williamsburg one of her top spots to work from!

It you’re in the hood, be sure to curiously walk through the streets and experience the local vibe.

You might want to go to the waterfront, to see Manhattan’s skyline and take a few Instagram-worthy shots. For lunch or dinner, try the Italian restaurant, Lilia, but be sure to book way in advance, since the waiting list extends a full month.

If you’re in the shopping fever, be sure to explore these 3 fantastic vintage stores with brands like Missoni, Oscar de la Renta, Stella McCartney and you might even bump into a Chanel ‘relic’.

We do know that many people come to New York and are so addicted to sports and fitness that they search for the best local gyms. Try Renzo Gracie’s Fight Academy Muay Thai class. Certainly our pick!

When night comes, go see a show at Brooklyn Steel, Brooklyn’s latest venue.

Location: 549 Driggs Avenue

We love the Catskills region of upstate New York. Moreover, we are also fascinated in exploring abandoned spots where there once was an entire booming scene of people and life!

It’s incredible to learn what happened to these places. Why it became forgotten and to be able to walk through and register what it has transformed into.

If you L-O-V-E photography books and these abandoned locations, then you’ll love this book! It’s called “The Borscht Belt: Revisiting the Remains of America’s Jewish Vacationland”, by Marisa Scheinfeld.

It takes place in the Catskills Mountain Region, in upstate New York. In addition, it has some of the most intriguing images that will entice your curiosity.

Below is an excerpt from Marisa’s website where she explains with more details what this project is about.

“Today the Borscht Belt is recalled through the nostalgic lens of summer swims, Saturday night dances, and comedy performances. But its current state, like that of many other formerly glorious regions, is nothing like its earlier status.

Forgotten about and exhausted, much of its structural environment has been left to decay. The Borscht Belt, which features essays by Stefan Kanfer and Jenna Weissman Joselit, presents Marisa Scheinfeld’s photographs of abandoned sites. There, resorts, hotels, and bungalow colonies once boomed in the Catskill Mountain region of upstate New York.

The book assembles images Scheinfeld has shot inside and outside locations that once buzzed with life as year-round havens for generations of people. Some of the structures have been lying abandoned for periods ranging from four to twenty years, depending on the specific hotel or bungalow colony and the conditions under which it closed.

Other sites have since been demolished or repurposed. This makes this book an even more significant documentation of a pivotal era in American Jewish history.

The Borscht Belt presents a contemporary view of more than forty hotel and bungalow sites. From entire expanses of abandoned properties to small lots containing drained swimming pools, the remains of the Borscht Belt era now lie forgotten, overgrown, and vacant.

In the absence of human activity, nature has reclaimed the sites, having encroached upon or completely overtaken them. Many of the interiors have been vandalized or marked by paintball players and graffiti artists.

Each ruin lies radically altered by the elements and effects of time. Scheinfeld’s images record all of these developments.”

Take a look at Marisa’s countless upcoming events. These are great opportunities to meet her and get your book signed!

She is an extremely sweet person, besides obviously, extremely talented.

You will love her!

New York City is know for the myriad of creatives spread through out the 5 Boroughs. The list of names with these artists is extensive and we love meeting them!

One of the names you should keep in mind, is Grace Kang. She started her successful career as a fashion buyer and worked for the biggest retailers like Saks, Bloomingdale’s and Barney’s. But, her childhood passion for stationary eventually came back in full force. So, after receiving awards as “Buyer of the Year”, Grace was read for her next challenge.

Moreover, she opened her first Pink Olive store in 2007, in the East Village. Today, she has other 4 location: East Village, in Manhattan, 2 in Brooklyn in Williamsburg and Park Slope and a last location upstate NY in Cold Spring.

Through out this journey, Grace extended her business. She created Olive School that focuses in empowering other artists to build a strong brand and work to make their product ‘retail ready’. In addition, she also launched OliveBox – a monthly subscription service directed to the paper-lovers out there.

Pink Olive is a great place to buy every thing from baby gifts, distinctive letterpress cards, handmade jewelry, to original artwork, books and fabulous vintage finds.

“Pink Olive is more than an ordinary gift shop. It’s a creative place with a mission to inspire giving and beautiful living. Let your imagination sparkle!”

In fact, her team has “the eye” it takes to make the brand and the store stand out! So, you will definitely find the perfect gift for every occasion – baby showers, birthdays, pregnancy, love, marriage, holidays, and the “just because” moments!

Similarly, if you’re not NYC-based or if you don’t have time to go to one of Pink Olive’s neighborhood gift shop, but need something specific, you can purchase online!

Plus, if you decide to pass by the Brooklyn store, you can just extend your visit and grab a delicious coffee at Freehold, in Williamsburg!

In the East Village, we love Hi Collar, and in the West Village, try a charming secret spot called The Elk. And still, close to the Park Slope location, grab a coffee and a chocolate at The Chocolate Room.

Now, if you decide to explore Cold Spring, in upstate New York, let our experts help you out and plan the perfect weekend! On the other hand, for arrangements for Corporate travel, we can also assist you and your team.

Hours: Check online for store hours of each location.

Locations:
439 East 9th Street, East Village
30 Charles Street, West Village
167 Fifth Avenue, Park Slope
80 Main Street, Cold Spring
