Must-See Jazz Spots in Harlem

Nightlife Bars Jazz Spots Harlem Fernanda Paronetto Ze Luis Oliveira

We visited and shot a pretty cool YouTube video at a few of the must-see Jazz spots in Harlem with a super special guest: Zé Luis Oliveira. Come explore these fantastic spots with us!

Harlem is a neighborhood that is constantly growing and new businesses are opening all the time. Real Estate is also booming and prices are going up!

But, it’s also known for being the best neighborhood if you’re into true Jazz. Why? Because some of the most traditional jazz spots, where world-famous musicians have performed, are hidden throughout the streets.

I decided to invite an extremely special guest to host this YouTube video with me! Zé Luis Oliveira that is not only an amazing musician, but is also a composer, producer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist. Zé carries a few Grammy nominations too and knows absolutely everything about the Jazz scene. So, it was impossible to not invite him!

We had a musical chat with him at 3 different-style must-see Jazz spots in Harlem: Minton’s Playhouse, Shrine Harlem and Paris Blues.

So, Henry Minton founded Minton’s Playhouse in 1938, but did you know that he was a tenor saxophonist, just like our guest, Zé Luis? Yup! Plus, all the big names like Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald have played there.

In the 1940’s when the bebop jazz style was created, musicians gathered for musical sessions at Minton’s to play and record. On the video above, Zé told us a bit about the bebop, so check it out!

As they say: “The energy and spirit of the Playhouse are a unique and a perfect way to continue your already festive evening. Minton’s Playhouse is home to only the exceptional musicians who will sweep you away with outstanding performances. The highest quality music with the highest quality service and drinks in a fun, one of a kind establishment.”

Oh! Minton’s is not only a great place for Jazz nights, but they also have a restaurant called The Cecil Steakhouse.

So, go there for dinner, before the show!

Shrine

Nightlife Bars Jazz Spots Harlem Shrine

The Shrine, is a bit different from the other spots we visited, since it a modern/contemporary world music and Jazz venue. It opened only in 2007 as a multimedia arts and culture venue.

“We are dedicated to art and culture in all mediums: film, theater, dance, and live music. Shrine World Music Venue’s mission is to establish a positive creative atmosphere for both artists and audiences from all backgrounds.”

They host mostly great emerging artists and musicians, that are not only focused in Jazz, but also rhythms and styles, like funk! But, they also have some amazing established artists every now and them!

They are considered one of the top 10 jazz spots to visit in NYC, so be sure to go and check it out!

Paris Blues

Nightlife Bars Jazz Spots Harlem Paris Blues Samuel Hargress

We finished off in grand style! We were hosted at Paris Blues by the super well-known owner, Sam! It was truly an honor to meet and have a great musical talk with him!

Paris Blues, in the heart of Harlem and founded by Samuel Hargress Jr, or Sam like I mentioned, back in 1968. They have Jazz 7 nights a week, no cover, free food and great drinks, right?

People go there to listen not only to the super traditional 20’s Jazz, but also to some rhythms of the 90’s funk!

They have a full bar, so you’ll be sure to enjoy every single moment and every single music, with your favorite drink beside you! Have fun!

Where To Go For The Best Cocktails In Brooklyn?

Nightlife Bars Top Cocktail Spots In Brooklyn Rabbit Hole Fernanda Paronetto Jared Zuckerman

New York is known for having some of the coolest bars and best signature cocktails in the world! So, we decided to show you a few of my favorite spots, serving the top cocktails in Brooklyn, to start your drinking adventures throughout NYC!

Many of you come to New York in search of the hottest bars and crazy cocktails in town! So, due to countless requests, for the very 1st episode of our 2nd YouTube Season, we decided to shoot a short a sweet video about 3 of our favorite bars to start off your journey to find your favorite spot!

I, once again, invited my friend Jared Zuckerman, a travel and food expert, to come explore NY with me, off the beaten path!

We visited 3 places in Brooklyn, with fantastic cocktail: Rabbit Hole, a true local hotspot, Lighthouse BK where we tried their signature cocktails and saw how they insert sustainability into their business and finally Huckleberry Bar, with their seasonally driven menu and famous outdoor patio!

We got a bit tipsy along the way, but I think that that was the point, right?

Oh! And don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to our channel!!!

Disclosure: Do not EVER drink and drive! Call an Uber or just head to the subway for a quick and commute back home!

The Rabbit hole is truly one of the secret gems in Brooklyn. The spot is over 10 years old, but it didn’t start off as a restaurant/bar. The owner, Lawrence Elliott, opened a bakery called The Read Café, with the most delicious homemade pastries. In no time, it became the neighborhood’s to-go spot, filled with the local crowd.

Their pastries are still known for being fantastic and their best sellers are the cookies, muffins and scones.

But, today we can to talk about their cocktail bar! We decided to try two drinks and the result was as expected: super soft, well-balanced and flavorful drinks!

We had the French Marguerita made with tequila, cherry liquor, ginger and garnished cherry, and The Smoke, that is a mixture of Laphroaig – a Single Malt peated Whisky, clove syrup and lemon juice with burning stick of rosemary.

It’s on the top of the list for drinks. Plus, they also offer an amazing brunch, lunch and dinner menu and their outdoor garden is perfect for the warmer months!

The 2nd place we visited was Lighthouse Brooklyn. We’re written about them in the past, and decided to shoot a video since we love it! This spot is also a winner for two reasons: First, their cocktails, of course; and two, their Mediterranean inspired menu is out of this world!

We spoke to the owners, and brothers, Naama and Assaf, that showed us the reasons of why their spot is always overflowing with great people.

The entire story about Lighthouse is focused on sustainability and locally sourced ingredients and the concept that everything is recyclable. As they say: “We recycle, compost, and collaborate with other green minded organizations to grow, improve and educate ourselves, our staff, our guests.”

Well, now to the drinks…Assaf prepared the Mezcalito, made with Mezcal, jalapeno, agave, fresh lime and salt and the Summer Sangria, with gin, St. Germain, sake and seasonal fruit.

The Sangria was super refreshing and the Mezcalito is perfect if you’re into spicy, stong cocktails, but nonetheless, smooth to drink!

We have to confess that we did have their mezze platter and I do recommend it blindly. It’s extremely tasty. It has smoked labne, hummus, tahini + arissa, charred eggplant labne, olives and a hot staff.

Now…headed to our 3rd and final stop…

And for our grand finale, we headed to Huckleberry Bar, that is famous for its seasonally craft cocktails!

We had the talented and beautiful Serena doing a few of her favorite drinks for us!

We tried the Strawberry Field, obviously named after the Beatles’ song, made with house-infused Dill Vodka, wódka, house-made strawberry syrup, lemon juice!

The other drink was The Sun Also Rises – a great mix of square one botanical vodka, Amaro Nonino, yellow Chartreuse, cinnamon syrup, Angostura bitters and prosecco.

Their menu is quite entertaining with very peculiar names for their drinks, like: Message in a Bottle, Drinking at the Gym, Bahia Via Brooklyn, and my favorite, I Demand Satisfaction! Pretty curious, right?

Why go there?

“Though it’s just about the best bar in East Williamsburg for a date, the atmosphere is just as dynamic as the menu; it’s the perfect place to enjoy a sunny day from the shade of our lush garden, to relax by candlelight on weeknights, or to get your nightlife fix on the weekends with some of Brooklyn’s best DJs.”

Brooklyn Kura: Hand-Crafted Sake On Tap

Nightlife Bars Brooklyn Kura Industry City Sake On Tap

A well-crafted sake is surely indescribable. Brooklyn Kura is a brewery and tap room in Industry City, serving sake on tap! Quite special right?

I’m a huge sake lover and really enjoy trying sake not only in different spots of New York, but also when I travel.

When we were shooting two YouTube video about Industry City, one about Teressa Folgia’s hats and another one about 5 great spots to visit, Teressa introduced us to Brandon Doughan, the head brewer and co-founder of Brooklyn Kura.

The space was actually closed when we passed by, but Brandon was super polite to let us in, teach us about sake and show us how it’s done. And, yes, we did get a sneak peek into their brewing process and, of course, we had some sake!

Nightlife Bars Brooklyn Kura Industry City

One of the cool things about Brooklyn Kura is that their menu changes every now and then with different sakes that are sold by the glass and carafe.

Plus, they have a few delicious small dishes to pair with your choice of sake, like cheese, charcuterie and a few other delicious options. If you’re into tasting, it’s also a great place to stop by!

Plus, it’s a fantastic spot to host a private event or even a corporate gathering – and we can help you out!

If Industry City is a bit far for your to always head that way to grab your favorite sake bottle by Brooklyn Kura, you can find them in countless other spots.

Nightlife Bars Brooklyn Kura Industry City Sake On Tap

What is Sake?

With only 4 very simple ingredients – rice, water, yeast and koji – these talented brewers are able to extract the most amazing variation of aromas and flavors.

How it all started?

“During a chance meeting in Tokyo in 2013, Brian Polen and Brandon  discovered a shared passion for high quality sake. One glass led to two, which led to many more.

They took courses, traveled to Japan, apprenticed at breweries, and began to develop their own recipes. They sought out experts and absorbed all they could.

Before long, an idea began to form – a sake brewery in New York…”

What to expect?

“At Brooklyn Kura, we are committed to a new tradition of American Craft Sake. Building on more than 1,000 years of Japanese brewing history, we’re demystifying sake and making it more accessible. Our sake is brewed right here in New York City, hand-crafted with the highest quality ingredients.”

Justin Teodoro: Statue of Liberty Illustration Gone Viral

Curiosities Insider Interviews Justin Teodoro Statue of Liberty Illustration

Justin Teodoro is the powerful  and creative name behind the Statue of Liberty’s illustration that went viral a few weeks back! We talked to him about his breathtaking career, his inspirations and discovered his 7 secret spots in NYC.

Curiosities Insider Interviews Justin Teodoro Statue of Liberty Illustration

A few weeks back, the social media universe went wild with a beautiful illustration created by the NY-based illustrator, Justin Teodoro.

In a powerful response to the first lady, Melania Trump’s Zara jacket, which had “I really don’t care. Do you?”, written on the back, Justin’s creative, powerful and positive reply, moved the world.

The outrageous act that has been moving people to stand up against the zero tolerance policy of family separations at the boarder, led by President Trump, was spread through out the internet.

Even those that chose to be isolated for the political scene, were touched.

Like us, countless other media platforms and Instagram users, reposted Justin’s illustration, supporting the cause.

Our interview below, will show you more about Justin’s story, career, conquests, inspirations, finishing off with 7 of his secret spots in NYC!

Curiosities Insider Interviews Justin Teodoro Kevin Lamarque Reuters

1. Can you tell me a bit about your background? Where you’re from? What you studied? Where you’ve worked?

I’m from Vancouver, BC Canada – born and raised there. I did my undergrad at University of Toronto and after I graduated in 2003 I moved back to Vancouver to figure out what to do for a career.

I’ve always drawn and loved art, but never knew how to make that happen as a “job”. I was always into fashion but, that seemed so far away to me as a career.

I then found about the Associates Fashion program at Parsons and with the support of my family applied and got in. So, I moved to NYC in 2005 to pursue a career in fashion.

I worked as a womenswear designer for 8 years for brands as Tuleh, Cynthia Steffe and Kenneth Cole, before I made a career change to focus on my own illustrations and art.

Curiosities Insider Interviews Justin Teodoro Installation

2. Was the Barney’s window in NY your first major fashion project? Tell us a bit about this project! Or, tell us about your first major project that boosted your career.

My first big project as an illustrator was probably working with Lorenzo Martone and his brand Martone Cycling – we met through mutual friends and I began doing illustrations for him.

That led to us working together on a small capsule range of illustrated tees for Martone Cycling, then a pop up in NYC and finally an artwork for a window display when Martone Cycling was sold at Colette in Paris. That was a major first for me.

I’ve worked with Barneys NY a few times – first on their website doing a few illustrations stories. Those projects led me to working with Barneys New York Japan in 2015 for their holiday campaign. Another major milestone in my career – I created artwork for their holiday campaign and was invited to Tokyo for the holiday launch.

Curiosities Insider Interviews Justin Teodoro Colette Lorenzo Martone3. You’ve done so many amazing works around the world like Colette in Paris, the subways in Tokyo! I believe you obviously enjoyed them all, but is there one that you’re exceptionally proud of and would love to relive it? Why?

I’ve been lucky to have worked on some pretty amazing projects with really great brands, so it is hard to choose.

I guess though I would always cherish the projects that allowed not only my work to travel internationally but me as well!

So, my project with Barneys in Tokyo and recently doing artwork for Six Senses in Kaplankaya, Turkey was amazing. It’s been great to expose yourself and your eyes to what is out there.

Curiosities Insider Interviews Justin Teodoro Tokyo Subway Barneys New York

4. The entire Social Media universe saw your latest illustration of the Statue of Liberty with the child. We were one of the hundreds of accounts that share it. Can you give us a taste of how the idea can about and how the creation process was? Did you expect this amazing repercussion?

Curiosities Insider Interviews Justin Teodoro

It really came about from me just reacting to all the news that week – I remember it being so hard to hear all the stories of these families being separated and then seeing all those images in the news.

It was hard not to react.

I think I tried to do something that felt true to what I wanted to say, but also to my art and I think I just wanted to put something out there that was perhaps positive, a sense of hope in all of this sadness, anger and messiness.

So, it kind of just came naturally – I don’t remember exactly what the process was but putting the jacket with what I think we all wanted it to say on the statue of Liberty seemed to be my creative reply.

The reaction was pretty amazing to see – definitely all the viral attention was amazing.

But, it was much more amazing to me to have people email/message me to say thank you for doing this artwork, that it gave them a sense of hope and light in all this darkness.

That really touched me and made me realize that the work had taken on a more powerful meaning that I ever anticipated.

5. Is there any exciting upcoming project you can share with us first hand?!

A few projects in work, so stay tuned!

6. Can people find your work in NY and also to purchase online?

I have a few t-shirts/prints available on my site.

Curiosities Insider Interviews Justin Teodoro Janes Carousel Dumbo

7. What are you +7 top secret spots in NY you love to go with friends, or for work inspiration?

  • Communitea Café – A neighborhood coffee spot in LIC;
  • FIT Museum – For fashion inspiration;
  • Lucky Strike – A classic NYC happy hour in SoHo;
  • Tuffet – A great bar in Brooklyn for cocktails and drinks;
  • McNally Jackson – A great local bookstore/magazines and coffee spot in SoHo;
  • Strand Bookstore – A classic and has an amazing vintage book collection;
  • Blick Arts – I’m a sucker for an art store and am always here getting more paint or pens.

Take a look at a few cultural activities in New York, if you’re into arts, music, museums, etc!

Thank you Justin, for the amazing work, your strong voice and talent, and for sharing with us a bit of your life!

Keep up the amazing work!

Drinks and Food Crawl in Brooklyn with Eat and Be Full

Dining Drinks Food Crawling Williamsburg Brooklyn Jared Zuckerman EatandbeFull Loosie Rouge Fernanda Paronetto

I had the greatest time with Jared, from Eat and Be Full, shooting for our YouTube Channel! He took me to some of his favorite food and drink spots in Williamsburg, Brooklyn! I’m sure you’ll love the video and have a fantastic time with us! We did laugh a lot!

I met Jared Zuckerman back in 2015 in a foodie event I went to with another dear friend called Jabber Al-Bihani, founder of Komeeda! And, I have to say, I was instantly captivated by his charm and bustling energy!

Jared is the Owner & Founder of Food and City, a consulting and brand development company who has flooded social media with some of today’s most viral food concepts. He works with some of NY’s top restaurants and is also an influencers as @EatandBeFull on Instagram.

It took some time to actually reconnect after meeting him, but after we did, we just stayed in touch! The conversation of shooting a video was going on for a few months, until we were finally able to actually find a date in common that worked for both of us. Phiuf!

And, voilá! We hope you love the final result, as we did!

Below are the places we went to and we’re sure you’ll get quite a few laughs out of the video!

The Bedford

Dining Drinks Food Crawling Williamsburg Brooklyn Jared Zuckerman EatandbeFull The Bedford

I’ve written about The Bedford a while back and have been there quite a couple of times myself. It’s truly a great spot, with a peculiar story, amazing food – not only for meat eaters but also for vegans and vegetarians – and delicious cocktails.

One of the pretty interesting facts about the place is that it was actually built inside a former garage, and was transformed into a speakeasy and gastropub with an awesome, rustic décor.

We tried one of their bestsellers, the MacNCheesy, which is actually a burger with fried MacNCheese buns holding the it all together, with a delicious sauce! Plus, it’s paired with  French fries! Yum!

The Craic is also one of my to-go bars in Brooklyn and I’m there quite a lot with my friends. Why? Well, it’s surely a “locals-only” spot, they have a gorgeous full bar, a pool table and a juke box with the most fantastic playlists. It’s a place easy to simply pass by and not see it, so be sure to pay attention when looking for it!

I have to confess, every time I’m there I’m mostly hanging around the pool table, hahaha! Yes, I love playing pool and I’m pretty good at it too.

Jared is also there quite often, so much so that every time he walks in and sits at the bar, the barmen know exactly what to serve him: Old Fashion made with bourbon. I had The 488, made with Titos vodka, St. Germain, lemon juice, agave, fresh mint, strawberry, topped with a splash of soda water.

Oh, and they have a daily Happy Hour ‘til 8pm.

They have Trivia nights every Wednesday from 8pm – 10pm.

And, if you’re into singing and showing your artistic soul, they have a karaoke night every Friday, from 11pm – 3am, hosted by The Kings of Karaoke. Not sure about this? Well, try their Jello Shots to give you courage to go on stage!

This is for the “sweet tooth” crowd out there, like us! Sweethaus is a sweet haven, so be sure to carefully look at everything they have, before purchasing!

To start, the place is very charming with a “vintagy” style décor. They are well-known for their cupcakes. I’m personally always looking for the best Red Velvet cupcakes in town and their Red Velvet is truly to-die-for.

Some other bestsellers are: Vanilla & Chocolate topped with cookie dough, Salted Caramel, and the Everything Cupcake that, as they say, is for the “salty and sweet combo lover! The chocolate cake has bits of caramel, marshmallow and oreo.  It’s then frosted with peanut buttercream and rolled in pretzels, salted caramel pieces, oreos and mini peanut butter cups.”

But wait! There’s more! At the back of the store, they have an insanely huge wall with hundreds of candy bowls to pick from! So be ready to splurge on your diet and put together your candy bag(ssss)!!!

Last, but definitely not least, Loosie Rouge! We adore this hidden spot located in South Williamsburg, an area still relatively free from tourists just like we love!

They have a few difference ambiences. As you walk into the restaurant, Loosie’s Kitchen & Café, it feels like you entering a fantasy world. The restaurant’s décor is beautiful and uplifting, with a skylight ceiling that allows natural light to come in! They serve divine local food, from a menu that changes every few weeks, which we think is pretty awesome!

The bar right next door had a separate entrance, though it’s also internally connected to the restaurant in the back. They have fantastic music and heavenly cocktails.

When we shot the video, I tried the Poached Pear Salad with baby gem, green goddess, blood orange and castelrosso. Jared, a proud meat-eater (hahaha!) had an insane dish – the Loosie’s Fried Chicken, with house pickles, biscuit and hot sauce.

There is actually so many things to try and new dishes every couple of weeks, that it’s a place you can go back again, and again, and again!

For the perfect date night, bring a bottle of red, and sit on the bar stools for a view of the kitchen and sit side by side with your date.”

The owner and chef, Sung Park, is truly an artist, in the kitchen. His bold and innovative cooking style is surely what makes the difference for his guests, and obviously, what makes them come back.

Erie Basin

Curiosities Insider Interviews Kelley Louise Erie Basin Jewelry Antiques

“An exceptionally well-curated collection of jewelry (both vintage and new pieces that were crafted using antique stones), pretty much everything you see at Erie Basin is one of a kind. Even if you’re not ready to invest in your next piece of fine jewelry, they’re worth the follow on Instagram for some daydreaming.”

Launched in 2006, the store is located in the far end of Brooklyn in a neighborhood we adore called Red Hook! They are “specialized in antique and vintage jewelry, but also have a selection of furniture, art, and objects dating from the 18th to mid 20th century.”

The brand is, up to date, basically a one-man show, and was founded by Russell Whitmore. An avid collector and antique lover, Whitmore launched in 2014 a fantastic collection around antique gemstones he has collected and many are exclusive, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Favorite Park: Fort Tyron Park

Curiosities Insider Interviews Andrew Chen My Inspire Project Fort Tyron Park

Fort Tyron Park is indeed quite a ride from the heart of Manhattan, but it would never disappoint you. Once you arrive at the Remnants of Billings Estate and the massively arched structure known as the Billings Arcade, you feel like you are in Europe already. This park is surely one of the city’s most beautiful outdoor pieces of art.”

We love it too! Previously owned by no one less than John D. Rockefeller, Jr., in the year of 1931, he gifted the property to the City of New York. What a gift, right?

Construction started and 4 years later, in 1935, Rockefeller and Robert Moses – the “master builder” of mid-20th century, officialized the park as a public space for everyone to be able to visit! Lucky us!

A Secret NY Music Gig at Hell Phone Curated by Us!

Our Experts Recaps Sofar Sounds Hell Phone Brooklyn BTSNYC

On April 28th, we curated another Sofar Sounds NYC! This time, it happened at a super trendy speakeasy called Hell Phone, in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn! And, we KICKED ASS that night! Check it out!

We love New York’s music scene. The city is the home of an infinite number of amazing musicians and artists!

Every 3 months or so, we curate a spectacular live music event in partnership with the team at Sofar Sounds NYC.

We choose the 3 bands that are performing during the night….and honestly? WE KICK ASS, believe us!

On Saturday, April 28th, we had a fantastic night with a mix of different style musicians. The event was hosted at a pretty awesome speakeasy bar in East Williamsburg, called Hell Phone. It’s in the back of a coffee shop called Ange Noir Café.

Way in the back of the coffee shop, you’ll see a beautiful red phone cabinet…open the door and walk in to explore! Be ready for a great night!

For this show, we brought in to perform:

  • Jair Oliveira: a famous Brazilian singer, composer and producer. He is a former student at the renowned Berklee College of Music, in Boston and plays MPB (Música Popular Brasileira). In other words, traditional Brazilian Pop Music;
  • Olivia Chindamo: a beautiful Australian vocalist! She’s best known for her natural and effortless ability to improvise or “scat”. As the 2016 Bell Award winner for “Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year”;
  • Kenny John: a very special musician our Founder, Fê Paronetto, met one day passing through Union Square subway station in NYC. He was playing the trumpet and she was in awe! Kenny learned to play the trumpet and an early age and today brightens up the day of thousands of commuters in NYC, playing Jazz and Soul music!

And…we had a surprise! We had a special guest joining in for a song! Aline Muniz is good friends with and was invited by Jair Oliveira to sing one song on stage with him!
