Coping With the Stresses of Working in the Big Apple

People crossing the street on 5th Avenue in Manhattan, New York City - Behind the Scenes NYC

Are you having a hard time balancing your daily life? It’s pretty hard if you’re working in the Big Apple day in, day out! So, let us give you some tips!

People crossing the street on 5th Avenue in Manhattan, New York City - Behind the Scenes NYC

Working in the Big Apple, like doing pretty much anything else in the City, can be a lot more intense than doing it elsewhere.

You’re usually working in more competitive environments, dealing with tougher commutes, working longer hours, and getting less time at home.

For some people, it can be the perfect environment to get the very best out of their potential, but it can come with a lot of stress.

Here, we’re going to look at steps you can take to address it. Working in the Big Apple might just get a little bit easier now!

Master the commute

If you’re driving in the city, you really need to prioritize your parking. There are apps that can help you find the most available and cost-effective parking options near your workplace.

But, you might also want to consider opting for other kinds of transportation, given how bad traffic can be.

Relying on public transportation a little more often can take away the stress of driving as well as help you find a better commute. There are pros and cons for both, so be sure to evaluate them and figure out what works best for you.

New York is known for its subway system – which get you pretty much anywhere. So, you might want to let you car in the garage a few times a week.

Be surrounded by like-minded people

Sometimes, the pressure of feeling like you’re in it alone can get to you.

When that happens, you have to look at your surroundings and look at your peers and make sure that you have those who can identify with your struggles, your goals, and offer you the support that you need.

Coworking and social spots like the Freehold – that we enjoy so much – can be not only great places to get some work done, but can be excellent places to meet and share a drink with those who can become fellow travelers on the road of the hustle in future.

The city is all full of other activities to find your “peeps” – from hot yoga, pilates and running, to painting and cooking classes. It’s easier to find like-minded people in environments you love since it’s an easy way to start a conversation with someone new!

Take some time to relax

It might sound easier said than done, with deadlines and pressure on all sides, but you have to be able to find the time to center yourself and find a bit of peace and calm.

If you can schedule a little time every day for some mindfulness meditation, and even a little something from CBDistillery, to help calm you in the middle of a busy and demanding day.

Scheduling it in advance allows you to make sure that you don’t end up pencilling in anything there that might clash with it and stop you from getting that all-important relaxation time.

Also, another great way is exploring places with meditation classes in town to relax! Take a look at Inscape, for example!

This beautiful community space offers not only meditation and relaxation classes, but also mind opening events and a great store! You can browse and find some of the best modern wellness products.

Get some more movement in your routine

Exercise is by far one of the best things when it comes to dealing with stress. You can work out all the tension in the body and the rush of endorphins can be a huge mood booster.

Slot in some gym time before you get home, find some exercises to do at your desk, or get a little more movement into your commute, be it by walking, biking, or otherwise.

It can help you feel refreshed, be it at the beginning of the workday, so you can get more done, or at the end, so that you can really relax when you get home.

Working in NYC isn’t easy, but it can be worth it. Just make sure that you take the time to address those stresses, or they can and will overwhelm you.

Spice Up Your Life With Salsa Classes in NYC

Fitness Health Salsa Classes in NYC Joel Salsa Instructors

After researching Salsa classes in NYC, I came across Joel Salsa Company. They were offering a cool bootcamp package for beginners and I didn’t need to take a partner with me! Yes, this can be a setback when signing up for Salsa classes.

Ay, no hay que llorar
Que la vida es un carnaval
Que es más bello vivir cantando…” ?

…sings Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa, in one of my favorite songs.

Dancing, as we already know, is great for our physical and mental health. I grew up taking dancing classes, but Salsa is definitely taking it to another level and I always wanted to learn it. Ahhh, my Latin blood…

Some people say original Salsa was created in NYC instead of a Hispanic country, after the influx of Latin and Caribbean immigrants in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The immigrants mixed bits of other ballroom and club dances into a new style. So yes, there are different styles of Salsa. Since I was in NYC, I chose this new style over Cuban or others out there.

After researching a little bit, I came across Joel Salsa Company. They were offering a cool bootcamp package for beginners and I didn’t need to take a partner with me! Yes, this can be a setback when signing up for Salsa classes.

I was not sure if I would have the “hips” that it takes to dance, so I signed up for just one class to try it out. After the 1st class I loved it so much that I registered for the full package: 8 classes, once a week.

I confess I wore sneakers in my first class! As soon as the instructors saw them, they asked me to come with a flat, ballerina or ballroom shoes for the next classes. So, now you know that sneakers are not good for dancing Salsa! Hahaha!

About the instructors:

My instructors were actually the founders of the company: Joel Dominguez and the co-owner, Maria Palmieri. But, they do have a great team that really knows their moves, so don’t worry!

Joel has been part of the dance world for more than twenty years, competing, teaching and performing throughout various parts of the US and Mexico.

Maria, on the other hand, is certified as a professional dance teacher by DVIDA® – Dance Vision International Dancers Association. She’s won dance competitions like the Manhattan Latin Championships, where she actually got 1st place as a newcomer.

Both instructors taught class together. Maria taught the steps to us girls, while Joel taught the guys.

First we practiced the steps alone. By the end of each class we put all the steps and movements together and danced with a partner. A rotation system was used so everyone had the chance to dance with a someone.

Every week we could see visible improvements in our “Salsa skills”, but new and more difficult steps were being taught too. The speed we danced got faster each week, and do prepare yourself to spin a lot during this Salsa bootcamp.

Fitness Health Salsa Classes in NYC Joel Salsa Company

The company has plenty of events happening in other venues around town, where students are welcome to join. Most of them are at different Salsa clubs throughout Manhattan. It’s extremely restorative, funny and fun.

I just felt that Salsa was my thing, from day 1!

I “graduated” from my beginner salsa classes in NYC and I couldn’t wait to start the advanced classes. At that time they didn’t offer online classes, but now they do. Hooray! So, if you can’t attend it in person, you can still register for the online classes.

Are you excited? I want to do it all over again!

Joel Salsa also offers Bachata and Cha Cha Cha. For more info about dates, prices and other information, check their website.

Get inspired by the Latin rhythms and dance your hips off. It’s truly contagious, so just have fun!

Don’t forget to share your first steps with us! And if you enjoyed these salsa classes in NYC, you might want to test your limits at a fitness dance by Body Conceptions or just try the hottest fitness classes you need you know in NYC!

I’ve always loved rock climbing, but besides looking very easy, it’s really not. I’m not too good with heights either, but Brooklyn Boulders equipment makes you feel completely safe and tied up!

It’s surely not only a physical activity. I believe it’s even more a mental challenge, than physical.

They offer different classes that are 60-min long for all different levels, besides being able to have your own personal trainer and still, a fitness center too.

I loved the 4-week course, with 8 sessions, called Climb Like A Girl! It is “taught by women, for women. Train as a team as you improve your technique, gain climbing power and improve endurance. Each 2-hour session is progressive, carefully designed to holistically develop your abilities.”

Plus, if you have kids, they do have great options for them to have fun!

Let’s start rocking!

A Different Type of NYC Truck: Uprooted Flower Truck

Shop Specialties UpRooted Flower Truck Client

New York City is known for the countless food trucks roaming tirelessly around the city. You can find food trucks, ice cream trucks, juice trucks and even fashion trucks. But, Uprooted Flower Truck is the one and only, flower truck!

Uprooted describes themselves are “NYC’s florist on wheels”, which I think is pretty awesome. They are pioneers in launching this business and we have to agree that if you’re a pioneer in NY, you’ll most likely thrive!

It all started back in April of 2015, the exact month that I actually moved from my hometown São Paulo, Brazil to New York City!! What an exciting month! Hahaha!

Founders Ashley Custer and Kristin Heckler ran a super successful Kickstarter campaign, raised $15,000 and started their entrepreneurial path! And, what a journey!

New York is known for being the birth city of countless successful startups, but is quite tough having a brilliant idea no one has thought about, right?

When I met Ashley, back in February of 2016, she told me that her very first job was working at a flower shop, at the age of 14.  She majored in Criminal Justice at Temple University, but felt totally uninspired with the current social system. When she moved to NY with Kristen, her Co-Founder and Partner, she got back to working with flowers to brighten people’s lives – and also, her own.

On the other hand, Kristen, always had an entrepreneurial spirit. As her first job, she founded a local event planning business in her hometown: Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She studied Women’s Studies and Spanish at Duke University, but chose to follow a career as a Theater Director. That was actually what brought the duo to NYC in 2013. Kristin was going to attend her MFA at The New School. Today, she continues to self-produce theatre as well as working on Uprooted Flower Truck.

So, let’s talk about the truck!

The truck has a floral cooler, electrical system, work counters, and sink with hot water – surely a fully functional florist on wheels! Plus, there is no way to miss it, when it passes by or is parked somewhere around the city. It’s gorgeous and with beautiful bright colors!

Flower bouquets are prepared and sold in three sizes – “the studio”, “the loft”, and “the penthouse” ranging from $12 – $45. Pretty good price for NYC!!!

Are you organizing an event? Needing new ideas of how to “wow” your clients, your team or your friends & family can be quite exhausting. We certainly know how event planning can be crazy! Phiuf! So, besides being able to have all your flower arrangements organized by Uprooted Flower Truck, have you ever thought about actually “booking a truck”? They organize custom floral events including bouquet bars, flower crowns, & branded bloom giveaways.

And, of course, weddings! I love everything about wedding, but the flower decoration is something I always look forward to! Why? Well, I have friends in the flower business in Brazil and became passionate about it! Anyway, their arrangements are certainly the style I want for my own wedding. They’re extremely colorful, with exotic flowers, unique arrangements and that no one will ever have the same! So, talk to the girls to explain what you want for your wedding!

Now, if you’re the type that loves Doing It Yourself (DIY), the girls organize pretty cool workshops to learn how to make the perfect flower arrangements.

You’ll be sure to learn all the tips and tricks behind doing the perfect vase and bouquets. I had an “express” course when we shot the YouTube video and was amazed at little tricks that make all the difference on the final result!

And lastly, if you live in New York and love having you home weekly decorated with beautiful flowers, but like every true New Yorker, you have absolutely no time to refill your vases, take a look at the Uprooted Subscription! Besides saving money, it’ll save you tons of time and fill your home with gorgeous arrangements. As they explain:

“Treat yourself or one of your favorites with a gift that keeps blooming! Choose your delivery dates, tell us about your preferences & we’ll send you the freshest flowers in town!”

We are sure you’ll enjoy it!

If you want to really go “pro”, take a look at the post we wrote about the Flower School in NYC.

Hours & Locations: Uprooted Flower Truck hits the NYC streets Thursday through Sunday each week. Follow them on Instagram and Twitter for exact parking locations and other surprise pop-ups!

It’s not uncommon for a museum to be dedicated to a specific artist, but it is rare for it to be designed and established by the artist himself, in this case Japanese American artist and landscape architect Isamu Noguchi.

In 1985, his Noguchi Museum opened, displaying what he considered the most representative examples of his life’s work and becoming the catalyst for change in the neighborhood.

In addition, a decade earlier, the artist had purchased a small photogravure plant and gas station across from his studio and filled it with his sculptures, architectural models, stage designs, drawings, and furniture designs.

After a major 2004 renovation, the museum now features two floors of indoor exhibition space, indoor-outdoor galleries, and an outdoor sculpture garden. So, temporary exhibits are now part of the programming, and these explore Noguchi’s influence on contemporary culture.

A block away from the Noguchi Museum is the Socrates Sculpture Park, a waterfront park and public art museum.

The location was previously an abandoned landfill and illegal dumpsite, but in 1986 a group of local artists and residents, headed up by artist Mark di Suvero, transformed the four-acre site into a public sculpture museum.

Guests have the option of a self-guided tour or a guided tour, and the organization also offers a farmers market, seasonal outdoor film screenings, and activities such as yoga, capoeira, tai chi, and kayaking and canoeing.

And, throughout the year there are plenty of performances, ranging from dance to theater to opera. Plus, it’s free and open every day of the year.

NYC has plenty places to see contemporary art, but this is the only such museum dedicated to contemporary sculpture.

The Sculpture Center moved to its current location in a former trolley repair shop in 2002, and today this building serves as a sculptural piece in itself.

Artist and designer Maya Lin handled the initial redesign and just a few years ago, Andrew Berman Architects expanded and renovated the building, adding an enclosed courtyard for outdoor exhibitions and events.

Furthermore, unlike many institutions, the Sculpture Center is a non-collecting museum, meaning every year you’ll get to see a fresh batch of experimental, innovative exhibits.

They commission new work, as well as present exhibits by emerging and established artists and also have a series of free public programs and events such as artist talks, open studio days, and film screenings.

Hours:
Thursday – Monday: 11am – 6pm
Closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays

Location: 44-19 Purves Street

Adaptive reuse is a theme when it comes to the locations of LIC arts institutions and the Fisher Landau Center for Art is no exception, housed in a former parachute harness factory.

Designed by the late English architect Max Gordon, the modern museum (which offers free admission) houses the 1,500-work contemporary art collection of Emily Fisher Landau.

Moreover, these includes the work of some of the past 50 years’ most influential artists, like Andy Warhol, Kiki Smith, Glenn Ligon, Cy Twombly, Jasper Johns, Jenny Holzer, and Robert Mapplethorpe, many of whom she supported early in their careers.

Also, on display is Ms. Landau’s 150-piece collection of mid-century furniture designer Warren McArthur, as well as a rotating exhibit series.

Hours:
Thursday – Monday, 12pm – 5pm
Closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays

Location: 38-27 30th Street

Eleventh Street Arts veers from the modern to the traditional, presenting new works of drawings, paintings, and sculptures that invoke, challenge, and celebrate classical tradition.

In addition, Eleventh Street Arts offers a chamber music series, from Chiaroscuro to Bach, and sponsors a resident chamber music artist.

MoMA PS1 became an affiliate of the Museum of Modern Art in 2000. But, it’s actually one of the oldest and largest nonprofit contemporary art institutions in the nation.

They’re located in an abandoned 19th-century public school building, which they often transform into site-specific works. The most well-known of which, may be their annual summer Warm Up. There, a winning entrant turns the open-air courtyard into a temporary, environmentally focused installation that accompanies a music series.

Satisfying their commitment to displaying the world’s most experimental art, past retrospectives have included Mike Kelley, Franz West, and Gordon Matta-Clark.

So, be sure to see light artist James Turrell’s permanent installation “Meeting,” one of his famed skyspaces. Plus, other long-term installations by Sol LeWitt, Cecily Brown, Alan Saret, and Richard Serra.

Hours:
Thursday – Monday: 12pm – 6pm
Closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays

Location: 22-25 Jackson Avenue

Get Fit with World Famous Fight Experts at Renzo Gracie Fight Academy

Fitness Health Renzo Gracie Fight Academy Fernanda Paronetto Daniel Gracie Nica

I worked today from one of the places I love the most, in Williamsburg, when two guys arrived and sat beside me, at the bar. I’m great at starting conversations with random strangers and this time, it lead me to learn more about Renzo Gracie Fight Academy NYC where world famous fight experts meet.

I always say that every cool girl, is half boy. Impossible not to agree, right!? While I was working today from Beco Bar, today I started a conversation with two guys.

These guys were Daniel Gracie and Nica. They start telling me about their Fight Academy just around the corner called Renzo Gracie Fight Academy.

I was crazy looking for a good place to go back to practicing Muay Thai, which I practiced for over 1 year back home. So, I’m definitely signing up with them later today for classes!

Their 1st academy was Founded by the famous Renzo Gracie 20 years ago. It opened right across from the Madison Square Garden where they still are today.

Many of their students were based in Brooklyn, so in 2011, they opened the Williamsburg location. There they have modalities like the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai, but they also have spaces dedicated for weight training. Classes are not only for adults, but also for kids!

It’s surely one of the best fighting academies in NY  and I knew about them from back home in Brazil. Famous guys like Anthony Bourdain and Guy Ritchie have trained there too!

Daniel told me one of the funniest stories that happened with him and Guy Ritchie.

He was always training with Guy, and one night Guy asked “Do you want to come with me tonight to my wife’s show?”, and Daniel answered “Yeah, of course!”.

They got into Guy’s car and when Daniel noticed, they were entering Madison Square Garden. So, he asked Guy, “Wow, your wife must be pretty famous to be singing here!”

Obviously, Guy thought that Daniel was joking and he called Renzo Gracie telling what had just happened. He handed over the phone so Daniel and Renzo could talk, when Renzo said, “Daniel, that is Guy Richie!”

Daniel had no idea that he was THE Guy Richie, even though he loves Guy’s work as a movie director. He turned in amazement and said, “No way! I love your work! I think you’re one of the best film directors in the World!” Hahaha…

Well, obviously they still train together and are close friends today.

Daniel and Nica, thank you so much for a great “bar talk” and see you guys soon on the fighting floor!

Oh! If you like UFC, on November 12th, the 1st UFC will be hosted in NYC at the Madison Square Garden. Their academy will have 5 students fighting the Championship!!

Brooklyn Boulders is one of the greatest workouts to have a bit of downtime from the city. They offer a great 22,000 sqft space for rock climbing since 2009.

Located in the neighborhood of Gowanus, in Brooklyn, every year their team bring novelties to the experience they create.

“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” ~ Edmund Hillary

This time, they’ve added Augmented Reality to their menu of classes!

How it works? There are projections on the walls that create a video game experience for the climbers. The objective is to touch each projection – or target – as fast as possible. At every touch,  a sound is ignited to confirm the target was reached. Pretty cool, right? Fantastic mix of adventure with technology.

Being fit definitely became more entertaining at Brooklyn Boulders!

Oh! They also offer yoga, acroyoga, capoeira classes, and a variety of fitness workshops. Plus, these guys love to party making everything fun.

If you are a bit lazy and need and extra push to exercise, they have fantastic personal trainers that can help you out and keep you disciplined.

Also, their free wifi will let you document your experience to share with your friends!

You might want to see a short YouTube video where our Founder, Fê Paronetto, does some bouldering!

Lastly, after a fantastic class at Brooklyn Boulders, you might want to walk a few blocks to a neighborhood we love called Fort Greene. For lunch or dinner, go to Colonia Verde, one of our favorite spots!

If you want our expert’s help to organize a private party or gathering, let us know. This is also the perfect spot for a company outing or a team building day. Our team is also able to assist you in organizing it all.

If you enjoy fitness group activity, you should definitely learn more about Capoeira Brooklyn.

Capoeira is:

“…a child conceived in Africa and born and raised in Brazil. Originally outlawed in Brazil, the art of Capoeira was created and practiced by Africans forcibly brought to Brazil during the slave trade as a form of combating their oppression. Dance-like movements, instruments and singing disguised the martial nature of the art from the Portuguese slave masters.

Capoeira continued to be illegal in Brazil until the 1930’s when it was taken off the streets and brought into the classroom. Today Capoeira is a both legal and very popular in Brazil and throughout the world. On July 15th, 2008, Capoeira was officially recognized as a culturally preserved art by the Brazilian government’s Department of Culture. It is a rich and multi-dimensional art that teaches culture, language, music and encompasses a complete body workout.”

In short, this unique and traditional Afro-Brazilian Martial Arts mixes self-defense, acrobatics, with a specific music rhythm.

Capoeira Brooklyn was founded my Mestre Foca and his wife, Instrutora Rouxinol. Both have been practicing the technique for over 20 years. Mestre Foca decided to open the only full-time capoeira academy, in Brooklyn, years ago. Today, it a highly recognized school within the capoeira community in New York and abroad.

He is certified as a professional martial arts instructor through IDEA Health & Fitness Association, while Instrutora Rouxinol is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Besides the classes for adults of all levels, they also have fantastic classes for kids.

They are both specializes in teaching children, so it’s definitely a good activity for kids to try out too.

In 2012, Mestre Foca and Instrutora Rouxinol launched a music compilation called “Vem Brin Capoeira”.  They wrote and  You can buy on iTunes, if you’re interested.

So, we’re sure you’ll just love this Afro-Brazilian Martial Arts modality. Plus, there’s nothing better than to get fit with mental balance and great capoeira music!

Still in the Brazilian spirit, you might want to try a great restaurants, a bar and a bakery. Beco Bar, in Williamsburg, Berimbau do Brasil, in Greenwich Village, and Padoca Bakery on the Upper East Side.
