The Hedges Inn: NYC’s Great Escape in the East Hamptons

Day Trips and Travels The Hedges Hamptons by Joey Zauzig Joey

This week, our Contributor Joey Zauzig, shares his relaxing and guilt-free experience. He headed up to the East Hamptons for the weekend and stayed at a charming B&B called The Hedges Inn.

Day Trips and Travels The Hedges Hamptons by Joey Zauzig

“I need a vacation!”

A sentence I think every New Yorker uses at least once a week. Not because we like to complain (only sometimes), but because life in New York tends to take a toll on the mind and body.

Which is why it’s kind of key to escape, especially on the weekends, because let’s face it…nothing good or exciting ever happens. It’s beyond saturated with tourists and B&T’s (Bridge and Tunnelers).

So where do you go?

Well, preferably a remote island off the coast of wherever! But us, working guys and gals, need something quicker, which is why The Hamptons is the easiest route to pure rejuvenation. The keys to a successful NYC’s great escape to the Hampton’s starts with where you decide to rest your head. Once you accomplish that, the weekend takes care of itself.

Last week was one of those that I absolutely needed to get away. I know I could only do a quick weekend situation, but I wanted it to at least feel like I was out of New York completely. As I said before, one of the most important aspects of your Hampton’s getaway, is your accommodations.

Usually when I head out to the Hampton’s for the summer I stay with friends, but since it’s off season, not many people are out there just yet. I found the cutest Bed & Breakfast called The Hedges Inn, located in the East Hampton.

To be honest I hadn’t stayed at many Bed & Breakfasts in my 23 years, but now I’m hooked. This place was filled with charm and right away I felt at home, so I created my own hashtag for it: #HomeAtTheHedges.

The rooms were super cozy. I felt like I was in a quiet country house in the South of France.

Instantly I felt like the weight of the city was lifted off of my shoulders. Also, who can beat home cooked breakfasts complete with a mashed avocado toast topped with a bacon and an oozing egg or a baked egg, spinach cheese and bacon dish. Ok, I let the diet go…and had the cinnamon buns, but isn’t that what vacations are for?

This, hands down, is my new favorite New York City escape.

Now…a little bit about the property:

New York State hides several of places that are great getaways from the City. Long Island is a good choice if you want to spend a day away from New York City’s craziness.

The region is famous for its vineyards and also for the beaches. But, did you know there is a lavender farm in Long Island too? Yup! You don’t need to catch a flight to Provence to see some gorgeous lavender fields.

Lavender by the Bay is a lavender farm which is located in Long Island, specifically in East Marion. It’s a premier lavender farm and one of the largest in the Country. The farm is owned and run by a family that have been growing the highest quality lavender in Long Island for over 15 years.

The fields have twenty varieties of lavender, growing across seventeen acres, which offers in over 50,000 plants. The best part? Lavender by the Bay is opened to the public and you can visit the fields during the blooming seasons. The aroma of the place, we guarantee, is irresistible!

Before to plan your visit, you need to keep in mind that there are just three blooming periods during the year. Lavender by the Bay has lavenders from France and from England, and that’s why the blooming happens in different times.

The first English Bloom typically takes place mid to late June and sometimes into early July.

The main French Bloom usually begins in early July and lasts about 2 weeks. According to the farm, this is the best time to visit the place, because this bloom is the most impressive.

Do you still want a chance to see the lavenders?

Well, you can check out the second English Bloom, that typically starts late Summer/early Fall. But, it’s good to remember that we are dealing with mother nature. So, you can’t predict the exact time – these are approximations. See their website to check the updates about the blooming.

There is a $5 per person (ages 12 and up) field entry Fee. Once you visit the place, don’t forget to check out their store – it sells lavender cosmetics, lavender honey and, of course, lavender.

Lavender by the Bay in Long Island is definitely a great experience!

If you enjoy the region, you might enjoy visiting Sag Harbor on another weekend!

Here is what Vicky shares with us about her experience at Storm King!

Sounds like the perfect timing to escape the city and explore the Hudson Valley. One of its gems is the Storm King Art Center – a contemporary outdoor sculpture museum where you can enjoy a nice cultural day outdoors.

To start, it’s located in the lower Hudson area, one hour north of New York. The property has 500-acre landscape of fields, hills and woodlands.

This outdoor museum features a collection with more than 100 sculptures created by renowned artists like Barnett Newman, Louise Bourgeois, Maya Lin and Richard Serra.

A great way to experience their landscape has to offer is touring the gardens on a bike!

Rentals are first-come, first-served, so be sure to see that as soon as you get there.

They also offer a small kiosk with food and drinks, but don’t expect a huge sit down lunch. Options are limited and if you have any food restrictions, we recommend you bringing something from home to guarantee you’ll be fine!

In addition, one of the options to get to Storm King is via Metro North train from Grand Central Terminal, to Beacon. Then, you can get a taxi from Beacon to the Storm King.”

Lastly, Storm King reopens Wednesday, April 5th at 10am!

They are offering a free Storm King Family Membership to their first visitor on the 5th! So, if you’re interested, don’t forget to hurry up there.

So, we can’t wait to be back there this year!

And, not to mention, Storm King Art Center is the perfect place to organize not only a visit with friends & family, but also a cultural corporate activity with your team!

We love the Catskills region of upstate New York. Moreover, we are also fascinated in exploring abandoned spots where there once was an entire booming scene of people and life!

It’s incredible to learn what happened to these places. Why it became forgotten and to be able to walk through and register what it has transformed into.

If you L-O-V-E photography books and these abandoned locations, then you’ll love this book! It’s called “The Borscht Belt: Revisiting the Remains of America’s Jewish Vacationland”, by Marisa Scheinfeld.

It takes place in the Catskills Mountain Region, in upstate New York. In addition, it has some of the most intriguing images that will entice your curiosity.

Below is an excerpt from Marisa’s website where she explains with more details what this project is about.

“Today the Borscht Belt is recalled through the nostalgic lens of summer swims, Saturday night dances, and comedy performances. But its current state, like that of many other formerly glorious regions, is nothing like its earlier status.

Forgotten about and exhausted, much of its structural environment has been left to decay. The Borscht Belt, which features essays by Stefan Kanfer and Jenna Weissman Joselit, presents Marisa Scheinfeld’s photographs of abandoned sites. There, resorts, hotels, and bungalow colonies once boomed in the Catskill Mountain region of upstate New York.

The book assembles images Scheinfeld has shot inside and outside locations that once buzzed with life as year-round havens for generations of people. Some of the structures have been lying abandoned for periods ranging from four to twenty years, depending on the specific hotel or bungalow colony and the conditions under which it closed.

Other sites have since been demolished or repurposed. This makes this book an even more significant documentation of a pivotal era in American Jewish history.

The Borscht Belt presents a contemporary view of more than forty hotel and bungalow sites. From entire expanses of abandoned properties to small lots containing drained swimming pools, the remains of the Borscht Belt era now lie forgotten, overgrown, and vacant.

In the absence of human activity, nature has reclaimed the sites, having encroached upon or completely overtaken them. Many of the interiors have been vandalized or marked by paintball players and graffiti artists.

Each ruin lies radically altered by the elements and effects of time. Scheinfeld’s images record all of these developments.”

Take a look at Marisa’s countless upcoming events. These are great opportunities to meet her and get your book signed!

She is an extremely sweet person, besides obviously, extremely talented.

You will love her!

The Most Famous Feltman’s Of Coney Island Hot Dog Is Back

Culture Music Feltman's Coney Island hot dog Old Picture

The most famous hot dog in Coney Island finally is back! Our friend, Jason Homa, shared with us information and a bit of history about Feltman’s of Coney Island hot dog!

“In the spirit of the Fourth of July, I wanted to share this story about Feltman’s of Coney Island and the original hot dog. While Nathan’s is world-renowned and synonymous with Coney Island today, it was actually an offshoot of Feltman’s.

Charles Feltman first served sausages on rolls from a push cart in 1867 on the beach. He saved enough money to build what would become known as the worlds’s largest restaurant complex at the time. It is here he developed the modern hot dog. This establishment was upscale so the hot dog wasn’t his top seller.

In 1916 Nathan Handwerker left Feltman’s to create his own establishment, selling hotdogs for half the price. The two restaurants co-existed for about 40 years but Feltman’s closed in 1954.

Today, Feltman’s is having a revival as a Coney Island historian and tour guide reintroduces Feltman’s hot dog. They plan to sell it at half the price of Nathan’s.”

The Feltman’s of Coney Island hot dog store is actually in the East Village neighborhood, in Manhattan.

But, if you’ve never be to Coney Island, that is not really an island – now could be the perfect chance for you to visit. Go experience what it was like in the years of 1930–1945, when the picture above was made.

After visiting the store, you might have a sweet tooth and need to satisfy it. Walk only 1 block to Ray’s Candy Store for one of the best fried Oreos in the city!

If you have time, you might want to explore the neighborhood a little, so take a look at these 3 spots we love!
