Tips to Manage Mental Health & Big City Life: NYC Edition

Three people crossing the light in the Streets of New York City

The city never sleeps. Do you? Hype or burnout? Which one is it? Here is how to manage mental health & big city life.

Three people crossing the light in the Streets of New York City

Fellow urbanites – how are you? Really. – A question to be taken somewhat seriously. What lurks beneath the polished, well-dressed surface? Hype? So, how can you manage mental health & big city life?

To call New York City your home, well, it’s a privilege. No price is too high. We can take it. We can take it all.  Job, finances, rent, social life, romantic life, vegan lifestyle, naked yoga – and others.

Well-being? Pro. But how manageable is it? Objectively. Let’s try and be honest; it’s just us here—you and me. No eavesdropping.

Burnout, anyone? Autonomy is a costly affair. Thrive or survive? Mental health problems are exquisitely common in urbanites. Why? Euphemism: absence of balance.

Truth? Self-neglect. How do we go about it? How do we tackle the perpetually hindering obstacles?

Let’s find out. That is how to manage mental health & big city life like a professional.

The Holy Tripod

We know this already. We just tend to forget. Or rather choose to ignore. Balance. What do we mean by it? There are not one, not two, but three planes to a human being: emotional, mental, and physical.

If one collapses, the others will follow. Two-legged tripod? Improbable.

Now, big cities and the holy tripod are a perpetual battlefield. Work, mental effort, push – intellectual strains, and long shifts. Months go by; the body starts withering away.

Track club? – For sure, just not right now. May? June? Maybe. Long hours. Can’t make it. Can’t wait, though. – Can it wait? Can the body wait that long? Our mental health? Our emotional apparatus? – Venting. A mental health must.

How do we manage mental health & big city life? – Easy. Ready, set, go.

The cliché: exercise

Yes, we know. Exercise advice is so passé. We’re tired of people telling us we need to buy running shoes. But we do. It’s science. (we can’t argue with that, can we?)

Here’s how it works. Vanity first.  Exercise improves our physical appearance, no matter its shape or form. The better we look (“OH, YOU HANDSOME DEVIL” mirror reflection), the better we feel about ourselves—self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall, a healthy Narcissus narrative.

On a physiological level, there’s dopamine, a significant factor. The feel-good chemical is released into our under-the-weather brains as we shed tears and sweat.

Kind and benevolent, this neurotransmitter improves our mood (from downbeat to upbeat), increases motivation, and betters our attention span and memory function.

Addiction recovery experts from Bright Futures Treatment Center report: “Exercise is of paramount importance for sobriety and mental balance.” A walk a day can do wonders. No exceptions.

Close your eyes

(not to be read in a threatening tone) What’s more essential than sleep? Name one thing. Except for air. Too obvious.

To manage mental health & big city life (and get them to work in unison), we must consider interconnectedness. “Cause and effect.” Simple as that.

Without quality sleep, our body starts to shut down. It refuses to cooperate. And we have work to do. Without cognitive capacity, our work and interpersonal relationships begin to suffer. Things begin to crumble down. Prematurely. And incomprehensibly.

Getting the right amount of sleep would increase our brain function, and the “cause and effect” momentum would live to a happier ending: creativity and concentration drive, anxiety resting, and depression at bay—all that jazz.

With noise pollution, crime anxiety, and impossible working hours, it’s hard, not impossible. Find a routine that works for you.

Person lying on a sofa with blue blanket depicts how to manage mental health & big city life
You know you want it.

Social fort

It goes for us introverts, too. Leave no man behind. Social butterflies or solitary cocoons, human beings are hardwired for connection.

An inherent need gifts us a sense of purpose and belonging. Of course, this doesn’t mean we need to throw ourselves under the party bus if we’re uncomfortable with the idea.

However, having that one (preferably 2?) go-to friend, when the much feared (often unannounced) “night of the soul” unravels is more than crucial. Social activities involuntarily lift the holy tripod.

But, again, party mode is not mandatory. Organizing a night with some high-quality company will suffice. And we don’t even have to drink ourselves to oblivion.

Ever thought about throwing a sober party for once? It’s just as fun (and maybe a bit more awkward at first, but give it an hour). Fearing for your mental health? Try to spend quality time with your friends as often as possible.

Invite novelties

Neophilia – love for new stimuli. Unfortunately, following the same routine (and falling into a rut) is a frequent occurrence. Yes, NYC is no exception.

We walk the same streets, ride the same train, and enjoy happy hour with the same familiar faces, day in-day out. But science says: new experiences improve our mental health

. So, how do we do it? We expand our comfort zone.

Continuous learning is innate to human survival and our well-being; novelties impact our mental apparatus positively, whether we’re strutting new neighborhoods, shaking unfamiliar hands, or simply learning a new skill.

New experiences keep our neural pathways awake. And, come on, it’s NYC. See that new play. Bars? Museums? Concerts? – all things imaginable within arm’s reach. Excuses, much?

Person in a zebra costume Circus
Surprise yourself; try something new.

Solitude hour

“I’m not feeling too social right now.” – Got it. Lose the entourage, and put your running shoes on. Just in case. Is money tight?

Plenty of amazing things we can do for free. Yoga classes, botanical gardens. Looking for some peace in New York City? Try:

  • The Cloisters
  • Green-Wood Cemetary
  • Hayden Planetarium
  • Wave Hill
  • The Rambles, Central Park
  • The basement of the Strand Bookstore
  • The Rose Reading Room
  • Septuagesimo Uno (New York City’s smallest park)
  • Grant’s Tomb, Riverside Park
  • Burp Castle

Final thoughts on tips to manage mental health & big city life

To manage mental health & big city life, we must permit ourselves to whine about all the drawbacks. Articulate your hardships.

Is it uncomfortable? Let it all out.

Finding someone who can nod and validate our experience sends a message: You are not alone.

How to Look Impossibly Chic in NYC at All Times

Shop Ladies Look Chic In NYC Chris Murray

We all know that New York City is known for being one of the top fashion capitals in the world. Ladies (and gents) from countless countries try to replicate the NYC style. So, we’ve decided to share how to you can look amazingly chic in NYC at all times!

Shop Ladies Look Chic In NYC Accessories Crystal Jo

Although the New York City look is well documented, defining it is still hard. New York women are known as some of the most stylish and sleek in the world. And, they always look impossibly chic in NYC day and night!

Their signature mark is being able to look fashionable and effortless at the same time.

Series like Sex and the City and Gossip Girl were shot in New York and shared priceless insights into the fashion scene and style!

If your goal is to look chic and polished, you are in the right place! With a couple of tips and tricks, it’s possible to pull off the NYC look without too much hassle.

This quick guide is designed to help you look impossibly chic in NYC at all times!

1. Invest in Wardrobe Classics and Pick Your Trend

NYC girls are not slaves to fashion trends. They would rather spend money on good quality basics and investment pieces and go with a high-low mix.

They manage to combine timeless, well-made coats, shoes, and bags with items from Topshop or H&M brands.

So, to start, you need to know what suits you and your body type and work the latest trend around that.

Load up on classics like fitted jackets, a great pair of jeans, cashmere sweaters, a couple of dresses, and a perfect pair of pumps.

These wardrobe staples will allow you to mix and match the garments and look fabulous in minutes. We love the Israeli designer, Nili Lotan, with all her simple sophistication or try exploring the vintage and thrift shops in NYC!

For instance, a leather jacket with some skinny jeans and a beanie will keep you looking chic while giving your outfit a certain edge.

2. Embrace a More Undone Look

Shop Ladies Look Chic In NYC Dusan Jovic

The key to looking effortlessly chic is in mastering the undone look.

This look is cool, classy, and relaxed at the same time. Dressing for comfort is what New Yorkers do, but they add a twist to it with a couple of nice touches.

For instance, relaxed clothing should be balanced with more structured pieces. Try combining slouchy trousers with a structured sweatshirt and a cocoon coat. UMA | Raquel Davidowicz has a timeless style and some truly amazing items.

When done right, a messy bun and smudged eyeliner will up your overall aesthetics level, with just a little bit of effort. Oh! By the way, find mini and cute skirts here. They are great to put together an effortlessly chic look.

3. Add Statement Accessories to Elevate Your Style

The key to a show-stopping look is in the specific details.

When you need something a little more unique, turn to statement pieces. They are perfect for dressing up a minimalistic outfit or elevating an already glamorous look.

You can easily take any look to the next level by simply adding statement earrings, oversized sunglasses, or a bejeweled bag to your ensemble.

If you are interested in learning more about jewelry, like how to determine whether your sterling silver pieces are genuine, take a look at Moon Magic’s blog for Inspiration.

4. Having the Right Shoes is a Must

Shop Ladies Look Chic In NYC Courtney Cook

The right pair of shoes will add the perfect amount of flair to any outfit.

When it comes to New York, try to strike a fine balance between practical but unstylish and stylish yet ultra-uncomfortable.

Don’t worry; it’s possible to be comfortable and chic.

Try mid-heeled booties, ankle boots, oxford lace-ups, smoking loafers, or low-heel sandals for summertime. They are versatile and comfortable enough to navigate the constant motion required in NYC.

A cool pair of sneakers can also do the trick, especially if you pair them with a graphic Tee and jeans, a printed wrap top, denim cutoff, or a feminine dress.

Also, keep in mind that people mostly walk and commute through the subways in NYC. Many times, it’s much faster than grabbing an Uber, specially during rush hours. If you’re exploring the New York City’s top attractions, be sure to get your comfortable shoes.

There are countless amazing brands, but you can start looking at some like Schutz, Alexander Birman or Josefina Portugal. Their sneakers are super trendy and extremely comfortable for walking.

5. Keep Your Grooming Habits on Point

New Yorkers are religious about their maintenance, so you need to nail it too.

Starting with the right foundation is the surefire way to look stylish at all times. Again, there is an infinity of brands at different price points, so you might want to swing by Sephora, for example, to see what suits you best!

In addition, regular visits to your hairdresser, neat brows, and a regular manicure will help you enhance your appearance and upgrade your look.

Not sure where to go to get your hair and nails done? Well, we love the Brazilian-born hair expert Rogerio Cavalcante and if you’re blond, or like to go blond, he’s the guy! Also, the duo behind Olivia Palermo’s amazing hair is another great option!

Don’t forget about your skin!

Quality skin products, along with enough sleep and a well-balanced diet, will keep it healthy and revitalized.

6. Hat Always Works in New York

Shop Ladies Look Chic In NYC Teressa Foglia Hats Fernanda Paronetto

A hat is the type of accessory that can take your outfit up a notch.

Whatever the gender or the season, covering your head in NYC is always in.

In the sun, go with fedoras and straw hats, and in the wintertime, beanies are an excellent choice. If you want to add a bit of chic French touch to your outfit, try a beret.

Whether you choose a fancier hat or a plain one, it gives off an urban city girl’s vibe.

To help you out, we love these two talented hat designers: Teressa Foglia and Satya Twena. If you want something exclusive, ask about their custom-made pieces!

In the end, it’s not that hard to look impossibly chic in NYC at all times. Whatever you choose to put on, make sure to wear it with confidence, ‘cause that’s what New York is all about!

As we’ve mentioned before, New York City is really a natural incubator with entrepreneurs from diverse industries and coming from different parts of the globe! We’ve interviewed some, if you want to check them out!

I recently learned more about the talented Anastasia Komarova and her unique and carefully crafted work.

This was our first contact:

“…I went to read further and was touched by your story. As an immigrant itself (I came to NYC in 2016 from Russia) I sincerely understand your feelings and passion. I think it is absolutely great that you have that project. It helps people who just beginning to explore the city as well as one who lives here an entire life. Insider interviews with creative people having a great contribution to the image of the city too.”

And from this message, we started talking and I was impressed with her work and her talent!

So, take a look below at the short interview we did with her and read about her impressive story:

Tell me about you and your background.

I received a Masters from the Moscow Architectural Institute, a scion of the famed Vkhutemas school, which was instrumental in the Russian avant-garde and constructivist movements of the early 20th century. We had a great course of sculpture and painting that helps me a lot for my future projects.

It also helped me develop the sense of proportion and details not only from the technical drawings and constant travels, but from the eye observation while I was working on furniture design.

How did you ended up in our beautiful New York City?

New York was never a dream for me while I was living in Russia. I traveled a lot and was fascinated with the Asian ancient culture.

The first time I came to the NYC was because my best friend needed an emotional support at that time. A week after being here, I fell in love with the atmosphere of the city and vowed to stay here.

What inspires you in your work and how is NYC’s architecture translated into your pieces?

New York City itself is my main inspiration. People, architecture and historic buildings, sounds…all work as a creative force while I am working on new designs. I have never aimed to reflect any particular architecture developed or created by myself or other architects.

I am just trying to reflect some fundamental things that architecture is based on. Furthermore, my favorite areas are Tribeca and Financial District. I like to feel the scale of architecture, observe the intricacy of the old facades.

Shop Ladies Forms New York White Architecture

What is the general style of the women/men that purchases your pieces?

Simply describing it is a smart fashion. People who are inspired by art, curious and enthusiastic I think will find my work compelling.

Tell me about your collections.

Forms gives you a sense of the importance of a little surface detailing. Architectural aesthetics translates into to something wearable, simplifying complex ideas and taking a great care for textures and volumes. Accessories, with their pronounced shapes and sharp lines, invite you to touch them and feel their exceptional structure.

What is the biggest challenge for a startup in NYC?

Biggest challenge for me was setting up, finding the studio. People in NY are generally open for discussion and new ventures in the same way they can be easily distracted by overwhelming number of exiting events. So, that “toughed” me to be more social sensitive and patient.

Where can people find FORMS?

All collections are available at the brand’s online store f-o-r-m-s.com. Some pieces you can find in The Store at MAD – Museum of Arts and Design and also Henrik Vibskov boutique has some items.

What would you say for those that aspire to start their own brand?

Most importantly is “do what you love”. All the rest will be accumulated around you driven by your passion.

Figura: Shopping Less But Better

Shop Ladies Figura Clothes Anna Sergeeva

New York is not only one of the fashion’s capitals of the world, but it’s the birth place of countless innovative brands. Figura clothes will give your close a twist and make you a true New Yorker!

Shop Ladies Figura Clothes Anna Sergeeva

It’s super common not only to walk on the streets and see new stores, but it’s easy to find new emerging brands launching their online presence and fighting for their space.

That said, we recently interviewed Elena Zaharova, founder of Figura, a clothes line that enhances the different beauties in women, working with gorgeous, everyday wardrobe pieces.

Take a look at her fantastic journey from west-central Russia to New York!

1. Tell us a bit about you, where you’re from, your background, what you worked with?

I was born in a very small town in west-central Russia. It was remarkably boring, and it took me 10 years of urban life to appreciate my rural childhood — the ability to play outside till dusk, run barefoot, spend most summer camping and hanging out with friends unsupervised.

My mom is very crafty and creative. As far as I remember myself, she’s been sewing, painting, playing with different media and techniques. I was that kid whose parents built ketchup-soda volcano with them and enjoyed it no less.

When I was 17, I moved to Moscow to study journalism. In a big city, I was surrounded by more creative people, and I started questioning myself about what I want to do. Journalism wasn’t that answer, and after two years I left the school.

Eventually, I realized that my passion for art and craft wasn’t as childish and silly as it appeared, and could become a profession and even pay the bill. I started working as a decorator and a window display designer full-time. At 25, I led a chain of 18 stores as a creative director, changed windows seasonally and developed their visual identity.

2. How did Figura start? How did your childhood in Moscow, playing and sewing clothes impact your business?

Shop Ladies Figura Clothes Anna Sergeeva Trench Coat

I’ve been sewing and playing with clothes since my early childhood. I joke sometimes that most women from post-soviet countries are born to be a fashion designer. Fashion choice was very limited, and they had to create all their clothes. In my childhood, it was more of a routine to turn an old granny’s t-shirt into a dress than go shopping. I learned how to use a sewing machine when I was about 9, and my first very own piece was a belt bag made out of curtains leftover.

I’ve always designed for myself, but business-wise it wasn’t in the air until 2015. Figura started randomly. There were a few things I couldn’t find at stores, like a bathroom-friendly jumpsuit with no hassle to get it off and on.

One day I put a few pieces together into my first collection. The result overcame my expectations, and, as I see it now, part of the reason was my low-key approach. I noticed that women can relate to non-professional models better. And, if I want a dress to have decent size pockets, so do other women. Since then, I devoted myself to explore the comfort and practicality of women’s wardrobe.

3. Being an outsider entrepreneur, how has your journey in NYC been so far and what are the biggest challenges you find?

Shop Ladies Figura Clothes Lloyd Mitchell Women Dancing

I moved to New York 3 years ago, so did my brand. New York is very competitive, but it also makes the atmosphere creative and risk-friendly.

By the moment I started Figura, I’d been blogging for a few years, so most of my audience became my customers.

Moving to New York made me change the way I marketed my brand. I had to learn how to build the audience from scratch. It’s an ongoing process, and I’m still far from saying “Good job!” to myself.

4. How do you see Figura fit into NYC’s fashion scene and into the powerful New Yorker women’s closet?

I think of my customers as very sophisticated women who support the mantra of shopping less but better. As a designer, I’m into creating better quality pieces rather than selling more.

New York apartments can be small, but our closets are big. Let’s be smart to load them with pieces we really need.

5. What are your top 3 styling tips to feel like a true New Yorker?

  • Mix & match. A real New Yorker is like the city itself, diverse and vibrant;
  • Buy less but better;
  • Shop independent designers, at least sometimes. Besides supporting them, it gives your wardrobe that twist.

6. Which item is your bestseller?

Shop Ladies Figura Clothes Sergey Korol Black Pants

Wide black pants. They don’t look baggy and have it all: elastic waist and deep pockets. When I sold the first pair, I left the second for myself.

I’ve used this cut for my other models (jumpsuits, for example), but the original wool version is still my best hit.

7. Where can people find Figura, besides online?

Figura attends local markets and pop-up projects. On October 29th, you can spot Figura’s costume at the dancing performance Slice & Dice, as part of our collaboration with The Lovelies, a local group of artists. Get updated by following Figura on Instagram: @FiguraClothes.

8. Is there any upcoming collaboration, collection, or interesting info you’d like to share? How does it currently involve the local community, being an independently owned brand?

Shop Ladies Figura Clothes Suxiao Yang Christopher Liong White Dress

For most of my editorials, I feature real women, as opposed to professional models, from different fields and backgrounds, ranging from a barista at a Parisian Cafe to an emerging DJ in Brooklyn. New York taught me how to approach people and share ideas. Beauty only works with passion and collaboration behind it.

My first New York projected was called “All About Us Not Clothing”. The name speaks for itself: the line was presented by my long-time Instagram muses. Six girls from around the world received the clothes and styled them the way they wanted, creating a lookbook for Figura’s new collection.

I’m grateful to Etsy Community and Handmade Collective for the opportunity to shape my vision and blog about Figura’s aesthetic. Raw Artist New York became my first runway. I’m always open to collaboration with local brands. Just recently I had a chance to work with Zunta Shop and Zhuorui Fu Collection.

Recently I’ve teamed up with The Lovelies, a group of local artists, to challenge fashion to the point of being comfortable for dancers. It feels good to see Figura’s clothes fit easily everywhere, from a red carpet walk to a dance performance.

Figura’s last collection was dedicated to New York’s ubiquitous corner store delis. Delis are as visually noisy and as busy as urban life, and Figura’s minimal designs are sure to help one find balance in the city. Right now I’m working on my new collection, inspired by natural textures of volcanic Iceland. Being in contrast with the urban story, it keeps exploring the meaning of clothing and serving the practicality.

Many times we travel to the best places in the world and we forget to register some of the most amazing moments, right?

Or, during that fantastic time, just being responsible for registering everything can be more stressful than pleasant.

And still, during our daily life, moments are created, but not registered.

That said, we are excited to share another BTSNYC Experience with you! Our fantastic partner, an award winning documentary photographer is specialized in family photography, weddings and events.

This Brooklyn-based visual biographer, as she calls herself, will give you another perspective on all the special moments during a NYC trip, or even, during a day in your life (if you live here).

Please contact us to book!

What is Day In The Life?

BTSNYC Experiences On Going Photography in NYC Movies

For people who believe in recording memories of childhood for their kids, our partner photographer will do this job for you. How? By spending a day with your family capturing all the little moments that are the essence of who you are, but might be gone forever unnoticed because of how hectic our life is.

The “Day In The Life” experience is like building the bridge from today to the day in the future when you are going to miss today badly. And, then you’ll be able to cross this bridge in the opposite direction and find a comfort in it.

You’ll be amazed by how much love, hard work and appreciation goes into your everyday.

This session is fully documentary, which means: The Photographer does not give any directions, uses only available light, works extremely hard to capture the right moments.

This type of session is also great for capturing your NYC vacation!

BTSNYC Experiences On Going Photography in NYC Mural

Listening to a street musician in Central Park, dining in Little Italy, taking a ride on Coney Island Wonder Wheel – those are such fun activities to experience, right?! But is it as much fun to also be responsible for capturing the precious memories? We don’t think so!

This session is such an interesting combination of a regular Day In The Life. It focuses on everyday moments that showcase the essence of a family, as well as personalities of each family member. And, a Vacation Session, where the focus is on the city and on travel adventures.

Imagine how awesome it would be to have a professional documentary photographer hanging out with you for a day doing her magic and then having an album full of authentic moments as a keepsake from your trip!

Please contact us to book!

What’s included in Day In The Life package?

Day In The Life package consists of 3 components: “Captured”, “Printed”, “Downloaded”.

Captured” is your session fee that covers photographer’s time and talent during the session as well as post processing.

Printed” is the way your story is going to be presented in print. You can select a custom keepsake box with prints, photo book or photo album. “Printed” is always our clients’ favorite.

Downloaded” are your digital files. You can either purchase a smaller selection of the very best images from your day. Or, get all the good ones that will make you happy!

The food you love, veganized.

A while ago, we were invited by a dear friend of ours, to go up to Harlem and try this amazing local vegan restaurant.

Our answer immediately was “Yes! Of course!”. Our Founder is vegetarian, going on vegan and we just love everything we can learn about this growing lifestyle.

We really enjoy Harlem and everything about that neighborhood, from the restaurants, to the vibe, to the shops and nightlife. Everything there has a special taste. The uniqueness is hard to describe.

Getting there was, of course, super easy and in no time, we dropped off 110 Street Station Central Park North, on the 2/3 (red line).

Just a 5-minute walk from there, we arrived at Seasoned Vegan, Harlem’s very 1st full-service Vegan restaurant.

We were very lucky to be hosted exclusively by the owner, Brenda and her son Aaron Beener.

Our restaurant specializes in preparing a very unique type of cuisine: gourmet vegan soul food. We use the term “soul food” loosely because we are not referring exclusively to the typical cuisine of the Southern region of the United States.

This sounds great and extremely normal, right? Now, imagine back in the 1980’s, when Brenda decided to go vegan with her family! The entire community judged them and didn’t really get what they were doing, nor why.

In the beginning of this journey, during Thanksgiving celebrations, no one would invite them over after this dietary decision. Brenda even mentioned that they literally felt as if they were aliens.

But, as time went by, little by little people from their community started to open up, tried her dishes and now, every-single-person wants to be invited to her Thanksgiving parties! Haha!

The restaurant was finally founded in 2014 and is quite spacious, with great natural light that certainly give it more life! You can see through inside the kitchen and peek in to see how everything is prepared.

The dishes are organic and 100% vegan! If you’re the carnivore type, we truly recommend you to give it a chance and stop by. We are certain they won’t disappoint you.

It’s incredible how all the dishes we’ve tried are extremely flavorful and clearly made with love.

So, you might want to try:

  • Lemon Crusted “Chicken” Nuggets: fermented soy chicken nuggets breaded and fries
  • Stuffed Avocado: one avocado sliced, pitted and filled with almond meat and topped with cashew “cheese” and pico de gallo. Seasonal and Gluten free
  • Raw Lasagna: raw zucchini sliced and cashew “cheese” layered into shredded spinach, topped with homemade raw marinara. Gluten free

In addition, for dessert we ate one of the best Red Velvet cupcake of our lives!

And still, if you’re not able to go there, or if you need to schedule a quick pick-up, you can do it all online, though their website. Also, take a look at an IGTV Video we did during one of our visits!

For the master chefs out there, stay tuned! Brenda has had plans of launching her own vegan cook book with yummy recipes. We hope it comes out soon!

Be sure to enjoy and explore the neighborhood before or after going to Seasoned Vegan!

So, if you’re also a fan of Harlem, you might enjoy some of the places that the beauty Africa Miranda shared with us!

Finally, to try some cooking at home and be sure how to stay fit and healthy, take a look at these bodybuilding meal plans for vegans. And try the handcrafted, dairy-free and SO delicious bite-size vegan cupcake flavors at Baked By Melissa!

Curiosities Insider Interviews Wanderlust Girls Pop Art

Come explore the NYC rock’n’roll world of Emily and Abigail, creators of Wanderlust Girls! Enjoy their 9 best behind the scenes spots in New York City!

Curiosities Insider Interviews Wanderlust Girls Manhattan Bridge

Emily and Abigail (the Wanderlust Girls) met in middle school many eons ago (18 years to be exact), in a small town just outside of Boston.

They grew up sharing a love for fashion, rock’n’roll and adventure. These shared interested morphed into a blog, WanderLust Girls back in 2010, which has since grown into the fashion, lifestyle, travel brand they run today.

The girls recently expanded their business down in Nashville, which you will be seeing more of on their social media soon.

If they are not in Nashville hanging with rock stars or repping their black clad closets on the New York City streets, they are likely in the air jetting to a new location for their next travel piece.

Take a look below to see their 9 best behind the scenes spots in New York City:

“I NEED MORE is a clothing store with all the spikes and studs you can dream of. (Yes, we dream about spikes and studs.) The owner, Jimmy Webb is a rock’n’roll legend in the city who we are lucky enough to call a friend. Every piece in the shop is unique, bold, and badass.”

As they say, this is literally a “A Rock’N’Roll clothing store for everybody”! The store is true a labor of love and dedication. You’ll certainly love it all: from the goo goo muck chandelier to the hand pained zebra stripe dressing rooms and painting on the walls!

They are a multi-label store in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and always have big names coming by! A few famous friends in their list are: the one and only Ewan McGregor, Slash, Alice Cooper and Duff McKagan!

Pass by to see what they are up to!

Duff’s Brooklyn

Curiosities Insider Interviews Wanderlust Girls Duffs Brooklyn

“If you ever wanted to sit in an electric chair, look no further! Duff’s Brooklyn has its very own, as well as some of the creepiest, yet amazing decor we’ve ever seen. Enjoy some metal music and don’t forget to spin the wheel to win various prizes. Keep spinning until you get the Jesus juice.”

Founded in 1999 back in the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, in Manhattan, this metal mecca finally moved into Brooklyn in 2004 and is the place to go if you a heavy metal lover. If you’re not part of this lifestyle, it’s still a fantastic place to go explore and broaden your horizons.

The spot, now located in South Williamsburg, is certainly a true metal place. Names like Pantera, Iron Maiden, Kerry King of Slayer, Exodus, Machine Head, The Sword, and many others have visited it.

Let’s rock!

Hours: Monday – Sunday: 6pm – 4am

Location: 168 Marcy Avenue

Jane Motorcycles

“Jane Motorcycles is our favorite place to go scope for beautiful bearded motorcycle riding men… I mean they have great coffee, that’s why we go. This beautifully curated moto gear shop surrounds the actually really great coffee shop. It’s amazing in the nice weather when they open the garage style door and you can enjoy your latté will gazing at all the motorcycles lined up outside.”

This is the ultimate NYC’s custom motorcycles, apparel, gear, art, books, and espresso shop, and we love it too! Alexander DiMattio and Adam Kallen started Jane with the objective of putting a new take on a motorcycle shop. And…they did it flawlessly!

These guys are from Brooklyn and everything in their store translates the vibe of the neighborhood and the lifestyle they personally enjoy.

They literally created this store out of scratch – actually it’s not their original location, since they were forced to move out of their other place. But, a blessing in disguise, for sure. At this spot, they were able to transform into reality all their dreams of what their store should looks like, such as the huge coffee counter and the garage door roll-up.

We are also huge coffee lovers, and their coffee partner is delicious, with ethically source coffee from all over the world – totally up our alley, since we work with and support sustainable traveling!

Definitely a must-go spot!

This is also a place we enjoy a lot!

Pink, in the Lower East Side, is a great spot to go for drinks, good music, a great crowd and even to celebrate your birthday.

They have a pretty cool private room in the back, if you prefer having your guests all together and more comfortable.

As they explain: “Pinks is what happens when a musician & a motorcycle enthusiast come together & build a bar around their love of Kustom Kulture.”

UNFORTUNATELY THIS RESTAURANT IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED!

“Three of Cups, if you’re are in the mood for a delicious Italian meal and some light death metal you are in the right spot. On street level Three of Cups is a beautiful restaurant with drool-worthy pizzas and pasta dishes. Meanwhile, the basement has pretty heavy metal music playing, leopard print poles, and a badass crowd.”

Who doesn’t love Italian food made from these old family recipes and pizzas, right?

Located in the East Village, Three of Cups was founded back in 1992 and they really know the essence in making good pizza.

If you’re not that into pizza – if this even exists, lol – their food menu comes from recipes from the Southern Italian regions like Sicily, Naples and Bari.

And still, if you’re into pizza and pasta but keep track of all the calories you eat, don’t worry…they have delicious gluten-free options on the menu.

Location: 83 1st Avenue

Gutter Bar

Curiosities Insider Interviews Wanderlust Girls The Gutter
Our Founder, Fê, with her friends at The Gutter, in Williamsburg.

“Gutter Bar Brooklyn, has great cheap whiskey and a retro style bowling alley in the back. Equipped with 8 lanes to show off your skills. They also have a pool table. It’s a really great place to go with a group of friends on a cold winter day.”

We were so excited to see the Gutter Bar as part of Emily’s and Abigail’s list! This is a spot that we go a lot to and always have a great time!

Now, don’t expect a super fancy bowling alley because, as the girls mentioned, it’s a retro style one. But, then again, who need fancy to have fun, right?

They have a full bar, a pool table (be sure to place your Quarter on the table to get in line) and the bowling alley. Oh! And after passing by the restrooms, you’ll see another room! Walk in! They have a stage with live music and a dance floor!

It can be a while – a few hours – until you play, so you can arrive early, or just get your number and enjoy the bar until your time comes.

Enchantments

Curiosities Insider Interviews Wanderlust Girls Enchantment Store

“Enchantments is the oldest occult store in NYC. This space is filled with wonderfully witchy items from candles to bring love into your life, herbs and oils to rid yourself of ex boyfriends, books like ‘The Witches Bible’ and of course, tarot cards. Literally all you could ever need.”

The store is located in the East Village and opened back in 1982! Their mission is: Our mission is to help people empower themselves, heal and grow through spiritual practice. We believe in the principle “harm none,” and do not endorse items that hurt others.

Their Apothecary has over 100 recipes and can be mixed and matched according to what you are looking for.

“Obscura Antiques, a small antique and oddities shop located in the East Village. We once got a bat skeleton there! So, if you’re in the market for bones, taxidermy, or even a Romanian AK-47 Bayonet, you hit the jackpot! Give yourself at least an hour to look through everything. You’ll find some gems for sure.”

Looking through these old antiques and oddities is certainly a journey into the past and can be quite amusing if you let your mind fly.

They are the oldest shop in this category in NYC and they ‘carry medical, scientific, natural history, fraternal, circus/sideshow, and all things unusual’.

Plus, as they mentioned, we also believe it’s a great place to find a unique gift. Well, it will certainly be a gift your loved one will remember forever!

Enjoy your exploration!

Monday – Saturday: 12pm – 8pm
Sunday: 12pm – 7pm

The Huffington Post: One Of NYC’s Top Travel Entrepreneurs

About BTSNYC What The Press Says Huffington Post

Regardless of your profession, being featured on The Huffington Post is definitely one of the ultimate goals! Our Founder, Fernanda Paronetto, was selected as one of NYC’s top Travel Entrepreneurs.

About BTSNYC What The Press Says Huffington Post

The day we got the news that our Founder, Fê, was featured on the Huffington Post as one of NYC’s top Travel Entrepreneurs, was memorable.

Not only for the tremendous honor and accomplishment in the Title, but because it was the day after her birthday!

What a gift, right?

The extremely talented Tech, Business & Lifestyle Brand Strategist, Sissi Johnson, was author responsible for the fantastic piece.

So, read below an excerpt of the article:

If you believe there is nothing like exploring a city through the eyes of a local, think again. Brazilian Fernanda Paronetto knows all of Big Apple’s best kept secrets.

“I always had this indescribable passion and curiosity for NY, so I was often here visiting, always uncovering the best hidden spots and events. The city is just so dynamic, alive, full of novelties, so multi-cultural, beautiful, with an intense energy – the list can go on forever.”

On starting Behind the Scenes NYC remotely, she said:

“A New York woman in her 40’s sent me a message saying: ‘Hi there! I was born in NYC and have lived here my entire life. But, I didn’t know about this restaurant you wrote about. So, I went to it last night, and simply loved it! Thank you for the tip!’ – I was like: WOW!

“I’m in Brazil, in my room at my mom’s house, giving tips to real New Yorkers who are actually enjoying them and thanking me! There must be something right about what I’m doing…”

As a final point, we are so grateful for this acknowledgement. Plus, it an honor to have Fernanda named as one of NYC’s Top Travel Entrepreneurs.

If you want to learn more about Fê, and her journey to New York City, you’ll simply love the article written by Hustle & Deal Flow – a movement for creators.

31 Curious Facts About New Yorkers We Just Love

Curiosities City Secrets 31 Curious Facts About New Yorkers

We all know that New Yorkers are very unique types of human beings and that we do have our peculiarities! Some might even say we’re a bit crazy but, then again, we don’t really care. See 31 curious facts about New Yorkers we just love!

Curiosities City Secrets 31 Curious Facts About New Yorkers
Photo Credit: Help us find out! Claim it if it’s yours!

As we said, New Yorkers are pretty interesting human being, with very unique, and weird habits.

So, we decided to put together a list of several pretty hilarious things New Yorkers commonly do.

Some of these were extracted from an article we found by our friends at BuzzFeed! It’s short and sweet!

We have to emphasize that #31 is definitely the ultimate best one in our point of view. Or, at least in our Founder’s point of view. This is something that she mentions almost ever single day after commuting to work.

31 Curious Facts About New Yorkers:

1. Strategically jaywalk in zigzags so that not a second is wasted.

2. Craftily weave through the crowds to get on that fully packed 6 train.

3. If they’re not talking to someone, they have their earphones on. All. The. Time.

4. Lean over the yellow subway line to see if a train’s coming – as if it’ll make it come any faster.

5. Gets crazy mad at places that aren’t opened 24h a day. Why in the world would they ever even close? Specially a pharmacy or a pizza spot.

6. Ride bikes in traffic, during blizzards, with no helmet on.

7. Roll their eyes to people that can’t swipe in their metro card on the first try.

8. Listen to music while reading a book and standing up on the subway.

9. Ask how much you pay for rent and how big your apartment is, even if they’ve just met you 5 minutes ago.

10. Pretend like crazy stuff isn’t happening while it’s happening.

11. Talk about how you can’t wait for winter during the summer…and then how you wish it were summer in the winter.

12. Avoids eye contacts so that people don’t fee like you’re opened to talking to them. You need directions? They might not stop…

13. Considers every single park as a type of “urban beach”, and can simply strip down to get a sun tan.

14. Make fun of Williamsburg, especially if you live in Williamsburg.

15. Eat bagels as drunk food.

…and still…

16. Take random pictures of people on the train to show friends.

17. Love cursing. A lot. Like, really, a “shit load” of cursing.

18. Look up at night to see what color the Empire State Building is.

19. Jaywalk so that not a minute is wasted.

20. Get crazy mad that they encounter a line of 5 people walking side by side, blocking the entire sidewalk. Damn tourists…

21. And walk at super speeds to avoid anyone with a clipboard. And, would probably win the Power Walking marathons.

22. Squeeze into super-crowded (but free!) yoga classes, which sort of defeats the purpose.

23. Can eat pizza at any time of the day, specially at 3am.

24. Can’t understand why people literally walk into the subway, before people are able to step out. WTF!?

25. At every new year, reduces the radius in which they actually commute to and from. At some point, they’ll sleep, work and play in only 1 neighborhood.

26. Can see a snake wrapped around the subway’s bars, and just look away like there’s nothing there and continue reading.

27. Are probably the worst drivers on the planet…but are experts in ordering Ubers in a split second, or hailing a cab in the middle of 42nd Street.

28. Are considered rude and snobbish, but are actually very hot hearted people. Deep deep inside.

29. Although they all seam impatient, they’ll silently stand in massive lines at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, or simply to grab a coffee.

30. Complains about almost everything but, in the end, couldn’t see themselves living anywhere else on the planet.

31. Ride over a bridge on the subway or in a cab, look at the skyline, and remember why you live here in the first place!
