Car Rental in New York City: 6 Things to Keep in Mind

Car Rental in New York City 6 Things to Keep in Mind Behind the Scenes NYC

Today we will share with you 6 things to keep in mind, when you decide to a car rental in New York City! And, take a look at some amazing spots for day-trips!!!

Car Rental in New York City 6 Things to Keep in Mind Behind the Scenes NYC

If you are going to New York City for business or pleasure, the chances are that you need to rent a car at least once, so let’s talk about car rental in New York City!

It is not always easy to find street parking, and the subway can get expensive if you stay for a day or two. That is where car rental in New York can help.

If you are around JFK or Newark airports, several companies will offer cars for rent. Usually, you can get one at the airport, but sometimes it is cheaper to book in advance online, and you can gather more info too.

Follow these essential tips to ensure you have a positive experience during your New York car rental process.

#1 Make Sure You Have the Right Driver’s License

Although you will not necessarily need a U.S. driver’s license for your rental, it is usually considered the standard ID most companies accept.

If you have an international license or plan on using another type of ID to rent, check with your rental company first.

#2 Check Whether Your Credit Card’s Acceptability in the Rental Company

Many rental car companies require their customers to put down a credit card deposit if they do not have enough cash for the total value of the rental.

Make sure you know which cards your specific company will accept.

If you do not want to waste your time standing in line, bring several different types of cards with you on your trip.

#3 Keep an Eye on Your Rate

If you book your car rental in New York City through the company’s website, the chances are that you will get a discounted rate.

If you find yourself in need of additional services like insurance or GPS, make sure to book them before getting into your new car.

That way, if the rates go up after you drive off the lot, you can still pay the discounted rate you found online.

#4 Shop Around for the Best Deals

If you want an inexpensive car rental service in New York, do not just book it with the company with the closest location near your hotel or apartment building.

Research specialty companies that may offer discounts on larger groups like families or business trips.

In addition, if you want to rent a car for an extended period, ask your company about weekly and monthly discounts.

#5 Check the Scenic Route

Sometimes it is worth paying extra to avoid highways during rush hour traffic in New York City. Although this tip may not come naturally to some, it can still save you time.

Car rental companies understand that their customers are in a hurry, so they may find the shortest route possible. Check your map for alternate routes and enjoy the drive!

You might also play a day trip up-state to spots like Cedar Lakes Estate, Dia: Beacon, Storm King. Or maybe to visit some hot spots in Long Island like Sag Harbor or wineries like Macari Vineyards.

#6 Get the Car Rental Insurance

Rental car in New York City insurance is sometimes included in your package, but often it is not.

Read your agreement so that you know what to expect.

Also, make sure that you are not fudging about getting insurance to save money on the car’s total value.

Although the agency might hold you responsible if anything happens to the car while it is in your possession, you won’t be able to get a new rental until you have paid for damages.

Doing this could come back to bite you if the car is stolen or totaled.

Additionally, check with your own insurance company about your coverage.

You might be surprised to find that your personal auto insurance policy will not extend to a rental car.

If it does, find out how much coverage you have to make an informed decision about whether or not to purchase additional insurance from the rental company.

Furthermore, getting involved in a car crash with a rental can get complicated quickly, so keep the number of a car crash lawyer handy when traveling and renting a car.

Conclusion

Keeping these quick tips in mind can help you have a great experience.

Opt for a cheap car rental in New York City to get rid of commute hassles.

Do your research and collect proper info to determine which companies offer discounts for people in your situation.

Abandoned Bannerman Castle: Mystery On A Hudson River Island

Day Trips and Travels Bannerman Castle Island Hudson Valley

We are huge fans of exploring the abandoned places around New York City and it’s no different when we head upstate. The abandoned Bannerman Castle is located on a super tiny Hudson River Island.

This video is fantastic, right? The abandoned Bannerman Castle is definitely one of the spots we recommend visiting if you decide to head upstate.

We love the thrill of exploring mysterious locations, with some of the most incredible historical facts. The stories are always intriguing!

See below what our friends from Untapped Cities said about it:

“Recently, we shared a drone video by the crew Abandoned NY. Don’t to be confused with Abandoned NYC, the website and book by Will Ellis, of North Brother Island.

At the time, they told us their next video would be of Bannerman Island. This former munitions facility designed like a fairy-tale European castle looms over the Hudson River Valley.

That video was recently released, reinforcing the group’s penchant for extremely dramatic soundtracks and stunning aerial shots of storied, abandoned places.

Since our last visit there, stabilizing elements have been added. That somewhat make the impact of the castle, but it’s still an amazing place to see.

The best part: you can actually visit Bannerman Island yourself. Tours are led in partnership between the Bannerman Island Trust and New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.”

In addition, their most sought-after tours last 2.5 hours and leave from Beacon. They cost $35/person.

By the way, since you’ll be boarding the ferry from Beacon, you might want to visit before or after the tour, the renowned contemporary museum Dia: Beacon.

But, they do have a great variety of options.

There’s even an option to the sport-lovers: “Bannerman Island Guided Tour & Mini Hike to the Summit” where you arrive at the top neat sunset time! Gorgeous view, guys!

Lastly, many of our readers and clients don’t have time to organize these type of activities, so they ask our team of experts to set it all up. It’s also a great option of companies that want to offer unforgettable upstate experiences to their clients or team.

Skydiving In New York: If You Love A Challenge, Head Upstate

Day Trips and Travel Skydiving Malone Parachute Club Vermont by William Klein for Harpers Bazaar

Many people that come to NY or even live here, have no idea of the beautiful upstate New York’s nature scene is. One of our Contributors, Marcela Brasil, decided to go upstate – border with Vermont – for a thrilling and adventurous experience: Skydiving in New York!

Day Trips and Travel Skydiving Malone Parachute Club Vermont by DoNorthMagazine

Many people that come to NY for the first time, or that dream about coming to visit this beautiful concrete jungle, and even people that have been here countless times, have no idea of the beauty of upstate New York.

The drive is breathtaking with surprising views – so different from the City. Plus, places are not as far as you might initially think. You can hike, bike, practice for your upcoming marathon, picnic, do kayaking, camp and a huge list of other activities.

Renting a car is far from being a hassle, since it’s quite easy with rates as low as $50-$60/day, or even rates of $150/day (not bad at all!) for cars like Range Rovers and Porsche Cayenne, with our Partners, to drive in great style!

Take a look at what Marcela thought about her exciting skydiving experience:

“Door is open,” the pilot said. From the tiny airplane window all I could see were clouds. It was cold and windy, and I am not going to lie: I wanted to give up. But…it was too late as I could hear the clinging of the hooks that would hold the instructor and I together. Each click, making the latches tighter and tighter.

I was already high up in the sky, wearing a bulky unflattering skydiving suit and getting ready for the big jump into Champlain Valley, in upstate New York.

Suddenly, I was free falling from 12,000 feet above the ground. It lasted nearly a minute, but it definitely felt longer.

Back flips and a few 360-degree free-fall turns to spicy it up a bit were part of the show, as if skydiving itself wasn’t radical enough.

The fear of the free fall disappeared as I started appreciating the mind-blowing view of the North Country and its picturesque and beautiful landscapes. All I could feel up there was an inexpressible sensation of peace and freedom, as I felt fully isolated from the world.

New York State is way bigger than the crazy Big Apple, with its endless skyscrapers and overcrowded touristic spots. Whoever desires to see breathtaking landscapes, a quick drive to places located in upstate New York is essential.

I lived for many years in Plattsburgh, a four-hour drive from New York City, and located nearby the Canadian border. Upstate New York was the place I chose to skydive, and this choice couldn’t have been better. The North Country’s scenic views definitely sets an impression to anyone.

Driving upstate is so far the most beautiful drive I ever did — and I’ve driven all through the West Coast before! It doesn’t matter which season it is, I am sure you will be as amazed, as I always am. My favorite season to enjoy the driving view is the Fall, since you can experience the colorful fall foliage from far up.

Talking about seasons, skydiving is a different experience depending on the season as well. Due to super low temperatures, it is usually closed during the Winter and early Spring.

When I skydived, it was during the first few weeks into Fall, and the leaves were still pretty green. I am planning on doing it again but, this time, as soon as the leaves start falling. I am sure it will be a thrilling experience, too!

Whenever I get overwhelmed from the busy New Yorker life, I get a car and drive North to clear up my mind or to just breathe some fresh air.

I’m sure I’m not alone on these urges!

If that doesn’t work, I’ll put on a bulky flight suit, pretend I’m not afraid of height and simply jump out of an airplane from 12,000 feet, and disconnect with the world to reconnect with my inner self.

Below are a few places you can contact to Skydive upstate, but the one I went to was Malone Parachute Club.

I paid $220 for the jump and it was worth every-single-dollar! There are other prices/options too.

So, you might want to add onto your bucket list: Skydiving in New York!

Tastings In New York And Upstate That Will Blow Your Mind

Dining Red Hook Winery Tastings Glamour Mag Outdoor

We contribute with Glamour Brazil magazine and on this post we wrote about great spots for tastings in New York and Upstate.

Here is the Portuguese version and below, the English version:

New York is not only a perfect place for people who love art, shows, nightlife, shopping, gastronomy, but the “city that never sleeps” offers great options for those who enjoy wine, beer, whiskey and gin tastings.

Since several of these tastings take place inside their own factories, many are located in Brooklyn – a neighborhood big enough to host these huge buildings.

Another cool spot is a winery only 2 hours from Manhattan with tastings, outdoor yoga classes and happy hours with jazz music.

Garrison: A Peaceful Weekend Getaway In New York

Day Trips and Travels Garrison Hudson Valley By Jake Rajs

Garrison is located only 50 miles North of Manhattan and has some of the most spectacular sceneries close by. So, if you’re the adventurous type, this is the place to go for a peaceful weekend getaway in New York!

Garrison has become one of the most popular hideaways of the super successful New Yorkers that look for peace and quiet. Why? Most of the houses are totally isolated from “civilization” giving them down time after a stressful week.

The city center is super tiny. There, you will find an art center that offers classes for kids and adults and a charming local library.

It’s a great place for canoeing in the Hudson River. Many adventurer enthusiasts head up there to explore New York’s nature and wildlife.

If you enjoy golf,  there are two golf courses to play around. One is the 9-hole Highland Country Club, and the 18-hole Garrison Golf Club.

A few other places to visit while you’re in town:

  • Manitoga / The Russel Wright Design Center – A home, studio, and woodland garden created by the industrial designer, Russel Wright, between 1942 and 1976.
  • Boscobel House & Gardens – They are one of the leading historic house museums in the Unites States. The mansion holds the finest collection of New York Neoclassical furniture and it’s location offers a breathtaking view of the Hudson Valley.
  • Garrison Art Center – They are focused on promoting the creation, exhibition and enjoyment of art!
  • Constitution Marsh Audubon Center & Sanctuary – Comprised of 270 acres of tidal marsh in the Hudson Highlands, Constitution Marsh serves as critical natural habitat for birds and other wildlife of the Hudson River Estuary.

There are beautiful houses around town and it’s a great place for weddings too!

Also, Garrison is just 10 minutes away is Cold Spring, where you can have a nice dinner with wine and buy groceries. We simply love this small and super charming village!

And still, only 15-20min car ride, you can check out the renowned contemporary art museum called Dia:Beacon.

Enjoy this a peaceful weekend getaway in New York!

They offer a BootLab where you can buy and customize your boots with the renowned bootfitter, Mark Stewart.

The resort has a few dining options. You can try Rock’n Mexicana and Mulligan’s Pub. But, you can also choose from one of their many on-mountain dining spots!

So, for a lunch break or to finish the day, you can choose from burgers, to waffles, barbecue, and even sushi! They offer a great variety for all tastes.

Plus, they have great options for coffees, pastries, soups and sandwiches too!

If you’re not the skier-type, the resort is also a really great option to go during the hotter months.

They have countless outdoor activities from radical sports to golfing.

People have no idea how beautiful and green the state of New York is, so have fun exploring this fantastic place just a few hours from Manhattan. It’s definitely one of the best skiing getaways upstate New York.
