Get Fit with World Famous Fight Experts at Renzo Gracie Fight Academy

Fitness Health Renzo Gracie Fight Academy Fernanda Paronetto Daniel Gracie Nica

I worked today from one of the places I love the most, in Williamsburg, when two guys arrived and sat beside me, at the bar. I’m great at starting conversations with random strangers and this time, it lead me to learn more about Renzo Gracie Fight Academy NYC where world famous fight experts meet.

I always say that every cool girl, is half boy. Impossible not to agree, right!? While I was working today from Beco Bar, today I started a conversation with two guys.

These guys were Daniel Gracie and Nica. They start telling me about their Fight Academy just around the corner called Renzo Gracie Fight Academy.

I was crazy looking for a good place to go back to practicing Muay Thai, which I practiced for over 1 year back home. So, I’m definitely signing up with them later today for classes!

Their 1st academy was Founded by the famous Renzo Gracie 20 years ago. It opened right across from the Madison Square Garden where they still are today.

Many of their students were based in Brooklyn, so in 2011, they opened the Williamsburg location. There they have modalities like the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai, but they also have spaces dedicated for weight training. Classes are not only for adults, but also for kids!

It’s surely one of the best fighting academies in NY  and I knew about them from back home in Brazil. Famous guys like Anthony Bourdain and Guy Ritchie have trained there too!

Daniel told me one of the funniest stories that happened with him and Guy Ritchie.

He was always training with Guy, and one night Guy asked “Do you want to come with me tonight to my wife’s show?”, and Daniel answered “Yeah, of course!”.

They got into Guy’s car and when Daniel noticed, they were entering Madison Square Garden. So, he asked Guy, “Wow, your wife must be pretty famous to be singing here!”

Obviously, Guy thought that Daniel was joking and he called Renzo Gracie telling what had just happened. He handed over the phone so Daniel and Renzo could talk, when Renzo said, “Daniel, that is Guy Richie!”

Daniel had no idea that he was THE Guy Richie, even though he loves Guy’s work as a movie director. He turned in amazement and said, “No way! I love your work! I think you’re one of the best film directors in the World!” Hahaha…

Well, obviously they still train together and are close friends today.

Daniel and Nica, thank you so much for a great “bar talk” and see you guys soon on the fighting floor!

Oh! If you like UFC, on November 12th, the 1st UFC will be hosted in NYC at the Madison Square Garden. Their academy will have 5 students fighting the Championship!!

Berimbau do Brasil: Authentic Brazilian Cuisine In The Greenwich Village

Dining Berimbau do Brasil Restaurant Shrimp

In the Greenwich Village neighborhood, you can find an authentic Brazilian restaurant named Berimbau do Brasil.

The “berimbau” is a Brazilian instrument with African roots commonly used in the capoeira martial arts dance. It has a very unique and peculiar sound!

To start, the restaurant’s décor is very simple with exposed brick walls and dim lights. Music is obviously the cheerful Brazilian tunes that makes any one cheer up!

Portions are generous and prices are modest. What to try? Well, let us help you out, since we are experts in the Brazilian cuisine!

As appetizers try:

  • Pastel – a Brazilian empanada
  • Pão de Queijo – the famous homemade and freshly baked cheese bread
  • Acarajé – a mashed black-eyed peas cake w/ vatapá and topped sauteéd shrimp
  • Lula – fried calamari with spicy tomato sauce

In addition, for the mains, you can order:

  • Picanha – a succulent prime Brazilian cut Top Sirloin served with vinaigrette, yuca flour, garlic rice and beans

Lastly, for dessert, two super traditional options:

  • Authentic Açai Bowl made for real Açai Lovers
  • Brigadeiro – the Nation’s favorite! A small soft chocolate sweet made with cocoa and condensed milk

The famous caipirinhas are made to perfection, so be sure to order one specially if you’ve never tried on! Plus, the wine list is carefully edited to match the cuisine.

Also, the staff is very welcoming – as Brazilians commonly are – and professional, adding sincere hospitality to the delicious offerings and vibrant locale. You’ll feel just as if you were in Brazil.

By the way, if you’re looking for a few more Brazilian spots, here are a few more you’ll enjoy!

Beco Bar is one of our top picks and you’ll probably bump into our Founder, Fê Paronetto, there. Similarly, Miss Favela is a place if you’re the energetic type, enjoy some day parties and traditional Samba music.

In addition, have you heard of Capoeira? It’s a very typical Brazilian dance and martial art that mixes dance elements with acrobatic movements. So, if you want to try a class, we recommend with guys at Capoeira Brooklyn.

Sunday in Brooklyn restaurant is where you’ll find the cool kids

Dining Sunday in Brooklyn Restaurant Squash

Last Friday, I had an incredible dinner at Sunday in Brooklyn, a new restaurant that opened just around 1 month ago, in South Williamsburg. This is the place where the cool kids hang, so be sure to check it out!

I loved every single detail, from the house they’re in, the décor, the R&B style music with a fantastic playlist…to the drinks, the food, and certainly the dessert!

The space is beautiful, with a full bar, rustic wood decor, dim light (but not too dark…just perfect) and a great counter at the front, where you can see the preparation of the dishes.

The entire staff is very polite and happy…the original Brooklyn service style!

I was lucky enough to meet the owners of the restaurant, Todd Enany and Adam Landsman, that were mingled within the waiters and staff, serving every table and making sure everything was working seamlessly! Jaime Young, the Chef, was at full speed in the kitchen!

They told a bit about their story and how it all started.

Both of them worked in the restaurant business and had a great background on how the entire business works.

Back then, Sundays was their only “day off”, and they were tired of trying to find a place where you’d have a great cup of coffee, amazing cocktails, good food, beautiful crowd and a unique playlist…all in one!

This is what Adam told us about how it all started:

So, for my former job at Major Food Group, walking through the green markets were always good inspirations for food and trying to figure out what is was. One day I suddenly I hear someone calling my name and I turn around at it was Jaime. He was working at one of the farmer market stands helping out one of the farmers since he had just left his job.

He wanted to open a restaurant in Brooklyn that was very vegetable focused, that was something close to home and that was relatable, fun and accessible.

I thought it was all very crazy and serendipitous. I hadn’t seen him in years. We saw that our our values were the same, the sustainability practices and our relationship with farmers and foragers was so important. Right after that, he came to cook for us and just crushed it. This dish (FYI: the one I was eating – the honey nut squash), was the second dish he did, and it was created during a 5 minute conversation. We just couldn’t believe it. It was awesome!

Here is what we had:

  • Buckwheat sourdough with beet butter
  • Black cod pastrami, rye sour cream and garden pickles
  • Honey squash, cultured cheese, crushed nuts and seeds
  • Minute steak, spigarello and charred red onions
  • and an “off the menu special, made with cabbage, that was to die for

I was so amazed with the entire dinner experience that I decided to go back for their first brunch weekend…so, Sunday of that same week I went back!

And guess what?! Everything obviously exceeded my expectations.

This is what I had (sharing with a friend, of course, lol):

  • Carrot bread with ginger cheese
  • Grain bowl with barley, eggs, spices kale, mustard greens and avocado
  • Cheddar scrambled eggs with home fries and sausage
  • Special version of the avocado toast
  • Malted pancakes, hazelnut maple praline, brown butter
  • Black coffee

There were countless tables ordering their famous Bloody Mary, which is one of the best sellers, called Sunday Bloody Sunday! So, you should try it if you’re into cocktails!

Be sure you add them to your top places to visit when you come to New York and visit Williamsburg, in Brooklyn! Maybe, you’ll even bump into me, since I just became their #1 fan!

They just launched their newest restaurant called Rule of Thirds, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn! And, if you feel like exploring the area, you can head up a few blocks to Greenpoint!

We know that New York has it all when it comes to food! Beco Bar, the coolest Brazilian place in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is one of our to-go spots year round!

Actually, we’re at Beco all the time! Some people say they are located in Williamsburg, while others say it’s already Greenpoint. Regardless of the right answer, this is truly a local’s pick!

We’ve been there early for breakfast, during their busy lunch hours, for an afternoon coffee, then for happy hour that lead to dinner and also for their late nights with live music or DJs!

Yup, we are totally addicted to them!

Their team is great and always smiling, with the best energy possible! Henrique, Ale, Anita, Andressa, Daiane, Steph, Luis…just to name a few! Plus, the guys in the kitchen really create miracle dishes from their “restricted space”, since it’s is pretty small.

It’s an intimate place (Just like we like it!), but they do have a few table outside when the sun is out. They do have the tables out even during colder times of the year, if you’re the hot blooded type.

The music is obviously very good Brazilian and Latin tunes and everyone there has a sincere happiness vibe that is surely contagious! Very Brazilian, of course!

For brunch, we had the eggs florentine that are to die for. We also tried the famous rabanada: french toast made w/baguette, cinnamon & sugar, mixed berries, & maple syrup, served w/choice of bacon, linguiça or turkey bacon. We asked for a vegetarian version that was immediately adapted.

For lunch or dinner, one of our favorite picks is a very traditional Brazilian dish called P.F. (a.k.a. Prato Feito). You can order the ingredients you want like: white rice, an extraordinary side of beans – our Founder Fê Paronetto loves, a Brazilian type of very tasty kale, zucchini, farofa and sunny side up eggs!

To nibble on, you can try their pão de queijo – the famous Brazilian cheese bread – or the coxinha with chicken.

And, for dessert, we never forget the brigadeiro. It’s a type of chocolate truffle ball – a very typical sweet all locals love.

If you enjoy good strong coffee, you’ll surely love their options!

Oh! They have great live bands every Fridays night from 9pm – 11pm, Saturdays they have DJ’s from 4pm – 7pm and Sundays another great lineup of live bands from 5pm – 8pm!

One of the bands we love the most, plays a typical Brazilian music style called Choro de Samba, or Chorinho. It’s the “root” from where Samba came from, it’s mostly instrumental with practically no voice, and it’s called Choro because it’s as if the instruments are crying. Choro, means cry, in Portuguese.

Get ready to immerse into the Brazilian vibe…but be careful, it’s addictive! Beco Bar is cash only, but if you forget you money, they have an ATM inside.

If you want to explore the neighborhood of Greenpoint, take a look at our Greenpoint Self-Guided Tour and have fun!
