STORY at Macy’s: Reinventing Themes, Curating Object, Anticipating Trends

Let’s reinvent everything every 4 to 8 weeks! “STORY at Macy’s is a space that has the point of view of a magazine, changes like a gallery and sells things like a store.”

STORY at Macy’s has a fantastic concept, right? We love the math: reinventing themes, curating object and anticipating trends!

To start, the space was launched in the end of 2011 by Rachel Shechtman. She’s been was nominated as “one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business and Fortune Magazine’s 40 under 40”.

So how did it all start?

“Founded by Rachel Shechtman, a former brand consultant for Kraft, TOMS shoes and Lincoln, the idea was to create a retail concept that would serve as a matchmaker between brands and consumers, integrating strategies of marketing, merchandising, and business development.”

So, let’s go back and understand what their concept actually means.

Well, every four to eight weeks, the 2000 sq ft store completely reinvents itself presenting new themes, objects and trends!

They do a complete makeover from merchandise and store design to floor plan and fixtures.

A few themes they’ve explored are:

  • Design: During NYC Design week)
  • Style.Tech: Connects the dots between style and technology)
  • His: An experiential dialogue about men’s grooming and style)
  • Good: Tapping into our collective power to make change)
  • and other theses like Love, New York, Wellness, Art and more!

As Beth Comstock, CMO and GE at STORY says:

“There is a huge value for brands in having a place where you can experiment, and to have a lab that actually creates a profit and a recurring revenue stream, and gives people a good experience.”

We couldn’t agree more! We love the entire concept, the product curation and specially the experience provided to every single customer that walks into the store!

So, go see what we mean by: reinventing themes, curating object and anticipating trends! They have closed their Chelsea store and now can be found in multiple Macy’s department stores!

We are all about local businesses, but in this case, STORY grew into STORY at Macy’s and is expanding! If you want to go back to exploring something local, a great spot is Rough Trade, in Williamsburg.

Hours: Check store hours online.

Location: Multiple Macy’s locations, please check online.

We love these small, local businesses off the beaten track. On the other hand, there is another entire list of more well-known brands that are still important to talk about. They are a more well know, but nonetheless, offer a fantastic array of products.

Furthermore, the city if overflowing with talented artists and creative and we do believe that the more of them, the merrier.

John Derian Company was founded in the year of 1989 in New York City.

“John’s decoupage plates, platters, paperweights, coasters and bowls are handmade in his studio in New York City. In addition, he’s employs a small staff of artisans to assist with production.”

So, in no time, the most renowned home and fashion publications featured in some his vintage and handmade pieces. It attracted a lot of attention – not only in the US.

“The full range of John Derian pieces, including his ephemera and furniture line, is available at his own retail shops in the East Village. There, it also carries vintage and antique imports, bed and table linens, stationery, plate-ware, vintage and new lighting. Plus, you can find an ever-changing assortment of one-of-a-kind curios.”

As a result, after a lot of hard work and dedication, his work spread all around! Some of the best retailers and home stores across the globe, sells his creations!

THIS STORE UNFORTUNATELY PERMANENTLY CLOSED AND ONLY SELLS ONLINE!

Other Criteria, co-founded by Damien Hirst, opened its doors in SoHo on May 6th, 2014.

‘What we set out to do was to make modern art approachable and attractive. Other Criteria is all about working with artists to make things that they want to create and other people want to buy.

It’s as simple as walking into one of the shops or clicking through the website, and buying something there and then. It shouldn’t intimidate anyone.’ ~ Damien Hirst

To begin with, you’ll run into the most amusing and sometimes even challenging and disruptive art pieces. The store is full of color, styles and life!

So, you can expect to find snake sculptures and toilet paper with prints or hand signatures. Throughout the walls, you’ll see countless frames with Hirst’s exclusive prints. That is to say, we personally love the polka-dots series and the uplifting sequence of butterflies, many times placed in a mandala shape.

Plus, the mix set of coffee cups, wall clocks, colorful chairs and even a small version of the sculpture “Anatomy of an Angel”. So, it’s hard to pick only one!

But wait! We can’t forget to mention the various prints, sculptures and other objects with his notorious Skulls!

We actually love them all! In addition, q few of the most coveted ones are the: Magnificent Head Glorious Gold and the Transcendent Head.

In fact, he created a version, covered completely in diamonds! It is dated back to 2007 and was called For the Love of God. The price? Too high to even understand or imagine! Thus, as stated on Wikipedia:

“Costing £14 million to produce, the work was placed on its inaugural display at the White Cube gallery in London in an exhibition Beyond belief with an asking price of £50 million. This would have been the highest price ever paid for a single work by a living artist.”

Surreal, right? We have a picture of it on our image gallery above!

To conclude, be sure to go into the store with time. It will be an amazing adventure into Damien Hirst’s mind and universe! For this reason, take time to explore, and we are sure that you’ll leave with multiple, amusing purchases!

Hard not to…

After exploring the store, you can grab a bite or a cocktail at Café Select, Miss Lily’s or at a secret basement restaurant called The Ship!

AFTER 7 YEARS, UNFORTUNATELY THEY’VE DECIDED TO STOP PUBLISHING INVENTORY!

The founders focus on exploring a unique and global perspective on design, craftsmanship and culture, instead of only scouting trends.

Furthermore, the goal is to offer an experience based on brands, designers and artists that have the commitment to quality and desire for innovation!

The magazine emphasizes on accomplished journalism and amazing imagery. In addition, they are working to represent contemporary icons alongside future influencers.

So, guided by the same principles, the Inventory store offers a carefully considered selection of brands, publications and objects. They are all available online and at retail spaces in New York and Vancouver. You can also find them at Dover Street Market’s London and Tokyo locations.

Unfortunately, they’ve decided to stop publishing the magazine in 2016.

Below you can see the letter written by Ryan Willms, the Founder:

“Inventory Magazine: 2009-2016 — After seven years, we’ve decided to stop publishing Inventory. We’re extremely grateful to everyone that has supported the magazine by advertising with us or selling it in their stores; to those of you that have purchased a copy; and to the people and brands that have helped to bring our pages to life over the course of thirteen issues.

Making this magazine has been such a valuable experience. The lessons learned, knowledge gained, and relationships cemented will never be replaced, and it’s a journey that I’ll remember forever. Due to the content and the people involved, it’s been a very personal project from the start, and I have to say the biggest thank you to my colleagues along the way. Plus, I want to acknowledge the pivotal work of Simon Roe from the beginning to the very end, as well as the roles played by Philip Watts and Owen Parrott, Stephen Mann and Anthony Hooper, Matthew Klassen and Chris Allen. Without your dedication Inventory would not have reached the same heights.

I look back on the legacy of what we’ve created with awe and pride, but the publishing landscape has shifted and it feels like the right time to move on, to conclude things with arguably our best issue, and pursue new challenges and opportunities.

Sincerely,
Ryan Willms”

We wish you guys all the best and can’t wait to see your upcoming projects!

With design in mind, you might want to take a look at a post we did about Bang & Olufsen. They have a fantastic vintage collection that will enrich your home’s design.

The Creative Young Brazilian Community In NYC

Culture & Music Alessio Romano Michel Nasrallah

We contributed during 1 year for Glamour Brazil. This post was about the creative young Brazilian community in NYC.

See the original Portuguese version and below, the English version:

New York is known for many things. The food, the corporate madness, the great Broadway and Off Broadway shows, the incredible fashion world and uncontrollable consumption of tourists and New Yorkers.

The beauty of Central Park and the fantastic art world are unquestionable. Lastly, it’s also know an “incubator” for new, upcoming talents.

We share with you the story of some young folks that are making a difference here. Others are just starting out their promising career and they sure have an incredible work worth following.

Culture & Music Max Poglia Working

Max Poglia

The Brazilian with clear Italian descent (beginning by his name), Maximiliano Poglia, also known as Max, is a designer and lives in New York since 2009. Max has worked with the renowned and always crowded restaurant Buvette, that we love.

He has created a line of exclusive products for the Bedford Post – a charming hotel in Bedford – part of the Relais & Chateaux group. And, has collaborated with various New York brands like TheBKCircus, a man’s fashion brand.

Today he has launched his own product collection with stylish leather handbags. His handmade knives that are not made of stainless steel purposely to allow the product to age. Plus, the soft unique fleece blankets have no artificial coloring and beautiful leather details.

You can find his products at stores like 3×1 in Soho, Modern Anthology in Dumbo, the Gentry in Williamsburg, the Warm in Nolita, The Space NYC, in Bushwick and a few other places around town!

Culture & Music The Brazilian Johnsons Sitting

The Brazilian Johnsons

Berklee College of Music College, in Boston, is known for having huge music alumni stars like Diana Krall, Quincy Jones, John Mayer, Esperanza Spalding, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford (both from Aerosmith), among many others!

A band named The Brazilian Johnsons was created by five Brazilians who studied together at Berklee and now live in Brooklyn, obviously. Michel Nasrallah, the vocalist and guitarist, André Vasconcelos rocks on the guitar, Bruno Esrubilsky hits the drums, Apoena Frota plays the bass and João Nogueira on the keyboard. All fantastic musicians!

Michel tells us that their – classic rock’n’roll – was inspired by bands like Rolling Stones, Beatles, Queen, Led Zepplin, Cold Chisel, Lynyrd Skynryd, AC / DC, just to list a few.

In December 2013 they released their first CD called “Howdy Duty” and made its debut with an exclusive show at Piano’s, located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The songs are amazing, with a very particular style, exclusive copyrights lyrics that speak of obstacles. It talks about difficulties encountered at the beginning of their careers. Also, they describe the challenges of being new in New York, numerous teachings, the experience of broken hearts and simply how life may be surprising.

The songs are for sale on iTunes! Here is the music video of one of their most successful songs:

Culture & Music Alessio Romano Band

Alessio Romano

This an Italian artist has several “gifts”. He’s a drummer, musical producer, audio engineer and also photographer. With all these different talents, Alessio Romano decided to open his own studio in Brooklyn in the beginning of 2014, called Studio42. There he can work with music, video and photography.

I’m personally a huge fan of his photography work. With spontaneous images and a perfect light, his pictures definitely surprise viewers with all the captured details and his critical eye!

Culture & Music Tali Ratzon and the Grind

Tali Ratzon

Last, but definitely not least, with an Israeli and American descent, the singer Tali Ratzon! She arrived in New York in 2009 chasing a dream!

A common story to hear in New York…

Tali says she’s “just a girl with a guitar,” but her music certainly does make everyone want to dance! She sings pop music, mixed with funk and bringing influences from Latin rhythms and reggae music, i.e. World Pop.

One of the songs I enjoy the most and sing by heart is “About to Pop”.

Take a look at her the music video:

So, you all have to agree, this guys are really going some awesome work around here, right!?
