The mission at FEED is simple: “We create good products that help feed children around the world.

With the start of every new day, we see people questioning everything that’s going on, from climate change and natural disasters, to the undeniable help that underprivileged communities need.

“It’s hard to believe that hunger is a daily reality for 795 million people around the world—limiting human flourishing, health and potential in far too many communities. The most vulnerable are often children, whose mental and physical growth, and ultimately potential to create a better future, is dependent on this most basic human need.”

It seems that world we once knew is now becoming a difficult place to live, but what gives us hope are the thousands of people spread across the planet spreading the good!

New York is one of the busiest cities in the world, but even so, we have special people working to improve the lives of others

FEED is a project idealized and led by Lauren Bush, niece of ex-President George W. Bush and Ellen Gustafson, who started her career working with Communication at the United Nations (UN).

FEED Projects LLC

Lauren was a model for Tommy Hilfiger for two years in her yearly years in college, but shortly after that she became a spokesperson for the UN World Food Program (WFP). This was the trigger for changing her career and her view on the world

After her first trip, where she faced the harsh reality of children on the verge of death in Guatemala, Lauren decided to do more than just be a “spokesperson”.

It was there that she joined Ellen, who was also looking to do something bigger.

Lauren’s passion for fashion and design and Ellen’s desire to do something different had finally merged. The project is simple: a reusable bag, only with the project’s logo, where all income collected is directed directly to the UN World Food Program.

In a short time, the logistics and procedures for the United Nations to sell this bag became so complex and bureaucratic that Lauren and Ellen decided to leave the WFP.

Voilá! FEED Projects was founded!

FEED Projects currently works with numerous organizations such as WFP, of course, and others like UNICEF. Sales are mostly made online, where you will see how your purchase will help these children.

You can literally buy a $60 scholarship and feed a child for an entire year! How incredible is that, right!?

In addition, FEED Shop & Café is their first physical location in New York, located inside the majestic Empire Stores in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

“The shop features an assortment of our newest products, special in-store exclusives and a rotating curation of other socially conscious finds. Our cafe serves the FEED Heritage coffee blend, roasted in partnership with La Colombe, and a delicious selection of pastries and nibbles.”

Most of the bags are made in China, but the most expensive leather items are produced by hand in Kenya and Guatemala.

The models are as diverse as backpacks, classic totes and some duffle bags. And yet, the girls made a line called “Feed NYC” in 2010, with more elaborate bags made by the local clothing industry (of course, to incentivize the local economy) and were sold at Bergdorf Goodman. Oh! Shop the new FEED arrivals!

The project has grown so much that now several brands have become FEED partners. Companies like: Target, Disney, Pottery Barn, Clarins, Whole Foods Market, Gap, Tory Burch, Rachel Roy, DKNY, Links of London, Godiva, TOMS and Nordstrom are part of it.

And also, you can do more!

You can host your own Feed Supper! Here is how it works:

Let’s come together to help our neighbors!

Today, in neighborhoods across the United States, there are over 40 million people who aren’t sure where they will find their next meal. By hosting a FEED Supper, you will join a community helping to change that.

Host a dinner party that provides meals for more than just your friends

Your FEED Supper can be as simple as a pizza party or as formal as a seated dinner. Just ask your guests to make a donation to help fight hunger in advance of the gathering. It’s that simple.

The money you raise will help provide much-needed meals to families across America, through our giving partner, Feeding America. Learn more about their work to end hunger.

Let’s collaborate as well?

Finally, if you live in New York and you’d like to actively volunteer in a feeding program, our Founder Fernanda coordinates one called Friend’s in Need that happens every Saturday morning, at Tompkins Square Park in the East Village.

We would love to have you there helping us!

Hours:
Monday – Saturday: 8am – 7pm
Sunday: 8am – 6pm

Location: 55 Water Street

Louis Mendes: Renowned NYC Street Photographer

City Secrets Louis Mendes NYC Street Photographer Fernanda Paronetto Thumnbnail

If you’ve walked attentively through New York, you’ve probably crossed paths with Louis Mendes, one of the most renowned NYC street photographer. I have a cool story to tell you about the day I wrote about him for the first time.

City Secrets Louis Mendes NYC Street Photographer Fernanda Paronetto
Fernanda Paronetto with Louis Mendes, a renowned NYC Street Photographer. Clicked by Bruce Byers.

A little over 5 years ago, when I started Behind the Scenes NYC (BTSNYC) from my room, in my mom’s house in São Paulo, Brazil my idea (which still remains strong!) was to write about and help spread the love for small, independently owned businesses around New York that have some of the best products and services, far away from the touristy scene!

I also wanted to share the story of New Yorkers that have been leaving their mark around town!

My love for New York has always been something inexplicable that I myself can’t really describe.

Hence my decision of leaving a great job, a 3 year long relationship, my home and move to New York City alone, unemployed but super happy to start a new phase!

Before moving I worked 1 year on BTSNYC from (shocker!!!!) my room in Brazil late hours at night, that was the only time I had free.

With, of course, the help of a bunch on NY-based friends that were my “eyes” – until I was actually able to move!

The Queens-born, Harlem-based photographer, Louis Mendes always called my attention not only because of his flawless style and amazingly cool vintage camera. But, because of his passion to register people in public places and freeze a special moment in time!

I NEVER ask to take pictures with famous people, and New Yorkers know what I’m talking about, hahaha, but I really could not NOT take a picture with him, 5 years after writing about him on my Instagram, when I was still in Brazil!

Louis, it was SO NICE to officially meet you!! Such an honor and I love your work!

And, thank you Bruce Byers, another fantastic photographer, for taking the shot!! It was great to meet you and I’m looking forward to see more of your work!

If you guys are ever in New York, be sure to keep your eyes open! Maybe, you’ll be lucky enough to cross paths with Louis Mendes!

Burrow: French And Japanese Inspired Pastry Shop In DUMBO

Our Contributor, Helenita Salom, shared with us a delightful place to visit in DUMBO, that we love! We’ve written about it in the past and this is a fresh update!

DUMBO, which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a wonderful, constantly evolving neighborhood in Brooklyn. Very easily accessible by the “F” train if you are coming from Manhattan, it is one of my favorite neighborhood for its charm, unique stores, beautiful views of Lower Manhattan, and extremely friendly walkable streets.

It has also been, for a number of years now, a growing tech start-up scene — but more about this, as well as the other charms of DUMBO, in another post perhaps!

What drew me to DUMBO for this visit was none other than Burrow, a French pastry shop with Japanese influences owned by Ayako Kurokawa.

“Ayako Kurokawa is a patissier, a pastry sculptor, and a food stylist in NYC. She picks her inspirations from her restaurant experiences, Brooklyn life, and day dreaming in the subway.

Her pastry recipes are based on classic French recipes, but are developed with the Japanese and American influences she had growing up. She developed the portrait and sculpture cakes from her love for stone carving and clay sculpting.”

I first came across Burrow on Instagram about one year ago. I saw a picture Burrow had posted of a Mer-man. That’s right, a fully iced sugar cookie shaped and decorated like a male mermaid. Immediately I knew I had to make a trip out to DUMBO and visit this bakery for myself and check out this superbly made portrait cookie of a mer-man.

Located on Jay Street inside the lobby of an old standard industrial looking building, is Burrow. I almost completely missed it on my first visit down there.

Once inside Burrow though, you immediately feast your eyes on beautiful seasonal cakes, cookies and many more treats. It all spans far beyond just the portrait cookies which, from what I understand, you order in bulk in advance and aren’t sold in the store. I must say the charm of Burrow did not disappoint.

I have been numerous times since my first visit last year, and among my favorite is the strawberry short cake. Light, creamy and just enough sugar to leave you satisfied, yet not in a food coma, this is a must have if it’s available.

If you are a fan of different textures in your dessert you will enjoy this too, as it has a few different layers to it which all complement each other perfectly.

I will most definitely be returning soon.

DUMBO is a fantastic and super cool neighborhood to explore and even stay, if you’re in NYC for a few days.

The 1Hotel opened its first location in Manhattan and is surely one of the best additions to Brooklyn! This hotel is one of our top picks if you’re more a Brooklyn-style traveller.

If you’re looking for a off-the-beaten track spot to go at night, St. Ann’s Warehouse is the place to go! They not only showcase the most unique concerts and theater performances, but the place is breathtaking. It’s located right by the East River and was a former Church in the 1980’s.

Be sure to save some time to just talk around the place and be sure to take that perfect picture of the Manhattan Skyline.

Oh! And even though quite touristy, be sure to see Jane’s Carrousel, just a few steps from the warehouse.

Hours:
Monday – Friday: 9am – 6pm
Saturday 1pm – 5pm

Location: 68 Jay Street, #119

Komeeda organized a super unique and surprising dinner under the bridge. Chef Shuchi, from 29. Private Kitchen, was in charge during the night and did an extraordinary job!

As we arrived, there was this huge tabled set up for us, right by the riverside. Behind us, we had the beautiful Jane’s Carrousel.

Our group was small, and the perfect size for this experience. We all found our places and sat to talk and start drinking some wine.

The dishes were Indian-inspired and were very tasty. The presentation was also fantastic. Chef Shuchi was literally cooking the food in this super cool, portable oven just a few feet from us.

One of the highlights, even though there obviously were many through out the night, was seeing the sun set behind Manhattan.

After it set, the entire city started lighting up and the glow is indescribable. It’s a view that never gets old, that for sure! Plus, it always reminds us why we moved to New York City!

Komeeda creates unique and flavorful dining experiences throughout New York City, helping foodies discover new restaurants & culinary talents. Plus, they help explore creative dishes and interact with fellow foodies during their all-inclusive food events.

You just need to stay tuned and sign up as soon as they announce the dinner, since spots are super limited!

We’re on the countdown for the next event!

The Foragers City Grocer opened in 2005 in DUMBO and carries locally grown organic produce, pastured meats and fresh local dairy.

Foragers is your go-to destination for the best, carefully-selected, locally sourced, and artfully prepared food. The demand we saw for clean and ethical foods inspired us to open our market in Chelsea, which also includes a restaurant and wine shop.

All the products featured come from trusted producers, or hand picked from our own farm in Canaan, New York.

The clients like to know where their food is grown, processed and handled.

Plus, they are interested in learning about the entire process and being sure that they are consuming what there is best in the market!

So, as they explain:

“Our sourcing standards ensure that every product you find at our stores is made honestly with all natural ingredients, grown with integrity, and raised humanely.”

This type of market is right up our alley, so we love every single aspect of it, support them, and hope to spread the work to other like minded people.

In addition, the restaurant is called Table. It runs under the direction of Executive Chef, Nickolas Martinez, and is more than a farm-to-table restaurant. They also grow their own food! Therefore, besides a delicious dinner, you must try their brunch that happens on the weekends.

They have a store in Chelsea too. So, if you don’t want to commute all the way into Brooklyn, to shop, you have another great option!

And, if you want to explore other farm-to-table restaurants, we actually recommend heading upstate NY.

There are countless close by day trips that you can plan for a different weekend. For help organizing it all, contact our concierge experts. In sum, they can cater an exclusive and memorable experience for you!

I believe that everyone, at least once, has ridden a carousel! Kids, teenagers, adults and even the most experienced ones would probably want to try a 2nd, 3rd and even 4th time! It’s just so nostalgic, right?

Plus, rinding a gorgeous, vintage one is even more exciting! Pair that with a perfect skyline of Manhattan and voilá! It becomes an urban fairy tail! Well, it’s certainly OUR urban fairy tail and our hearts do beat faster when we see it.

That is to say that, one of the most amazing carousels you’ll ever see is called Jane’s Carousel. This magnificent art work located inside the Brooklyn Bridge Park, right below the Brooklyn Bridge.

It’s a huge, beautifully restored piece of art with 48 racing hand-carved horses. This classic 3 row beauty was built in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and is opened year-round.

A bit more of history:

The carousel was originally located at Idora Park in Youngstown, Ohio in the early 1920’s. Then, in mid 1980’s, specifically in 1984, the duo Jane and David Walentas purchased it. They prevented it from being completely dismantled and having it’s pieces separately sold off. Lucky us!

That same year, Jane started the restoration with her own hands, at her studio in DUMBO, Brooklyn. It was amazing to see the original coloring of each piece surfacing back.

After documenting every color and every detail was faithfully done, so when the time came to replicate it all on the final pieces, the end result was breathtaking.

Moreover, all the electrical parts and machinery were updated with the latest technologies. And still, over 1200 lights were installed to give the final touch, bringing it to life.

It was finally shown to the public, at the Brooklyn Bridge Park on September 16th, 2011. It surely transformed the this area of Brooklyn’s skyline and has become a dear location in our heart.

It’s definitely something to experience in New York City. So, if you are interested in seeing what it’s all about, but would prefer help of an expert tour guide, contact us.

We’ve done some pretty amazing itineraries for big (and small) Corporate groups and delegations, so if you need help in organizing a special experience for your team or your clients, let us cater it for you.

Hours: Thursday – Sunday: 11am – 6pm

Location: Brooklyn Bridge Park, Dock Street
