Yes, New York is an amazing place to go with kids! So, we put together several kid friendly things to do in New York City to help you out!

There are so many kid friendly things to do in New York City that it can be hard to figure out what to do at first.

If you’re going to the city with kids, it can be even harder.

You might think of New York as the perfect getaway for adults. But, it’s actually set up for kids to have the best time of their lives, and there are many things for kids to do in NYC.

No matter how much time you have in New York, you’re sure to run out of time (and maybe space on your laptop for storing photos if you don’t do a hard drive cleanup before you go!) if you don’t plan ahead and know what you want to do and see.

Here are some of the best things for kids to do in New York City to get your family trip started.

Luna Park

Even though you have to take a 45-minute train ride from midtown Manhattan to get to Luna Park, it’s one of the best things to do in NYC.

Coney Island is known for its fun rides and great street food. While you’re there, don’t forget to try a Nathan’s hot dog or Feltman’s!

There are rides and games for kids and adults of all ages at Luna Park. You can easily spend a whole day there if you don’t plan ahead.

Ellis Island

To get to Ellis Island, you have to take a ferry from Battery Park in Manhattan. It is possible to take a ferry to Ellis Island and then to Liberty Island, where the Statue of Liberty is located.

All immigrants who came to New York did so through Ellis Island, which is now a fascinating museum that tells the stories of the 12 million people who went through the center from 1900 to 1954.

This should be at the top of your list of things to do in New York City with your kids that will both teach them and keep them busy.

Do take a look at an exclusive experience called “Behind The Scenes Tour Of The Abandoned Ellis Island Hospital“! You’ll have access to out of bound spots not offered to the general public that visits Ellis Island! Note: This is recommended to older kids.

The Statue of Liberty

Seeing the Statue of Liberty should be at the top of any New York City visitor’s to-do list. It’s not too difficult to get to because, like Ellis Island, you can take a ferry from Battery Park to get there.

Get to the top of the Crown, if you can. In addition to the amazing scenery, you’ll also get to tick that off your bucket list.

However, keep in mind that you need to be 48 inches tall to go up that high, and there are, as you might think, many narrow steps to climb.

The Statue of Liberty Museum is another must-visit since it houses the historic torch from the statue itself, which measures 16 feet in height, among other artifacts.

Oh, and during the summer, an amazing activity is the jetski ride on the Hudson River! It’s definitely a memorable experience!

New York Transit Museum

Anything different is sure to keep kids very busy. The New York Transit Museum could do very well as a different thing to do in NYC.

It’s in a building that used to be a subway station, so you have to go underground to get there, which is always fun.

Once you get there, you’ll be able to look at old subway trains and even sit in the driver’s seat. You’ll also be able to learn as much as you can about how the huge subway system that so many New Yorkers and tourists use today got started.

It’s a small museum that you can see in about an hour. So, it’s a great place to stop on any day of your trip.

The American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) is a great place to take the kids if you want to figure out what to do in NYC with them.

It is 150 years old and has lots of interesting things to look at that will keep everyone busy for hours.

There are some high-tech things to do, like 3D exhibits, but you can also see some amazing real-world things, like the t-rex skeleton and the famous, huge blue whale model.

Kids ages 5 to 12 can learn how to put dinosaur bones together and do a lot more in the Discovery Room.

Jane’s Carousel

No one can refuse a spin on an old-fashioned carousel at the carnival.

Jane’s Carousel in Empire-Fulton Ferry Park (near the Brooklyn Bridge) is always a terrific time, so be sure to include it in your itinerary when visiting New York City.

Everyone knows about this carousel. It’s one of the last remaining classic carousels, having been constructed in 1922.

It’s a great time, it still operates flawlessly, and it’s a historic piece of New York.

And, not far from Dumbo, be sure to check out Domino Park that was renovated not that long ago. There’s an amazing view of Manhattan, a beautiful wall by the river, food vendors, some activities and sports area.

So, our 1st from the 15 spots in New York for every photographer to explore, is located in Brooklyn!

This photo above is at the intersection of Washington Street and Water Street and is easily classified as one of the most photogenic spots in New York. DUMBO, a neighborhood known for its cobbled streets, got its nickname because it is located right under the Manhattan Bridge (Down Under The Manhattan Bridge – aka DUMBO). Looking at the bridge from the crossroads you can easily see the Empire State Building under its arches. This is the New York that everyone wants to get a taste of

When we think of New York we are often wowed by its majestic value. It’s a place that excites us and a place many have grown up watching on TV. New York is full of areas that bring art to life and are a dream for both filmmakers and photographers alike.

Tourists too, often flock to many places in the city for the perfect Instagram post. If you are in New York, you will probably know of all the great spots to stay. Accommodation in the city is massive, there is something for everyone and if you are traveling and are carrying lots of bulky cases and equipment you may need somewhere to store it. You may want to look at baggage storage to ensure that you have somewhere to keep your things before your next flight.

So, what makes New York tick? Well, plenty!

A little tip: when you travel to New York, it’s important to always respect the daily life of the locals. New York is full of people who have lived here all their lives and tourism can get heavy. There are so many ways to enjoy the view of a point of interest without making tourism a nuisance

#2 New York Public Library

Also known as the Stephen A. Schwarzman building, has been not only the scene of countless blockbuster movies but, on the other hand, it’s a sacred refuge for New Yorkers that need time off from the noise.

#3 The Empire State Building

It’s great and definitely a place to visit if you never have before. But, we do love the Top of the Rock Observation Deck at the Rockefeller Center. Its 360º view is unbeatable.

#4 NY City Hall

Getting married in New York City is the dream of countless brides and brides-to-be out there, right? Well, to make it right – if you do make your dream come true – is go get your Marriage License at New York’s City Hall! So Carrie Bradshaw style…!

#5 Carry Bradshaw’s Apartment

…Which, we can’t forget when talking about the City of Dreams (and fashion, and art, and gastronomy…and…)! Well, it’s the best city. So, you must visit Carry Bradshaw’s apartment in the West Village – or just Village for the locals! 66 Perry Street.

#6 Foley Square

Located right in front of the famous New York County Supreme Court. Remember Harvey Spector and Mike Ross in the series Suits? We miss these guys…

#7 East Village

One of our favorite neighborhoods! It’s crazy (but we’re thankful), how tourists have not yet discovered how awesome the East Village area is! If you’re a food enthusiast, this area a great area to explore countless local gems!

#8 Little Italy

Mangia Che Ti Fa Benne! Literally, it translates to “Eat that it will make you well!”. Italians believe in the power of food and in the beauty of the entire food experience! And, Little Italy will welcome you into this mind set! Be sure to stop at any of the famous restaurants to enjoy pasta or pizza, with a nice glass of wine!

#9 Chinatown

Probably one of the most underrated areas in Manhattan. I guess, people just don’t know their way around the neighborhood, but those that do have a great time exploring speakeasy bars, amazing local restaurants like Buddha Bodai, creative cuisines…and some even venture into those small underground “spas” for a good foot massage.

#10 Soho

Not on the top of our list, but if you’re an Influencer, or aspiring Influencer, the area is the mecca for Instagram Fashion Photography. But yes, SoHo’s cobblestone streets are truly a beautiful background.

#11 Brooklyn Bridge

Probably the most famous Bridge in the world, and also one of the most unique for sure! It’s definitely a touristy attraction overflowing with visitors, locals bike riding their way across the bridge for work, local merchants selling small gifts…it’s a real confusion, hahaha! But, crossing the Brooklyn Bridge always gives me some of the most amazing feelings and you’re really able to experience New York City’s energy.

#12 Flatiron Building

Another great spot for photographers and visitors is the Flatiron Building. Its architecture is amazing, and it has a big history. Built in 1902, this magnificent building is located between 5th Avenue and Broadway. The neighborhood has become very popular and the pedestrian paths in front of the building as well as the nearby Madison Square Park are ideal scenery for photos.

#13 Brooklyn Wall Art

Graffiti is a huge deal in New York and has been relatively European, but not anymore. Lots of areas of Brooklyn have artistic walls, which make for great photography. Williamsburg, for example, has plenty of vivid graffiti murals that are unique and signed by famous names like Eduardo Kobra, or just Kobra! It’s time to discover the real New York. If you have time, go get lost in Bushwick (only a few subway stops from Williamsburg, also in Brooklyn), also known for The Bushwick Collective with its graffiti and street arts.

#14 Greenwich Village

One of the most beautiful places, the Greenwich Village, is known for its beautiful buildings, its red bricks or brownstones, and the different shades of green that exist in every corner of the area. Also, it boasts plenty of peace and quiet from the bustling city. The area is known for being a historic place in the fight for the LGBTQ+ rights and where the famous Stonewall Riot happened in 1969, kickstarting this movement.

#15 Liberty Island

Now this is surely a photographer’s dream location (but not a paradise for locals running away from the flocking tourists. Liberty Island is a small, uninhabited island, which hosts our beautiful and powerful Lady Liberty (aka Statue of Liberty).

The statue is 93 meters high and the seven rays of the crown represent the seven seas and seven continents. It takes about an hour to see it all and to take all the photos you’ll want – a bit longer if you really want to capture the hum of the city.

The view of Manhattan’s skyline, from the island, is unique and truly unforgettable – it’s a must for any new tourist to the city. If you do not want to get off the ferry boat, you might want to take the Staten Island Ferry that is a free option and you can see the Statue. Unless…you want to go inside the statue where it costs around $18.

It’s the true heart of NYC and a place that you will always remember visiting. The city itself is home to so much beauty so it’s always best to get around walking and exploring all neighborhoods. Leave the Ubers for nighttime when you decide to slip into those heals (or pretty shoes)!

I’m sure that after seeing our post “New York City Before And After The Coronavirus [Part 1/2]“, you got curious to continue exploring NYC streets during this unique time in history, right? Or am I wrong?

Well, like we mentioned, photographers have been doing a fantastic job reporting different corners of the city. Now, as most of us know, the city’s reopening will be done in phases, and slowly the city will awake.

Until then, let’s take a look at a few more extraordinary shot with scenes of New York we’d never imagine even in our craziest dreams.

St. Patricks Cathedral

One of the most famous Cathedrals in the world is nestled right in the heart of Manhattan, on 5th Avenue! St. Patricks Cathedral is a neo-gothic Catholic cathedral dating back to 1879.

“The story of New York’s great cathedral mirrors the story of the city itself. Created to affirm the ascendance of religious freedom and tolerance, St. Patrick’s Cathedral was built in the democratic spirit, paid for not only by the contributions of thousands of poor immigrants but also by the largesse of 103 prominent citizens who pledged $1,000 each.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral proves the maxim that no generation builds a cathedral. It is rather, a kind of ongoing conversation linking generations past, present and future.” ~ St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Rockefeller Center

Maybe one of the first places people ask to visit when they come to New York City, is the Rockefeller Center. In our opinion the Top of the Rock has the best observatory in the city. Why? Well, you’ll have a 360º view where you can spot the Statue of Liberty looking South, as well as gaze at the see of trees at Central Park, to the North. And, of course, you can see New Jersey on one side and Brooklyn / Queens on the other.

Also, the Rockefeller Center is the home of New York’s famous Christmas Tree that people anxiously wait for every year! It’s truly a beauty and kicks off the holiday season in style, once the tree is lit up!

Radio City Music Hall

Completed and open to the public in December 27th, 1932, Radio City Music Hall is an important piece in New York’s entertainment history.

“More than 300 million people have come to the Music Hall to enjoy stage shows, movies, concerts and special events. There’s no place like it to see a show or stage a show. Everything about it is larger than life. Radio City Music Hall is the largest indoor theatre in the world.

The popular movie-and-stage-show format remained a Radio City signature until 1979, when the mass showcasing of new films called for a new focus. Today, the Music Hall still premieres selected films, but is best known as the country’s leading hall for popular concerts, stage shows, special attractions and media events.” ~ MSG

5th Avenue

Did you know that 5th Avenue starts at the North end of Washington Square Park and stretches all the way up to West 143rd Street, in Harlem? It’s quite a stretch, right?

But, many people crave the walk up and down 5th Avenue starting at 59th Street, where The Plaza Hotel and the iconic Apple’s Fifth Avenue “Cube” store are located – and heading South!

The biggest retailers in the world from the top luxury brands like Harry Winston, Bulgari and Valentino, to more accessible fashion brands like Gap, Nike and Uniqlo are spread throughout the blocks. Now, the streets are as silent as you can imagine.

East Village

The East Village is certainly one of our favorite neighborhood in Manhattan. It’s the home of countless fantastic local businesses, while still not attracting a huge touristy crowd. Good for us! While tourists are crazy exploring and fighting their way through Times Square and Midtown, the more niche tourists are uncovering the beauties of this neighborhood.

It’s also the home of some pretty amazing graffiti works, like this one called Black or White (featuring Michael Jackson) – on 180 1st Avenue. The artist is the world-known Brazilian artist, Kobra. New York currently has a total of 19 murals by Kobra spread throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Bryant Park

New York City has so many amazing, and well cared for parks, but Bryant Park has something special. It’s located between West 40th and West 42nd Streets, and 6th and 5th Avenue.

Even though it’s literally steps from Times Square, it has a totally different vibe. It’s also the home of one of our favorite “getaways” in the City: the New York Public Library. We do tend to go a lot there and just chill for a few hours in The Rose Main Reading Room.

During the warmer months, the park hosts open air movie sessions on their lawn, and in the winter, they have a skiing rink with great vendors in their Holiday Shops, selling winter apparel and delicious hot chocolates.

DUMBO

Many people don’t know that DUMBO is actually short for: Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. It’s on the very tip of Brooklyn, right on the East River.

This area has immensely grown not only with businesses like Burrow and Foragers City Grocer, but with new high-end residential renovated apartments and modern office spaces. Yes, rent there is crazy expensive and a 1-bedroom can cost over $4,000/month in rent. Only in New York City, right?

In addition, one our favorite hotels, the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, is just “around the corner”.

This view you see in the picture above is one of the most sought-after corners that not only tourists, but influencers and photographers come to shoot. It’s the intersection of Washington Street and Water Street, in case you’re curious.

New York is a strong city, and New Yorkers are one of the most resilient people on this Earth.

That said, we know that we’re passing through really, really tough times. The world is changing, we are surely changing and we CAN’T go back to normal….after all the normal was not working!

Together, we are stronger and we will get out of this with more clarity and hopefully the whole of humanity will come out of this with more compassion, empathy and love for each other!

In times of Corona, it has become more important than ever to get together and help those in need. From friends, families and people around us, to the numerous small businesses that are struggling to keep the ball rolling.

So, with that in mind, Kirby Duncan, founder of KD & W Creative LLC started this amazing initiative.

This Saturday, May 23^rd, from 10am – 1pm ONLINE, the BK Block Party will showcase Brooklyn’s first-ever digital live shopping event with some of the neighborhood’s favorite small local shops, restaurants, ice cream shops, chocolate and coffee shops, bookstores, liquors stores, independent designers, and community organizations.

You’ll be able to pop in and out of your favorite shops & restaurants to say hello and shop exclusive sales, menu items, and more to help the shops that make Brooklyn so great!

Plus, you can expect seeing and learning the craft with artists, listen to great DJs, meet drag queens, and more.

Now, a little about the great line up!

Some of the local shops are Kahkow, Odd Fellows Ice Cream, King’s County Distillery, I Made That Bag, the restaurants Sunday in Brooklyn and Lemon & Olives and still, Maha Rose Healing Center, the artist Dan DiFerndinando and other surprises!

The mission at FEED is simple: “We create good products that help feed children around the world.”

With the start of every new day, we see people questioning everything that’s going on, from climate change and natural disasters, to the undeniable help that underprivileged communities need.

“It’s hard to believe that hunger is a daily reality for 795 million people around the world—limiting human flourishing, health and potential in far too many communities. The most vulnerable are often children, whose mental and physical growth, and ultimately potential to create a better future, is dependent on this most basic human need.”

It seems that world we once knew is now becoming a difficult place to live, but what gives us hope are the thousands of people spread across the planet spreading the good!

New York is one of the busiest cities in the world, but even so, we have special people working to improve the lives of others

FEED is a project idealized and led by Lauren Bush, niece of ex-President George W. Bush and Ellen Gustafson, who started her career working with Communication at the United Nations (UN).

Lauren was a model for Tommy Hilfiger for two years in her yearly years in college, but shortly after that she became a spokesperson for the UN World Food Program (WFP). This was the trigger for changing her career and her view on the world

After her first trip, where she faced the harsh reality of children on the verge of death in Guatemala, Lauren decided to do more than just be a “spokesperson”.

It was there that she joined Ellen, who was also looking to do something bigger.

Lauren’s passion for fashion and design and Ellen’s desire to do something different had finally merged. The project is simple: a reusable bag, only with the project’s logo, where all income collected is directed directly to the UN World Food Program.

In a short time, the logistics and procedures for the United Nations to sell this bag became so complex and bureaucratic that Lauren and Ellen decided to leave the WFP.

Voilá! FEED Projects was founded!

FEED Projects currently works with numerous organizations such as WFP, of course, and others like UNICEF. Sales are mostly made online, where you will see how your purchase will help these children.

You can literally buy a $60 scholarship and feed a child for an entire year! How incredible is that, right!?

In addition, FEED Shop & Café is their first physical location in New York, located inside the majestic Empire Stores in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

“The shop features an assortment of our newest products, special in-store exclusives and a rotating curation of other socially conscious finds. Our cafe serves the FEED Heritage coffee blend, roasted in partnership with La Colombe, and a delicious selection of pastries and nibbles.”

Most of the bags are made in China, but the most expensive leather items are produced by hand in Kenya and Guatemala.

The models are as diverse as backpacks, classic totes and some duffle bags. And yet, the girls made a line called “Feed NYC” in 2010, with more elaborate bags made by the local clothing industry (of course, to incentivize the local economy) and were sold at Bergdorf Goodman. Oh! Shop the new FEED arrivals!

The project has grown so much that now several brands have become FEED partners. Companies like: Target, Disney, Pottery Barn, Clarins, Whole Foods Market, Gap, Tory Burch, Rachel Roy, DKNY, Links of London, Godiva, TOMS and Nordstrom are part of it.

Today, in neighborhoods across the United States, there are over 40 million people who aren’t sure where they will find their next meal. By hosting a FEED Supper, you will join a community helping to change that.
Host a dinner party that provides meals for more than just your friends
Your FEED Supper can be as simple as a pizza party or as formal as a seated dinner. Just ask your guests to make a donation to help fight hunger in advance of the gathering. It’s that simple.

If you’ve walked attentively through New York, you’ve probably crossed paths with Louis Mendes, one of the most renowned NYC street photographer. I have a cool story to tell you about the day I wrote about him for the first time.

A little over 5 years ago, when I started Behind the Scenes NYC (BTSNYC) from my room, in my mom’s house in São Paulo, Brazil my idea (which still remains strong!) was to write about and help spread the love for small, independently owned businesses around New York that have some of the best products and services, far away from the touristy scene!

I also wanted to share the story of New Yorkers that have been leaving their mark around town!

My love for New York has always been something inexplicable that I myself can’t really describe.

Hence my decision of leaving a great job, a 3 year long relationship, my home and move to New York City alone, unemployed but super happy to start a new phase!

Before moving I worked 1 year on BTSNYC from (shocker!!!!) my room in Brazil late hours at night, that was the only time I had free.

With, of course, the help of a bunch on NY-based friends that were my “eyes” – until I was actually able to move!

The Queens-born, Harlem-based photographer, Louis Mendes always called my attention not only because of his flawless style and amazingly cool vintage camera. But, because of his passion to register people in public places and freeze a special moment in time!

I NEVER ask to take pictures with famous people, and New Yorkers know what I’m talking about, hahaha, but I really could not NOT take a picture with him, 5 years after writing about him on my Instagram, when I was still in Brazil!

Louis, it was SO NICE to officially meet you!! Such an honor and I love your work!

And, thank you Bruce Byers, another fantastic photographer, for taking the shot!! It was great to meet you and I’m looking forward to see more of your work!

If you guys are ever in New York, be sure to keep your eyes open! Maybe, you’ll be lucky enough to cross paths with Louis Mendes!

Fê is our Founder & CEO! She’s Brazilian (Yup! Not a New Yorker!), but her indescribable passion and curiosity for NY makes her a New Yorker by heart. Fê worked in companies like Kimberly Clark, Quintessentially, Vogue Brazil and Iguatemi Group, and after 12 years of working for these fantastic companies, she decided to go solo and move to NYC!

DUMBO is a great neighborhood to explore after you’ve walked over the Brooklyn Bridge! Burrow, a French pastry shop in DUMBO with Japanese influences owned by Ayako Kurokawa, is a delicious place to recharge.

Located on Jay Street inside the lobby of an old standard industrial looking building, is Burrow. I almost completely missed it on my first visit down there.

DUMBO is a fantastic and super cool neighborhood to explore and even stay, if you’re in NYC for a few days.

Komeeda hosted a delicious dinner at a surprise breathtaking location in Brooklyn with a priceless view of the Manhattan skyline! It was literally, a dinner under the bridge.

One of the highlights, even though there obviously were many through out the night, was seeing the sun set behind Manhattan.

Sarah Owen, a Trend Forecaster and Editor at WGSN, did an Instagram take-over with us. She talked about 6 spots in New York that she loves going to!
