The neighborhood of Astoria is a great place to venture out and explore. We always say we get crazy when people visit New York and get stuck inside Manhattan. There’s a world to explore out of the island!

The Museum of Moving Image explains what they do:

“The Museum advances the understanding, enjoyment, and appreciation of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media by presenting exhibitions, education programs, significant moving-image works, interpretive programs, collecting and preserving moving-image related artifacts.

They have amazing exhibitions during the year! You can expect over 400 movie screenings, public discussions with creative professionals and their core exhibition with a behind the scenes view of the creative process involved in the piece.

Also, the changing exhibitions presents installations, videos, live events, educational programs, an amazing collection of artifacts related to the art, history, and technology.

Lastly, they have online projects presenting groundbreaking exhibitions.

The museum was fortunate to pass through a massive expansion in early 2011. It literally doubled it’s size and became even more beautiful.

We always have reading reaching out asking what they should do with small kids and teens.

Well, this is a fantastic option if you want to entertain them! Plus, you can explore a little bit of Queens, while there!

You’re actually not that far into Queens, so on your way back, you can pass through the famous MoMA PS1. If you are over 21, you can attend their PS1 Sunday Session parties, that happens only during the summer.

If you need help to book a tour or any detail of your visit to New York, be sure to let our experts help you out!

Hours:

Friday: 10:30am – 8pm

One of the main reasons we started Behind the Scenes NYC was to work with the local community, making a difference and helping those that need our support.

We met a great group of people from Be The Match at an event in the city last year. Immediately, we signed up and joined their program by filling out a form. Plus, they got a “saliva sample” so we could become donors – totally painless.

They explain:

“For thousands of patients with a blood cancer like leukemia or other blood disease like sickle cell anemia, a marrow or umbilical cord transplant is their only life-saving treatment – their only chance for a cure. Yet, most have no matching marrow donor in their family.”

So, if you are between the age of 18 and 44, these folks need you!

Moms and future moms, did you know that your baby’s umbilical cord can save lives too!?

Here are a few ways to engage and be part of this amazing work:

  1. Donate: Different from what people thing, the 2 methods of donation are painless. PBSC donation is a nonsurgical procedure and the most common way to donate. Bone marrow donation is a surgical, usually outpatient procedure. Regardless, both are safe and painless.
  2. Donate Money: Yes, they do rely on financial contributions to continue researches. In addition, they help patients with transplant costs and other needs.
  3. Volunteer, attend an event or put together a fundraising: Yes, there are other countless ways to support and participate. You’ll surely find the one that suits you the most.

Their Volunteer Programs is great for anyone interested in donating time – one of our most precious assets today!

Furthermore, if you want to actually see the impact they have today, you can read heart-warming stories. From patients and donors to stories behind patients & donors actually meeting, after a successful transplant!

Let’s help make a difference in this world that seams to have become as it’s crazy as it can get!

The New Victory Theater has amazing shows and is practically one of the only theaters in town with a good selection for kids! The good thing is that the shows are made for adults as well, making the night-out very fun to go with the family.

There, they create a delicious world of fantasy to entertain children and present plays, musicals, circus shows… All super playful and fun!

I always look for some cultural programs to go with my kids, since New York City is one of the largest cultural and entertainment centers in the world!

The last great tip is one of my favorite restaurants in town!

A perfect thing to do with kids is to take them to a pizza spot! Number 28 is not a preppy place, but I think that’s why it’s so cool!

Today, they have 4 addresses in New York and 2 in Brooklyn. They serve one of the best pizzas in town, considered by many to be the “authentic Neapolitan pizza!”

The ingredients are the best: super fresh, natural, no preservatives and some are even gluten-free. If you are not with that desire to eat pizza, as the kids probably are, they offer a great menu with pasta, salads and meat!

But…I suggest trying their pizza! Lastly, the environment is quite relaxed and the pizza, delicious!”

What Lies Beyond Our Cosmic Horizon? Visit Dark Universe!

Music & Culture Museum of Natural History Hayden Planetarium

The new Hayden Planetarium Space show, “Dark Universe”, starts 100 million light years away from Earth. Come on this journey with us!

Music & Culture Museum of Natural History Hayden Planetarium

Practically everyone has heard about the American Museum of National History, specially after that blockbuster movie called A Night at the Museum, featuring Ben Stiller. That not a novelty at all, crowded with tourists, but it’s surely a to-go place. You won’t be able to escape that.

But, what many people don’t remember is that the Hayden Planetarium is there too! And come on, who doesn’t love a planetarium experience, right? Kids, adults, elderly ones…we all love it!

Dark Universe” is a fantastic travel into the Universe, where you will learn and discover more about its history, structure and even what is our part in it all. Plus, you’ll see what new studies are discovering and countless mysteries still to be uncovered.

And still, you’ll understand more about Edwin Hubble’s fantastic discoveries and fly back to the Big Bang! Imagine getting a glimpse of how IT all started?! Oh man, really, this is just so cool!

So, be prepared to see: stunningly detailed scenes based on authentic scientific data—including a NASA probe’s breathtaking plunge into Jupiter’s atmosphere and novel visualizations of unobservable dark matter. Dark Universe explores this new age of cosmic discovery and reveals the mysteries that have been brought to light so far.”

Below, Mordecai-Mark Mac Low, curator in the Department of Astrophysics, explains:

“Many people don’t know that the museum is also a major research institute. Included in our Astrophysics research program is work directly related to the topic of show – taking data from the Hubble telescope and using it to identify a distant supernovae and from that to help measure the properties of dark energy. This space show is not just about what the Universe is, but how we measure.”

We are sure you’ll have a fantastic and enlightening time there, so enjoy!

If you get hungry, you can go to the Mediterranean restaurant, Hummus Place just a few blocks away. For the vegans, Peacefood it also a quick walk from the museum.

But, if you’re still in the mood for more history, head down to Chelsea to The Rubin Museum to explore a bit about  Himalayas, India and the Tibetan arts.

Hours:
Monday – Friday: Every half hour, 10:30am – 4pm | except on Wednesdays, when first show begins at 11am
Saturday – Sunday: Every half hour, 10:30am – 5pm

To start, Bonpoint isn’t exactly a “behind the scenes” brand, but it’s surely worth the attention!

People tend to say that it’s very hard to raise kids in New York City and that you’d have to be crazy to even consider such a thing.

Well, we strongly disagree with this statement. Actually, we believe that kids that are raised in NYC tend to become strong and successful human beings. Being raised in this multicultural, dynamic and empowering city can only mostly bring benefits. But, then again, it’s our point of view.

Plus, our Founder, Fê Paronetto, is totally in love with the city. Not only does she believe in the benefits stated above, but she also has very close friends in NYC that are raising their kids here. Result? They are having the best time ever!

Shopping for kids can be a challenge, specially because they grow up so quickly. There are numerous fast fashion brands that are perfect to buy more daily clothes and underwear. On the other hand, you also need to have in mind which are the brands that you can find, in case you have a special event or occasion. These do have higher price ranges, but worth every dollar.

Founded in 1975, in the heart of Paris, Bonpoint is one of these high-end kid’s fashion brands. In other words, they are a couture fashion brand for the little ones!

The brand has now extended their reach to countless cities across the globe, with over 110 stores.

They offer a fantastic range of the cutest clothes and accessories for newborns, babies, girls and boys! With 3 addresses in New York City, they also sell shoes, perfume and skincare products.

Not to mention that their campaigns are the cutest thing ever!

A little bit more about the brand:

“Rich in the savoir-faire of a couture house, thanks to its artisan studios in Paris, Bonpoint cultivates the precision of beauty, the passion for quality and a meticulous attention to detail and finishing.

Bonpoint is the French fashion house for children. A unique destination with its spot-on style, poetic universe tinged with humour and magic, inspired window displays and the warm atmosphere of its boutiques and flagship stores in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris and on Madison Avenue in New York.

Every season the house’s artistic director, Christine Innamorato, invents an enchanting and creative collection for Bonpoint, from newborn to teenagers and YAM – for those young women who are still Bonpoint girls at heart.”

So, if you’re looking for that special dress for the girls, or a mini suit and cardigan for the boys, this house of French couture for kids is the place to go!

Your baby will most surely be the best dressed kid in the party and the most stylish one too!

I mean, who in the world doesn’t enjoy handcrafted ice cream? If this person exists, be careful with them! Ha! Just joking… But, we do know that New Yorkers are pretty fond of ice creams, since the ice cream shops are always overflowing with people, even in the winter.

In the beginning, they had a hunch that people out there would line up in huge lines to get a taste of their artisanal ice creams. They started out as a small little brand wanting to show the world their expertise. And, grew to become a brand that people not only lined up for their ice cream, but outbraved themselves in the middle of snow storms to guarantee their scoop!

Besides the traditional flavors, they also offer amazing non-dairy ice creams and sorbets.

With the years, and the renowned name they’ve got today, they explained that a few (not many), things changed.

“We still use “mix-ins” but now they’re a little more grown-up, with fresh, natural ingredients, and to create our signature flavors, we work directly with some of the most innovative and inspired artisans around. It took a while, but small-batch has finally gone big time. And that’s pretty sweet.”

They have some pretty interesting flavors like Pretzels, Honey Pistachio, Pies & Sweet Cream, Mexican Chili Chocolate, Southern Banana Pudding, Speculoos Cookie Butter and so many others!

Today, they are literally spread throughout the US. In NY, you can find them in several different markets in all the Boroughs – except Staten Island.

So, it shouldn’t be hard try some! I want some handcrafted ice cream!
