So, Can You Afford to Move to NYC?

Curiosities City Secrets Can You Afford to Move to NYC Kat Maryschuk

Many people dream of packing up their life, getting out of that one-horse town, and starting anew in New York City, and why wouldn’t they? But, can you afford to move to NYC?!

As the cultural capital of the world, New York has something for everybody, but the question is: Can you afford to move to NYC?

Like any big city, you need to be able to afford it, and while you’ve romanticized boho dreams of the struggling artist, there is nothing glamorous about struggling to make ends meet.

Our founder, Fernanda, did THE move almost 6 years ago and has quite an exciting story to share!

Before making your move to the Big Apple, here’s what you need to know.

Fix Your Finances

Fixing your finances is vital before you make any significant move. So, it’s not wise to make your move while still partying off debts, especially considering how expensive New York can be.

There are solutions to help you, though.

For example, the Debt to Success System is completely legitimate, and it can assist in fixing your finances and providing crucial debt relief to make you more confident before making your move.

Another idea is to start putting together a thorough spreadsheet where you can start listing all your future expenses to understand what your monthly cost would be. With that number in mind, it will be easier to start planning.

Know The Neighborhood

There are plenty of neighborhoods across New York. Some of them are hip and fun, whereas others have seen better days. This might be something that appeals to you, so it’s worth knowing where you want to live, and whether that’s even possible.

For families, Metropolitan New York is the best place to go, but if you want to be close to culture and the financial hub, there is nowhere more suitable than Manhattan.

However, you could also consider Brooklyn and Queens, while Staten Island and the Bronx are enjoying something of a regeneration, with plenty of low-income housing available to help mitigate the initial costs.

Finding a Job

There are plenty of jobs in New York, but this could depend on what you’re looking for.

Many people come to New York to live their dream. They want to get into TV, or they want to take Broadway by storm. While there’s nothing wrong with having these dreams, the competition can be fierce and brutal.

Don’t expect to be able to waltz in and have your pick of the jobs available unless you have arranged beforehand, whether you’re a US citizen or someone coming in on a working visa.

There are ways to supplement your income in the interim, with hospitality opportunities in abundance. Well,  it’s actually something to keep your eyes on and follow the post Covid scenario.

Making Concessions

As of last year, the average rent for a two-bed apartment in the city is $2,499, while studio and one-bedroom places are $1,889 and $2,098 for the month. This means, if you want to afford to live in NYC, you’ll need to make several concessions.

Apartment sharing is popular (and necessary), while you may also have to give up luxuries.

Some of these luxuries won’t matter, such as your car because of the wealth of transport options, but you may also need to give Netflix a miss too, at least until you find your footing.

The City So Nice

There are uncountable reasons why so many people flock to New York City every year with dreams of making it big or even experiencing one of the most exciting places in the world.

The city can be as expensive as you make it, but you’ll still need to have a decent backup of funds before you arrive.

So, start planning yourself and don’t forget to count on unexpected expenses…they always show up in New York City! Plan, plan and plan!

How Behind The Scenes NYC Started, On Glamour Brazil

About BTSNYC What The Press Says Glamour Brasil

Once again our Founder, Fernanda Paronetto, shared her story about how she decided to leave her “perfect” life in Brazil and move to New York City at 32 years old. She shared how Behind the Scenes NYC started, on Glamour Brazil.

About BTSNYC What The Press Says Glamour Brasil

This time our Founder, Fernanda, shared her story and how Behind the Scenes NYC started, on Glamour Brazil’s online magazine for her Brazilian audience.

If you’re a Portuguese speaker, take a look at the original link to read the full article, written in first person.

A little snippet in English:

Since my teenager years, I always wanted to live in New York. My idea was to move as soon as I graduated from college. But … a decade passed and, when I noticed, I was 30 years old and still living in Brazil.

What happened in those 10 years that I didn’t go to NY?

To be honest, I had only tried once to make this big change. I tried everything. I talked to everyone I knew, asked for contact recommendations, researched courses and MBAs I could apply to, spent hours on LinkedIn…

The first (and unsuccessful) attempt

Everything seemed to be evolving according to plan, but in a short time, all contacts were dissolving, I lost the timing of signing up for the courses, the Skype interviews did not progress … Nothing was working out.

Over the years, I realized that there was a bigger reason why I couldn’t move. It’s a very long story, but, yes, I believe in Karma, faith, the Universe, energy, etc. – and no, I’m not religious at all.

Today I see that everything happened in the most perfect way and that, if I had moved to NY at that time, I would not be 1/10 of the person I am today.

Obviously, I was only able to see the beauty of this failed attempt much later. And you know what? It was spectacular.

Louis Mendes: Renowned NYC Street Photographer

City Secrets Louis Mendes NYC Street Photographer Fernanda Paronetto Thumnbnail

If you’ve walked attentively through New York, you’ve probably crossed paths with Louis Mendes, one of the most renowned NYC street photographer. I have a cool story to tell you about the day I wrote about him for the first time.

A little over 5 years ago, when I started Behind the Scenes NYC (BTSNYC) from my room, in my mom’s house in São Paulo, Brazil my idea (which still remains strong!) was to write about and help spread the love for small, independently owned businesses around New York that have some of the best products and services, far away from the touristy scene!

I also wanted to share the story of New Yorkers that have been leaving their mark around town!

My love for New York has always been something inexplicable that I myself can’t really describe.

Hence my decision of leaving a great job, a 3 year long relationship, my home and move to New York City alone, unemployed but super happy to start a new phase!

Before moving I worked 1 year on BTSNYC from (shocker!!!!) my room in Brazil late hours at night, that was the only time I had free.

With, of course, the help of a bunch on NY-based friends that were my “eyes” – until I was actually able to move!

The Queens-born, Harlem-based photographer, Louis Mendes always called my attention not only because of his flawless style and amazingly cool vintage camera. But, because of his passion to register people in public places and freeze a special moment in time!

I NEVER ask to take pictures with famous people, and New Yorkers know what I’m talking about, hahaha, but I really could not NOT take a picture with him, 5 years after writing about him on my Instagram, when I was still in Brazil!

Louis, it was SO NICE to officially meet you!! Such an honor and I love your work!

And, thank you Bruce Byers, another fantastic photographer, for taking the shot!! It was great to meet you and I’m looking forward to see more of your work!

If you guys are ever in New York, be sure to keep your eyes open! Maybe, you’ll be lucky enough to cross paths with Louis Mendes!

62.8 million tourists visited New York City in 2017, marking the eighth consecutive year of record-breaking growth. But what’s a tourist to do after they’ve hit the major spots? Or if they want to avoid the major attractions in the first place? And where should a local start if they want to explore beyond their go-to’s? That’s where Behind the Scenes NYC comes in.

Ironically, the website cataloguing the city’s hidden gems was founded nearly 5,000 miles away in founder Fernanda Paronetto’s bedroom in São Paulo, Brazil. Fernanda – who goes by Fê – has a penchant for exploration and a knack for finding the best local spots, which she exercised during a trip to New York with her sister in 2014.

“What are we going to do this time?”

That question turned into an Instagram account where she posted about the places she’d discovered on that trip, which would later become @behindthescenesnyc. A couple weeks later, she got a message from a born and bred New Yorker thanking her for the local tip. From there, Fê knew she was on to something.

What started as a passion project fueled by a deep love of New York became a business. She enlisted the help of friends living in the city to scout new locations, finding places that looked promising. They’d stop by in person, report back to her, and she would curate and post from overseas.

It wasn’t long before Fê made the transition to the city herself.

Recently, I read an inspiring story about Fernanda Paronetto and her struggle to get an American visa and live in New York City for good. Her passions to live in the city and chase your dreams are something we all think about, but only a few individuals dare to achieve it.

Keeping that in mind, Behind the Scene NYC (BTSNYC) is a website providing professional concierge services to the locals and visitors to have a remarkable experience. Fernanda Paronetto is the founder of Behind The Scenes NYC, an independent online publication and boutique concierge service firm focused on helping people discover New York City like locals.

Before Paronetto spent her days sharing the coolest off-the-beaten-path spots in NY, she built her career experience in Brazil.

But she always dreamed of living in the city that never sleeps, and she always knew she would make it happen — she just didn’t know how.

In this essay, Paronetto walks us through what it took to go from 20-year-old student to successful entrepreneur — despite going through health issues and immigration struggles in the process.

Let her journey inspire you to hustle and grow.

Early career and mindset

I’ve always been a very resilient person, with a lot of perseverance to reach my personal and professional goals, and a few big dreams to check off my bucket list.

Plus, I never really took into consideration what other people said that I could or could not do. After going through my teenage years, and entering adulthood, I truly didn’t give a damn.

I started my career asking my dad for a job at his company during my studies. But little did I know at 20 years old that working with your dad can be harder than working at any other job!

After a while working for my dad, I decided to leave and work for another company in the same import and export field.

Nine months later, I understood that my dad wasn’t the problem, but the industry as a whole didn’t interest me that much.

From there, I started focusing on marketing positions.

Even though working in marketing had always been what I wanted to do, I went to business school. I thought it would give me a much better background in terms of being good with numbers. (It did in fact end up helping me throughout my career.)

Back in college, I told everyone that after graduation I would move to New York City.

I always explain that I just had (and still have) this indescribable passion and curiosity for New York and all that it means.

I just HAD to live there.
