The Rock’n’Roll Saint Vitus Bar in Greenpoint for Nirvana fans

Nightlife Bars Saint Vitus Nirvana Show

We are all about a neighborhood at the very tip of Brooklyn, called Greenpoint. So many new venues are constantly opening and attracting some of the trendiest people in the New York. Saint Vitus is one of the places you have to know about.

Nightlife Bars Saint Vitus Nirvana Show
Nirvana performs at Saint Vitus Bar.

Greenpoint is a neighborhood in expansion. Some of the coolest ‘kids’ in New York live there and others are venturing into starting their own businesses. All locally made, which we love!

You can find everything from restaurants, bars, coffeeshop and famous donut bakeries, to hidden art galleries, apothecaries and even, a true rock bar!

The rock’n’roll Saint Vitus Bar is the first and only gothic-themed bar in the neighborhood. With dim lighting, they attract the metalheads and rock fans.

“FEARFUL naïfs may assume that heavy-metal bars are cradles of malevolence where depraved longhairs slake their thirst with bats’ blood. But Saint Vitus, a gothic-themed bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, named after a Black Sabbath song, is actually a welcoming spot for downing cheap beers and listening to Pantera.”

After playing at the “Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame” on a Thursday night, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear (a.k.a. Nirvana), headed to Saint Vitus.

There they played an amazing full set of Nirvana Classics for the lucky crowd that was there that night!

The complete list of upcoming shows are online, so be sure to see what will be on during the night you plan on going.

As one of the owners once said: “It doesn’t have to be about metal, it’s a fun vibe.

If you want to explore the neighborhood, but have absolutely no idea where to start, let us help! Download our Self-Guided Tour of Greenpoint and explore the neighborhood with your friends. Here is a teaser of one of the places on the guide: Milk & Roses restaurant, one of our favorites!

More about the Jazz Age Lawn Party:

“The Jazz Age Lawn Party, now in its 11th year, is New York City’s original prohibition era inspired gathering. Hosted and conceived by Michael Arenella in 2015, the event started as a small gathering of fifty friends.
They came together on Governors Island to revel in the music of the Jazz Age, as performed by Michael Arenella and His Dreamland.

The event is carefully crafted and nurtured, growing into one of New York City’s most beloved summer events. This historically sold out event attracts 20,000 fans over two weekends. Guests come together to discover music and zeitgeist of the 1920s and 1930s. Plus, they learn the hottest dance steps of the time, frolic in their flapper dresses and glad rags. Plus, they enjoy sophisticated bites and vintage-inspired cocktails in a romantic, playful setting.

The event is consistently selected by the New York Times as one of “New York’s most memorable events”. The party offers a unique, interactive experiences.”

Marie’s Crisis Cafe: Feeling Inside A New York Musical

Nightlife Bars Marie's Crisis Cafe Façade

Marie’s Crisis Cafe is the place to be if you want to experience a different type of scene in New York City!

Nightlife Bars Marie's Crisis Cafe Façade

Have you ever wanted just just walk into a bar and sing as loud as your lungs can handle? Now, imagine doing that at a cool neighborhood bar in New York, where many other talent voices can sing along!

Located in the West Village, in Manhattan, Marie’s Crisis Cafe attracts a bit of everything. From locals, to artists and the coolest gay crowd, you’ll definitely have a great and interesting time there!

“If you like how people in musicals can go without warning from normal conversation to singing their hearts out, this is the West Village bar for you.

One minute, the barmaid is pulling you a pint of Bass, the next she’s belting out “Me and Bobby McGee.”

At 5:30pm, groups of friends and random folks start gathering around the piano in the basement level. It’s quite an experience.

We have to emphasize that people there are usually Broadway lovers and know all the shows and lyrics!

In general, drinks are cheep, décor has a nostalgic early 1900’s vibe and guests are all pretty “random”. You’ll find young ones, gays, straight, everything in between and older people. But, that isn’t the point! The thing is, they all have one thing in common: they all love musicals!

It’s not a place you need to worry about how you look today. So be free to be yourself, have fun, appreciate everyone around you and…let go!

Do observe the sign that says it’s prohibited to film or take pictures of presentations. This is a place to have fun and enjoy, not to be behind a camera capturing everything. Besides, they do appreciate the privacy of not sharing what happens there. Not everyone likes to be broadcasted on social, right?

Be polite and respectful while there!

Oh! They are a cash only bar, so do be sure to have cash on you!

And believe it or not, Marie’s Crisis Cafe has no mirror or soap in the bathroom, so go prepared or bring your own. No, this is not a joke.

The West Village is one of our favorite neighborhoods in the city, so explore it with love!

Try Wilfie & Nell as another bar option. For food, you can go to the super trendy Via Carota and Buvette restaurants. For sushi, the famous Sushi Nakazawa is fantastic.

For one of the top minimalistic Brazilian fashion brands, go to Uma.

And last, go to Sofar Sounds to see what secret music gig they are hosting in the neighborhood. It’s a fantastic plan for a laid back, bring your own bottle night where upcoming artists singing to a small, private group!

The Creative Young Brazilian Community In NYC

Culture & Music Alessio Romano Michel Nasrallah

We contributed during 1 year for Glamour Brazil. This post was about the creative young Brazilian community in NYC.

See the original Portuguese version and below, the English version:

New York is known for many things. The food, the corporate madness, the great Broadway and Off Broadway shows, the incredible fashion world and uncontrollable consumption of tourists and New Yorkers.

The beauty of Central Park and the fantastic art world are unquestionable. Lastly, it’s also know an “incubator” for new, upcoming talents.

We share with you the story of some young folks that are making a difference here. Others are just starting out their promising career and they sure have an incredible work worth following.

Culture & Music Max Poglia Working

Max Poglia

The Brazilian with clear Italian descent (beginning by his name), Maximiliano Poglia, also known as Max, is a designer and lives in New York since 2009. Max has worked with the renowned and always crowded restaurant Buvette, that we love.

He has created a line of exclusive products for the Bedford Post – a charming hotel in Bedford – part of the Relais & Chateaux group. And, has collaborated with various New York brands like TheBKCircus, a man’s fashion brand.

Today he has launched his own product collection with stylish leather handbags. His handmade knives that are not made of stainless steel purposely to allow the product to age. Plus, the soft unique fleece blankets have no artificial coloring and beautiful leather details.

You can find his products at stores like 3×1 in Soho, Modern Anthology in Dumbo, the Gentry in Williamsburg, the Warm in Nolita, The Space NYC, in Bushwick and a few other places around town!

Culture & Music The Brazilian Johnsons Sitting

The Brazilian Johnsons

Berklee College of Music College, in Boston, is known for having huge music alumni stars like Diana Krall, Quincy Jones, John Mayer, Esperanza Spalding, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford (both from Aerosmith), among many others!

A band named The Brazilian Johnsons was created by five Brazilians who studied together at Berklee and now live in Brooklyn, obviously. Michel Nasrallah, the vocalist and guitarist, André Vasconcelos rocks on the guitar, Bruno Esrubilsky hits the drums, Apoena Frota plays the bass and João Nogueira on the keyboard. All fantastic musicians!

Michel tells us that their – classic rock’n’roll – was inspired by bands like Rolling Stones, Beatles, Queen, Led Zepplin, Cold Chisel, Lynyrd Skynryd, AC / DC, just to list a few.

In December 2013 they released their first CD called “Howdy Duty” and made its debut with an exclusive show at Piano’s, located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The songs are amazing, with a very particular style, exclusive copyrights lyrics that speak of obstacles. It talks about difficulties encountered at the beginning of their careers. Also, they describe the challenges of being new in New York, numerous teachings, the experience of broken hearts and simply how life may be surprising.

The songs are for sale on iTunes! Here is the music video of one of their most successful songs:

Culture & Music Alessio Romano Band

Alessio Romano

This an Italian artist has several “gifts”. He’s a drummer, musical producer, audio engineer and also photographer. With all these different talents, Alessio Romano decided to open his own studio in Brooklyn in the beginning of 2014, called Studio42. There he can work with music, video and photography.

I’m personally a huge fan of his photography work. With spontaneous images and a perfect light, his pictures definitely surprise viewers with all the captured details and his critical eye!

Culture & Music Tali Ratzon and the Grind

Tali Ratzon

Last, but definitely not least, with an Israeli and American descent, the singer Tali Ratzon! She arrived in New York in 2009 chasing a dream!

A common story to hear in New York…

Tali says she’s “just a girl with a guitar,” but her music certainly does make everyone want to dance! She sings pop music, mixed with funk and bringing influences from Latin rhythms and reggae music, i.e. World Pop.

One of the songs I enjoy the most and sing by heart is “About to Pop”.

Take a look at her the music video:

So, you all have to agree, this guys are really going some awesome work around here, right!?

The Bowery Ballroom: It’s a New York City Classic

Nightlife Bars The Bowery Ballroom Performance

Built just before the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the Bowery Ballroom was formerly a high-end retail store. It remained locked down for several years and it was only in 1997 that it became this unique music venue.

The Bowery is one of our favorite spots to see live performances, intimate shows, indie bands and some of the coolest people in town.

The club serves as the namesake of Joan Baez’s Bowery Songs album, recorded live at a concert at the Bowery Ballroom on November 6, 2004.

It has amazing acoustics, the perfect size, a great story, and a 3 pretty cool bars! Their balcony is also a fantastic option if you want to have a clear view of the stage, but even downstairs you’ll be able to see it well.

The bar downstairs is more intimate and great to start off the night with drinks. When the bands are about to go live, you can walk up to watch them.

If you’re wondering how many people they need to fill up the place, it’s just a little over 550. So, it’s not too big, nor too small!

Like many New York venues, the Bowery Ballroom was also the stage for a famous film. Coyote Ugly was filmed back in the year 2000 and they have a scene at the Bowery! Pay attention next time you watch the movie.

Check out their website for the full list of upcoming shows! It’s certainly a New York City classic.

Plus, here are a few additional tips on the Lower East Side neighborhood or with the same vibe as the Bowery Ballroom. For dinner, you might want to explore Contra. We love going to few hidden speakeasy bars too. For places to stay when you come to New York City, try the super trendy and hip boutique Ludlow Hotel.

Hours: May vary, see their website!

When the Rockwood Music Hall opened in the year of 2005, it was only a small bar that offered a few live performances. With time, it became one of the best New York City venues to go for live music.

Even though they’ve had huge names on stage, on the other hand the owner, Mr. Rockwood, enjoys putting together shows by emerging new young talents too. You will probably see several of these guys in the near future performing on much bigger stages! They are all fantastic artists!

They have a three different stages, so be sure to see them all. Some will charge a small cover fee, and other rooms are free of charge.

It is definitely one of the best places to meet these new upcoming bands, a great crowd, amazing music and the perfect vibe!

As many New York City venues, all shows have a one drink minimum standing and two drink minimum, if you’re seated.

Advance tickets are available online until 4pm on the day of the show. Any remaining tickets can be purchased at the door at showtime.

We also love the Lower East Side neighborhood. Here are a few places we recommend you to visit.

For a true cultural New York experience, head to the Nuyorican Poet Cafe to see some of the best live poetry. For dinner, you might want to explore one of the city’s secret restaurants, Kuma Inn.

The Bluestockings Bookstore is definitely a place worth visiting to feel what this collectively-owned business is all about. Last, if you’re in the mood for shopping, go explore Vaute, the first vegan fashion line that is shaking the fashion world in New York.

Hours:
#1 Stage: opens 6pm Monday – Friday | 3pm on Saturday & Sunday
#2 Stage: opens at 6:30pm daily
