We all know how valuable handcrafted goods are, right? Furthermore, we also know how they exponentially increase the charm of a place.

“Looking back to move forward.” ~ Helio Ascari

Founded in 2011 by the designer Helio Ascari and frame builder Gary Mathis, Ascari Bicycles fuses a timeless sense of fashion with an equally timeless appreciation for the hand-built bicycle.

With the finest material, Ascari builds their own bikes – one by one. In addition, he cares about the minimal details, making sure it’s the perfect bike in aesthetics, fit and ride.

As a matter of fact, here is how Helio explains:

“At Ascari Bicycles we design and build our bikes. All our frames, forks and stems are made by us in the USA. By using time proven techniques and only the best materials we are able to build the finest bicycles on the planet.

As with the details such as our logos and head badges, the dropout faces and serial number badges are brazed in copper and brass.

They are works of art themselves. With a jewelers touch we bring the luxury to compliment the time and passion built into each Ascari.

As the Ascari name is synonymous with Formula One auto racing, Ascari Bicycles hopes to be as synonymous with the enduring legacies of fashion and cycling.”

Are craving to order your first Ascari bike? Well, you can be involved as much as you like in the design process! It is really going to be a one of a kind art work for you!

In 2016, they opened their first brick & mortar store, in collaboration with two friends. New York City based Max Poglia and Milan based Alessandro Squarzi. What a talented trio!

But unfortunately, the store was closed a few years later.

The store was named The Space NYC and was one of the most amazing places we’ve recently seeing opening. It was multi-faceted location with a store, workshop space, creative studio and a highly-curated showroom, in Bushwick.

We love the location in Bushwick, it was fascinating. It was certainly a unique store, great concept, fantastic products and with a very strong and individual identity.

Most certainly, one of the top places we recommend to visit if you’re passing by New York City, or if you live here.

Moreover, if you have any specific request regarding products, workshops, events, or any Corporate inquiries, let us help you out!

And last, after visiting the The Space NYC, you might want to check out the neighborhood. We love Honey’s, side by side with the store, with great wine options. In addition, if you want to explore the neighborhood at night, visit our friends at Lot 45 Bushwick, or see what’s going on at the House of Yes.

Greenpoint is a neighborhood passing through a rapid growth. There are always new stores, coffee shop, the best bars, galleries and other businesses opening. The best part is, they are all fantastic.

The neighborhood reunites some of the most brilliant and artistic minds in New York, and they are now, more than ever, proudly showing the world their talent!

Since we are huge fans, we love writing about them and showing everything they are creating! After all, we are a bit tired of stores that showcase more of the same.

As we said above, Greenpoint has some of the best restaurants and bars in Brooklyn, amazing stores and still, a breathtaking view of the City!

So, let’s talk about reusing and honoring old items to decorate. This is what they are all about!

We recently went to Adaptations NY and couldn’t leave the store! As they explain, they are:

“…an unconventional vintage furniture boutique specializing in mid-century, industrial and farmhouse décor.”

Their products are very charming, super beautiful and will definitely make your Home, a Home! After all, who wants to arrive home and find items that every-other-person-in-New-York also has in their living rooms?

They have everything from furniture to smaller decoration items, so you’ll definitely be able to find what you’re looking for.

More about them:

“We enjoy reusing and honoring old items to create an eclectic laid back environment. We love all styles of design and we believe that an eclectic home is the best way for people to live. No one thing defines us, so why should our homes be just one style?”

They also have another store just a few blocks down, called Porter James NY. There they have objects not only for vintage, but also modern homes. They are located on 116 Franklin Street, Greenpoint in Brooklyn.

Hours: Tuesday – Sunday 12pm – 7pm

There is a great little vintage store in Williamsburg named Antoinette Brooklyn that is definitely worth a visit! If you are a vintage addict always in search for your next great finding, then you’ll love this place.

The owner is called Lexi. The store’s name is in homage to her mother, Antoinette.

Her mom worked during the 1950’s with Lilly Daché, a French fashion designer. Due to the nature of her work, with time she put together an amazing wardrobe, where most of the pieces came from. It was mostly was ‘built’ up between the decades of 1950’s and 1990’s. So, you’ll surely find a huge variety of pieces that fit your own style!

Therefore, every piece has its own little secret story behind it! We love these types of stores! Pieces are unique, with character, with a special history.

Even though they are second hand pieces, they are all impeccably clean, pressed and conserved. So, you may be sure not to worry!

The store sells primarily women’s clothes, but you are able to find some very few pieces for the stylish guys out there! Plus, they also have a range of accessories, gift and a few local designer stuff.

What is NYC Hush Hush Tips?

We invite renowned and extremely influential people from all over the globe to share their NYC secret tips!

Natalie Klein, founder of the luxury multi-brand boutique nkStore in São Paulo, Brazil, launched her brand back in 1997.

She was quite young, but success was inevitable for this amazing woman!

In only a short time, she created, what is today, one of the most important fashion brands in Brazil.

Furthermore, with an amazing professional and personal journey, she was nominated by BOF – Business of Fashion, one of the most “talented retailers shaping the global fashion industry” in the #Bof500 initiative.

But, what is the BoF 500?

“The BoF 500 is the definitive professional index of the people shaping the $2.4 trillion fashion industry, hand-selected by the editors of The Business of Fashion, based on hundreds of nominations received from current BoF 500 members, extensive data analysis and research.”

Pretty amazing nomination, right!?

So, here are the best NYC gems and secrets that she loves:

Devera

Curiosities Insider Interviews Natalie Klein De Vera Crosby

“Devera is an amazing vintage jewelry store that mixes Federico De Vera’s sensibility for antiques with his jewelry design talent!”

The brand was first launched in San Francisco, back in 1991 with a creative approach to showcasing some of the most unique and singular objects and its beauties.

Furthermore, the New York location was then opened in 2003, due to Francisco’s desire to showing the world everything that he’s collected, his passion, his curious state of being about the natural world!

As Federico explains better:

“The gallery shows a finely curated selection including Venetian glass, Japanese lacquer, ivory carvings, 18th century religious figures and antique jewelry. Another unique focus is de Vera jewelry incorporating rare antique elements such as Roman intaglios and Georgian brooches, with precious gemstones including rose-cut diamonds, baroque pearls and Sardinian coral.”

Location: 1 Crosby Street

Sasabune

Curiosities Insider Interviews Natalie Klein Sasabune

“Sasabune is a very traditional Japanese restaurant at the Upper East Side with a “Trust Me” menu – you’ll eat what Chef Kenji Takahashi prepares! It’s always a different experience.”

The restaurant is exactly the type of restaurant that we love to talk about and to show people what New York City is about!

It is very small, and décor is very simple.

But, then again, who need fancy furniture to eat well, right? The focus is definitely on the food, that is to-die-for!

They only serve the Omakase, the chef’s tasting menu, so you’ll have to trust and enjoy!

Plus, for drinks be sure to experiment their different sakes. If you’re not sure which one to order, they are always happy to help you pair it with your dishes!

Location: 401 East 73rd Street

As we’ve written about BBDW before, if you’re the type that enjoys unique items and want to detach and withdraw from the rest of the crowd that purchase in bigger, well-known stores, BDDW is the perfect place for you.

In addition, all items and idealized and designed by the Founder, Tyler Hays, at his Philadelphia Studio.

Tyler expertise are various, from painter and sculpture, to engineer and a pretty talented builder. The result of these expertise are breathtaking pieces of art works for your home!

The Beatrice Inn

Curiosities Insider Interviews Natalie Klein Beatrice Inn

“The Beatrice Inn is, in my opinion, one of the best places to hang out with great food and cocktails. A footnote on the menu reads “Photography is not permitted”, so just enjoy your food!”

The place is a hot spot for celebrities and is a very high-end chophouse in the West Village.

Ans, as they explain:

“Owned by the lauded Chef Angie Mar, and her partner Melissa Merrill Keary, the Beatrice Inn is the edgy, underground version of the traditional New York chophouse.”

So, if you’re a meat eater, this is definitely a place to go!

Location: 285 West 12th Street

Freemans Restaurant

Curiosities Insider Interviews Natalie Klein Freemans

“I love Freemans. Even though it’s becoming more and more well known, the experience of walking into this suspicious alley it always thrilling. The food is great, as is the crowd!”

And, we also love Freemans, and have featured them before! Along the alley you need to walk though to get to the restaurant, you’ll find a few great graffiti works on the brick walls. Perfect for that Instagram-photo-moment!

At the very, very, very end, you’ll find this beyond charming turquoise blue, wooden door surrounded by countless vases with plants and flowers.

Milk & Honey

Curiosities Insider Interviews Natalie Klein Milk and Roses

“One of the top secrets in town with the best dry Martini is called Milk & Honey! The bar is “against celebrity-obsessed nightlife” and has a list of strict house rules to follow.”

We just love secret places and we’ve written about other speakeasy spots through out the website.

Not only the experience of searching for it is super exciting, but once you do find it and walk in, it feels like your entering a parallel universe.

Usually they are hidden behind secret doors, or in basements, and even in the back of other venues, that you can access only with a secret code through a little entrance.
