Pippin Vintage Jewelry is owned by Stephen and Rachel Cooper, whose first date was to an auction! Before opening the shop, Stephen was a vendor at the Chelsea Flea Markets and Rachel, an antique collector and teacher.

In the summer of 2006, the Coopers and their friends and families renovated what was previously a hidden carriage house down an alley. Pippin opened its doors to vintage lovers across New York City ever since!

What sets Pippin apart from most jewelry stores is that while others specialize in certain kinds of jewelry, Pippin has a whole spectrum. Their jewelry selection ranges from five dollar charms to engagement rings that cost thousands of dollars; the jewelry come from as early as the 1800’s and as current as the 1980’s.

As well, while most stores guard their jewelry behind glass encasements, Pippin displays their jewelry in creative ways. They change them up often, allowing customers to interact with the pieces.

We asked the store manager, Tatianni, her advice for vintage jewelry lovers.

“First of all, come here,” she laughs. “But seriously, with vintage jewelry, you just have to find something that speaks to you because vintage has such a range of style through the decades. Buying vintage is great because it has a lesser impact on our planet, and most things were made here.”

“The type of jewelry that is trending right now are unique stones like agates. Druzies are also very in vogue right now.”

Besides the jewelry on display, Pippin also has drawers upon drawers of earrings and cufflinks. Tatianni let me play around with the jewelry, and even helped me pick out a pair of clip-on earrings from the 1970’s.

Fun fact: most vintage earrings from the 1970’s happen to be clip-ons. So, you do not have to worry about whether you or your intended recipients have pierced ears or not!

Behind Pippin Vintage Jewelry, through a whimsically lit alley, you will find its sister store, Pippin Home.

It specializes in furniture and antiques carefully curated and bought from estate auctions in Western Massachusetts and Vermont.

Manager Jack advises those looking to furnish their homes to never be too anxious. He says:

“Space fills up quickly, so you want to be well thought out on your pieces. The advantage of buying vintage over mass produced is that vintage always maintains integrity and value.”

So the next time you’re in Chelsea or New York City, be sure to visit this treasure box of vintage jewelry and home goods!

Let There Be Neon Will Illuminate Your World With Neon Lights

Shop Home and Kids Let There Be Neon Bar Counter

This is a cool tip, if you’re in search for Neon lights!! For over 40 years, Let There Be Neon has created the most unique signages and creations to illuminate our world!

Shop Home and Kids Let There Be Neon Bar Counter

To start with, Let There Be Neon has been in business for over 40 years. Located in the neighborhood of Tribeca, their creations exceeds every client’s expectations and they always come back for more!

Read about them:

“Let There Be Neon has been the preeminent international supplier and creator of Custom Neon for signage and artistic applications.

Although neon is thought of as quintessentially American, it was a Frenchman (Georges Claude) who introduced the first sign, circa 1910.

Before long, a giant white ‘Cinzano’ advertisement was illuminating Paris, ‘The City of Light’. Neon made its American debut in 1923, with a sign above a Packard car showroom in Los Angeles.

Although minimal by current standards, it did what it was supposed to do: stop traffic. Neon took off with the 1933 repeal of prohibition, which created a need for eye-catching signs above bars.

Plus, in the 1930’s and 1940’s, neon became synonymous with Art Deco and the dreamily sinister look of film noir.

So, by the 50’s, it had become inextricably linked with drive-ins, diners, the glamour of Las Vegas and by extension, the American dream itself.

Although cheap fluorescent and plastic signs in the late 50′s temporarily displaced this burst of neon creativity, today the vibrant colored light has once again regained its rightful place on the international landscape.”

Do you own a store, a bar, are throwing a party or simply want to add some neon light to your home? These guys are the ones to go to!

Moreover, after shopping, you might want to relax at Aire Ancient Baths, just a few blocks away.

And, if you’re still in the mood for a late night drink with the cool kids in New York, grab a drink at Paul’s Cocktail Lounge – that is, if you can get in.  What we mean is, the Bouncers there are tough, very tough…

UNFORTUNATELY THIS BRAND NO LONGER EXISTS!

We’ve mentioned this countless times: Brooklyn is the home of some of the most talented and creative artists in New York. The neighborhood is filled with upcoming and established artists sending their message out to the world in the most diverse ways.

It’s impossible to get tired of exploring and uncovering who is the next up and coming artist that will rock New York City!

We have heard about James Barber, Founder of Yes Pls, a while back. When we saw his work, we evidently fell in love immediately.

James has worked for over 10 years with molding and casting. He creates really unique and functional pieces that will give your home a pretty unique type of personality.

You’ll find items from shelves and other items made of wood, to sculptures like skull incense holders. There are mini tripods that are great to place small flowers or our cactus friends. And still, his disruptive and quite interesting concrete teeth ashtrays will surely make your guests curious.

Everything from Yes Pls is certainly extremely creative and rather peculiar! Probably, the reason why we enjoy his pieces so much! The more disruptive and funky looking, the better!

James lives and works in Brooklyn, but you can find his work online.

If you are the type that loved to learn new endeavors, take a look at what the workshops at Brooklyn Brainery are all about! They are a community-driven place where artists volunteer to teach their expertise. Another hand-on course you might enjoy, that is certainly therapeutical too, is at the Flower School NY, located in Chelsea.

We all know how valuable handcrafted goods are, right? Furthermore, we also know how they exponentially increase the charm of a place.

“Looking back to move forward.” ~ Helio Ascari

Founded in 2011 by the designer Helio Ascari and frame builder Gary Mathis, Ascari Bicycles fuses a timeless sense of fashion with an equally timeless appreciation for the hand-built bicycle.

With the finest material, Ascari builds their own bikes – one by one. In addition, he cares about the minimal details, making sure it’s the perfect bike in aesthetics, fit and ride.

As a matter of fact, here is how Helio explains:

“At Ascari Bicycles we design and build our bikes. All our frames, forks and stems are made by us in the USA. By using time proven techniques and only the best materials we are able to build the finest bicycles on the planet.

As with the details such as our logos and head badges, the dropout faces and serial number badges are brazed in copper and brass.

They are works of art themselves. With a jewelers touch we bring the luxury to compliment the time and passion built into each Ascari.

As the Ascari name is synonymous with Formula One auto racing, Ascari Bicycles hopes to be as synonymous with the enduring legacies of fashion and cycling.”

Are craving to order your first Ascari bike? Well, you can be involved as much as you like in the design process! It is really going to be a one of a kind art work for you!

In 2016, they opened their first brick & mortar store, in collaboration with two friends. New York City based Max Poglia and Milan based Alessandro Squarzi. What a talented trio!

But unfortunately, the store was closed a few years later.

The store was named The Space NYC and was one of the most amazing places we’ve recently seeing opening. It was multi-faceted location with a store, workshop space, creative studio and a highly-curated showroom, in Bushwick.

We love the location in Bushwick, it was fascinating. It was certainly a unique store, great concept, fantastic products and with a very strong and individual identity.

Most certainly, one of the top places we recommend to visit if you’re passing by New York City, or if you live here.

Moreover, if you have any specific request regarding products, workshops, events, or any Corporate inquiries, let us help you out!

And last, after visiting the The Space NYC, you might want to check out the neighborhood. We love Honey’s, side by side with the store, with great wine options. In addition, if you want to explore the neighborhood at night, visit our friends at Lot 45 Bushwick, or see what’s going on at the House of Yes.

NYC By The World-Famous Visionary Floral Artist, Jeff Leatham

Curiosities Insider Interviews Jeff Leatham

The world-famous visionary floral artist, Jeff Leatham, tells us his flower secrets in New York City! Your home will never be the same after reading this!

Curiosities Insider Interviews Jeff Leatham

We all know how hard – or painful – it can be to have beautiful flowers in your Home. Living in New York can make this “simple” chore, a challenge. So, we decided to interview the flower expert, Jeff Leatham.

For some people, like our Founder, Fê Paronetto, their palms start sweating just with the thought of What, How, Where to buy Flowers. Don’t get it wrong, our Founder is crazy about flowers….but knows nothing about them! Ha!

Why? Well, lets analyze:

  1. Everyone living in New York is literally always busy running up and down around the city. It’s pretty easy to forget to water your adorable flowers in the morning or when you get home.
  2. New York has a cruel Winter that we only survive due to the massive heaters and has a hot, humid Summer that make us sleep practically embraced with the air conditioner. This makes it so hard to keep flowers alive and glistening.
  3. When you go to a flower shop – in a grocery or market, a boutique flower shop or one of these bigger stores in the Flower District – you never really know what to buy.
  4. Mixing and matching your arrangements? Ha! This can be a complicated task for sure, specially when you only know the names of flower like Roses and Lilacs.

Well, this week Fernanda interviewed the world-famous visionary floral artist, Jeff Leatham.

Curiosities Insider Interviews Jeff Leatham Black and White

Jeff is currently “the Artistic Director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V, in Paris and as well as the Artistic Director at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, where has been creating a sensation with his floral designs and installations since he first began working with flowers there 17 years ago.

Jeff’s work is a combination of his love for flowers and his passion for design. His creations are bold statements, using shape, color and simplicity to produce a dramatic effect. Breathtaking and unforgettable, Jeff’s flowers and design essentials are always integral to the setting, never merely a backdrop.

Known for his floral installations that are often compared to contemporary art, His continuous collaboration with international luxury brands has allowed him to present his work in several international design expositions around the world.

Such Luxury Brand’s as Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bulgari, Swarovski Crystal, Givenchy, Ellie Saab, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Waterford Crystal, Dom Perignon, and Samsung have commissioned Leatham’s design signature style.”

He shared with us a few tips and ideas about which flowers to buy, how to arrange them in your home, what is a cool gift to give someone you love, where he gets his inspirations and much more!

As Cher (Yes! The Singer!) said, and we agree: “Jeff is not a florist, he is a genius.

“I’m known as the “King of Clean” and really believe in less is more. The basics of floral design is to separate blooms (ex: Roses to one side and Hydrangea to the other side). People are usually afraid of being judged, so make it clean, simple and chique, never mixing more than 3 types of flowers and never more that 3 monochromatic colors.”

“To gift someone with flowers is to invest in beautiful vases, so have something pretty to put flowers in. Which vases to buy? I always recommend 3 types: cylinder shaped, bubble bowl or a square shaped. Ideally it’s good to know the personality of the Home, but if you don’t know, keep it simple. My house always has white flowers. When I have a party I still go with the white flowers like Rose, Hydrangea, Casablanca Lily and/or Tuberose.”

Moreover, take a look at his Vase Collection for Waterford where you’ll find these 3 types of vases and a couple more.

Prices vary from $135 – $1,600.

Which flowers are more resistant?

Curiosities Insider Interviews Jeff Leatham Orchids

“When talking about ‘Which flowers are more resistant’, it’s hard to say because there are so many external things that can impact this answer.

Orchid plants can be a good example, because you can travel and you don’t need to worry about watering them. So, a good tip is to drop 4 ice cubes and they can take care on their own.”

“When I travel to New York, my inspiration comes from several different sources like the galleries in Chelsea, MoMA, and the Gagosian Gallery. The High Line has a great variety of different flowers (even though it can get quite crowded), as does the Botanical Garden in Brooklyn which is gorgeous.

Also, the art installations around the City, all the colors spread around NY, the architectural designs are amazing too.

Plus, I also get lots of inspiration browsing through the Elle Decoration magazine. It has beautiful homes and amazing flowers. All these decoration/home magazines definitely have great ideas.”

In addition, Jeff has also written a few books, this the one below, published by the Rizzoli. It’s named “Jeff Leatham: Visionary Floral Art and Design“.

Curiosities Insider Interviews Tamara Peterson by SweatEngine

The Brooklyn-based influencer, Tamara Peterson, shares with our Founder, Fê Paronetto, her best off-the-beaten path tips in her “hood”, in Brooklyn! The area is filled with great restaurants, hip coffee shops and charming stores.

This week, our Founder talked to the beautiful lifestyle, food and travel Instagrammer, Tamara Peterson (@_TamaraPeterson).

Tamara is a native New Yorker, born and raised in NY. For the past 10 years, she’s been living in the charming Brooklyn neighborhood called Clinton Hill and she did confess her deepest love for it.

Her friends and followers are always asking her “why” they haven’t seen these gorgeous townhouses with amazing façades she always posts. Her answer? “You haven’t been to Fort Greene and Clinton Hill in Brooklyn!”

Tamara started her Instagram page, that has now over 187k, around 3.5 years ago as a hobby and it eventually started growing and becoming her second business. Her main work was as a professional organizer for 15 years, but now she works equal time between both businesses, definitely making her days pretty busy!

Her exciting professional life doesn’t stop there! In addition, she also has a background in Fashion working for Glamour Magazine!

The Instagram hobby brought her several new, amazing work possibilities related to travel. In May, she was invited by Viking Cruises to go on a breathtaking 15 day trip that passed through fascinating places like: Norway, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Russia, Finland, Sweden and during her last week, before coming back to NY, she added a quick visit through London and Paris. Can’t complain, right?!

Now, in August, she’ll be exploring the Hudson Valley, in upstate New York. So, keep your eyes opened and check her Instagram feed to find out more about this stunning region in the State of NY.

Tamara shared with us her Top 7 Tips of place in her “hood”, so get your Metro Passes out and come explore them!

Colonia Verde

Curiosities Insider Interviews Tamara Peterson Colonia Verde

“Colonia Verde is a small restaurant in Fort Greene which I love. I’m always there and love sitting outside – they have a lovely garden in the back that you’d never expect to find. It’s the type of place that transforms you when you leave the city and go into Brooklyn.”

As they say in Spanish “La comida compartida sabe major!”…which means “Shared food tastes much better!” The restaurant has a clear Latin American inspiration and offers a menu with the most delicious locally sourced fresh ingredients. They have great brunches, but are opened mostly for dinner.

Oh! And they offer Full Catering Services and Event Services too, so do take a look online and contact them for further information.

For more pictures and information, see our post on Colonia Verde.

“Maison-May is a new place, and it’s adorable. They have a restaurant and a more casual café. It’s incredible. They have home items, pastry, coffee, amazing wooden tables I love. Definitely a hidden gem.”

Maison-May is explained as: “physically, two distinct places: Maison-May Dekalb & Maison-May Vanderbilt. They were founded and are led by Catherine May. They’re retelling the story of what the restaurant business is all about. Maison-May is an ethos, a way of operating rooted in replenishing, feeding & empowering. More than a business model, Maison-May is a way of living.”

So, Maison-May Vanderbilt has breakfast and lunch, a café, a patisserie, plus they offer private dinners, a drop-off menu and sell some beautiful home objects.

Maison-May Dekalb offers dinners, brunches on the weekends, they rent the space for private events and is a beautiful spot for a small, intimate ‘brownstone wedding’.

Vanderbilt: 8am – 5pm, daily
Dekalb: Dinners, daily | Saturday & Sunday: Brunch from 10am – 3pm

“This is one of my favorite places too. Stonefruit Espresso + Kitchen is a coffee shop, with pastries, little foods, the best chia seed pudding ever and, have you heard of “the original dough”? Well, you’ll find it here! They recently opened, next door to the coffee shop, a home store where they sell plants. It’s incredible and beautiful. I buy my plants and flowers there.”

Founded by Laura Sorensen, Stonefruit Espresso + Kitchen works with a great variety of fresh products by New York City’s best farmers markets. Hence, making it one of the “conscious cafe” in the neighborhood.

Plus, they explain that “we brew Counter Culture coffee and Bellocq tea— exceptional and sustainable beverages.”

Greenpoint is a neighborhood passing through a rapid growth. There are always new stores, coffee shop, the best bars, galleries and other businesses opening. The best part is, they are all fantastic.

The neighborhood reunites some of the most brilliant and artistic minds in New York, and they are now, more than ever, proudly showing the world their talent!

Since we are huge fans, we love writing about them and showing everything they are creating! After all, we are a bit tired of stores that showcase more of the same.

As we said above, Greenpoint has some of the best restaurants and bars in Brooklyn, amazing stores and still, a breathtaking view of the City!

So, let’s talk about reusing and honoring old items to decorate. This is what they are all about!

We recently went to Adaptations NY and couldn’t leave the store! As they explain, they are:

“…an unconventional vintage furniture boutique specializing in mid-century, industrial and farmhouse décor.”

Their products are very charming, super beautiful and will definitely make your Home, a Home! After all, who wants to arrive home and find items that every-other-person-in-New-York also has in their living rooms?

They have everything from furniture to smaller decoration items, so you’ll definitely be able to find what you’re looking for.

More about them:

“We enjoy reusing and honoring old items to create an eclectic laid back environment. We love all styles of design and we believe that an eclectic home is the best way for people to live. No one thing defines us, so why should our homes be just one style?”

They also have another store just a few blocks down, called Porter James NY. There they have objects not only for vintage, but also modern homes. They are located on 116 Franklin Street, Greenpoint in Brooklyn.

Hours: Tuesday – Sunday 12pm – 7pm

Location: 109 Franklin Street, Greenpoint

“Designed Responsibly in Brooklyn, Made Sustainably in Indonesia.”

When our Founder, Fê Paronetto, had just moved to NYC and was in the craziness of furnishing her new home, she stumbled upon this store! It was love at first sight, lol.

The store was founded by the so called serial entrepreneur, Robert Fireman (1936 – 2015), in the 1980’s.

Bob fell in love with the beautiful handcrafted work done by the people in Indonesia. Immediately, he felt an urge to engage with their community.

As a result, they carry everything from bar & counter stools, benches, dining chairs, to tables, desks, nightstands, bookcases, dressers, beds, accessories and a huge list of other items!

His team explains:

“Bob fell in love with not only the people, but the beautiful and unique hardwoods of Indonesia.

His ingenuity, entrepreneurship, and hardworking personality led to his largest and most recent passion of what is known today as ‘From The Source’.

Today, From the Source employs approximately 80 individuals in the Central Java. We provide job training, medical care, meals, and other benefits to ensure their welfare and the well-being of their families.”

And yet, their Mission to creating a more sustainable environment:

“Our mission is to bring our customers closer to the environment through uniquely designed furniture that open your space to the world.

The journey begins at the source of our raw materials where we exchange ideas with local communities. We incorporate craft techniques into production methods.

Working together, we find responsible ways to provide high-quality furnishings to the US market.”

Fantastic, right?

So, go explore the store and let us know what you thought about it!
