Needless to say, NYC in the Summer can be a bittersweet affair. The city sizzles, tourists swarm (not much to do about this…), and the thought of escaping to a tranquil beach sounds like a dream.

But what if you can’t leave NYC? Whether it’s work, budget, or other commitments tethering you to the Big Apple, there’s good news: you can still feel like you’re on vacation without actually leaving town.

Yeah, that sounds a little too unrealistic, though, right? Well, it’s NYC; there are plenty of fun things to do! So, with that all said, here’s your guide to escaping NYC without ever setting foot outside its vibrant borders.

Stay in a Hotel with a Pool

Even staying somewhere outside of your house can be absolutely wonderful. So, why not pick a swanky hotel with a pool? Yes, by all means, that sounds way too expensive, right?

Well, there are plenty of hotels in Brooklyn NY with pool. If it’s in Brooklyn, you know it’s going to be fairly affordable. So, imagine lounging by the water with a cocktail in hand, without a care in the world.

Plus, you’ll get to sleep in a comfortable bed, and you can order room service if you want to stay in a robe all day; seriously, what could be better?

If going to a hotel is too unaffordable, then why not go this route? This is free, but it can be cheap, too. Basically, all you have to do is just grab a blanket, a basket full of your favorite treats (or go to a deli) and find a shady spot.

You have options like Sheep Meadow, Great Lawn, or the quieter North Woods are all perfect picnic spots. Sure, you’re still going to feel like you’re in NYC because the park is always busy, but just let yourself pretend that you’ve escaped.

Explore the Unknown Corners of NYC

When was the last time you played tourist in your own city? Even if you have lived there your entire life, chances are high you have been to every neighborhood; chances are high, you haven’t been to every attraction either.

Yes, every resident is guilty of missing out on these local treasures—make this summer the time you uncover them.

Boat Ride Adventures

Nothing says summer like a day on the water. So, why not rent a kayak and paddle around the Hudson River or hop on a touristy boat tour?

You could even look into one of those sunset sails. Depending on where you’re at, you can potentially feel like you’ve escaped the city.

For the most adventurous ones, try Jet Ski in the Hudson River. We’ve done it, survived it (lol!), and LOVED it – the image at the top of the post proves it. Plus, you’ll experience the most breathtaking view of the city’s skyline from the middle of the river, while our beautiful Statue of Liberty is right behind you!

Rooftop Bars and Open-Air Cinemas

A lot of tourists love going to rooftop bars, so why not try this? Besides, a lot of New Yorkers love this, too (they just go to the non-touristy ones).

If you’re in the mood for a movie, catch an open-air screening. Rooftop Cinema Club and Bryant Park’s Summer Film Festival are perfect for those balmy summer evenings.
