Too Touristy: Becoming a Main Bee of The Big Apple

Hopeful future New Yorker! Whether you’re here for a few days or a few weeks in the Big Apple, you’ve got a choice: dive into the touristy chaos or blend in seamlessly with the locals. If you want to walk the streets and feel like you truly belong, here’s your guide to visiting NYC and living that local dream. Let’s get you in a New York state of mind.

West Village - New York City - Big Apple

Embrace the Neighborhood Vibe

Sure, Times Square has that glitzy “I’ve arrived” appeal, but the real charm of our Big Apple lies in its neighborhoods. Swing by the West Village or East Village. Seriously, grab yourself a latte from a cozy café, wander the sidewalks, and people-watch in Washington Square Park.

Or even better, finally go explore Brooklyn that has some of the most fantastic restaurants, bar, stores and experiences! Some of our favorite neighborhoods to explore is Fort Greene (never heard about ir, right?!), Carroll Gardens and the “distant lands” of artsy Bushwick!

Each neighborhood has its own unique pulse, and discovering them at a relaxed pace can make you feel like you’ve lived here forever. Ain’t nothing like knowing which block’s got the best bagels or where the local jazz band plays on Tuesday nights.

Become a Subway Savant

The subway is the lifeblood of New Yorkers. Instead of hailing a cabbie or Uber, get yourself a OMNY card (the new version of the nostalgic NYC Metro Card), download a subway map, and start hopping on trains. Peak hours can be a bit wild, but it’s all part of the experience.

Once you master standing without holding on, congratulations—you’re basically a local! And don’t forget; nothing says “seasoned New Yorker” like pretending to be asleep while a mariachi band serenades you on the sixth train.

Dine Like a Local

NYC is a foodie paradise, so think like a New Yorker and hunt down the gems. You can start your day with a bagel and lox from Russ & Daughters (a classic!) with some schmear, slurp some delicious ramen from Ippudo (the most famous ramen in the country), or enjoy a classic slice at Joe’s Pizza (famous and loved by locals, even though it became known worldwide for appearing in movies like Spiderman).

But, for the true local experience, try places like Williamsburg’s Beco Bar (a neighborhood favorite), Sunday in Brooklyn (a great start in exploring the area), Walter’s in Fort Green (tip: ask to go into their speakeasy Karasu – a Japanese izakaya) and and 2 Vegan restaurants we completely adore: Seasoned Vegan in Harlem (amazing story and an opportunity to explore Harlem) and the refined Avant Garden in the West Village. Our list is endless, but these are good to start!

Food trucks are another must-try; they’re like the street food soul of the city. Dip your toe into an array of cultures right from the curb—every corner’s got a story and a snack to die for.

Attend Local Events

Stop frontin’ and swap overpriced attractions for local happenings. The city’s parks, community theaters, and even college campuses host amazing events. Ever been to Shakespeare in the Park (a bit touristy still, but a great experience) or a jazz night at Smalls? These experiences are the heartbeat of New York’s vibrant culture and will make you feel like you’re part of the scene.

We also love Sofar Sounds’ NYC secret private shows with outstanding local talents that happen around the city, nightclubs like House of Yes (prepare yourself for “awe”) and the super cool and hype Nowadays both in Brooklyn! Music festivals are also a must go, so be sure to stay tuned for the upcoming ones!

Shop Small and Indie

Skip the massive department stores and opt for local boutiques and flea markets. Chelsea Market, Artists & Fleas, and Brooklyn Flea are brimming with unique finds. Shopping here supports local talent and scores you some cool, one-of-a-kind items to take back home. You’ll be cutting a rug with the hip and happening crowd, dressing up straight from the urban dictionary of style.

Finding Your Beehive

Well, if you really want to stay like a New Yorker, you should probably book yourself into a 700-square-foot apartment with three roommates and one window. But because you want the dream New York, it’s best to consider your stay at a boutique hotel in neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Soho, or the Upper West Side.

Unfortunately Airbnb in NYC have now new limitations and regulations, so be sure to check for ones that have city approval. It’s important that you understand now that the city required hosts to register and be present in the same house during the visitor’s full stay – so that might not be exactly what you’re looking for.

These spots offer comfy stays and often give you incredible city views, helping you feel like you’re a true New Yorker rather than just a visitor. Many city view hotels will help you feel the heartbeat of New York; something with a view just might give you more insight into the New Yorkers’ way.

By following these tips, you won’t just visit New York City; you’ll experience it. You’ll tap into its soul, its rhythm, and its vibrant energy. New York isn’t just a place to see; it’s a place to live, breathe, and truly feel alive. So go ahead, blend in, and become one with this incredible city! Ain’t nothing finer than strutting the streets like you’re struttin’ down your very own block. Have fun in the Big Apple!
