We all know how valuable handcrafted goods are, right? Furthermore, we also know how they exponentially increase the charm of a place.

“Looking back to move forward.” ~ Helio Ascari

Founded in 2011 by the designer Helio Ascari and frame builder Gary Mathis, Ascari Bicycles fuses a timeless sense of fashion with an equally timeless appreciation for the hand-built bicycle.

With the finest material, Ascari builds their own bikes – one by one. In addition, he cares about the minimal details, making sure it’s the perfect bike in aesthetics, fit and ride.

As a matter of fact, here is how Helio explains:

“At Ascari Bicycles we design and build our bikes. All our frames, forks and stems are made by us in the USA. By using time proven techniques and only the best materials we are able to build the finest bicycles on the planet.

As with the details such as our logos and head badges, the dropout faces and serial number badges are brazed in copper and brass.

They are works of art themselves. With a jewelers touch we bring the luxury to compliment the time and passion built into each Ascari.

As the Ascari name is synonymous with Formula One auto racing, Ascari Bicycles hopes to be as synonymous with the enduring legacies of fashion and cycling.”

Are craving to order your first Ascari bike? Well, you can be involved as much as you like in the design process! It is really going to be a one of a kind art work for you!

In 2016, they opened their first brick & mortar store, in collaboration with two friends. New York City based Max Poglia and Milan based Alessandro Squarzi. What a talented trio!

But unfortunately, the store was closed a few years later.

The store was named The Space NYC and was one of the most amazing places we’ve recently seeing opening. It was multi-faceted location with a store, workshop space, creative studio and a highly-curated showroom, in Bushwick.

We love the location in Bushwick, it was fascinating. It was certainly a unique store, great concept, fantastic products and with a very strong and individual identity.

Most certainly, one of the top places we recommend to visit if you’re passing by New York City, or if you live here.

Moreover, if you have any specific request regarding products, workshops, events, or any Corporate inquiries, let us help you out!

And last, after visiting the The Space NYC, you might want to check out the neighborhood. We love Honey’s, side by side with the store, with great wine options. In addition, if you want to explore the neighborhood at night, visit our friends at Lot 45 Bushwick, or see what’s going on at the House of Yes.

The Reality Of A Social Galaxy Created By Cactus

Culture Music Social Galaxy Black Egg Samsung BTSNYC

As soon as our friend Lucas Werthein told us about the project called Social Galaxy he had launched in partnership with Samsung, our Founder, Fê Paronetto went to check it out!

Lucas is one of the brains behind the recently launched installation inside 837 Samsung, in the Meatpacking District. It is a breathtaking installation experience by Cactus, called “Social Galaxy“!

The infinite mirrored tunnel gathers all the posts from public Instagram accounts. You connect it to your own feed, but you need to set it public, if it’s not. After connecting them, it projects it onto the countless screens. The system selects the texts and photos and, a robotic voice in the back, reads it all out loud.

The collage is amazing and unexplainable in words, projecting your entire social life in the tunnel. It takes you back to special moments and creates a nostalgic and emotional sensation!

Fernanda had a VIP run-through. The entire tunnel projected only our “Behind the Scenes NYC” feed!

“I was sitting at the corner of the tunnel, looking in awe and had goosebumps spread throughout my whole body.

It’s the feeling that your entire life, passions and memory have been extracted. Then, placed right in front of your eyes through an infinite image series.”

Usually the tunnel divides into 3 parts so guests have only 1/3 of the screens. But, having it all for us, was an absolute experience!

When you leave the installation, Cactus created a huge wall in the store – The Mosaic. Built with over 90 TV screens it projects photos taken on sight by a photographer.

“As guests emerge from the tunnel, they approach the Social Galaxy photo mosaic. Here, visitors snap photos of themselves at a photo booth using a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge phone. The watch as their portrait is displayed on a huge, three-story LED Screen.

Each portrait is made from thousands of small images taken from the collective pool of past visitors’ Instagram feeds. It’s a reflection of self as a culmination of experiences.”

The algorithm selects pictures with different color pallets to replicated the picture taken. Then it uses all the images the computer stored in the past 24hours, used in the tunnel!

Crazy, right?

Thank you to our dearest friend Lucas, Co-Founder of Cactus, for this journey into our Behind The Scenes NYC story! It was definitely a priceless experience to see our hard work exposed through an infinite image tunnel.

Go there to see what your social world looks like. You will have a great time!

Location: 837 Washington Street

Vanessa Gabb’s dazzling poetry debut in New York City

Culture Music Vanessa Gabb Poetry Book Photo Credit AnimalFarmNYC

We met Vanessa Gabb this past weekend at a friend’s brunch. We loved her energy and her work, so we decided to share about her poetry debut in New York City launching in a few weeks!

Culture Music Vanessa Gabb Poetry Book Photo Credit AnimalFarmNYC

“I need a safe house everywhere I go / The invasions are every day,” writes Vanessa Jimenez Gabb in her dazzling debut collection of poetry, Images for Radical Politics.

Gabb’s book begins with an economic update. It moves through scenes of labor, liberty, danger, and the dull-gorgeous ache of a capitalist existence; an existence spent negotiating one’s time and worth, one’s civic role, one’s money.

“Come closer / Let me see your face / Tell me your name / What has happened to you / Today what was taken,” we read with an intimacy that disarms.

Images for Radical Politics is an astonishing first collection of documented work and worry, of radiating radical concern.

Vanessa Jimenez Gabb is the author of the chapbooks Midnight Blue (Porkbelly Press, 2015) and Weekend Poems (Dancing Girl Press, 2014).

She received her MFA in Poetry from CUNY Brooklyn College and is from and lives in Brooklyn.”

The official book launch is November 1st. It will be amazing, plus you’ll have the opportunity of talking to her!

The launch party will be at Torn Page Salon in Chelsea, November 13th from 3-5pm. What to expect? Readings and wine!

Vanessa Gabb is born, raised and still lived in Brooklyn. Currently teaches English and Creative Writing at Newark Academy in Livingston, New Jersey.

A few places she loves in her hood are: Sisters Brooklyn and Olea a Mediterranean restaurant that gathers a very cool Brooklyn crowd!

Furthermore, if you are interested in talking directly to Vanessa, let us know and we can do an intro for you! Her work is literally amazing!

The Strangers Project by Brandon Doman, so “What’s Your Story?”

Curiosities City Secrets Strangers Project Brandon Doman Night Lights

A few weeks ago we were at a Tech Startup event and ‘bumped’ into this amazing booth, where Brandon Doman was showcasing his project, called “The Strangers Project”.

The name instantly caught my attention and I stopped to learn more! The Strangers Project is a compilation of 20,000+ handwritten, anonymous and spontaneous journal entries from strangers. They share some of the most important moment in their lives.

The book is called “What’s Your Story?: True Experiences from Complete Strangers” and it’s certainly a unique piece of art to have at your home. Or even, give it as a gift to someone you love!

So, after falling in love with his project, we decided to interview Brandon. We wanted to disclose his amazing story and project.

So, here it goes:

How did The Strangers Project start?

“Back in 2009 I was sitting outside of a coffee shop. Hundreds of people were walking by and I found myself curious about their lives. An idea crossed my mind! “What would it take to get these anonymous strangers to share something about their life with me? What might we have in common besides being strangers?”

I took a marker from my bag and the notebook wrote: “Hi There! Please stop and share your story!”

I felt a little nervous propping it up on the table at first. I had no idea how people would react. Within the first few minutes, two women stopped at my table and pointed at the sign.”

They asked me, “What are you doing?”

I told them that I wasn’t really sure yet, and then asked if they would be willing to write something about their lives in the notebook. I told them it could be anything as long as it was true… and they began to write.

This is how I started collecting stories from strangers. These stories are collected face to face in public spaces around the country with a stack of blank paper, clipboards, and a lot of pens.

During this time I’ve met tens of thousands of strangers, and so far, over 20,000 of them have handwritten stories while sitting across from me during this exploration of spontaneous intimacy.”

What are some of the most amazing statements you’ve collected?

“This is always a hard question to answer because there are so many incredibly diverse and interesting stories that people have shared.

An important part of building the architecture of this project was creating something where people could share whatever they wanted without prompts—it’s simply a place to share, in your own words, something about your life.

They come in from all ages, all walks of life, and each end of the emotional spectrum. Some are short and silly, some are heavy and challenging, some are adventurous or exploratory.  Because of that, we end up with these stories that resonate with people for very different reasons.

Some people enjoy finding stories that share a common thread to their own experiences, others like finding ones that share views and experiences that are very different from their own. This diversity allows us to both find connection and exploration of the infinite ways our lives unfold.

I know that doesn’t exactly answer your question, but my point is: it’s best to just explore.”

Has anything unique or surprising happened after you started this project, that you never really expected?

“I could talk about this for days. Nothing in the project is mailed in or sent in online, so that means I’ve had a chance to meet all 20,000+ people that have shared stories.

When I’m out collecting I always have hundreds of stories for people to read as well, so including the people that stop by to read, ask questions, and experience the project in other ways, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many tens of thousands of people I would have never met otherwise.

This in-person approach lends itself to all kinds of great experiences. Many people come back to read and share new stories over the years—some of them becoming good friends.

I’ve really enjoyed meeting fans from around the world who were following along online but then had a chance to find the project in the real world.

The Strangers Project has even been a part of three marriage proposals that happened through stories— one even spontaneously right on the spot.

I love being able to share the stories online, but my favorite part of the project is being able to create physical spaces for us to connect with our stories.”

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

“Each year I try to grow the project in different ways. This fall I have some big news:

The first Strangers Project national tour and documentary. There are so many experiences I have that I can’t easily share online. And, with this new endeavor, we’re going to change that.

These stories offer a brief glimpse into the intimacies of everyday lives, bridging meaningful connections between strangers. By creating a place for stories, we create space to understand each other and ourselves.

My goal is to take these stories to new communities, and to have a film crew join along. We’re crowdfunding right now to make this happen, so I encourage you to check out our video and get involved!”

Thank you, Brandon, for taking your time to answer our questions! It was amazing to learn a bit more about this fantastic journey!

If you want to see more information, take a look here.

In addition, Brandon currently has a pop-up installation up at Fountain House Gallery with hundreds of stories on the walls. He’ll be there daily until August 25th but, most importantly, they’re having a reception and fundraiser on Tuesday,  August 23rd from 6pm – 9pm. You’ll be able to see numerous Stories alongside complimentary beverages, and more!

Lastly, if you’re a fan of buying photography books, you will probably love “The Borscht Belt: Abandoned Sites In The Catskills Region“.

Enjoy!

Dana Barry: Coffee Shops In Brooklyn Can Be An Adventure

Curiosities City Secrets Dana Barry Illustration Brooklyn

The beauty of working out of coffee shops in Brooklyn is the possibility of meeting random strangers. It is most definitely an experience everyone should have one day! I recently met Dana Barry, a very talented illustrator!

Curiosities City Secrets Dana Barry Illustration Brooklyn

Today, I was working from one of the coffee shops in Williamsburg that I love spending the day! After grabbing a smoothie and approaching back to my place, a breathtaking sketchbook lying on top of my “neighbor’s” table caught my attention.

I couldn’t help myself and started talking to her! Well, you know me! I’m great at starting random conversations with stranger, and usually leave with a new friend.

Her name is Dana Barry. She was born in New York,  but lived in Cali for a while where she studied at an Art College. After some time there, she decided to come back to the East Coast. She explained that New York was more of her style, and is now living in Brooklyn.

Dana’s work is amazing and very powerful. She sketches images of people that pass through the New York subways! Sometimes, she has just a few minutes before the person jumps off at another station. So, she draws the main lines and compliments is later with her memory and creativity!

Her idea is to eventually put together this beautiful book with her sketches, showing the diversity of this crazy City. Dana explains:

“It’s a way to break all the preconceptions we have when we judge someone before even talking to them. Sometimes, a guy that might look like a hardcore drug dealer, is actually thinking good thoughts, or what he’ll be cooking his kids for dinner tonight. While a gorgeous woman wearing an expensive fur coat can be pondering on the possibility of suicide…”

We never know what goes through people’s heads, but humans are judgmental beings at a first glance, for sure.

Her work is really something! Her energy is definitely great and she’s one of these beautiful souls you just happen to stumble upon.

I’m always glad when I start these random conversation throughout my week, in the most diverse spots.

What a pleasure it was to meet her!

We all know how creepy the subways passages in New York City can be. Garbage, dirt, weird smells that you have no intention of knowing what it is. Plus, the little friendly rats are always there to entertain while we wait for the next train.

Well, the visitors and locals that are constantly passing by the tunnel that connects Broadway to 191st Street subway station are happier than ever before! This area, at the very Northern tip of Manhattan, is called Fort George.

That area has actually quite a few interesting places to visit. Plus, a few historical sights and landscapes that are gorgeous! If you are interested in heading that way, but prefer heading up with an expert tour guide, let our experts arrange this for you!

The city’s Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) selected 5 artists to help change the atmosphere there. NoMAA is a non-profit arts service organization that cultivates, supports and promotes the works of artists and arts organizations in Northern Manhattan.

Artists from all over across the globe applied for this work, but the chosen ones were mostly locals.

The final chosen names were:

  • Fernando Carlo Jr. (a.k.a. Cope 2)
  • Queens-based artist Nick Kuszyk’s
  • Andrea von Bujdoss
  • Jessie Unterhalter and Katey Truhn from Maryland
  • and the Chilean artist Nelson Rivas

Don’t hesitate to take some time and visit the scene. And, like we said above, if you want to visit the area, but have no idea how to get there or even, where to go, let our experts organize a cool experience for you!

It’s definitely worth it!

Gisela Gueiros: NY Tips Through The Eyes Of An Art Expert

Curiosities Insider Interviews Gisela Gueiros by Victoria Will for Loeffler Randall

We interviewed the art expert, Gisela Gueiros. This Brooklyn-based art connoisseur shared with us the most fantastic list of NY Tips. Come explore the city through her eyes!

Curiosities Insider Interviews Gisela Gueiros by Victoria Will for Loeffler Randall

Our Founder, Fernanda Paronetto interviewed Gisela Gueiros: a guide to the Arts, Vogue Brazil’s Correspondent, Blogger about what is happening in NYC and a Master in Art History.

Plus, she’s the mom of beautiful twin boys…transplanted from São Paulo to Brooklyn.

So, see below her Top 6 NYC Tips + 1 artsy spot in Connecticut:

“I recently celebrated a friend’s birthday at the Blue Hill Farm, in the Hudson Valley. Leaving Grand Central Station it’s about an hour away. The tasting menu is made up of the freshest seasonal ingredients – many of them picked directly from the farm where the restaurant is located. Dan Barber is the chef-owner. Divine!”

Located in Pocantico Hills, in the Hudson Valley, Blue Hill Farm was previously owned by two brothers, until Ann Marlowe Straus was able to buy it from them.

But, this actually took years to happen, since they didn’t want to sell it.

Ann share a bit more about the story:

“Back then it was a dairy run by two brothers. What a mess! They had cows pasturing in the front yard, for god’s sake… And the barn and house were run-down and so dirty I couldn’t believe it. And, you know what? I loved it. I loved the open pastures, I loved the backdrop of blue hills, I loved that I felt like a queen every time I came up here.”

And, a little bit of history about the park:

“In 1866, Stranahan and the  park commissioners hired Olmsted, Vaux & Company to transform 585 acres of remnant forest and rocky farmland into a landscape whose beauty, though manufactured, would nurture the mind, the body and even the fabric of society.

At the heart of their design were the 90-acre Long Meadow, the woodland Ravine, meandering paths with scenic lookouts, and a watercourse that featured waterfalls, springs and the 60-acre Lake.

Plus, the Park officially opened in 1867, even though construction continued for another seven years, and it was an unparalleled success.

An 1868 report to the Brooklyn Park Commissioners noted that in July alone there had been more than 100,000 visitors to the incomplete park.”

Thom Browne Debates The Concept Of Individuality At Cooper Hewitt Museum

Culture Music Thom Browne Selects Cooper Hewitt

The men’s wear designer, Thom Browne, was the guest curator of #ThomBrowneSelects hosted inside Cooper Hewitt Museum. His work was certainly intriguing and discussed the concept of individuality.

Culture Music Thom Browne Selects Cooper Hewitt

“If you’re going into design, you should be in it only because you want to design things that are provocative and new. Be true to yourself and have the confidence to design according to what you think and not what other people are trying to tell you.” – Thom Browne

In a world where we see everyone copying everyone else and that individuality and being unique is so rare, Thom Browne challenges this topic in a recent project.

Hosted inside the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, his installation gathered over 50 contemporary mirrors and frames that are part of they museum’s historic collection.

He explored the “ideas of reflection and individuality”. On the other hand of being the same, he shows the beauty and simplicity of working with a beautiful design.

Ok? You didn’t get it? He explains:

“Uniformity in the fashion world is almost a four-letter word, especially for women, who don’t want to wear the same thing every day. In actuality, it would be so refreshing and simplify things. If it’s beautifully made and fits really well, there’s nothing boring about that. It’s just beautiful.”

In an ongoing series, Thom Browne is the 13th exhibition where over 210,000 objects from Cooper Hewitt’s collection is used and interpreted by different outstanding designers, architects and artists.

The exhibition on view through October 23, 2016 at the Cooper Hewitt – The Smithsonian Design Museum. It’s located in landmark Carnegie Mansion.

Simply gorgeous! But, do keep posted on their upcoming exhibitions. They are always fantastic!

You can walk down 5th Avenue at stop at the both, super famous Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Or, just enjoy all the museums and galleries down the Museum Mile. It starts at the famous The MET Museum and goes all the way up to 105th Street.

Location: 2 East 91st Street (with 5th Avenue)
